I can not get imac w/Snow Leopard's address book to sync with ipad 1correctly? I only get about half the contacts?

I have tried repeatedly to get my address book on my imac w/ snow leopard to sync to my ipad 1 correctly and have failed every time. I only get about 1/3 the number of contacts and they don't all even correlate with the ones on the imac. Like one will have full middle name and the other only the initial. I don't know where itunes is getting these contacts but doesn't match those in my address book. I keep telling itunes to replace the contacts on the ipad with those on my mac but it doesnt work. Can't do it with icloud cause snow leopard doesn't support, it still wants to use the non existant mobile me format. Hope someone can help. I added the all amnually once before but they screwed up when I sync each time.

Thanks for your response Ernie. You are correct in that whenever you type a series of letters, Address Book (as it always has) finds every single thing with that combination of letters - Names, businesses, adjectives, people's dogs' names, letters in product serial numbers, etc. This is useful for finding a subject on the Web, or finding all documents related to 'iPhoto' on your Mac, etc., but not useful, quick or convenient when trying to find one person to call in your Address Book (which is what people use Address Book for).
What is DIFFERENT in the Snow Leopard version, is that the ability to type one letter to instantly go to last names with that letter has been removed. Previously, you could easily find 'Bill Tilman' in one second by simply typing 'T'. Now you get every word that starts with T and all the words in the card that have a T in them. If you type out a full name like 'Bill', it finds every person named Bill. No one would ever want to find all their contacts named Bill to call them. You could type out the full last name 'Tilman', but there again you are forced to type out a complete name to do a search. It would actually be quicker to scroll down and find it manually. The ability to type a single letter to find the last name (or business name) of a contact you needed to call, was much quicker and easier than having to type out the entire name.

    Hi kimcinma!
    Your previous purchases are saved on iCloud even if you bought them on another computer. If you can't find them on your current computer, you might need to unhide them. Go to iTunes preferences, and click on Store Preferences. Then click the box for "show iTunes in the Cloud purchases". Then click on OK, and everything you've ever bought from iTunes on that Apple ID will show up in your library. You will need to download them from iCloud first before you can synch them to your iPod Classic. To do this, click on the little cloud with the arrow in it next to your song, and it will download to your computer. When you have the music that you want downloaded, plug in your iPod and synch away. Hope this helps!

    You won't see anything obviously related to iCloud, Jimmy. But if you go to the home iTunes Store page while logged into your iTunes Store account, you should see a Purchases link now under the Quick Links header. That's the only part of iCloud active at this time.

  • Snow Leopard's Address Book now Requires Full Name to find a Contact

    In all previous versions of Address Book, the user could simply type 'T' to instantly go to contacts with last names that start with 'T' (and businesses that start with 'T').
    In Snow Leopard, Address Book can no longer search with one letter the way it did before; it uses a 'Spotlight' type of search where the user must type the full name in order to get an exact match. This type of searching is useful for finding documents on the Mac or searching the Internet, but is totally inefficient for finding contacts in Address Book.
    It sounds like someone at Apple decided this was a better way to search for contacts, because this change in search method is described in the new Address Book 'Help' file; it says, "As you type, Address Book begins to search all the information on the cards, including notes, and displays matching contacts, with the matching text highlighted in each card." For example, let's say someone used to type 'T' to search for a contact named Bill Tilman. Now what happens is that Address Book stops at the first person who's first name starts with 'T', and highlights all the T's in the person's card (the T in 'telephone', the T in 'Street', etc. The user must now scroll through all their contacts manually to find Bill Tilman, or else manually type out the complete name 'Bill Tilman'. (If they just type 'Bill', they will only get the first person named Bill.)
    I hope Apple will reconsider and will allow Address Book to do the quick one-letter searches by last name (as opposed to 'Sort' by last name, which it still has) like it used to. (Or at least make this a choice in Address Book Preferences.) This would also be more compatible with the way iPhone searches for contacts; when you select a letter in the iPhone's contacts, it finds contacts who's last name starts with that letter, as well as businesses, just like Address Book always used to.

    Thanks for your response Ernie. • Snow Leopard Mail Address Book does no longer sort names

    Hi,
    I noticed that, after I installed Snow Leopard, the address book I access in Mail does no longer show entries sorted by last names although I set the the address book I access from the dock to do so and it works fine. I thought they're one and the same. How come there is this discrepancy and is there a way to resolve the issue?
    Best
    Frank

    Frank,
    The Address Book application opened from the Dock responds to its preference setting for this sort. Quit Mail, and then confirm the sort you want to see in the AB application -- you can choose not only Last Name sort, but whether Last Name appears before First Name, as I am sure you know.
    Now relaunch Mail, and when you access from Mail it should now have the same sort you selected in the AB app. Mail is apparently picking up the preference setting in the AB app at the time it launches, and does not change that until you have quit Mail, and then next relaunch it.

  • Mimic Snow Leopard's Address Book Server

    Is there a way to mimic the functionality of Snow Leopard's upcoming Address Book Server? We recently acquired an Xserve and before the rumors of 10.6 even started up, one of our desired features from Leopard Server was a sort of synchronizing Address Book "server" for our users. Is there any way we could achieve this now? I'm okay with doing some manual set up on each user's (less than 20) computer, and/or a third-party server on the Xserve that could somehow act as the Address Book server.
    LDAP and OD are new to us, and we currently aren't using OD to authenticate our users. The desired effect of this is not that our address books for each employee is the same, but that we can sync our address information of all of our clients and such. With the LDAP section of the Address Book.app preferences and the availability of OS X Server, is there anything we can do to achieve Address Book Server functionality today?

    There's this:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/27004/address-book-server
    I have no experience with it, so I can't make a recommendation.

  • Snow Leopard, Mail & Address Book

    The Mail program’s address book used to be able to access the main *Address Book* application by control-clicking on a contact name when in the Mail program. Now the +contextual menu+ doesn’t even come up when control-clicked.
    How can I access the main *Address Book* application from Mail (without having to launch it from the Dock )?
    This was such a great convenient feature before. Why is it missing now?

  • How can I point my iPhones to a specific address book for syncing?

    I only want contacts on my iPhones that have phone numbers and not email addresses.
    After creating a iPhone address book, how do I point iTunes to that book instead of the regular Contacts book?
    Have been able to do that in the past, but cannot do so running OSX 10.8 or 10.8.2.

    You'll have to use Wi-Fi to sync, Bluetooth is not supported:
    You can use iPhone with the Apple Wireless Keyboard and other Bluetooth devices, such as Bluetooth headsets, car kits, and stereo headphones. Third-party Bluetooth headphones may support volume and playback controls. See the documentation that came with your Bluetooth device. For supported Bluetooth profiles, go to support.apple.com/kb/HT3647
    From the manual: iphone_user_guide 5 page 109
    Use iCloud to keep Contacts up to date on your iOS devices and computers
    Go to Settings > iCloud, then turn on Contacts. See “iCloud” on page 17.

  • Address book wont sync with imac

    Hi, Just picked up a new 3GS for the wife.  The iStore transfered her contacts from her old Sony phone.  Problem is when we try to access a contact on the phone it just closes that app and returns to the home screen.
    I tried to sync it with our iMac via iTunes but it fails at the last stage and states that the address book is in use on the iPhone, also saying that the contacts must be closed (on the iPhone) and then try again.
    I'm stumped. Any help would be great as I dont want to drive to our nearest iStore in B'ham to get it sorted.
    Cheers, Jon

    Also, just been playing, when I go in through settings to Mail, Contacts, Calendars the phone again just returns to the home screen.

  • HowI get Address Book Server sync with clients?

    I have just set up Lion Server on a macmini and am learning how to set it up.  I cannot get address Book server to sync with client accounts.
    The server is function is active.  The users are properly set up, and the clients have been connected to the server and a Mac OSX Server Address Book created.  I have also set up the address book on the Mac Mini with an OSX Server addresss book.  It should show the same entries as the client and sync wherever changes are made.  Not a sausage....nothing......  The little 'wheel' whizzes round and does......... you have got it........ nothing.
    I thought this was easy to use?
    Any help would be welcome.

    Hi,
    Yes the sync tool is a standalone utility (you don't need the outlook connector installed). I finally got around to installing/configuring the latest version (comm-suite-5 sync tool) against my 2005Q4 test install.
    The addressbook server is the UWC address as I mentioned before but you also need to include the /uwc on the end.
    So for my system I have the following setting:
    local.sso.uwc.verifyurl = http://test-system.sun.com:82/uwc/VerifySSO?
    This maps to a :
    => Address Book Server: test-system.sun.com/uwc
    => Port: 82
    So in your case it would be:
    local.sso.uwc.verifyurl = http://hostname:6788/uwc/VerifySSO?
    => Address Book Server: hostname/uwc
    => Port: 6788
    Regards,
    Shane.
