I am unable to open press enter in the address bar and have to click return with the mouse

So when i open a new session of firefox/new window/new tab and click to type in the address bar, firefox will not allow me to hit return/enter to load the page. I have to manually click on the return icon to get the page to load. I have tried using a different keyboard but this does not help. This only occurs within the address bar not within any other part of the page or within any other program. please help

After installing the add-on compatability add-on, Firefox will no longer load web pages or allow me to enter anything in the address bar and has added an additional title bar at the top of the page.

When I open Firefox now, instead of opening up the standard Mozilla start page, it simply opens up a new tab page. Typing in the address bar and then hitting enter results in the address bar being cleared and the page staying the same. Attempting to send feedback via the add-on just opens another new, blank tab. For some odd reason, the Windows title bar has also come back above the orange Firefox button and the tabs.
I am unable to access the add-ons page to uninstall the add-on compatibility add-on to see if that will solve my problem and I have tried uninstalling the beta and reinstalling it, but the problem still remains.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

The change between Firefox 3.6.* and Firefox 4 is how location bar search works. In Firefox 3.6 it uses Google "Browse by name" search. With the browse by name search, it performs a Google search and if there is a clear match it will take you to the site, otherwise it shows the Google search result. With Firefox 4 it just performs a Google search if you type something which is not recognised as a URL.
To get the Firefox 3.6 behaviour on Firefox 4 you need to change a hidden preference.

The address bar and all the command & tool bars disappear from my web page as soon as I log on. The leaves me with no way to enter a web address or navagate.

When I attempt to use Firefox, the address bar and all the command & tool bars disappear from view as soon as I start the program. I can see the scrolling our of view at the top of my screen. This leaves me with no way to enter a web address, navigate or even exit the program.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: command+Shift+F). 
If you are in full screen mode then hover the mouse to the top to make the Navigation Toolbar and Tab bar appear. 
You can click the Maximize button at the top right to leave full screen mode or right click empty space on a toolbar and use "Exit Full Screen Mode" or press F11.

I used to write e.g. "onet" in the address bar and firefox opened page "onet.pl". After reinstalling Windows it only moves me to Google. How can I change it?

Firefox's address bar ("location bar") has an "autofill" feature based on your history. Once you've visited onet.pl the next time you type onet Firefox should suggest that location by pre-filling it in on the address bar. Is that not working? Does it work for .com sites or not for any sites?
Or if you meant more generally that you want to type a word and have .pl added to the end, then you can change what Firefox does with address bar entries by disabling the search feature. Then Firefox will use a "fixup" procedure instead. This change needs to be made in about:config. Here's how:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''keyw''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the '''keyword.enabled''' preference to switch it from true to false
(4) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''fix''' and pause while the list is filtered
(5) If the '''browser.fixup.alternate.suffix''' preference isn't .pl you can double-click to edit it

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode? ''A troubleshooting mode.'' 
You can open the Firefox 4.0 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut. Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. 
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut to open it again.''

Yes, it doesn't work. I ran in safe mode. nothing changed. I uninstalled Mozilla firefox with only standard removal, no change. I finally uninstalled Mozilla with complete removal and reinstalled it, then it return to normal. Why does this happen? Thanks for your reply.

I am trying to get the most speed out of the browser, instructions say to type about:config in the address bar and hit enter, I did this. It now says to rt. click, from the menu select "New" then "Integer", I cannot find "New", I need better directions.

Thanks for the help, it didn't help with this particular problem. I figured it out though, I had an issue with the AVG safe search. I had to just delete the file in the program files x86.

I have all tabs set to open with Google search, but when I open a new tab and start typing, the letters appear in the address bar and not the Google search bar. It didn't used to be like this!

One of my set of home pages is the basic Google search page. When I open this, I can immediately start typing and the words appear in the Google search box.
If however I open a new tab (white cross far right of tab bar) and start typing, the words appear in the address bar, not in the Google search box. Of course once I click in the search box I can carry on: but I'd like to make it start there as it does with the homepage.

If you want a specific webpage (like the Google page) to always open when you open a New Tab, you can use the following add-on to Open New Tabs with your Favorite Pages:

Have an imac with snow leopard and Firefox 3.6.13. On a prompt downloaded and installed Firefox 3.6.16. Firefox opening Screen still shows 3.6.13. Have done this twice with the same result. Any help?

On opening Firefox 3.6.13 firefox screen suggests downloading latest version. Have downloaded and installed Firefox 3.6.15 (sorry typing error in previous entry). On opening Firefox, screen still shows 3.6.13 as the operating version although "Get info" shows that updating has been done. Thinking I may have made a mistake I have done this twice with the same result. The screen is still telling me to update.

Why doesn't the address bar and tabs work after opening a PDF?

I am using Firefox 3.6.16 and windows 7. When I open a PDF file using adobe reader in Firefox the address bar becomes inoperable for any other tabs I have open or open subsequently. This occurs until the tab the pdf file is open on is closed. I tried upgrading to Firefox 4 but apparently the problem is amplified in that as once a PDF file is opened even if you close the tab its on nothing works until you restart Firefox. I am using adobe reader X but had the same issue with 9. Thanks in advance for any help.

Why can't i drag text/link to the tab bar and have it open a new tab?

Whenever i drag highlighted text, drag a URL, or drag a link to an image/video to the tab bar nothing happens. Previously FF would open this as a new tab, but i can't seem to find out what is wrong.

Nothing happens when I drag text and drop it on a tab or the new tab button. Do you need to wait for the tab to display and then drop it on the address bar?
Two alternatives might be:
(1) Right-click selected text, then choose Search Google for... to open a search in a new tab
(2) Hold the Alt key while dragging and dropping the selected text onto the search box/search bar to open a search in a new tab

Firefox opens with no address in the address bar and no back and forth functionality

This happens very often (not every time) I open Firefox: there is no address in the address bar (normally, I would have my homepage address) and the back and forth arrows do not work until I open a new tab. It's a very odd behavior that lasts for a while every time I open a new browser page and causes crashes sometimes... I have saved the error console message if you need to see it. Thanks!

Add-ons can sometimes cause odd behavior in the Firefox UI. If you have any installed, you can try disabling them and seeing if this resolves your issue. You can do so from Tools > Add-ons.
