Clean Install WIn 7 from Lenovo_Recovery

Hi!
I have a Lenovo T420 with Windows 7 64 (purchased 2011).
Since Hard drive is very slow and full of junk, I would like to re-install windows on my C partition.
My question is (and I would like to see any of your recommended workflows please):
1) Since my concern is that some of the viruses/malwares effected also the Q: Lenovo_Recovery Rescue Partition, is it a good idea to erase a compete hard drive, including the Lenovo_Recovery and make a clean installation  of windows? Note that I don't have any DVD with windows (it's all on Q?
2) what is the best way to perform a complete/deep cleaning of a hard drive (format c: in DOS? details please?)
3) Is there a place where I can find all necessary drivers in one place for T420? (since I will eventually erase a complete HD, inlcuding Q partition)
4) once I put a clean installation of windows and put all drivers up, what then? Is it good idea to create of image of that state for the future? How to do that, which software to use?
5) I, actually woudl like to create again (once I have a new Win 7 and all drivers/tools) the partition Q: Lenovo_Recovery, as is it now. Does any of Lenovo tools alow that?
Many thanks
Cheers

Hi hinkt,
It appears that Z has you on the right track.  Some types of malware can infect recovery partition, but I'd try using the recovery partition followed by a security scan as he suggested. In most cases that is enough. One thing I would add is that after recovery of a system from 2011, you will be left with obsolete versions of Java and Adobe Flash. Be sure to update those so you are not vulnerable to infection. After you run Malwarebytes, you might also run an online scan with ESET. If both give you a clean bill of health, you're probably good to go. However, if you still feel as if something isn't right, then call for the recovery media.

    I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.
I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download.
Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.
The only way it will restart is to pull the mains lead out of the imac, put it back and try until it will start.
This only happened after reinstalling.  Only Apple OS was on the imac and so it must be an issue with the software I believe.....
Anyone know how to cure this problem please?
    Thanks
    paul

This isn't a fix, more a workaround I used when I had wake from sleep problems that lasted from some point in 10.6.x, through 10.7 and into 10.8 (got fixed for me in 10.8.2). It seems to be connected with Bluetooth failing to wake up properly:
System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.

  • Can't install Win 7 from USB with Boot Camp - please help

    Hi,
I'm going crazy trying to install Win 7 from a USB using Boot Camp.
I've got a 13" MacBook (Aluminum) with 6GB RAM (trying to get to 8GB, but that's a different issue), 500GB HDD, running 10.7.4.
In the Boot Camp Assistant I want to partition 60GB for the Win 7 drive, but when I click install I get the error: "The installer disc could not be found.  Insert your Windows installer disc and wait a few seconds for it to be recognized."  However, the USB drive that I used Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool in Win XP to create is plugged in.  I also have the .iso file on my Mac desktop.
Googling hasn't produced any solution that I can work - most seem to be using Boot Camp assistant 3.0, and I've got 4.0.3 running.
I'd appreciate help, particularly step-by-step instructions that I could follow.
    Thanks in advance.

Lion has been out and most threads here deal with 10.7. and BCA 4.0.x
There are problems with burning ISO to DVD etc at anything other than slowest burn speed (2x)
New 2012 models don't have an internal DVD but if you do, then yours does not support a USB-DVD.
So you are running XP now and have Windows XP partition? knowing that the update will need 40GB and that Lion does not support XP.
Look at the other posts I made this morning for some of the FAQ Boot Camp support links.

  • Clean install and restore from Time Machine: Will i lose my applications ?

I want to do a Snow Leopard clean install instead of a an upgrade.
    1) How do I do the clean install and restore it from Time machine during the install ?
    2) If I do the clean install and restore from Leopard's time machine backup, will I retaing all my applications or I will only retain my personal files ?
    - If I don't retain my applications, how will my photos in iPhoto be restored without iPhoto ?

If you did a complete TM backup, then all your files, users, settings, and programs will be restored. You will have the opportunity to restore using TM at the end of the install. I would back at least my data up separately.
To erase and install (i.e., clean install), start up to your DVD and stop after selecting your language. Use the menus to start Disk Utility and erase your drive. Quit Disk Utility and proceed with your installation. At the end, you will be able to choose to reclaim your settings, files, and apps from TM.

  • Clean install of Mavericks from Recovery Partition

Can you do a clean install of Mavericks from the Recovery Partition (cmd+R on boot)?  Or do I need to put in the DVD that came with the 2010 MacBook Pro, boot to that, reformat drive, and install/upgrade from there?
Yes, I know you can make a USB boot drive (which I don't have).  Can I boot to the recovery partition, reformat the drive, and then install Mavericks from there?  Or will there be other issues?  I do not want to restore from a Time Machine drive (which is also on the fritz), I want a clean install.  Thanks.

To 'clean install' you need to erase the partition for OS X…
    Boot into recovery mode.
Select Disk Utility from the options list.
Select your boot disk in the left sidebar and then find the desired partition (these are indented below the disk icon).
In the erase tab, erase the OS X volume and format the new partition as a 'Mac OS Extended (journaled)' volume.
Quit Disk Utility & select the installer from the main screen.
I'd strongly suggest you backup all the other OS's before you begin since it is possible to erase the wrong partition!
The installer will be downloaded from Apple so you should use a wired connection if possible - wifi can be slow & unreliable, it will save time if your internet connection is faster than wifi.

  • How do I wipe Win 8.1 64 from a SSD to clean install Win 7 64?

My HHD crashed on my Pavilion m6. Laptop was out of warranty, so I decided to go with a SSD. I only had a copy of Win 8 to install, so I could use my laptop while waiting for a copy of Win 7 Home Premium OEM from Amazon.
Within that week I had the new SSD installed with Win 8. The system wanted to update to 8.1, which I did. My intent was to ultimatly uninstall Win 8.1 from the new SSD and install Win 7 which the laptop originaly was designed for. My problem is I now have the copy of Win 7 and when I install it doesn't seem to connect to the network during installation so I get no drivers automaticly installed. I have tried the installation connected by LAN and Wirelessly with the same results, no network drivers installed.
I reinstalled Win 8 again with no problems so I don't think it is a faulty network adapter in my laptop. Now I am out the money I spent on the OEM copy of Win 7 because my system only wants to install properly on Win 8.1. Any suggestions?

    m6-1035dx
Install process never asks to install drivers. Now when I reinstall Windows 8 it's almost like everythig is still installed. Even the wallpaper. I have deleted all the partitions when trying to reinstall Win 7 but it's like remnants of the Win 8 install still remain.

  • How to tell if Yosemite is clean install or upgrade from previous version

My brand new MacBook Pro arrived last week, with Yosemite already installed on it.
Having issues with WiFi (after coming out of sleep mode, mbp keeps its self-assigned address rather than getting an address though DHCP or using its old address), I was searching for support on the matter, and one of the solutions often suggested was doing a clean install of Yosemite if the mbp was upgraded from 10.9.
Seeing that the mbp arrived with Yosemite pre-installed, I'm guessing that it is a clean install, but I'm not sure.
I wonder if there is a way in telling if the OS was upgraded to the current major version, or if it's a clean install? Even if Apple only ships clean installs, it would be helpful to know if I need to give support to one of the mac-users in our company if it's a clean install or not.

On my system, the Yosemite upgrade (performed on Oct. 23) left quite a bit of residue that would not be present after a clean install.  The most obvious examples are in /var/db/receipts, which contains BOM files for all of the software installed via the Mac OS installer, e.g.,

  • Clean install of ML from bootable disk, Snow Leopard original OS...

    Hi all,
I visited my apple store on Sunday  who suggested I should reinstall my operating system from scratch.
My MBP is 2009 and I believe came with Snow Leopard installed on it. I have the original disks that came with it to do a fresh install of Snow Leopard, however I am currently running ML.
Do I need to install Snow Leopard, then Lion then upgrade to ML again or can I just boot and do a clean install straight from the USB?
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks,
    Sarah

Do I need to install Snow Leopard, then Lion then upgrade to ML again?
No, it's on a bootable partition now called Recovery HD, hold command r and boot the machine, use Disk Utility to erase the Macintosh HD partition (all files, programs and OS X will be gone) reinstall OS X, you will need a fast internet connection and your AppleID and password.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
If you don't have a backup, need to perform data recovery BEFORE erasing or reformating the Macintosh HD partiton, then do this, just because OS X isn't booting means you can't access the drive and grab files off.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
You might be able to fix your problem in place, without a messy erase and install, that's a last option in my book
Run through this and see if it clears your issue, or least gets OSX to boot so you can copy files and important information off first.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
If you have a boot hard drive, when you erase the Macintosh HD partition, use the Security > Erase middle selection as this will improve the drive's data retention. SSD's no need and it's not available.

  • Clean Install and Restore from Time Machine

    Hi All,
Just after some advice, I'm thinking of doing a clean install of OS X when Mavericks comes out. I've been a Mac user for 13 years and have always used Migration Assistant to move my data over whenever I've bought a new Mac. I've never done a clean install before, but I've noticed over the years all the crap that's floating around my hard drive from old Mac's and various files from software I've removed years ago. I'm sure there's tons of rubbish that's accumulated over the 13 years.
Someone suggested clean installing OS X and then using Migration Assistant to load all my data back on from a Time Machine backup, but customise what I want to restore. I was told that if I don't choose to restore System Settings or something similar then it should just restore all my other stuff such as apps, files, itunes and iphoto library, etc. but would leave out all the rubbish. Is that the case?

    TJ Skywasher wrote:

Largely agreeing with baltwo, it's probably not worthwhile.

No.  If you transfer everything with Setup Assistant when the Mac first starts (preferred), or Migration Assistant later, and leave everything selected, it will transfer everything except OSX (which you just replaced) -- all your apps, user home folders, data, settings, etc.  There's rarely a point to that.
With either Assistant, you can omit some broad categories of things, but you can't "pick and choose" individual items even if you knew which ones you wanted.  See Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion.  Read the first few paragraphs, then scroll down to the Transfer Your Information windows and the pink boxes below them for details.  The windows and procedures for Mavericks may be somewhat different, but functionally the same.
If your Mac is just full of junk, be sure it's well backed-up just in case, then delete what you know you don't need.
If it's sluggish, after trying everything else, as a last resort you might want to do a clean install transferring everything except apps, then reinstall the extra and 3rd-party apps you want from the original discs or re-download them.  If you have a lot (you probably have more than you think), that can be a daunting task.  You''ll also need the serial numbers / purchase keys for them.

  • Doing a clean install/upgrade, restoring from TM Backup

I am going to do a clean install of Mountain Lion on my iMac, currently running Lion. After I do a clean install of Lion, can I then restore settings and applications from the TM backup made before the upgrade or will this overwrite newer files created by the Lion clean install?
    Salnews

If I understand correctly a clean install wipes the hard drive which is my intent. Merely installing Mountain Lion over Lion is not going to clear unwanted apps, etc.
I believe I found my answer elsewhere which states it would be better  for me to reinstall apps rather than restoring from Time Machine backup  since I would be copying some stuff I'm trying to get rid of.

  • Clean instal Mountain Lion - from mountain lion

    Hi all,
I have upgraded my OS 10.6.8 to the last version of Mountain Lion but my computer seems really slow. I used Onyx to clean and try to optimize it but still looks quite slow.. I would like to make a clean instalation to get rid of everything and start back with brand new OS and clean disk.
I have seen some conversation to use a DVD or USB key to do that but it seems it should be done from my previous OS..
Your help is much appreciated ;-)
    Thanks

So there is no need to mount it on an USB key than? Everything will be done via internnet so donwloading again (I just finished downloading for the 2nd time) i suppose.
Starting back from this recovery partition, it says "keeping your files and user settings intact", would this anyway clear everything else (any programes, any left register modifications from erased progs, etc)?.
I did a complete back up for all my data so I am ready to erase everything left on the main disk.
Thanks both for your quick answer!!

  • Doing a clean install of W7Pro from XP. How to save and re-install my FF settings

    Hi
1st question. Is it ok to use XP after Microsoft stops support. What's the danger, if any. How do I keep it safe. Will virus and malware protection be enough. Some computer experts say it's ok to keep using it for at least a few years.
If I update the OS, it will be to Windows 7 Pro with a clean install. I will need to backup my important stuff. As far as FF goes, I will have to re-install it so how do I save all my FF settings, bookmarks etc and re-install them.
    Thanks

    Hello
I have been unable to install the netflix-desktop app and pipelight from the aur.
The thing is that i start the installation process from terminal (yaourt -S pipelight) and when there is supposed to popup a installation wizard gui, i get nothing, just the terminal showing some weird output (the sort of output you see when you start a gui app from the terminal).
Any ideas on how i can fix the issue?
    Thanks

there's no graphical wizard that pops up, when you install pipelight (and by extension, wine-silverlight) it does it all in the terminal. building wine-silverlight takes some time, so be patient

i tried to install vista... 2-0...   problems win.
anyone... just tell me something to do??????????

Just curious , did you get the problem sorted?
If not , try installing XP with cpu not overclocked.
Then overclock it back to 3ghz when XP all installed, and see if it runs stable, if strange things start happening then underclock it or increase voltages on ram..
    Just a thought
