Handling m3u8/mpeg-ts files in Flash
I am trying to implement HTTP Live Streaming. I have Apache serving the m3u8 playlists and *.ts video segments successfully (tested on iPhone and in VLC). However, I cannot figure out how to handle these file types in AsctionScript ... Does Flash CS5.5 support mpeg-ts files? They contain h264 aac encoded files, so I don't see why it would not; my player can currently play mp4/flv extensions.
Thanks!
One can definitely do that. It involves a lot of byte level manipulations though which very few high level developers would want to deal with. You will have to be very well versed in video formats, encoding and video containers as well.
Look into OSMF code how they handle http streaming fragments.
The truth is, though, that you most probably will not any real help in this forum because this is a very narrow niche specialized skill set that few posses and even care to posses.
You may want to explore this:

Maximum Image file size flash can handle?
Does anyone knows the max image file size flash can load
using MovieClipLoader?
I tried 10.5 MB PNG file and Flash thinks it is loaded but,
the actual image never shows up.
Thanks,Well it is good for that client. But it still won't work in
Flash. Sorry. You will need to slice the picture into different
chunks at 2880 x 2880 max and reassemble the tiles in Flash.
You may also run into an issue that things sometimes get lost
if there is more that 16,000 (or thereabouts) pixels difference in
their coordinates. -
Import MPEG 2 files into imovie 08
I have a Sony Handycam (Model: DCR SR 65E) which records movies on its HDD in MPEG2 format. When I tried to import my clips into imovie 08 (Macbook) I realized that these two are not compatible. imovie does not recognize this movie file format.
On reading the associated manual with imovie08, it clearly mentions that it can recognize MPEG2 format and will import files using USB ports.
I currently have multiple video files on my handycam but cant do much with them. I have used 3rd party converters to covert to other format (MPEG 4 etc) but it invariably degrades the quality and I dont want to consider thsi approach. Is there any way my Macbook/imovie 08 can work with the Sony Handycam?This is nuts. As a Windows refugee I can't believe I have to leave my 24" iMac sitting on my desk and use Movie Factory on my wife's little HP notebook because iMovie won't read my mpeg-2 files.
And I find it hard to believe that there are still people out there who think that that all forms of video are the same. This is like saying a Chrysler, a Mac truck, and a jet plane should all use the same fuel since they are all vehicles. If you buy a camcorder that stores files in a compression format specifically designed as a means for distribution and delivery, then it should not come as a surprise that it may need to be converted to a compression format designed specifically for editing to do a "proper" job of editing in a video editor specifically designed to edit at the intraframe level as most professional, prosumer, and consumer video editors do.
The only way I can open them on the iMac is through VLC (a freebie program I highly recommend). QuickTime is useless unless I pay $20 or whatever for a plugin. How can this be so difficult?
QT has never fully supported any of the multiplexed compression formats like MPEG-1, MPEG-2, VOB, or Flash. While some are QT "playback" only and others are playback only with the proper QT component installed, none are conversion and/or edit compatible with QT processes which are based on the temporal synchronization of up to 99 tracks of different data types and not designed for the conversion/editing of spatially synchronized audio and video stored as interspersed blocks of data in a single data stream. Just as you need the proper engine to run on a specific type of fuel, you need the proper type of video engine to play, convert and/or edit different types of video. Simply put, QT is not a "muxed" MPEG engine.
Why is Apple making it so difficult to transfer videos over from Windows to MacOS. I thought they wanted us to switch.
Apple has no say as to what types of videos you may chose to transfer. It cannot legally provide support for any proprietary codecs that may have been used to produce your original Windows content. Neither would I expect Apple to go out of its way to perform research and development in support of compression formats which are in the process of being replaced and can already be handled satisfactorily by other means currently available.
Has anyone successfully got around this roadblock?
You have three basic options here:
1) You can manually convert the files to any of the compression formats currently capable of being edited in iMovie '08 using a third-party, MPEG-based engine designed to bridge the gap between Multiplexed MPEG video/AC3 audio files and the QT structure now embedded in the Mac OS. I prefer this work flow since it gives the user the greatest control and maximizes editing options.
2) You can "image" your MPEG-2 based content in order to fool iMovie '08 into performing the the conversion for you. Your success here will likely depend on the method you employ and which version of iMovie '08 you are trying it on.
3) You can purchase a MPEG-2/GOP based editor specifically designed to edit your MPEG-2 content "natively." I don't know of any good ones for the Mac and my only experience with such programs in the past have all be unqualified disasters. -
HT3775 mpeg-2 file using OS 10.8.2 and Quicktime Player 10.2
I'm trying to open an mpeg-2 file with Quicktime Player 10.2 and OS 10.8.2. Apple says the playback component for earlier versions of Quicktime is already built in to this version, but I'm getting video only--no audio. My Sony blue ray player has no trouble playing the same file via a flash drive and the USB port. Is there a component or an update that I need?
Try VLC Player

CS5.5 file crashes Flash on opening
Hi,
I've got an iMac and a MacBook Pro both running 10.6.8 and Flash CS5.5.
I've built some files on the iMac using Flash CS5.5, but when I try and open them on the MB Pro the file crashes Flash on opening. The problem for me right now is the iMac is at my office and I'm offsite using the MB Pro. I tried re-installing Flash CS5.5 but that didn't fix the problem. Is there anything I can do to try and debug or figure out why this is happening. Other files and new files are fine in CS5.5 on the MB Pro, just this specific file that I need to work on :-) is crashing.
I'm pasting the Crash Report in here with the hope that someone from Adobe can understand what's going on and tell me the problem / fix for it. It's looking like I'm going to have to leave the site and go back to my office, which is a pain and looks kind of un-professional in my opinion.

1 libSystThanks! I sent some files.
I'm thinking it's related to a font embedded and used dynamically from the Library. I rebuilt one of the .flas a layer at a time and I'm sure it's the embeded font (in the library). There are 2 test .flas 1 with the embedded font and 1 without.
Oddly enough, 1 of the times I was testing a layer at a time the file opened without crashing and then the other 2 real .flas also opened without crashing, but when I quit Flash and tried to open them a again I got the same crash issue and the files wouldn't open.
I haven't tried yet, but I'm going to see if it crashes using a different font. The font is one of Adobe's and used as branded element in the design so I can't really change it for production use, but it would be worth it to test.
Thanks,

High Score Table: Writing a Simple Text File with Flash and PHP
I am having a problem getting Flash to work with PHP as I need Flash to read and write to a text file on a server to store simple name/score data for a games hi score table. I can read from the text file into Flash easily enough but also need to write to the file when a new high score is reached, so I need to use PHP to do that. I can send the data from flash to the php file via POST but so far it is not working. The PHP file is confirmed as working as I added an echo to the file which displayed a message so I could check that the server was running PHP - the files were also uploaded to a remote server so I could test them properly. Flash code is as follows:
//php filewriter
var myLV = new LoadVars();
function sendData() {
//sets up variable 'hsdata' to send to php
myLV.hsdata = myText;
myLV.send("hiscores.php");
I believe this sends the variable 'myText' to the php file as a variable called 'hsdata' which I want the php file to write into a text file. The mytext variable is just a long string that has all the scores and names in the hiscore. OK, XML would be better way of doing this but for speed I just want to get basic functionality working, so storing a simple text sting is adequate for now. The PHP code that reads the Flash 'hsdata' variable and writes it to the text file 'scores.txt' follows:
<?php
//assigns to variable the data POSTed from flash
$flashdata = $_POST["hsdata"];
//file handler opens file and erases all contents with w arg
$fh = fopen("scores.txt","w");
//adds data to file
fwrite ($fh,$flashdata);
//closes file
fclose ($fh);
echo 'php file is working';
?>
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated - once I can get php to write simple text files I should be ok. Thanks.Thanks for your help.
I have got Flash working to a certain extent with PHP using loadVars but have been unable to get flash to receive a variable declared in PHP. Here's my Flash code:
var outLV = new LoadVars();
var inLV = new LoadVars();
function sendData() {
outLV.hsdata = "Hello from Flash";
outLV.sendAndLoad("http://www.mysite.com/hiscores/test23.php",inLV,"post");
inLV.onLoad = function(success) {
if (success) {
//sets dynamic text box to show variable sent from php
statusTxt.text = phpmess;
} else {
statusTxt.text = "No Data Received";
This works ok and the inLV.onLoad function reports that it is receiving data but does not display the variable received from PHP. The PHP file is like this:
<?php
$mytxt =$_POST['hsdata'];
$myfile = "test23.txt";
$fh = fopen($myfile,'w');
//adds data to file
fwrite($fh, $mytxt);
//closes file
fclose ($fh);
$mess = "hello there from php";
echo ("&phpmess=$mess&");
?>
The PHP file is correctly receiving the hsdata from flash and writing it to a text file, but there seems to be a problem with the final part of the code which is intended to send a variable called 'phpmess' back to Flash, this is the string "hello there from php". How do I set up Flash and PHP so that PHP can send a variable back to Flash using echo? Really have tried everything but am totally baffled. Online tutorials have given numerous different syntax configurations for how the PHP file should be written which has really confused me - any help would be greatly appreciated. -
JSFL for automatically import ai file to flash?
Is there a way to use JSFL to import ai file to flash and automatically create all shapes from illustrator as MovieClip? I want all of them to be in movieclip but amount of illustrator layers are too much to handle with manual hand-tick. Is there anyway to do this?
It's "have each shape in it's own movieclip".

Converting Mpeg-4 files to mp3
I have a bunch of AMVs on my computer and for some of them I dont even want the visual part but just want to be able to listen to them.
Is there a way within iTunes to convert them to mp3?
I googled it and I thought I had come up with the answer. I went into preferences and changed "import settings" from AAC encoder to mp3 encoder(and high quality).
When I highlight a video> Advanced> I see the options "Create Ipod"/Create Ipad"/"Create mp3"... but the mp3 option is not bolded(I cant select it). Do I need to change something else as well to make it work?
I even copied an mpeg-4 file and tried to re-add to the library but it didnt convert it so I just have a duplicate mpeg-4 file ~.~
Help? Thank you! ^.^Handbrake is a freeware converter that handle this easily. Its pretty simple to use too.
To get the mp3 audios played on portable devices, just drag and drop mp4 videos into the program and select "MP3" as the output audio file, let it encode and youre done.
It's worked nicely for me in the past, and has some nice features like settings for various devices including iOS devices (downscale to iPod resolution while you convert, etc).
If you want to do that with some other third-party tool rather than this free Handbrake, you may follow the guide here.
MP4 to MP3 for Mac: http://www.ilikemall.com/how-to/convert-mp4-to-mp3-mac.html
All depends on you.

MPEG audio file from Itunes U not playing on my Shuffle. :(
Some of the lectures on Itunes U are in MPEG audio file (format: MPEG-2 layer 3). I cannot seem to play this on my Shuffle (2nd gen). I tried converting to ACC using preference and the right click, but it does not work. Is there any other way? Thanks.
I just realized that also the ACC files from Itunes U won't work on my shuffle. When I press Play, it alternates green-orange flash which indicates that there are no music. ???

How can I play an mpeg-2 file from my handycam on quicktime?
When I try to play an mpeg-2 file from my handycam I receive an error message stating that a required codec is not available. How can I get this codec and is it a free download? Neither audio or video will play.
Thanks for your input. To clarify a couple of things, I'm ultimately looking at editing my video from the handycam, hopefully with imovie. In exploring how to do this I came across mpeg streamclip video converter for osx but then discovered that in order to install it with Lion, I'd need to download a mpeg-2 playback component. From what I understand, this component is inherent in QT 10.1 with Lion and therefor you can't brink up a 'disk image' in order to install the video converter. Sounds like I'd need to buy that.
As previously mentioned, there are three forms of QT support for MPEG-2 content:
1) The QT MPEG-2 Playback Component ($19.99) is required for use by QT 7 based applications (QT 7 Player, GarageBand, as well as, QT 7 based third-party applications like MPEG Streamclips. This component is not used required for nor used by the QT 10.1 Player or iMovie '07/'08/'11 apps.
2) The Importer Component installed as part of your video editing software package. As previously indicated, this package handles the importation of content from various camcorders employing many different compression formats. It's primary purpose is to make the imported content "edit" compatible with the video editing software. In the case of "muxed" GOP MPEG-2/AC3 content, it decompresses/turns the P- and B-frames into I-frames which essentially makes the video QT editit compatible at the frame level without actually converting the video to a different compression format. This is a moderately fast operation which does not degrade the video quality. In addition, the importer component also converts the AC3 audio to QT "edit" compatible AIFF (Linear PCM) content and places both the video and audio content in an MOV file container. Since "muxed" GOP MPEG-2 content essentially synchronizes the audio and video content spatially, the last step in the import process is to add a time offset to minimize audio/video drift in the MOV file which synchronizes the multiple data tracks temporally with respect to an external timing reference. The result of this operation is QT edit compatible content in an MOV file container that is playback on any system having iMovie '07/'08/'11 installed. That is why I always recommend using this work flow for content still located on the camcorder.
3) The QT 10.1 MPEG-2/AC3 GOP support appears to be built into the app or only accessible using the app and not available for use by either QT 7 or iMovie applications. This content is not QT edit compatible at the frame level (i.e., the manner in which all Apple video editors work).
4) In the case where the "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 content has already been removed from the camcoder and you can no longer "import" the content as per option 2 above, purchase of the QT MPEG-2 Playback component and use of the MPEG Streamclip app provides, in my opinion, the greatest degree of secondary functionality. In this case you have the option of demultiplexing the original content to M2V and AC3 content or paired M2V and AIFF elementary stream files or conversion of the content to any QT editit compatible audio and video compression combination including "Pro" editing codecs if FCP is installed on your system.
5) With regard to the installation of the QT MPEG-2 Playback component, you have three options:
a) You can install the component on a pre-Lion system and then copy it to your Lion system.
b) You can download the MPEG Streamclip "beta" package and us the "helper" software to install the component directly on the Lion operating system.
c) You can us an app like Pacifist to extract/install the component directly to the Lion OS platform.
In any event, remember that this component is not supported by the QT 10.1 app nor is AC3 natively supported by the QT 7 app and so you will have to use the MPEG Streamclip app to both make use of this component and provide app support of the AC3 audio which can then be "bridged" for use by QT 7 based apps.
All this being said, when I decided for the first time to just open my video in QT 10.1 (which is a .mpg file) it wouldn't open and the error said that a required codec wasn't available. The file is .mpg and info states it is a mpeg-2 video, AC3. I have VLC installed and can view the video with that, but am just frustrated as to why QT 10.1 won't play it (as I believe it should, since the file is a .mpg).
As I have repeatedly stated, I consider QT 10.1 "a work in progress" and have given up trying to guess why it works in some cases and not in others. In some cases, files sent to me having the problem you describe suddenly became playable in QT 10.1 after using VLC to copy the data from the original file container to a new program stream file container (i.e., not conversion was applied—just the copy of the original data). You can try this for playback purposes but it will do nothing for your editing work flow unless you plan to us QT 10.1 to convert the content to H.264/AAC for editing in which case HandBrake or MPEG Streamclip (with QT MPEG-2 Playback component) would probabaly work on the original file. (I.e., I prefer using a low-compression, high data rate compression format at highest video quality setting as an "intermediate" editing format to preserve as much of the original quality as possible.)
One thing I also noticed, there is no QT file in my library (I didn't move, delete or change anything, just looked to see if I could find the file as mentioned on another forum, but it wasn't there). Not sure if this has a connection as to whether the .mpg file can be played with QT 10.1 or not.
If you are referring to an MOV file created by importing the content directly from the camcorder, then it will be located in your iMovie "Event" folder, the location of which will depend on which drive you assigned it to. Such a file sould already be both playback and editable in QT applications.
Any other input would be much appreciated. Am I missing something from my QT 10.1 that should have been installed?
I believe that covers just about everything. Since QT 10.1 is the original version installed by the Lion OS installer, there have not been any updates to it and, unless you have been messing around deleting things in your QT component folders, there is little probability that anything has been deleted, removed, or misplaced during normal system use. What I normally recommed is that you keep QT 10.1 installed and install the Lion compatible version of QT 7 (v7.6.6 if not already installed) to maximize your QT playback capabilities between the two. In fact, I tend to use the QT 7 "Pro" player for most daily "quickie" edits and still consider it the more useful of the two utility-Players. -

How can I mask on flv file in flash cs4?
Hi,
I am new to Flash CS4. I saw one video on how to use flv file in flash and mask it. It is working fine when I am using the following option while importing a video file to flash:
Load external video with playback component
But when I tried with the following option it doesn't show the background, it shows only movie which is playing nicely. But not the background which has a bill board.
Embed FLV in SWF and play in timeline
It seems the mask is not working with this option.
How to solve this problem? Please help.
Actually it should be like the above.
But when I am using the option Embed FLV in SWF and play in timeline while importing the flv video, getting the result like below: It is not showing the Bill board as above.

How can I edit my MPEG-4 File in FCPX?
Hi,
A friend has sent me a MPEG-4 File that when I try and import to FCPX a message comes up saying 'no importable files'.
I have tried to re-wrap it in Clipwrap and convert it in MPEG Streamclip but it won't even import in them app's.
I can watch the video in VLC but not in Quicktime.
Does anyone have any idea to what I can do to edit this video in FCPX?
PLEASE HELP!
SamI have no experience with, or knowledge of the files you are using but it might be worth trying the free app Subler.

It may be useless but it won't cost you anything to find out. -
