Externalizer in distributed environment

Hi,
Just would like to ask, how can the following situation happen:
Entity MatchSet has attribute setType, which is actually enumeration. It
is stored using externalizer methods. This enumeration implements method
equals so, that exception is thrown when object of another type is passed.
How can the situation like this occur, when within equals method i receive
not enumeration, but db value (Integer) instead? It seems that kodo
infrastructure performs this check at some time, but then the question is
why does it use db value, not actual enumeration value, that should be
retrieved using factory method, as specified in jdo file?
