External Monitoring - HD Footage, NTSC Monitor

My husband and I are having a issue and have pulled out our hair trying to figure it out.
Using voltaicHD we got the AVCHD footage into Final Cut Express 4 (on G5)...
We've got it in the appropriate timeline for editing.
However, we aren't getting a signal out to our external monitors...
Setup is this... We go via FireWire to a JVC miniDV/DVD deck (sr-dvm700), which is then connected to a samsung LCD tv via component cables (hdd/DVD) and s-video (miniDV)... BNC cable goes from deck to broadcast safe monitor (JVC tm-h150). This all works fine with sequence set for DV-NTSC (720x480).
however, with sequence set for HD... If we go through Easy Setup on Final Cut Express and select DV-NTSC we are not getting any signal... This is with the sequence set to Apple Intermediate Codec 720/30.
In the Easy Setup drop down, if we select HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 720/30 we still get no output. When we select it, it tells us to set device control to HDV-NTSC but we cannot figure out where to change that.
What are we missing? How do we get this to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well after researching and researching, I set up the computer with the HDTV as a 2nd monitor. Using the Cinema Preview (Fullscreen) function, I can see the video we're editing on the fullscreen Samsung HDTV.
DVI-to-HDMI adaptor was the solution.
I realize this may not be the best solution for color correction, but it IS a solution for now... and one that is affordable. Where I finally got the tip that got me off in the right direction was from a guy on YouTube...
Frank's Tech Help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMNLOVn8hes
It wasn't the exact solution for me - but got me started in the right direction.
The G5 I have has the GEForce 5200 Ultra card, which has a DVI and ADC connector.
I used a DVI-to-HDMI adaptor to go to the HDTV.
I used and ADC-to-DVI adaptor to connect to my LCD monitor (what was originally hooked up to the computer).
Then in the settings for Displays, I set the resolution and arrangement of the monitors. By dragging the menu bar from the TV Display to the Monitor (in the arrangement dialog) it set the LCD Display as monitor #1.
Now, in Final Cut Express, all I need to do is go to View... Video Out... Cinema Preview (Fullscreen) and in addition to my timeline playing on the canvas, it plays in full screen HD on the Samsung HDTV.
While no one here gave me the answer, maybe my reply will give the answer to someone else who isn't ready to spend the money on Final Cut Pro (since this isn't the FCP Forum) and an expensive IO Card.

  • Used to, but now can't detect a NTSC/PAL external monitor.

This has come up in this forum as well as others in the past. Here is the syndrome:
    1. iBook (or other) is hooked up to an external NTSC/PAL monitor (in my case a Sumsung LCD TV) via the mini-VGA/S-Video out.
    2. Works perfectly for some period of time, days to years, as far as I've seen people post.
    3. Suddenly, iBook does not recognize the external NTSC monitor, and outputs crap onto the monitor.
    4. Detect display in the preferences only gives the native LCD (ibook) and a VGA external monitor.
    5. This doesn't go away, and no one has found a way to make it go away.
Anyone figure out what the crap is going on with this? ANYONE HAVE A SOLUTION???

  • Ntsc preview on external monitor

    hey guys,
I have an ntsc job to edit and am doing a test so i am ready for when i sit down with the client. I cannot get a preview on my external monitor. Normally I pipe it to a dsr 11 deck when using pal no prob. Tried that with all settings to ntsc land ( flicked the ntsc switch on back of deck ) no love. I get an image but it wont play motion, when i hit the space bar it updates the image from where i was to where i stop but no motion, it gives me a display as if it is set on current from not all frames. I connected the firewire to my Z1 and get the same thing. Using FCP 5.1.4
I used an easy set up in ntsc dv anamorphic.
    Any suggestions ??

my TV and camera will display both ntsc and pal. Just went back to my powerbook and it did what i wanted no prob. Must be an imac thing, will try trashing prefs and see what happens, but will do job on weekend on PB. Getting late here in Sydney, will sort it out later... Thanks anyways...

  • DV NTSC Video Playback on external monitor

I can't get my DV NTSC sequence to play on my external monitor. I know I have the computer/Canopus/external monitor connected correctly b/c I can playback some of my old Final Cut Express sequences on the external monitor. I used that as a test to make sure everything was connected properly. Since I can rule that out, I must be missing a setting in FCP somewhere?
Sequence Settings are NTSC-DV; Compressor DV/DVCPro-NTSC
View>Video Playback is set to Apple Firewire NTSC
Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Thanks.

    Hi -
Go to the menu VIew > Video Playback and select Apple Firewire (720x480):
Then go to the menu View > External Video and select All Frames:
If you don't see an image, then go to the menu View > External Video > Refresh A/V Devices, then reselect All frames.
    Hope this helps.

  • Viewing footage on desktop and external monitor at same time

Maybe i'm missing something, but is there any way to view footage simultaneously on your desktop monitor and your external broadcast monitor (via blackmagic output)?
Right now when I enable mercury transmit, the viewer within speedgrade goes to grey and I can only see the footage on the external monitor.  This makes it impossible to draw custom shapes around objects (rather than just use the stock circle masks) which I use quite a bit...I would like to have the view on both monitors like I have in resolve.
If this isn't possible, is there a quick shortcut to toggle mercury transmit on and off without having to go into the settings menu?
Any help would be appreciated...I am enjoying a lot of the controls that are in speedgrade but there are some workflow hurdles that I need to get over in order to be able to use effectively in client sessions from time to time.
    Thanks!

I waited expectantly and patiently  for Adobe to enable Mercury Transmit  in SG and to be able to make use of my BM card and external monitor.
O.K we got it in CC2014.1...but it is either Mercury Transmit or  Dual Display!
I think this half-arsed solution  is an absolute fail that we cant use desktop and an  external monitor simultaneously.
Has anyone on the SG team actually been in a real world CC and Grade Suite?
At least we got consistency with the blue color scheme if not how Mercury Transmit works across the suite of apps.

  • Viewing interlaced footage on external monitor (HD Prores)

    Hi,
I have a project that I would like to watch on my Flatscreen LCD TV. My project is prores 422 1080i 50Hz (PAL) and so is my footage. My TV is connected to my Imac and set to 1080i 50Hz. FCP is set tot view all frames on external monitor (full screen) but the footage doesn't playback smoothly and still shows that it's interlaced (the TV doesn't process the footage as being interlaced). Is there a way to send an interlaced signal to a TV from FCP?

When in Mastering mode what the MXO driver is doing is interrupting the normal output of your Graphics card and instead sending uncompressed YUV + embedded audio from the application out via the graphics port (ie subverting the normal operation of the graphics card). The MXO then passes that output to its own video output ports for your monitoring pleasure, plus works some magic to translate the signal back as a color critical DVI reference signal for monitoring on a supported DV display.
... Or at least, thats my guess. But as you say, a rough understanding of the process does not make it any cheaper. Sorry about that.
    Cheers

  • Footage Freezing on External Monitor and Timeline

    Hi,
I'm scratching my head over this. I have a Sony HD TV I am using as an external monitor to display Final Cut from by Macbook Pro (I know to get the best quality I should get a Matrox, but I can't afford it at the moment).
The macbook is hooked up to the TV via an HDMI convertor from the miniDisplay port. If I drag the canvas window onto the TV the footage (HD 720p, ProRes 422) plays fine.
However, if I try to play the footage using Digital Cinema Desktop Preview the footage freezes on both the TV and on the timeline - the audio plays fine though!
I simply cannot see why this could be happening. Does anyone have any advice - it would be very much appreciated!!

Pulled it onto a hard drive but it made no difference.
I managed to get it hesitatingly working by checking 'mirror on desktop' in audio/video prefs, but the video only plays for a few seconds then stops.
I have tried various different files and formats but they are all the same.
Unfortunately but I have to go out now but thanks for all your help so far - it seems I will have to do more head scratching and research tomorrow!

  • RED footage not showing up on external monitor (CS6)

    Hello all,
When I select a RED clip (R3D) and place it in the source window to play it back.  It does not show up on my external monitor. (via Blackmagic Intensity Pro).
However, it shows up once placed in the timeline.
This is a problem because when attempting to play footage back for my client, they can not see the image.
    Thanks!
    - Ryan

I have cs6 but dont have BM card and dont do what youre doing on set etc... but have worked on sets a lot and if youre trying to show producer, director, client ...stuff.... fast.... the best thing is just to do what works fastest... IMO you should just dump your clips into a sequence ( call it previews or something )... timeline and play the stuff so the program monitor is getting the and in turn going to your external monitor.. You can also ( at that point.. on timeline ) decide what to do with fast color correction type stuff ( looks etc ).... so they see something at least close to what they wanna see....
The source monitor has traditionally been a way to set in out points to sorta do a quick edit of what you wanna use... and drop that into timeline from there...it was never intended to be a program monitor...and thats what BM is also dealing with.
    good luck..

  • External monitoring of footage?

    I'm running Soundtrack pro 3
Is it possible to monitor the video on a external monitor, or even just increase the size of the video in Soundtrack pro 3. Previously I was able to just drag the video to what ever size i wanted it to be, but i now seem limited at resizing it
    Niel

Go to Preferences>Video Out and set that how you want, based on your system. If you set it desktop preview, you can go big on your monitor by using the key command Control V and use escape to get out of it.

  • External Monitor not showing.

    Good Day All,
I seem to be having problems with setting up my external monitor...
I have a JVC tape deck, I forgot the model, and a SONY TV(forgot the model).
What I did was I used a firewire plugged it to the back of my g5 then onto my tape deck. From my tape deck to my TV.
Then I set my stuff all up in FCP.
    1. VIEW> Using FIREWIRED DV PAL
(As a note my FCP recognizes the FIREWIRE becoz when I unplug the firewire the FCP notices and gives a warning)
    2. VIEW> Set to ALL FRAMES.
    3. Mirrored on Desktop.
And when I Log and Capture I see the footage on the TV and on my monitor and yes I closed the Log and Capture window before i do anything.
I also turned on the tv and the tape deck then i turn on the FCP and it recognizes it.
These equipment I've used before and WAS working, but the office moved so the stuff was moved. But now, nothing i do works...PLS I NEED HELP. I'm Making a presentation so I need my monitor.
    Pls and TNX!!!
If it helps... I also have 2 CPU monitors attached to my G5(my secondary and primary). When I set my playback to Digital Main/Secondary they work. I've also tried disconnecting the other monitor incase that hampers the process.
    Thank you very much!

Shane's Stock Answer #8: External Monitor Viewing
If you are working with DV, this is simple. First connect your computer to a camera or deck via firewire, Then connect the camera/deck to your TV/Monitor via RCA or S-Video.
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Go to the View Menu, choose > External video > all frames
VIEW>Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
VIEW>Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section.
If you are working with HDV footage, FCP 6 allows you to view this via firewire, but ONLY as downconverted DV. It won't look the best, but you can see it. To do this,
If you need to view any format other than DV at full resolution, then you need to look into capture cards. Several standard definition and high definition models are available from www.aja.com and www.decklink.com. With these options you'll need a proper monitor to view full broadcast colors, but all models allow for realtime standard definition downconvert, allowing you to view HD on an SD monitor.
The Matrox MXO is another option that is output only, but allows you to view your footage on an Apple Cinema Display at full broadcast quality.

  • FCP through to External monitor....Sound fine but video is still frames

    Hi everybody
In January of this year this problem was posted by Andy D.....
+No matter what combination of settings I choose I cannot get video to play on my HD monitor only a still of the last frame shows up. When I hit play the audio is loud and clear and then when I hit stop the final frame appears on the screen.+
I have this problem but only when the material in my FCP viewer, canvas or sequence is ProRes422 (I'd converted H264s to this before importing into project)! If the project is DV or H264 material that has been rendered by FCP, it plays on the external monitor fine but it seems if we start looking at the high end stuff like ProRes, back to sound but still picture.
I might add here that the path to my external Full HD monitor is through firewire to an ADVC100 converter and then composite cables to the input of the monitor. By the way the same thing happens with an SD monitor.
I haven't tried using my video camera as the link through to the monitor instead of the ADVC100. Would this make a difference? I'd be pretty happy if someone had a solution for this.
    Thanks in anticipation.
    Peter L

Unless the camera is a DVCPRO HD camera...like the HPX-170...this won't work. Not via HDV or AVCHD. Playout isn't as simple as it was with DV. There are far cheaper capture cards...Decklink Intensity Pro, Matrox MXO2 mini...but you need a MacPro for those (or with the MXO2 MIni, a laptop with an Express34 slot). An iMac is severely limited in what it can do.
    Sorry.
    #25 HDV external Monitor Viewing
Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor in high definition you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
The real reason why you can't monitor HDV through a Firewire camera is because Firewire HDV cameras don't decode incoming HDV streams and route them to their outputs like DV cameras do.
Good options for you are the Matrox MXO2 mini...$450...coupled with an HDTV. Or a Matrox MXO (DVI connection) coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you good quality.
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well, and the AJA I/O Express...
You can, however, view HDV out via firewire as DV...lowering the resolution to that of DV, but still viewable. This is not full quality nor should it be used to judge the quality of your footage or used to color correct to. This is just a way to view the footage on a large monitor.
Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:
    - DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface
    - An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
    - An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output
Sequence and output formats must have compatible frame rates. For example,
sequences with a frame rate of 60, 30, or 24 fps can be output to a 30 fps device,
but not to a 25 or 50 fps device.

  • External Monitoring in CS6

Harm, I don't know if you remember me as I haven't been here since Premiere Pro 6.0, but I just upgraded to CS3 and now CS6.  These Adobe forums are so over-produced I can't find the correct place to post this question so I hope you will forgive me.  How do you get Premiere Pro CS6 to output to an NTSC monitor.  I was outputting to this monitor under CS3 by using a Grass Valley conterter box coming out of the system firewire, but it doesn't seem to work under CS6.
    Thanks, James

Adobe:  you're a multi-billion dollar corporation that has finally, after 10 - 15 generations, designed a very nice editing app, but getting the final product of this app, what us editors slave over, is still a bag of worms.  Use some of your clout and make this go away.
James, I can only tell you my experience with Matrox, with only two products, a graphics card from 2000 that was great, and the MXO2 Mini Max, which at least for me has worked great so far. I got one of those great deals B&H has once in a while and I got it for about $600. However, the same model without the Max is about $400 and still gives you perfect output to any HDMI or component monitor or TV set.
In my over ten years of editing video, everything I've read and heard from professionals is that a dedicated timeline monitoring card is absolutely necessary, unless your only delivery is for web or local computer playback. There is absolutely no way that a computer graphics card will deliver the video signal that will tell you exactly what the final product is going to be once it's on the air, or on a Blu-ray, especially when it's interlaced. And this I saw for myself when I couldn't afford one of these cards and I had to use Vegas and Premiere with their full screen modes on my TV set, which acts as a second monitor. Any footage that was interlaced looked totally different as far as the motion goes, and the levels were off. Levels can be calibrated to a certain extent, with test patterns and with your own tests, recording a static scene where you have different levels of light, and especially a couple of items that you can barely see, to switch back and forth between the camera's input and the computer's input, but it won't be exactly the same. But there's nothing you can do about the interlaced footage, unless you never use such footage.
As for what you say to Adobe, I fully agree. It can't be possible that Adobe tries to position Premiere as a professional NLE and many people still have problems with external monitoring cards. Before Premiere CS6 I was using Edius, which I stopped using for creative reasons, but there is no other NLE in the industry that is more reliable and fast. Grassvalley makes not only the software but the hardware, not the full workstation but the monitoring card. This ensures that both are absolutely compatible with each other. I used Edius for weeks without a single crash, and when it did it was usually because of some 3rd party plugin. The other very important thing is that Edius can do everything Premiere does when it comes to real time, but without the expensive CUDA card. In fact, Edius has much faster real time playback and scrubbing than Premiere, all by using just the CPU, which makes obvious that Adobe at some point made a deal with Nvidia, or maybe Grass Valley (formerly Canopus) has the smartest programmers in the world, because I see no other way that can be explained.

  • Cannot seem to connect an external monitor

    Hello all,
I have connected my DV camera (Canon XM1) via firewire to G5. Camera set on VCR mode and it's connected (just like as in the manual) I can easily capture from camera and when I do "edit to video" it works and shows my footage on tv. However when I want to preview my footage while working in timeline for example I see nothing.
Restarted it numerous times ect, checked "View" --> videoplayback (set on fire wire Pal, I live in Europe)
    Can anybody help me please?
