Not sure which resources you used to configure this, but this looks like Cisco ACS server, so "Generic AAA server" will cause us to parse logs from this device wrong on MARS.

Machine authentication with MAR and ACS - revisited

I'm wondering if anyone else has overcame the issue I'm about to describe.
The scenario:
We are happily using ACS 4.1 to authenticate wireless PEAP clients to an external Windows AD database.
We do have machine authentication via PEAP enabled, but at this time we are not using Machine Access Restrictions as part of the external database authentication configuration.
The clients (we care about) are using the native XP ZWC supplicant and are configured to "authenticate as machine when available".
The passed authentications log does successfully show the machines authenticating.
The challege:
We only want to permit users on our PEAP protected WLAN if the machine they are using has an account in the domain (and they are a Windows XP box - the currents standard corporate image).
In a testing lab, we enable Machine Access Restrictions, with the access mapped to "No Access" if there is no machine auth, or if machine auth fails. If a machine is shut down and boots fresh, or if the logged on user chooses to logoff while on that WLAN - we see the Windows box sends its machine authentication. As I understand it - a windows XP box will only attempt to authenticate as a machine when a user logs off, or upon initial boot.
In our environment (and I'm sure many others) - if a user comes into the office and docks their laptop and is attached to the wired LAN and boots or logs on - the machine maybe authenticating - but it is authenticating directly to the AD as our wired LAN is not using 802.1x or ACS radius.
So the user maybe logged on and working on the network - and then choose to undock which activates the wireless.
The problem then - the machine does NOT attempt to authenticate as a machine and only processes the user credentials - which get passed onto ACS vial the WLC - and when MAR is enabled with the No Access mapping for no machine auth - the user auth obviously fails.
Has anyone seen / over come this ?
Our goal is to enforce that only standard XP imaged machines get on the wireless PEAP network (where the configuration is maintained by GPO).

If all of your clients are Windows machines, it's easier to stick with PEAP for machine auth, user auth, or both. However, your RADIUS (ACS) server should have a certificate that the clients trust. You can configure the clients to ignore the RADIUS server cert, but then your clients will trust any network that looks/works like yours. Get a cert/certs for your RADIUS server(s).
You can have PEAP and EAP-TLS configured on your ACS server without causing problems for your PEAP clients (be aware that most of my experience is with 4.1/4.2. Earlier versions may not work the same way). Your comment about what you're testing is confusing me. Let's say you have (only) PEAP configured for machine auth on both the client and the ACS server (no user auth is configured on the client, or in ACS). Your client will offer it's machine account AD credentials to the ACS server in order to authenticate to the network. Those credentials will be validated against AD by your ACS server, and then the machine will get an IP address and connect to your network. Once your machine is on the network, and a user tries to log on, then the user's AD credentials will be validated against AD (without any involvement of ACS). You should not need PEAP and EAP-TLS together. Both are used for the same purpose: 802.1X authentication for network access. PEAP only uses AD to validate machine credentials (or user credentials), because you configured your ACS server to use AD as a user database for validating 802.1X credentials. You could just have easily used PEAP on the client side, but told ACS to an LDAP connection to a Linux box with a user/machine database. Validating credentials for network access (802.1X) is not the same thing as authenticating to AD for server/printer/email/whatever access. I wish I could explain this better...

I am trying to authenticate admin users with AAA authentication for ACE management.
This is what I've done:

Backup and restore ACS

i have a ploblem: i backup database from ACS SE 4.0, after import that database into ACS Window 4.0 and upgrade ACS window 4.0 to 4.1. Backup database from ACS window 4.1 and import it into ACS SE4.1, after restore database into ACS SE 4.1 TACACS service is runing nomal but RADIUS is not running, what is erro??

The ACS Backup feature provides the option to back up your user and group databases, and your ACS system configuration information to a file on the local hard drive. You can manually back up the ACS system. You can also establish automated backups that occur at regular intervals, or at selected days of the week and times. Maintaining backup files can minimize downtime if system information becomes corrupt or is misconfigured. We recommend copying the files to the hard drive on another system in case the hardware fails on the primary system.

3rd party Certificate and AAA Authentication

I am using a cisco asa5520 and i have set up remote access vpn with an AnyConnect connection profile.
In the connection profile i have set up that users should authenticate using both certificate and AAA.
Due to a high security requirement, the user certificate is issued from a 3rd party.
This is working fine and the user now need a valid certificate and a username/password to authenticate successfully.
I added the CA certificate as a associated trustpoint on the ASA box to get the certificate verification working.
Problem:
If Jane and Joe both have a valid certificate AND a valid username/password, Jane could authenticate using a combo of Joes certificate, and Janes username/password. Both are valid (isolated), but i only want jane to be able to authenticate with her username/password and her personal certificate.
I got an idea that i could put the Serial Number of the users certificate on the user object in AD (on the users department field or something like that) and check if this value match during authentication.
So, to sum things up, i want to compare the Serial Number (SER) field of the users certificate with a field on the user object in AD during authentication. As far as i can see the user would need a valid certificate and a valid username/password to authenticate. The user would also be authenticated only if the serial field match the value on the user object in AD.
I am happy for any help that could point me in the right direction on how to accomplish this.

I actually got a better idea, and i think this will work great!
One of the guys at work pointed out that the sAMAAccountName is still used in many areas even though it is called pre-windows 2000.
After some trying and failing i got the idea that should try to change the "Naming Attribute(s)" on the defined AAA (ldap) server under "AAA server groups".
So i change the Naming attribute to "department", and put in the certificate serial number. I changed the connection profile and specified that it should use the "SER" value from the certificate as username. After that i tried to log in, and voila:

The ldap debug is clear, the ldap query during authentication is now searching for the user using the department field, and looking for the value of the serial number from my certificate.
I wasnt quite happy about using the "department" field and i took a look at the user object looking for a more suitable attribute. To my surprise the user has got a "serialNumber" attribute, and it can hold multiple values. I changed the "Naming Attribute(s)" from "department" to "serialNumber" and added the serial number from the certificat to the "serialNumber" attribute on the user object:

I will settle for this solution, i cant see any issues regarding security, and it will be a breeze to admin. I will make a tool now so i can search for users in AD and update/view this attribute on the user objects.

Wife about to give birth and Disk Utility failing to repair HD.

Good morning. Starting last night I began having serious issues with my 2007 20" 2.4ghz iMac. I hope someone can help before I employ the "nuke" option.
First a little background. My wife is about to give birth to our second child. I have several in-laws in town and my house is a wreck. So, last night I thought it would be a great time to upgrade my iPhone 3G to iOS 4. I am not implying that updating my phone caused the problems with my iMac but they started about 30 seconds after pushing the "Update" button in iTunes.
The phone did update to iOS 4 after about 3 hours of backing up but immediately the iMac started "hanging up" and the spinning beach ball appeared for minutes at a time. late last night after my iPhone was functioning again, I went to bed.
This morning, the iMac was still responding very slowly and I was getting the spinning beach ball for even longer periods of time. So, I rebooted the machine and upon reboot the iMac would get stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo and a spinning gear.
I tried all of the methods on this support document.

It would not boot into Safe Mode.
I reset the NVRAM/PRAM.
I checked the power cables.
I removed all USB and perpherial attachments. (Including even trying to boot without the keyboard or mouse plugged in.)
After booting from the Install DVD and running Disk Utility, Disk Utility was telling me that almost the entire HD is available and that it could not repair the disk. I was receiving "Invalid Node Structure" and "Volume Check Failed" error messages.
So the last thing the support document suggested was a complete erase and re-install. I have been running Time Machine, but have never actually used it to recover anything, much less the 1000s of photos and 1000s of songs on the iMac.
Is there anything else I can or should try before pulling the plug and erasing the hard drive and praying that Time Machine has worked?
My very pregnant wife will have a heart attack if we lost everything on the computer. (I really am not joking that she might go into labor any second, her due date was last week.)

I'm getting you have a lot on your mind right now, try not to not worry about it. Might be time to take a few deep breaths and try to relax.
If you have had your machine connected to Time Machine and it has been doing backups (I'm sure it has been) you have done everything necessary.
You can attempt an erase and restore however if your disk is dodgy or has failed at best it's a temporary solution. As I stated I would recommend taking it into an AASP and have it looked at.

I tried to uninstall Itunes and then reinstall the 11.03 version but that didnt work either. I want to know if i copy all of the music in my itunes folder to an external without consolidating can i still transfer all my itunes music from my current windows xp pc to a brand new one and have my current itunes library in my new pc? Basically i just want to know 3 things: What exactly does consolidating the itunes library do? Can i copy, paste, and transfer my itunes library to an external and from there to a new pc? Will i be able to transfer my itunes library without consolidating the files?

I have found a temporary solution, allowing the previous version of iTunes (v. 11.1.3 (x64) in my case) to be re-installed. It will allow you to re-establish use of iTunes until the Apple software engineers fix the most recent disasterous upgrade (v. 11.1.4). Linux on my X220T (and why it failed)

I’m sorry but this is going to be a long post but I have seen so many posts out there from people in my position - making an attempt to migrate from Windows to Linux - that I felt compelled to share my experiences. This is not a Linux bashing post either. Like UFOs, I want to believe. I just haven’t seen the light yet so if there are any Linux evangelists out there who have got Linux working on their X220T then I would *love* to hear from you
Background and reasons for change:
I am not your ordinary Windows user. I work in IT and I’ve been working with Windows since the days of v2 (yes I’m that old) running on Dos. I’m comfortable with it. Because of my age I’m also comfortable with the command line. I’ve worked with Xenix (a variant of the original Unix) and have a grasp of the fundamentals. Now I’m all grown up and an IT consultant I wanted to ‘round out’ my understanding of my business by getting to grips with Linux in order to write code. I understand it’s very different to the nice little bubble of Visual Studio where everything happens around you. I’ve yet to find out Sure I can produce a virtual machine and learn in there but wanted to immerse myself in it all so decided to convert my X220T. This little beauty is not my main work computer so I could sacrifice the contents. If your X220T is your only machine and you need it for serious stuff, think carefully before going ahead.
Starting point:
My X220T was pretty much out-of-the-box Windows 7. It was working fine, but had the odd glitch. Wouldn’t hibernate properly (although it did before an ‘upgrade’ screwed it up) and the mouse kept losing its settings despite following all the advice, upgrading, hacking etc to fix it. I also had Windows 8 preview on the ‘Q’ drive and was liking that but of course it’s not really ready to go yet.
My choice was Linux Mint with the KDE desktop. Did a bit of digging. Seemed to do the job. So I took several backups, trashed the drive and installed it.
My previous experiences with Linux have always been a battle to get the OS to see certain devices. Wireless cards never used to work. Peripherals failing. Not resuming from hibernate. That kind of thing. This time it was flawless. It simply installed. Everything appeared to work! Fantastic!! Of course it wasn’t all there yet. But because my internet access was up and running (had always been an issue before) I was a happy man.
Then three things happened almost simultaneously.
I wanted to read an eBook and the screen wouldn’t rotate
I couldn’t log on using my fingerprint reader
My fan wouldn’t shut up
So thought I would tackle the first issue. KDE supports a tool that pops a nice little icon on to your task bar to allow screen rotation. Didn’t work. What it did do was install the Wacom drivers to manage the touch screen and it would re-orientate the mouse ‘as if’ the screen had rotated, but the display itself was in portrait mode. So spent two evenings after work working out how to make this happen. In the end I wrote two shell scripts to rotate the screen AND to set the Wacom drivers to orientate the mouse and stylus properly. Job done! Felt pleased with myself. I was cross that the KDE interface screen button thingy didn’t work properly but that’s life. I had learned something. Two dos-like icons on my task bar flipped my screen (albeit slowly) from landscape to portrait and back again.
Meanwhile, I’m sitting in my conservatory (no power) and watching my battery disappear in about two hours. Under windows, my usage pattern gave me at least five hours before a re-charge. And that pesky fan didn’t run once! Peace!! But not with Linux. It was annoying so thought I would tackle that next. Everyone uses their machine differently so since power consumption is quite subjective I thought if I fixed this I could move on to other things and then ‘suddenly notice’ that my battery is still powering my baby after four or five hours.
After research and digging into a cpu frequency daemon (background process) I realised that this was the wrong line of attack. That took another two evenings of work. The Linux Mint kernel doesn’t support this. More research suggested that this was an old/different methodology and the approach was to use cpu ‘governers’ to control cpu frequency switching. The governers have names like ‘ondemand’ and ‘conservative’ and as you might guess, the conservative one holds the processor speed down to reduce power consumption. You may assume dear reader that I had done all the other stuff. Turning off bluetooth only happened in software and I gave up before researching that. It may be possible to turn it off in hardware via the operating system but didn’t get that far. Screen brightness, wireless etc. Typically when I read a book I flick the hardware radio-off switch on the side which of course turns off bluetooth and wireless, so they were taken out of the equation in terms of power consumption.
After another evening of digging I managed to discover how to instruct the machine to use the ‘conservative’ governor. By now I’m starting to get a bit fed up. My philosophy was partly to learn what it was like to live in the world of Linux, but mostly to get to grips with the C++ compilers, possibly mono (A windows-like development environment) and Apache (system for hosting web sites) but hadn’t got beyond the foibles of the operating system. Finally got the conservative governor in place, rotated my screen (still working!) and settled down to a good read (purely for testing purposes of course
Within five minutes, on the came the pesky fan. Battery gone in about three hours. This had me seriously pissed off by now. But still wanted to battle on. Thought I would tackle the fingerprint reader next. Found a driver but it didn’t work. I could register a fingerprint but when it came to save the results it died. Even as the godlike super user it failed.
Then I found another gui based app and that one worked. Well, it worked nicely in-system. Anything that needed elevated privileges it would work for. I just couldn’t use it to log in. When the laptop was in tablet mode I couldn’t authenticate with my fingerprint reader and there was no on-screen keyboard to use as an alternative.
And it was all these little things that eventually drove me screaming back towards Windows. I’m now running Windows 8 CP as my main desktop. It’s incomplete and has its own set of foibles, but by installing some of the drivers that Lenovo supply for Windows 7 it is perfectly usable.
The screen rotates out of the box
The buttons along the bottom of the screen work to rotate the screen (never did get that working in Linux but it was on my list
Power consumption is back to being pretty good for a laptop rather than just average
I can turn my bluetooth off at the hardware level but leave my wireless running so that I can browse the internet without hammering my battery too much (using the Lenovo on-screen utility form Windows7)
I can logon with my fingerprint reader and when it fails (I get it wrong three times) I can revert to an on-screen keyboard to get me out of trouble without having to switch to desktop mode to do it.
I know they are small things but they are now what I am used to and what I expect from my operating system so why should I do without them?
My feeling as I sit here writing is that Linux is great. Don’t get me wrong here. I still love it and intend to explore further, but unlike Windows there is a learning curve that you HAVE to climb. You have no choice. When I come home at the end of the day, sure I want to play with my little Lenovo and have some fun. But then I want to relax. Do a bit of surfing, read my ebooks and generally do stuff that the operating system is intended to support. Instead the operating system got in the way of my user experience rather than supporting my user experience. The problem for me is that wihlst I can produce a Linux machine in vmWare or VirtualBox, the driver woes I’ve just described are hidden from you because those virtual worlds either abstract the problem away or don’t port-over the hardware from the host that you want to explore the problems with. The only solution is to buy another X220T to play with and that’s not worth it for me.
I also think that my relatively large understanding of Windows frustrates my experience of because I am now a novice with the computer which I’m definitely not used to and that of course skews my perception.
So if there are any Linux superheroes out there who have solved all the above issues and can lead me into the glorious sunshine of developing in the wonderful world of Linux then please talk to me. And for the rest of you guys in my position for whom this has struck a chord, if you want to play, I’m sure the results are worth it but prepare to be frustrated!!

Hi all. I must be in league with the devil as my lucky number is 13. When I saw Galloping Gerbil or Raring Rhinocerous or whatever the **bleep** thing is called I also saw v13.04 and thought that the time had come to go again!
So it's about a year on now. Two important things have happened. The first is that my trusty old X220T is now no longer my primary machine so I can afford to lose it to experimentation for a while. The second is that the huge behemoth that is Linux is rolling over the bugs and niggles that sent me screaming back to Windows all those months ago.
So I've tried again with Raring Ringtail v13.04 and right now I feel as if I've come home! It's still not right but it's pretty close! More importantly, I fee that I'm no longer in the minority in wanting to get this to work right. There is this big push out there towards touch screen so people are spending time on this and wanting their software to be touch screen friendly so it is!
Before I go on, I was rather shocked when I did my pre-13.040-install research to find this post top of the google list on linux on x220! I'm guessing that my thoughts must parallel a lot of other people thinking about making the jump. So to that end, here's some thinking.
13.04 is close. Really close to being a very serious competitor to Windows. My view is that Linux is about there now. The X220T is a complex beast to support. it has touch, pen, fingerprint readers, rotating screens etc. And it all works pretty well. I can do a sudo apt-get install to make the fingerprint reader work. And it DOES work. Reliably. I still have issues rotating the screen but I've learned enough now to knock up a simple bash script that will do it for me. AND (this is where the Linux philosophy works) I have written the script to suit me. I like to hold the battery unit in my left hand and hold my laptop in portrait mode to read books/browse the internet. Then switch to normal orientation to type emails etc. The script only toggles between normal and anti-clockwise and back again. Works for me.
The issue with Linux was more that it was a philosophy than an operating system. You don't just "use" it. You immerse yourself in it. That made it geeky and non mainstream. You can make it sit up and do stuff that suited you exactly if you were prepared to put the time in. The issue was that until now it didn't do the basics reliably enough to suit everyone. I used to read a lot of stories about sons/friends putting Linux on to Mums/Dads/Grans laptop and it working beautifully. Linux is very very good at this. It just works. But getting it there was a right pain unless you were lucky. Now however that out-of-the-box functionality is really really close. To the point at which Tracey from Essex (forgive me Tracey!) can stick the CD in and expect the same functionality from Linux that she could get from Windows without having to sweet talk that geeky bloke that she knows has a crush on her to come in and sort it all out
Once you get past that bit then you end up in this little wonderful world. Without too much effort courtesy of all those hard-working ordinary people out there, I have a machine that will do most of what I want without tweaks and pokes that take days to research. Now I can browse, read my books, play the odd game and "ignore" the operating system until such times as I choose to tackle the odd tweak. On my relatively small screen for example I want hide the Unity launch bar thingy. However if I do this I can't get it back via the touch interface. Enter Ginn! I have yet to play with tihs but I can configure multi-touch gestures to "do stuff" like making the launcher appear with two finger gestures (!) and that little nugget of configuration pleasure is waiting in the wings for when I get bored reading the news or playing silly games. My operating system has now become a toy, a tool and a learning centre. I can now pursue my long term dream (okay I have modest dreams!) of being able to develop AJAX based web sites using WCF in Mono running under Apache. I would say to start by looking on their web site... unfortunately, that appears to be dead.
Based on the horrible ratings on the App Store (1 star for the current version), I'm not surprised it doesn't work well.

I am trying to restore my phone but everyone I go to do it, it goes to Update which takes 2 and a half hours, and everytime it fails. Ive tried four times now. I'm trying to restore because it says my memory is full, when it is not. I'm so frustrated.

I'm starting to think it's either an AirPort card issue or something to do with the Mac OS. I have stopped using wireless as much as possible in my home (have wired up several new Ethernet outlets), and it sure is nice having Internet run at the speed it's supposed to all the time, and with no drops. Might be something to consider.
In the meantime:
Open System Preferences > Network > select AirPort > click on Advanced > TCP/IP > Configure IPv6 > Off > OK > Apply > Turn AirPort Off > Turn AirPort On
Open System Preferences > Network > select Ethernet > click on Advanced > TCP/IP > Configure IPv6 > Off > OK > Apply
(FOR LION: If you can’t see an option to turn ipv6 off, set it to link-local only.)

You cannot merge Apple ID accounts, that has never been supported.
You can contact the Apple ID Security folks per the listing in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699 and they can help reset security questions and get the account working.
