Forte and disappearing code

Hi,
I have encountered an issue when working with Forte and cvs. If a developer creates a new component, say a JFrame, and add some other components to it and there after check in the result in the cvs (.java, .form and .nbatrs), everything seems to work just fine. Then another developer check out the code and open it in Forte then Forte some times remove components from the file and tell the developer that the file has changed (via an *). (Where not using Fortes own cvs tools). It only happens with files that have an form file.
Beside this, the same issue randomly arise when editing files.
Would be glad if somebody could help me.
Mats

I have noticed the same thing. In my case it's the JMenuBar on a JFrame that gets trashed. The menu is still there, all that changes is
(1) value="menuBar" changes to value="(No menu)" in the <SyntheticProperty name="menuBar" ...> entity in the .form file (menuBar is the name of the menu bar)
(2) the setJMenuBar(menuBar); statement in the .java file goes away
and
(3) the menu bar no longer appears in the form.
It seems to be pretty reproducible.

Why not set up a good system to deal with file check-outs instead? We link directly to all of the graphics across the network, but the actual InDesign files that are going to be edited and saved are all edited locally after check-out.
Just my $.02 on the matter...
EDIT: Oops, I see you tried the INX export already! Were these files perhaps pasted directly into InDesign? If so, you can copy them out and save them as graphics and relink to the graphics, but otherwise they are just a part of the file.

>
You want to use a combination of three features, a button on the panel,
code to notice value changes using either polling in a state machine of
some sort or an event structure, and a VI Server property node to set
the Visible property of the VI being opened and closed.
The button exists on the controlling panel. The code to notice value
changes is probably on the controlling panel's diagram, and this diagram
sets the Visible property node of a VI class property node to FALSE or
TRUE to show or
hide the panel. To get the VI reference to wire to the
property node, you probably want to use the Open VI Reference node with
the VI name.

• Re: Forte and OrbixWeb call-back

We have created a business process manager (BPM) layer between our client GUI
and business model objects that supports Java call-in/call-out. This enables
switching out the Forte windows with Java windows for a web solution with
minimal code re-write.
We were able to get most functionality to work as per our design, which
included registering a call back function from a Java GUI in the BPM, but had
to make some sacrifices due to a Forte bug, at least under 3.0.D. We turned
in case #38434, detailing errors when we tried to fire a callback method with
parameters, example below ("callback" was the Java object passed in.)
method TestIIOPBackend.FireCallback(input message: Framework.string)
begin
if callback != nil then
task.part.logmgr.putline('Firing callback');
//WORKS
callback.CallMe();
//ERROR!
callback.CallMeString(message);
else
task.part.logmgr.putline('Callback not set');
end if;
end method;
This may have been fixed in 3.0.F, we found a way to work around it in our
design and haven't investigated since.

Peggy,
1) Do you have experience with PowerBuilder and Forte' applications running at
the same time on the same (laptop) computer? Here I'm thinking
about any potential resource constraints? Memory Requirements?As log as you are using Win95 or NT you should not be concerned about WIN-resources. Memory depends more on what your 2 tier PB application requires than what your Forté would require.

The Forte' application will need to interact with the PowerBuilder application

• Re: (forte-users) Forte and CORBA question

Hi,
The discarding the Java variable that references a distributed Forte object
doesn't cause that the distributed object will be reclaimed. In Forte client
you can use ReleaseDistReference() of the current partition (task.part) to
free the remote object. For Java client, you can implement the following
solution:
- define a method ReleaseMyObject() in the SO you are using to get the proxy
to the dist. object. As parameter for it use something that can identify
your object (attribute).
- your SO has an array or hashtable with your distributed objects, every new
object is added to it.
- in the implementation of ReleaseMyObject() find the object to release in
the array and call ReleaseDistReference() for it,
- from the Java client, call the ReleaseMyObject() for the object that is
not more needed.

Hello Dave,
do you use a copy return or copy parameters in this method ?
If not, then maybe Forte is unable to garbage-collect this object because
it is forever
a proxy which only the server-partition may be able to drop it from memory
(object=NIL).
Try this and let us know what happens.
Hope this helps

We've had a Java client calling Forte service objects
and passing Forte objects back and forth as CORBA
structs with no problem. However, we have experienced
some problem obtaining and using remote references to
distributed objects from the Java client.
The problem is memory utilization. Each time I obtain
a reference to a new object, the memory utilization on
the Forte server jumps up quite a bit (around 100k per
object on an NT box). Eventually, if I fetch enough
objects, the server will crash due to lack of memory.
It seems that Forte never reclaims the memory, even
though I'm not using (and don't have a handle to) this
remote objects.
The objects are very small. In fact, I created a test
Forte SO with one method, getObject(); which returns a
distributed object with a single attribute. I then
have a Java client access the getObject() method
repeatedly - discarding the reference to the object
after each iteration. After a short while, the box
will come down.
Any thoughts?

• Drop Down in ALV Flashes and Disappears.

Hi All,
I have a strange issue going on. In an ALV (built on CL_GUI_ALV_GRID) I have got an editable field with a drop down option.Now lets say I have 10 rows in an ALV. I chose an entry from the drop down in one of the rows (this happens OK) and immediately after that I go on a click on drop down for any other row. What happens is that the drop down for the new row that I am in flashes and disappears. Now if I click for the drop down again the drop down appears. Basically whenever an entry is selected in one of the rows, drop down function immediately after that does not work. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the data _changed event but I am not sure how to handle that event.
I saw a similar thread [ALV Menu Flash|ALV HANDLE_DATA_CHANGED_FINISHED; but could not figure it out.

• [Bug] Disappearing Code

Since upgrading to Flash CC my colleagues and I have noticed several isntances of code disappearing. We would write code in the FLA on the timeline, save, export, and see the movie working only to be scolded by QA an hour later saying we didn't do any work! We then return to the FLA to find missing blocks of code. Perhaps there is some issue with FLA saving in Flash CC x64? Or perhaps the new code editor (which still lags, I was hoping the new Flash could finally pull of a text editor without lag with reliable code completion) just randomly loses things?

Yes, we are upgrading old CS6 projects. However all of the projects I've done in CC so far have been AS3. In some cases, we are even sharing projects between folks that still use CS6 and have noticed that movieclips containing groups of more movie clips do not port back too well but otherwise haven't had many problems.
Both times my code disappeared though I was the only one who had touched the FLA all day and only used CC and it happened at some point in the middle of development. What I found most intriguing is that it hasn't yet removed code that caused an error. It is usually like we write a for loop like so:
for(...) {
// some code
and occaisionally // some code will disappear but both the for loop and any code before and after will remain intact. My guess is that is related to saving or marking a file as saved. Perhaps I hit ctrl+s and the close the project and it lets me because the asterisk has disappeared but it was not yet complete. I had another save related bug in CS6 where for a couple months I would need to save twice in order to get the asterisk to go away every time and then one week it just started having to only save once again after no update. This happens on Windows 7 x64 by the way. I haven't had the chance to install Flash CC at home on my Windows 8.1 PC yet.

• FORTE and PVCS

Has anyone any experience of integrating Forte with an external
Configuration Management environment (especially Intersolv's PVCS)
and if so, did you have any issues in doing so?

Whatever the tool (SCCS, CVS, RCS, PVCS, etc.), the source code control
mechanisms must be unobtrusive when version control is applied at the class
level. The tool must not interrupt the development effort lest it be
bypassed and abandoned. This would happen very quickly, for example, in a
schedule-sensitive environment in which each developer must manually
export/import Forte classes and check in/out of the version control tool.
Dustin Breese seems to describe a tool which does not get in the way, and
I'm sure the major CM vendors will become more Forte-friendly as the Forte
repository mechanisms become more open.
I'd like to add another wrinkle: Distributed Repositories...
All of the traffic on this topic seems to assume that source code control
occurs at a single site. Has anyone tackled source code control in
multiple sites sharing the same logical repository? I say "logical"
because all sites would share the same code base, while developers at each
site code against a local repository to ensure maximum repository
performance. What tools are available to overcome the challenges
introduced by a distributed repository approach?

We at BSG have also developed a source code version control product. It
provides source code version control down to the class level. It can be
quickly and easily modified to run with virtually any source code control
product (SCCS, PVCS, etc.). If you are interested in obtaining more
information on this or any of our other products (Framework, Browser,
Documenter, etc.) then please contact Dan Reid at [email protected].

Subject: Re: Forte and PVCS
I would take serious issue with the statement that Forte does not work
with the version control products on the market today. We have built
a product we call Forte Bridge that works greate with PVCS. We have
automated version control at the project and repository level. You just
ask Forte for the internal hooks to the repository events, and build from
there.
The product supports creating a build, an application ready for
distribution/deployment, with all appropriate versions of a given
applications
projects.
This tool took about 2 months to build with only 2 resources, it
is implemented, fully integrated into our development process, and works
great. We have full version control as low as the project level accross
multiple repositories, and across multiple environments (development,
multiple
tests, and production).
Thanks,

Our staff has researched this item recently.
1. Forte does not work with the version control products on the
market
today. This is why the forte company
put into the environment a systems admin. function. We spoke to Forte
about this and we think the best you could get would be to have the end
result app. (ie .EXE of whatever) be managed by a version control
product. But the day to day source dev could not.
2. Rational software is a strategic business partner of Forte.
Rational makes a product called CLearCase which is a very good change
management product. I spoke to Rational about whether or not they had
plans to provide + support for the Forte environment under the
ClearCase product. The answer was a resounding no!.
I expect that in the next couple of years, as more and more product &
environments may exist under the CORBRA defined architecture, vendors
may develop more tools to support these environments and "catch up".

• Integration between Forte and Tuxedo

Hi all,
I have some specific questions regarding Forte and Tuxedo integration :
- Can I code Tuxedo services using TOOL insted of C/C++?
- Would this services be available to other aplications coded in VB or
PB?
- Who is in charge of the transaction Forte or Tuxedo?
- If Tuxedo is the transaction mgr, can I include forte transactional
objects to these transactions.?
Any other comments about tuxedo and forte will be apreciated as well.
Thanks in Advance

I saw an article briefly explaining the forthcoming Forte Web Kit.
Is there any more information available somewhere? The article
stated that a few lines of code will be capable of transforming your
app into a Web Application. How will it handle ArrayFields, window-
nesting, and some of the other aspects of Forte that HTML/the
Web does not support? What is the nature of the JAVA
integration? Release date?

• Edit forte's generated code

How in the world do you edit Forte's auto-generated code? I know there's a setting somewhere in the gui, but I can't find it.

If you select a component and go to the code generation tab you can insert your own post/pre init/creation code for that component and your code will appear in the un-editable section of the code. This is still not good enough though, because you cant actually change existing lines of code... but maybe you could copy a line of code eg. connectionSource1.setUsername("UserOne"); copy the code into the code generation property box and alter the code e.g connectionSource1.setUsername(userNameVariable); and that should work ok .... maybe not hehe but it could be worth a try :)

• Wht is diff b/w sy-ucomm and ok code

hi,
what is diff b/w sy-ucomm and ok-code
Regards,
Rani.

Hi,
sy-ucomm is for doing the functions what the user wishes to do at that particular event. You use it in menus and other place . this mainly in using <pfstatus>
ok_code is generally used in screen as of I have used. You will define the function in the screen. and you can use it in the main program.
ok_code acts just as a temporary variable that stores the value of sy-ucomm.
When user interacts with the screen elements, the function code that you have assigned is filled in the sy-ucomm field which is turn gets reflected in OK_CODE.
In your ABAP programs, you should work with the OK_CODE field instead of SY-UCOMM. There are two reasons for this: Firstly, the ABAP program has full control over fields declared within it, and secondly, you should never change the value of an ABAP system field. However, you should also always initialize the OK_CODE field in an ABAP program for the following reason:
In the same way that the OK_CODE field in the ABAP program and the system field SY-UCOMM receive the contents of the corresponding screen fields in the PAI event, their contents are also assigned to the OK_CODE screen field and system field SYST-UCOMM in the PBO event. Therefore, you must clear the OK_CODE field in the ABAP program to ensure that the function code of a screen is not already filled in the PBO event with an unwanted value. This is particularly important when the next PAI event can be triggered with an empty function code (for example, using ENTER). Empty function codes do not affect SY-UCOMM or the OK_CODE field, and consequently, the old field contents are transported.
