Admin server/ config DB
Finally moving to 5.2 and I 'm setting up MM and 2 consumers. I'm having it all configurations stored into 1 config instance but I'll have it failover to the other master if the one confi instance is down w/. and Alteon. I used to in 5.1 have config instance on each server. My question is ... Sun recommends this but what do others do. Do you have your config DB included in your default instance on each server or do you try to just have one config db where they all sit?
My other question is... Do you have an Admin server running on all servers or do you just have it on your masters since thats where your config sits.
Years ago while running the older Netscape/iPlanet 4.0 series Directory server, I has configured all of my production Directory servers to use a single instance of the admin server (and hence, the same config db) located on the sole master. This was fine until we had a hardware failure and for lengthy reasons could not recover the admin server. Thus, I had to rebuild the entire production env from scratch. This was not fun and since then, I've made sure that every single directory server in our env uses it's only local config db and admin server.
Like others, I'm currently building a new Directory implementation using the Sun JES 5.2 Director Server and am wondering if I should go back to a single config db/admin server instance for my entire production directory cluster. I'm very reluctant to do this as our need for truly High-Availability Directory Cluster is a MUST. I cannot have the loss or corruption of a admin server effect my entire production env.
Does anybody else with strong HA Directory requirements have any thoughts on this issue?
Certainly, I like idea of having a single Admin server instance but then I'm very reluctant to put all my "eggs in one basket", so to speak.
Cheers,
Rob Chevalier

CA-signed certificate for admin server
hi,
how can i make the admin-server use a CA signed certificate instead of self-signed? i only see an option to renew the self-signed certificates.okay, this is the method i used:
webserver$ cd /var/opt/SUNWwbsvr7/admin-server/config
# Save the CA certificate in cacert.crt, and import it into the database:
webserver$ certutil -d . -A -n Example-Inc-CA -t CTu -a -i cacert.crt
# Generate a new CSR on stdout:
webserver$ certutil -R -d . -s 'CN=ws.example.org,O=Example, Inc.' -a -g 2048 -k rsa
# Sign the CSR and save the certificate to 'newcert.crt', then import it:
webserver$ certutil -d . -A -n cert-ws.example.org -t u -a -i newcert.cert
webserver$ vi server.xml
# Look for <server-cert-nickname>, and change it from 'Admin-Server-Cert' (the default)
# to 'cert-ws.example.org'.
webserver$ ../bin/stopserv
webserver$ ../bin/startservreplace 'ws.example.org' with the hostname the admin server runs on.
this seemed to work for me; after the restart, the admin server was using the new certificate, and the browser accepted it. -
Core Dump admin-server instance in Solaris 10 U5 x86
I have successful upgrade my Solaris 10 x86 u4 to u5. But, the Sun Java System Web Server admin-server unable to start, it produces core files within <SJSWS installation>/admin-server/config.
I tried re-install SJSWS, but appear the same problem.
All web server instance are running properly. The problem only appear in admin-server instance only.
Thanks,
Regards,
AdhariCan you send more details?
#cd <SJSWS installation>/admin-server/

Can you try changing JDKs and seeing if the problem goes away?
Can you try increasing default page size?
Have you tried applying required patches ?

Starting Admin Server with SSL as Windows service
Using Admin Server 5.2, SP3:
How (or can) I start the admin server as windows service after enabling SSL? When I try to start it as a service, I get prompted with a dialog box for the cert/key database password, but I want this start seemlessly. I tried creating a text file containing the password (as advised for normal directory server) - of the form: admin-serv-<inst>-pin.txt in the /alias subdirectory, containing the line "internal (software) Token:<password>", but this did not work - I still get the dialog box prompt.
Do I need to put this password file somewhere else? Do I need tweak something to make this work? Or is it impossible to start the admin server seemlessly as a service after enabling SSL?
Thx.
RHi Gary-
Thanks for responding. I tried making the file read-only in Windows, but it yielded the same result. I also tried different combinations of removing spaces and new-line inside the file, all to no avail.
I think this is a different beast than the slapd server - the admin server is actually an 'ns-httpd' process; Since I saw that this was the case, I also tried updating the <server-root>\admin-serv\config\magnus.conf by adding an SSLPassPhraseDialog directive to a command that echo'ed back the password, but I just got a warning that this directive was ignored.
Any other thoughts? Does anyone else even try securing the admin server? -
Running admin server user as non-root
Hi All,
I have a requirement to run admin server user as non-root. Is this possible and how to go about it.
gioviWeb Server traditionally runs with a process parentage something like:
Admin Server -> WatchDog -> Primordial Process -> Worker Process
The Worker Process runs with the UID specified in the configuration (nobody, webservd, etc). This is the process that is actually doing the work of being a web server.
The Primordial Process typically runs with the UID specified in teh configuration. The primordial process never handles requests. Its role is to quickly create replacement worker processes if the worker process unexpectedly terminates.
The WatchDog process typically runs with privileged (read "root") access in order to be able to bind to the privileged ports of the OS (any port below 1024). Without privileged access no bind can occur. Once the Watchdog performs the bind it creates the Primordial process, delegates ownership of the port, etc. From then on its role is to watch for unexpected termination of the Primordial process and, if needed, create a new one.
The Admin server is an optional part of the configuration. When used, it also needs to have the necessary rights to bind to the privileged ports.
So then - the only way to allow the Admin Server or the Watchdog run non-privileged and still be able to perform their jobs is to loosen the restrictions on the privileged ports themselves. On Solaris 10 you could do this with:
# usermod -K defaultpriv=basic,net_privaddr webservd
Then become webservd and start the process.
Note that the Admin Server's UID is set in admin-serv/config/server.xml (there may be a screen for this in the GUI). Look for the <user>root</user> element. -
Problems connecting to the Admin Server
My browser can't connect to the Admin Server. Why not?
<P>
If you cannot connect to the Admin Server, ensure that the masks of
Hosts and Addresses entries in /admin-serv/config/ns-admin.conf
include the host and address you are connecting from. After changing
these parameters, stop and start the Admin Server by running the shell
scripts /stop-admin and
/start-admin.Thanx for the reply Shane.
i had just stumbled upon the imap log before seeing your answer. i've found and fixed the problem.
the imap log showed the following message
Access to imap service for user@domain denied from client address (*mailAllowedServiceAccess)while the http log showed the following message
Access to smime service for user@domain denied from client address (mailAllowedServiceAccess)after some digging, i understood that th mailAllowedServiceAccess is a user profile property.
For my non-admin user, it was set to +imaps:ALL$+pops:ALL$+smtp:ALL$+http:ALL i modified it to include simple imap and the problem was solved.
ps: some threads that pointed me in the right direction

Plz any body suggest some resolution..vvvv urgent..
Cheers,
ArshiHi Arshi,

Changing config-prop temp-path for admin server
I'm trying to change temp_path for the admin-server from /tmp/admin-server-* to /var/run/admin-server-*, like this:
temp_path=`wadm get-config-prop --user=admin --password-file=/etc/wadm.pwd --config=admin-server temp-path`
new_temp_path=`echo $temp_path | sed 's|/tmp/|/var/run/|'`
if [ $temp_path != $new_temp_path ]; then
wadm set-config-prop --user=admin --password-file=/etc/wadm.pwd --config=admin-server temp-path=$new_temp_path
$inst_dir/admin-server/bin/stopserv
$inst_dir/admin-server/bin/startserv
fiBut I end up with a problem. Eigther set-config-prop will fail because the admin server is not running. Or the stopserv will fail because the pid file is not located where the new config states, so it end's up not stopping anything and I have to manually kill the admin server.
Is there a supportet way of changing temp-path of the admin-server, that does not involve having to manually kill the admin-server?
Best regards,
Bjørn Røgeberghi
i am not sure, if you tried this already. but this is some thing you can try
wadm set-config-prop user=admin config=<hostname> temp-path=¨some location accessible by web server runtime user say webservd or UNIX user id¨
wadm deploy-config --user=admin <hostname>
now if you restart the server instance, it should use the new temporary path.
hope this helps -

ate changed to FORCE_SHUTTING_DOWN>Oracle WebLogic Server 11g uses a built in production quality (limited in capacity) LDAP server to store user authorization information such as roles, credentials etc. You can also use an external RDBMS instead of the built in LDAP server. Using the RDBMS security store is highly recommended by Oracle in some situations, especially in a cluster environment (for using SAML 2.0 services).
If you choose to use the RDBMS Security Store, you can configure the security store either through the Configuration Wizard or through WLST at the command line.
The problem arises because the underlying database has not been configured (or not configured correctly). If you're going to use the RDMBS security store (instead of the default LDAP server), please do the following:
1. First, make sure you test the database connection on the Configuration Wizard page (Look at the right hand top corner for the button that tests the connection).
2. Create necessary RDBMS tables in the Security Datastore. I understand others in this thread have suggested this option. However, I want to emphasize that you must log in as the same user you've used as the user name to test your RDBMS connection (I used system as the user name) in Step 1 and run the following script:
$ @WL_HOME\server\lib\rdbms_security_store_oracle.sql (I'm using Oracle as an example - there are similar scripts for DB2, MS SQL Server).
The script will create about 30 or so tables. You can log out of the DB at this point.
3. Start up the Admin Server. It should start correctly now.
Hope this helps!
Thanks! Sam

We have the following setup.
CLLUSTER1 and CLUSTER2 are the servers to be in the cluster. CLUSTER3 is the cluster
administrator. We start CLUSTER3 as a self-managed server and then try and start
CLUSTER1 and CLUSTER3 as a managed server pointing at CLUSTER3. When we start
1 and 2 we get the following:

Don't start the admin server as managed. Removing
-Dweblogic.management.server...
from the command line should help.

Admin server running into issues in SOA.
Hi All,
Can anyone help me.
I have recently installed Oracle SOA suite on Linux box. While I was running the Admin Server I am running into Some issues. Though Admin Server is running fine but all that I am running out of memory because of the Logs. Can anyone help me find the issue and solve. I can do some other arrangements to save memory. IF you could help me for any issue I would be so happy. One more thing SOA suite installed on Admin server instead soa_server1 or soa_server2. I still need to SOA-infra setup onto soa_server1 or soa_server2(on different remote machines) [if this info could help also.]
This issue is repeating every 5 secs.

Thank you all.Hi Ravi,
You are much appreciated for your valuable time and knowledge..
Then delete old domain. Its corrupted. You can clean it by manually updating jdbc datasource files under config/jdbc folder. But I will NOT recommend this. Just delete this domain folder and from user_projects/appliations also delete the folder with same domain name.
Create a brand new domain using config wizard. Select SOA or BPM whichever you want, and also Enterprise Manager. Then at database, carefully select 11.7 Schemas that you created earlier.
Though I have not created a new domain. (still Ravi is correct)
Issues were resolved by updating the new RCU schema with latest version of RCU 11.1.1.7.
Here What I did is ran the rcu.bat on my local and connected to remote DB.created new schema for each components namely soa-infra,orabam,owsm,MDS. with a new prefix.
I did not drop the previous schema for SOA.
went to *Domain-home*/config/jdbc/
took the back up for all the *.xml files excluding read.xml(anyway its just an info file).
Now edited the schema component. Someone might change their schema component password. but my suggestion is not to give any new passwords to the schema components while creating new RCU schema for SOA.
What I did is changed the component passwords (I know how to mess up and also know how to fix if it's messed up) and ended up with errors.
So I have now started the server with the command
./startWebLogic.sh -Dweblogic.configuration.schemaValidationEnabled=false
Still I had errors coming up. But I least bothered about the errors because these errors can be solved once get to know what you are doing.
My server started. Happy then
Went to admin-url:port/console
then Home>Summary of JDBC Data Sources
next lock & edit
select each jdbc component and changed the password and confirm password for each
then save each time for each next activate the changes.
(as I changed all components passwords like <password-encrypted>asdl;lasdfadf=<password-encrypted/> to <password>welcome1=<password/> in each *.xml file at *domain-home/config/jdbc*)
I have restarted the Admin server from Command prompt. Expecting that I was doing correct.
Succeeded. I did not believe that I have seen not even a single error.
My sincere request that don't mess up with any *.xml file if you are not sure and make sure to take a back up
Thank you.
Thanks a lot.

I installed Admin Server as a windows service and when I started it, I got the below errors. Do you have any ideas?
I'm using SOA Suite 11.1.1.2.0 and WL 10.3.2 on Windows

If you see your logs, you server has actually started in "RUNNING" mode. Its only throwing lot of "ClassNotFoundException" because I guess they classes are not available in classpaths. If you know the "jar" which contains which are being complained, copy the jar files to "DOMAIN_HOME/lib" which is simple way to add jars to classpath.
