First back up complete but Time Machine says no locations found?

I've just got home to after leaving my initial back up running about 15 hours to complete.
When I got home my imac was powered off but Time Capsule was on.
When I click on Time Machine now it says The storage locations for Time Machine backups can't be found and then has a link to set up time machine (which i already did before the initial back up!).
When I click that link it shows my TC however Available is: -- but it shows times for oldest, latest and next back up. If I click on options I get the Do not back up screen and that is blank but shows total included 276 gig which is the size of my first back up.
If I click on TC in the finder window under shared it just says connection failed.
Also FYI my imac has 2 user accounts, myself and my dad if that makes any difference to the solution to any of the above.
Help?
Thanks
Darren

Under where it says "Connection failed.", click on "Connect..." and it'll prompt you for a password. Enter the password for TC and be sure to click on the checkbox for "Remember this password." Hit OK.
Your Mac will be connected to TC even though it won't be mounted on your Desktop. Your backups should now work and your TC will still be connected even if you logged out/logged back into and/or restarted your Mac.
Hope this helps.

I haven't backed up my computer in over a year. When I tried to back it up today, Time Machine says 'an error occurred while creating the backup folder.' When I check the side of the partition where I manually saved old photos and documents (including all the pictures from the year I studied abroad/traveled a bunch), the folders are there, but NONE of the files are.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be, or how I could fix it? I really don't want to lose all those photos

  • Reset my Timecapsule, my old backups are still there but Time Machine says last backup was never

Ive been using my Time capsule as a router for 5 months and recently moved were I had a router supplied. I plugged my wireless modem into the Timecap and still used my home network. I recently decided to not use the Timecap for a router but just as a backup. I was having connectivity issues so I pressed the reset butting for 5seconds and reset it. When I look inside the drive I can see my old backups, but in Time machine it says my last backup was never.. Id like to get it back to were I can just auto backup and I have the history of the last 5 months. Please help

    Pondini,
Thanks for your response. I selected the tc via select disk in the preferences window. It did a countdown of two minuites. After that a window popped up and said thus.
Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.
Click Start New Backup to create a new backup. This will remove your existing backup history. This could take several hours.
And gives me two options Back up later - Start new backup
Is there anyway to keep my old backups. (naming the drive differently, anything?)
    Help is always appreciated.
    Thanks,

My computer drive is also 250G total. It says that I have about 20G available.
Time machine says my current back up is 260G??? I thought that 1. time machine overwrites old backups as the hard drive fills up. 2. I no longer see the history of when I first started theTM back ups. I only see one back up now and I can no longer use TM due to the error message?
It sounds like you internal drive has about 230 GB of data and the entire TM drive is 250GB? that will never work. TM needs some head room to operate. I don't know how much exactly but I know that it does.
also, i suspect that 250Gb is the advertised decimal GB capacity. the actual binary capacity is smaller and is probably around 230GB or less.
You definitely need a bigger TM drive.

My time machine says it need more room to complete back up, how do i make more room?

    Delete the old backups..
There is a reason though for this to happen. Tell us what model Time Capsule you are using and what size disk it has .. how much free space is available and how much is now required. If you upgraded to Mavericks it probably needs to do a whole new  backup and simply doesn't have the space .. nor can it delete the old backup.
Please read Pondini FAQ for details of these issues.. deleting backups for example Q12

There is also info on how much space is required for backups.

I bought a new external hard drive for backups, but time machine won't do a full back up.
I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?
When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups.  It worked fine, but my husband stole it.
Then I bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) and it worked fine for three weeks, then died.
So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up.  Instead, it took 30 minutes.  That can't be right.  I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that.  Please help.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • After security patch 03/04/2014 OSX 10.7.5, first one, then a second, external backup drive no longer recognized.  Diagnostics for the FireWire one displays brand name of unit, but Time Machine and its own app don't see it.  Where do I start?

Yesterday I installed the security patch, OSX 10.7.5 to my IMac that is about 2 years old.
Today my Seagate BackupPlus for Mac will power on but is not recognized.  It does not show up as a device, Time Machine says the latest backup was DELAYED, last successful at 03/04/2014 9:35 PM (yesterday) and next backup would begin when the disk was connected.  An error message I did not save said basically the drive was not recognized.   I did all drive's  troubleshooting steps, including installing a newer version of their app.  I tried swapping USB for FireWire, changing electrical outlets, etc.
It seems a bit coincidental to have 2 drives "fail" simultaneously.  Is anyone else having this issue after this security patch?  What would be the approach from the Mac side?  TIA for any assistance.
Please see below regarding the second drive.  Is this a red herring, or does it help pinpoint where the failure might lie?
I also have a Seagate GoFlex that WAS recognized until I did the troubleshooting on the other drive.  When I put it back on after testing the other drive with FireWire, it now is no longer recognized.
    Diagnostics says this about that:
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed:          Up to 800 Mb/sec
    GoFlex Mac:
      Manufacturer:          Seagate
      Model:          0x6090
      GUID:          0x2037600121908F
Maximum Speed:          Up to 800 Mb/sec
Connection Speed:          Up to 800 Mb/sec
      Sub-units:
    GoFlex Mac Unit:
      Unit Software Version:          0x10483
      Unit Spec ID:          0x609E
      Firmware Revision:          0x111
      Sub-units:
    GoFlex Mac SBP-LUN:
Thirdly, in after one of the testing/reboot loops, the HP WiFi printer was no longer recognized, but after a few more it came back.

    I have a similar problem.
Moreover, as my external drive is split in 2 for (a) regular storage // (b) time machine usage, I can see in the Finder that I can connect to the (a) regular storage part and use it normally (image 1).
And I cannot connect to the backup part in Finder , nor see it in Disk Utility, nor use it in Time Machine (although it's listed in the Time Machine preferences, image 2), as it does not connect (image 3).
    Can somebody help?

  • HT3275 Why does Time Machine say it's unable to back up because the disk is full -- even tho it's supposed to delete the oldest backups when that happens?

I'm running OS 10.6.8 on an imac from around 2011.  I back up with Time Machine to an external hard drive that has about 500 GB.  Until now, I've had no problemsm, or at least that's what I thought.  But today I'm getting a message every hour saying "Time machine is unable to back up because the disk is full."  It IS full, but Time Machine is supposed to delete the oldest backups when that happens, and keep deleting them in order.
Anyway, when I opened up my backup disk I discovered backups from February and most of March, nothing in April and nothing in May.
    I'm a little freaked.
Does anybody know why that would happen and what to do about it?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Time machine says my drive is full, but it's not

time machine says my drive is full, but it's not. it is a 298 gig external drive with 51 gigs available. my internal drive on my lap top (the one I am backing up) is a 148 gigs with 44 gigs available. the backup folder on the external drive is
    152 gigs.
how can i fix time machine so it can figure out that the external drive isn't full?

Thank you both for your replies. Something is seriously wrong with a backup program that needs that much extra space! So much for incremental back ups.
It doesn't, necessarily. We still have no information on what's going on with your situation.
It's a back up for a laptop and I would like to connect it to the backup hard drive once a week or so, but from what I read time machine only works one way... for a computer to have it active all the time.
No. It works BEST that way, but isn't required.
That just won't work for me for many reasons. Most importantly, time machine slows up my computer and I have to leave it off to run my applications.
Then something else is wrong. Again, without any details, we can't help you determine what.
There is no setting to have it turn on in the middle of the night or once per week.
Not in TM itself. But there is a free 3rd-party app that will do this, Time Machine Editor: http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor/
It would sure be nice if I could back up when I want. Seems like time machine is just one of those ideas that apple didn't think all the way through.
You can. And TM works just fine for most people. There is something unusual in your setup, or the way you're doing things, that's causing your difficulties.
Let's be clear: if you'd like some help with this, please answer my previous questions and download and post the messages from the wIdget.

I am trying to back up my iMac with Time Machine and a connected G-Drive.  I have deleted many old files and in Finder I have 320 GB available.  Still, time machine says: "This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 210.66 GB but only 9.15 GB are available."  What to do?

  • Recently installed a 1TB hitachi travelstar hard drive into my Macbook 10.6.8  however Time Machine says not configured hence cannot back anything up

Recently installed a 1TB Hitachi travelstar hard drive into my Macbook (13inch mid 2010) OS X 10.6.8 .
However now having problems with configuring , latest issue my Time Machine says Not Configured hence cannot back up using this device !
    Can anyone help ?

You installed the new hdd with new install of Mac OS .. or did you recover your old TM setup??
If TM cannot locate the Time Capsule .. is it visible in airport utility or finder??
Are you even using a TC?? If you are using an external drive you need to spell it all out.
Time Machine may not recognise the old backup.. you can usually inherit the old one.
    See B5 and B6 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Otherwise use A4.. delete the existing TM setup and reconfigure it from scratch. If you do that TM should discover and reuse the old backups if possible.. but a new hard disk might not be possible it may need to start over.

  • HT3275 what do I do when time machine says: Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder?

I am trying to back up my imac using an external storage: My passport Studio 1TB.  Each time it trys to back up Time machine says: Unable to complete back up. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.  Does anyone know how I can fix this problem? Thanks

    Plowie,
Do a search in Discussions, "An error occurred while creating the backup folder."
Many of us are having this problem and no fix has been offered, that I could find.
Unless you call "eject the external HDD; turn off; turn back on" a fix.  That's what I have to do every 2 or 3 days; I even have to "force eject", with the concomitant warning message that you could lose data, etc.

Reboot the TC.. Sometimes you need to reboot the whole network.
This is what comes of Lion and then made worse in Mountain Lion of Apple not spending enough time to fix the bugs.
    Read C12 in pondini.

C17 can be related I think.

Since installing Mountain Lion, Time Machine says says that my Free Agent Goflex (Seagate) external 2gb drive cannot be used as it is read only. I tried disc utility to repair permissions but that block is greyed out. The disc verifies as being OKI What next?

Ok, I solved this problem! I ejected the drive and then disconnected it both from the power supply and the USB connector. I then reconnected everything and powered it up again and Then went into TM preferences and chose the drive as the backup. TM did a new backup (well over an hour) and now works as advertised.
