Cannot repair permissions on new MBP

I migrated from my older MBP to the new 15 inch 2.93 and I just can't seem to repair these permission issues. Not sure if I am taking a performance hit or not but it is bugging me and can't figure a way to repair them short of a complete reload. It seems most of the issues are from I life 08 to the new I life 09. Any advice here would be great

I'm still not happy with it. I just sold my MacPro and old 2.4 2006 version to go laptop only and i put a lot of money in this box with 2 SSD drives and 8gbs of ram tomorrow so this still bugs me to no end. I just may reload everything from scratch and migrate from a backup in manual mode. Most of the issues it seem are I life no less. The issue comes down to migrating and I tried with CCC but I copied my preferences and that may have been the issue. I eliminated all Ilife stuff but still got there permission issues and loading the Ilife after the fact did NOT clean it up. I can't find a program to change or delete this stuff either. Here I just did it again and after loading Itunes update today still no help in getting rid of there permissions problems. Not sure .7 update will do anything

  • Disk Utility, Cannot repair permissions

After finally getting Disk Utility to run successfully, without crashing, it says that all the modifications it found cannot, or will not be repaired. ***??
I am almost tempted to re-install tiger so I can get my Macbook run smoothly again. I have been getting alot more beachballs, and sometimes I get horizontal tearing.

I don't have any ready answers for you on that. There are lots of performance related discussions going on here. You'd probably be best served by bringing this issue into one of those threads or starting a new thread.
    But some things to check:
Has Spotlight completed its initial indexing since you installed Leopard? Click on the Spotlight icon in the upper right corner and see if it says it is still indexing.
Do you have some process consuming an unusual amount of CPU time? Run Applications / Utilities / Activity Monitor. Select show all processes. Click on the CPU column to sort by CPU usage.
Is something repeatedly failing and chewing up resources due to that? Run Applications / Utilities / Console. Select All Messages. See if you are getting repeating error messages of some sort.
Is Leopard recognizing all of your hardware correctly, and in particular is it seeing all the memory you have installed? Select About This Mac from the Apple Menu. See how much memory it says you have. Click on More Info to enter the System Profiler to see the details on what's known about all your hardware/software setup. Does anything look fishy?
Are you running any third party software that might need a Leopard upgrade?
Basic maintenance when the computer is not acting the way you like is to:
Reset Parameter memory (PRAM) -- the place the computer stashes copies of certain settings for quick access: To do this, shut down the computer. Locate the Apple-Option-P-R keys. Hold down all 4 of those keys and keep them held down. With your 3rd hand, press and release the power button. Keep those 4 keys held down. You will hear the startup chime, and about 10 seconds later you will hear a second startup chime. You can now release those 4 keys. The system will continue to boot normally.
Check your hard drive and system file permissions: Run Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. Select your hard drive from the list on the left. Select Verify Disk on the right. This will take a long time (20 minutes or so) and the progress bar won't advance at all. Be patient. If the report comes back with errors, then reboot directly from your Leopard install DVD (hold down the "c" key while rebooting). Instead of beginning the install phase again, use the version of Disk Utility available from the menu bar -- except this time do a Repair Disk instead of a verify.
Once your hard drive is known to pass the file structure verification, use Disk Utility on it again only this time Repair Permissions. This will take 20 minutes or so and the progress bar won't advance until the very end.
Having done these steps, check again to see how your system performance is doing.
Just to give you an idea how obscure some of these performance things can be we just had a performance issue that got resolved in another thread. The poster had decided to swap out his internal drive for a larger drive and do a fresh Erase and Install. His performance was awful.
Turns out he had put the new drive into the same bay with another drive and they were both configured to be the "master" drive on that bus. It's a wonder it worked at all.
The bottom line is that when properly installed on proper hardware, Leopard really is running quite snappily after Spotlight finishes indexing. So keep looking for what's wrong with your setup rather than going back to Tiger.

  • CANNOT REPAIR PERMISSIONS - pls help!

While booted from my restore disk (with Disk Utility Open & attempting to repair permissions), D.U. goes about 33% of the way & stops/displays the following onscreen message: Disk Utility Internal Error
Disk Utility has lost it's connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility.
I used DiscWarrior to rebuild the directories & then ran TechToolPro 4 from my eDrive to check Volume Structures (came up clean).
For the heckuvit, ran D.U. from my Apps Utility Folder. This time it did complete, making some changes. Ran a second time. Results of each are shown below.

This has to do with a problem with the latest update and Panther and iTunes.
    Tip offered by Kappy and others in the 10.3& earlier Forum;
    1) Move iTunes onto the Desktop.
    2) Run Disk Utility
    3) Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
    4) empty Trash.
    5) move iTune from Desktop back to 'Applications'.
Hey presto. you should now be able to repair permissions again.
    Offered by Bee;
    Kappy, et all . . .
This was posted earlier today . . .
I'll have to get the author's name, sorry don't have it now.
It seems that it may not necessary to pull iTunes out of the App folder:
Did you recently update your iTunes?
If so, that seems to have caused a bit of a problem with Panther.
    If that is the case,
Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all ITunes .pkg files
EXCEPT iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg. Then see if you can repair permissions.
Be very careful here, be sure to leave the last two there!
    Cheers!

  • 10.10.3 Photos cannot repair permissions

I have a 215G Photo Library (iPhone/Aperture) and the new Photos app cannot work with it. When I try to use it, it gets 3% into preparing it and then reports that "Photos can't repair permissions on" the library.
    Things I have tried:
iPhone/Aperture repair permissions (cmd-opt on launch of either app, select from the dialog), repair database, and rebuild database.
I have gone into iTerm and tried
    sudo chown -R my_user_name ~/Pictures/my_photo_library
    sudo chmod -R 700 ~/Pictures/my_photo_library
    That didn't work either.
Then I tried moving the Photo Library out of the Pictures folder to my Desktop and working with it from there (more out of superstition than from any sense that it would actually do anything).
I'm at a loss now as to what to try next. Any suggestions? What I know I can do, but really don't want to, is to go into Aperture and create a Smart Album with all pictures in it and then export that as a new library. But that will take ages and I worry that I will lose albums, events, or metadata in the process (though I don't believe you are supposed to lose any of that).

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    resetp
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Disk Utility: cannot Repair Permissions, even on Leopard  installation disk

After reinstall of iLife '08 and Software Update completed, I ran Repair Disk Permissions. Got an immediate red note "error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (sic)." with a flag: "First Aid failed. Disk Utility stopped repairing permissions on 'Mac HD...' because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit."
I went to my Leopard Installation disk and ran "Repair Disk." No problem found. From the Installation disk, ran Repair Disk Permissions. got the same RED INK comments and flag, First Aid failed.
Restarts don't help. Also, so far I have not found an application which is NOT working despite this Disk Utility problem, happy to report ;-))
Additional background. I was reinstalling iLife to fix iPhoto after a clean reinstallation of Leopard and reincorporation of files and apps vis Time Machine. It had been several weeks and iPhoto appeared to be the only app which was not quite right.

Disk Repair can trigger "underlying task" but I've never heard or seen a Permissions Repair do so.
You should never use the DVD to repair permissions. You should be using the same OS version. And of course you can always repair permissions from your boot drive; or from backup/clone or alternate "emergency" drive. Otherwise, the DVD and older version of DU will be wrong.
I know I read that on MacFixit, but I am not sure I bookmarked it.
Don't rely on Apple First Aid, even a clean bill of health doesn't mean there aren't problems which Disk Warrior can deal with.

  • Photos cannot repair permissions on my iPhoto Library

I installed OS X 10.10.3 this morning and tried to import my iPhoto library. After upgrading my iCloud storage capacity, Photos asked to repair permissions on the iPhoto Library. It got to 3% of the import process and then presented the error: Photos was unable to repair permissions on your library.
Apple does not seem to have released any documentation yet to troubleshoot this issue. The last person to post about it did so five days ago and discussions that old are not accessible.

Sounds like you may have a corrupt iPhoto Library.
Note - Apple does recommend you create a back up of your iPhoto Library, as a precautionary measure, before troubleshooting the iPhoto Library.
    - quit iPhoto and all other open applications
    - hold down your "option + command" keys on the keyboard, and keep them held down while launching iPhoto.  This should launch iPhoto with a "first aid" screen over top of it.   Do each of these first aid steps, one at a time, until you have completed all the steps.

    Is this significant?

How did you get the reinstall to work? I get to the select disk part of the install and it tells me the machine is not compatible. It does it on both my G4 tower and my G4 powerbook. Other posts say they are not able to do the reinstall either. Thanks

  • Strange problems: Need to repair permissions after new installation

Hello, we installed a PowerMac G5, which is running as a web server (4D). After we installed the OS X (10.4.9/PPC) and a few days running the machine did have problems starting up as usual. The machine did hang when trying to start up.
We could startup from an external CD. Apple's disk utility reported thousands of files needed to be repaired. We repaired all of the permissions and had the startup problem again. We switched to another computer, a Mac mini (G4). The same problem (again repaired tons of permissions).
We also used Apple's Hardware Check Disk. Nothing found! Alsoft's Disk Warrior only show us a few files which had the wrong encoding.
The web server and its data are running/stored on a different volume (second partition).
We totally do have three computers with the same problems. We are running 4th Dimension, Retrospect 6.x, Share Points, Pure FTP and Mac OS X 10.4.9. We are running several web servers with the same configuration except another Mac OS X version (e.g. 10.3.9)
Does anybody know this problem and how to solve?

  • HD Not Accessible to Repair Permissions

Hello. I hope you can help me isolate the error that is keeping my Intel iMac G5 from booting properly. I’m running 10.4.
It froze after I’d been backing up onto DVD/dumping old data (about 20GB worth). Whenever I tried restarting the screen would freeze on the grey apple logo, sometimes with the swirly icon.
When I ran Disk Utility off the install disk at first it indicated “error detected” on mass storage, but later said it was fine. But I could not run Repair successfully (I kept getting "repair failed" messages), and the Repair Disk Permissions button was not accessible (greyed out).
I could not startup in safe mode. And if I tried to restart in DU the only option was a Network (which I'm not hooked up to).
Once I got a Kernal panic screen but most of the time it was just a grey apple with the fan hitting 900 rpm.
Finally I ran DiskWarrior and in 15 minutes it had cleaned out and rebuilt my HD. I thought I was home clear.
However, even though Disk Utility now says my HD is fine, it still does not allow me to Repair Disk Permissions - the option is greyed out. And if I boot up pressing Option to select a Startup Disk, the rebuilt drive is not one of them.
It appears my /Library/Receipts folder is empty.
What’s more, if I try to run an admin command in Terminal, like
    sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
    I get the message:
    -bash: sudo: command not found
In fact, any way I try typing sudo I get a “command not found” message, even if I try to run other command like chmod.
    When I type:
    Users
    I get
    Users: command not found.
    So I typed:
    Echo $PATH
    And get
    /bin:/sbin:/usr/bn:/usr/sbin:/usr/libexec:/System/Library/CoreServices
I’m not sure at this point whether the fact that the DiskWarrior-rebuilt drive doesn’t show up among Startup options (when I boot with option key) is because of missing/broken permissions; an empty /Library/Receipts folder; missing users; or a missing path.
Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you.

Oy. I purchased an external drive and began installing Mac OSX onto it, so that I could then migrate all files from the unbootable hard drive before running an Archive & Install. That part seemed to go smoothly. But a few problems have emerged:
    1. Though I was prompted to keep Disk 2 of the install ready, it never asked me for it, even though I ran the installation 2 or 3 times. Consequently while I can select the external drive when booting up command-S, I can only see Install window, Disk Utility or Terminal windows - never a desktop, preferences drop down, help menu, finder, all the things I'd typically see when launching my machine. Is this normal? Is there a way to force it to install only disk 2 if it has things it needs for full bootable GUI / access?
    2. Booting up with the install disk, in disk utility I can see both drives but still cannot repair permissions on my affected HD. I tried via Terminal (repairPermissions, chmod or chown) commands; I keep getting error messages (command not found).
    3. Switching cd / to my new drive in Terminal, I was able, I think, to change permissions (755) but when I open Disk Utility the drive is still not writable and "Repair Disk Permissions" is still grayed out.
    4. I could not open Migration Assistant on the new drive via Disk Utility, so I copied it from the HD into its own folder on the new one, but am really confused about the whole Disk Image thing. If I create a new disk image and try to open it, convert or checksum it, it still is grayed out, I can never just open it. I tried running commands in Terminal to run that application on the external drive, pointing to the new folder, to the .app, to the contents, .dmg, and no commands seem to work, I keep getting the command not found message.
If I just run the A&I, I fear I'll lose my data which is why I wanted to migrate everything over before I did so. But if the user / owner permissions are screwed up and the only way to fix them is A&I, I don't know what else to do.
Is there ANY way to boot from the install, run Migration Assistant from the external drive (either through Disk Utility or Terminal) and copy all files from HD? If not, I guess I'll have to cross fingers and A&I.
Gee, I used to love my Mac ...

  • Post 10.5.8 Update - can't repair permissions on external HD

Just had a rocky time updating to 10.5.8 on my iMac. Install took a long time and did 2 restarts.
Once back in business, Time Machine failed to back up saying I didn't have write permissions on my external WB 160GB drive connected by USB. Checked Get Info and indeed it had changed to read only permissions. This volume had worked with TM fine since it was connected in Feb this year.
A restart restored Read/Write and TM ran successfully, but took a long time to back up 1.3GB. Thought I would do repair permissions on this drive but both Verify and Repair disk permissions are greyed out.
It may be that they've always been greyed out and I've never noticed or checked?
Can advise whether this is normal to be unable to verify/check permissions on an external USB HD please??
    thanks,
    M

You cannot repair permissions on a non-startup drive because there are no permissions to repair. You can, however, repair the drive were it suffering some kind of directory failure.

  • Can't update, can't repair permissions, what to do next?

Im using an iBook G4. Anyway, tried to update to 10.4.6 yesterday, the process stalled. Rebooting took a very long time. When I open system updater, the process hangs up about 1/4 of the blue bar across. I didn't know to repair permissions before starting, so I tried to do that later. Disk utility does not run properly, so I cannot repair permissions now. I get an error message about a background process.
The computer seems to work now, but what is my next move? Thanks.

    Vipir,
Neither you nor I can really guess Apple's policy on the matter. You are welcome to submit it as feedback here:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
or call AppleCare on it and offer it as a suggestion.

    Permissions repair complete
No matter what I do, I get this exact same outcome.
    Please help....
    Thanks!

That's normal according to Apple. They put a technical bulletin out on it even. It has been fixed in Snow Leopard though.

Since installing Mountain Lion, Time Machine says says that my Free Agent Goflex (Seagate) external 2gb drive cannot be used as it is read only. I tried disc utility to repair permissions but that block is greyed out. The disc verifies as being OKI What next?

Ok, I solved this problem! I ejected the drive and then disconnected it both from the power supply and the USB connector. I then reconnected everything and powered it up again and Then went into TM preferences and chose the drive as the backup. TM did a new backup (well over an hour) and now works as advertised.

  • New Mac Mini and Repairing Permissions

I've been having trouble with my Mail program and thought I would repair permissions to see if that would help. I ran disk utility from my internal hard drive and ran repair permissions. Apparently it found several permissions to repair, so I thought I would run repair permissions again and the same list appeared. Running a third time and the same list appeared again.Do these permissions ever get repaired? What do I do from here? Should I repair permissions after booting up off of my original system disk? This Mini is only a couple of weeks old and I'm already having problems with Mail and repairing permissions.

Thank you Tim but the computer is packed back waiting for TNT to take it back to Apple. I don't have time to play with permissions, the permissions are OK in the old computer.
This is what may have been your problem. The permissions on your old computer may not have matched the new computer. I think you gave up before the penny dropped.
They sell the computers very expensive and I think they would have to improve quality.
I am unsure how that can be one of your gripes as when the cube came out it was way overpriced in comparison to their other desktops. That did not stop your or I getting one then.
Your issue was a software problem not a hardware problem so no matter what kind of mac you had it would have needed troubleshooting.
The quality of the new mac mini far exceeds that of the cube. Try playing 1080P high definition media on your cube, or even 480P for that matter. Try outputting 5.1 surround sound from your cube without the addition of a firewire audio interface.
I know how frustrating it can be when something just does not seem to work. I have encountered this a few times in my work. However sometimes I just have leave it come back with fresh eyes and try other approaches and I succeed.
What you need to appreciate installing an upgrade should be planned for any eventuality. In business upgrades are scheduled to have the minimum impact on the workplace. That being said I have worked 48 hrs solid over a weekend getting systems up for a monday morning. They are not always straightforward.

  • Had to delete iTunes for computer repair. Downloaded new version 10. Would not open -Message: "iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes"

After getting message below iTunes will not open- just disappears off screen.

Unless you've recently attempted to downgrade iTunes this is probably a sign of a corrupt library file. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.
