Deciphering system.log to diagnose a network problem
ok here goes, about a week ago my old d-link router (DI-624+) just died, wouldn't turn on or anything, so off i went to get a new one, got a new d-link since other than dying (after like 3 years i should add) it had been pretty reliable.
set it up and all was well, except in the pst couple of days I have been seeing some odd behaviour. The wireless would drop out only to be reacquired a few seconds later (the wireless icon in the menu bar seemed to indicate the wireless was still up). after a while this became very very annoyingso i decided to plug in my Macbook using a good ol' cat5e cable. lo and behold I was having the same problem, connection drops, then reacquires.
I decided to dig about system.log and have noticed the following being repeated about avery 45 secs to a minute:
Jan 13 11:17:05 robin-tibbss-macbook kernel[0]: vmnet: bridge-en0: up
Jan 13 11:17:06 robin-tibbss-macbook mDNSResponder[15]: SetupAddr invalid sa_family 0
Jan 13 11:17:08 robin-tibbss-macbook mDNSResponder[15]: SetupAddr invalid sa_family 0
Jan 13 11:18:52 robin-tibbss-macbook kernel[0]: vmnet: bridge-en0: interface en is coming UP
Jan 13 11:18:52 robin-tibbss-macbook kernel[0]: AppleYukon2 - en0 link active, 100-Mbit, full duplex, flow control disabled port 0
is this normal or abnormal? something odd is that I don't see the interface going down, hmm. also I've noticed that when I am having problems like I describe, that in the Network pane of system prefs the interface that I am currently connecting to the router through shows as having a 'self assigned' IP address.
any thoughts, i guess it could be the router, just wanted to ask for advice here first, and yes the connection is fine when plugged directly into the cable modem. many thanks in advance.
Hi, Robin
Look, I don't know if you're still monitoring this thread, since it's over four months old at this point, but I was having some issues not unlike yours, and with similar mDNSResponder log entries.
For what it's worth, I think this: robin-tibbss-macbook kernel[0]: vmnet: bridge-en0: up
might be what Leopard just can't stand. I've noticed an increase in wifi drops and slowdowns since installing VMWare (which I love, BTW - VMWare FTW!).
My guess - Leo doesn't play nice with virtual network adapters just yet - see also all the threads related to VPN drops and login issues.
Hope this at least gives you some context to the problem
God Bless,
~a

"System is not a child system in central user maintenance network" problem
Hi ppl,
I have added one new role for a user id. After that, I log on using that user id. However the message "System is not a child system in central user maintenance network" appeared. What has happened and how to solve the problem? Thank you. This error message occurs when a user tries to logon to the CUA master system and when his account is not assigned to this logical system (see SU01: tab "systems", displayed only in the CUA master system).
You need to define the CUA master system also as CUA client system and assign that system to the user master record; otherwise the user cannot logon to the CUA master system.

If my network connection goes out briefly due to a problem at my ISP, FireFox immediately opens a "diagnose network problems" page. This is particularly annoying when I don't even have FireFox or any other software open. Ideally, I do NOT want FireFox to even check if my Network is connected. How can I stop this?

I get this from system log using latest version of Firefox:
[32282.000367] firefox:2114 freeing invalid memtype c02f2000-c0302000
What kind of problem is this?
Anyway Firefox seem to be working correct. I would like to be sure that it'snt a security problem. Thanks a lot for your swift response. And sorry if it was a bit too hectic to go through my detailed query (which I did because it was misunderstood when I asked previously). As I've mentioned above, I was informed that updating to 5.0.1 would '''require''' me to '''delete''' the current version and then install the new one. And doing so will involve losing all my bookmarks. I guess I should have been more specific and detailed there. By losing, I didn't mean losing them forever. I'm aware that they're secured in some place and deleting and installing the software doesn't harm its existence. What I meant that if I install the new version, I'd have to delete the old one. And after installing the new version, I'd have to transfer them (bookmarks) back from wherever they are. Get it? When it updated from 3.6.9 to 3.6.13, and from 3.6.13 to 3.6.18, I didn't need to follow that process. They were already present on their own.
BTW, I'm having no problems with 3.6.18 but after learning about the existence of version 5.0.1, I'm a bit too eager to lay my hands over it.
Thanks for your help; hope this wasn't extremely long. -

Bizarre networking problem with multiple 8.1 GA systems -- RT and Pro
Hi everyone,
I'm having a particularly bizarre problem with the networking on two Windows 8.1 machines, one running Pro and one running RT. Both demonstrate the same behavior.
In both cases, networking (wireless most of the time, although I'm not sure it matters) works fine for some period of time. Eventually it just stops working. Resetting the adapter, or flipping in and out of Airplane mode will bring it back again. The issues
happen on at least 3 wireless access points. In most cases, the networking actually appears to be up -- the limited access warning icon isn't up, although occasionally it does realize the networking isn't working.
Here's the bizarre part -- on both systems, local IP connectivity is fine. I can communicate perfectly well between devices on the same internal network, wired or wifi. During the time the networking isn't working on one or the other 8.1 system, other systems
on the network running Windows 8 (and other systems) work fine. There's no correlation between one 8.1 system stopping working and the other.
On *both* systems, when the networking appears to be failing, a traceroute actually gets 4-5 (or more) hops before going out to lunch. Other systems on the same internal network will cruise along to the same point on the route that is failing on the 8.1
machines and keep right on happily continuing the trace.
So that's the bizarre thing -- something on two 8.1 machines is doing *something* to the packets that is causing them to not route properly to a target system 10-15 hops away, the same routers handling the same kind of traffic from other systems behind my
firewall work fine, and whatever is happening to the packets that is causing issues resolves itself for some period of time if I reset the adapter. (The two systems are a MacBook Air and a Surface RT, so there's no drivers in common between them, either.)
I'm completely at a loss. Anyone see anything like this before, or have any thoughts on what to check?
(And, please, if you're one of those Microsoft support forum people who skim questions for keywords and cut-n-paste back a generic reply without any actual understanding of the problem -- like so many replies on here -- please do not waste my time. I am
trying to find someone who knows Windows 8.1 networking, not someone who knows just enough English to use ctrl-c/ctrl-v)Hi George,
There is a known issue about Cisco device. It caused some windows 8 clients disconnected from wifi. I understand your windows 8 clients works fine, when the issue occurred on windows 8.1 clients. However, I think the KB article is worth a shot

My system.log shows numerous errors such as: "kernel[0]: ... dyld_shared_cache_x86_64': owned by uid=89 instead of 0" ...
What is the underlying problem here? Are you trying to install anything by any chance??
update_dyld_shared_cache ensures that dyld's shared cache is up-to-date. This tool is normally only run by Apple's Installer and Software Update, as they are the only official ways for OS dylibs to be updated. But if for some reason you used another mechanism to alter an OS dylib, you should manually run update_dyld_shared_cache. -

RV016 - System Log Classification Problem
I have a RV016 V3 with lastest firmware 4.1.
I have enabled Proteclink Web.
When I check the system log, I see it clasifies the urls the wrong way.
For example, if I go to www.facebook.com, the router blocks it ok, but in the log, it appears like a dialer url, when it should clasified as Social Networking.
It happens with all the urls.
What can I do to solve this??
Thanks in advance.

Juan PabloGood afternoon,
Thanks for using our forum
My name is Haider Ali Malhi and I am part of the Small Business Support Community. I tried to replicate your network and discovered that the issue you mentioned first is present in the old firmware. Beta versions can not really be relied upon as they are not the final product, also I would suggest to wait for the latest firmware to be released because that should solve any issues you are currently facing.
Thank you for your time and patience.
I hope you find this information useful, also please do let me know how this works out.
Greetings,
