Import XML data to textfields in a PDF file

Can I use LiveCycle Designer 8.2 to auto populate textfields in a PDF-file with data from a XML-file when the user opens the PDF-file? If so, how will I do it? Is there any guide?
It works fine in the Livecycle Designer preview but when I open the PDF-file all textfields are empty. It also works fine if I import data from a OLEDB-connection.

I'm looking for a solution for the same thing. I have a pdf form with fields bound to an xml file, but Acrobat will only import the data manually (Forms / Manage Form Data / Import Data) and Reader doesn't work at all.
Tech Support says that when in Livecycle, you're working in an xml environment, so the 'Preview PDF' works. Acrobat and Reader aren't xml environments, so they won't display the data.
What we need is a javascript programmer who can figure this out. Possibly using the remerge function. Anyone???

Importing XML Data into a Reader Extended PDF

I'm using designer 9 to create a PDF that will import an XML document on initialization and will use that document to populated multiple dependent dropdown lists.
That's working fine in preview when I use xfa.datasets.data.mydataset to access the XML document and proceed to manipulate the XML with e4x.
Now I have the form working correctly in designer preview and I want to reader extend the form and configure the data connection to access the XML file dynamically instead of using the preview data.
I've tried a few methods of accessing the data via a reader extended form and they have all failed.
I've tried to call importData("local filename") and access the XML file that way. That appears to fail silently.
I've also tried to embed the XML in a hidden form field and the XML document length apparently exceeds the max character limit so I can't do that.
So how can I import the XML document on form initialization either through a) importing the data(ideally through a web URL) or b) embedding the XML document directly in the form somewhere? Thanks.

Can't import XML data into my databse-connected PDF form

Excellent forum, and thanks for all the revealing insights so far viewed, however one question.I'm using a PDF form to collect info via email in the format of XML datafiles. I also have an identical PDF which has database connectivity and that works fine. It was suggested on this forum that I could then import the XML data into my Database via the DB-connected PDF, in effect a user form and one with DB connectivity. Now, I've checked the data types and they all match, but when I import XML file, it creates a blank record in the database and none of the information is carried through. Please could someone offer guidance on what I'm doing wrong, I've been trying to figure this out for a week now?

Using importdata to import xml data into dynamic PDF form

Hi again,
Me and my colleagues have a problem using the importData service to import some xml data into an empty PDF form (represented as an XFA input variable).
In the server log I get the error that Only XDP data is supported for XFA forms, however I only have the xml data and not the entire xdp available.
Is this really not possible to to (like importing xml data to a form is possible in the Designer when creating forms).
I hope the scenario is understandable

Hi again, I have been experimenting a little with both the renderPDFForm and importData services. However I don't seem to be ble to make them work as I need them to. My scenario is simple, I have one (call it a template xdp/PDF form) and lots of data in xml files (around 1000), that I need to import into the template. Therefore I have set up a "Watched Folder" to take the xml as a document (I guess this is a requirement) and then I need either the renderPDF or importData services to import the xml data into the template. I need help for importing xml data file in the pdf form. When I write some thing in the text field with fill color and typeface (font) and exported xml data using email button. When I imported that xml file in the same pdf file that is used for exporting the xml data then all the data are shown in the control but not color and font typeface. Anyone has suggestion for solving this problem. Please help me for solving this problem.

I want to import a MS Word Index into a .pdf file using Adobe Pro. It is for a book. The book has been converted to a .pdf for printing, but it needs an Index for the last page of the book. I tried to embed a new index (starting from scratch but no luck. Any suggestions? Thank you for your time.

Now I want to search this "myArrayStrings.get(r)" in another file. How to do that?Store the returned String. Do the same thing you did to read the first file to read the second file (i.e. read it in line-by-line and store the lines in a list). Then check if that list contains the String you stored from the first list.
E.g. (using your code):

Database automatically imports xml data into pdf - issues

Hi Guys,
I have another important question. I have LCD 8.0 where I created a pdf form.
An Access database should pull information from the XML and import automatically into the pdf file without human interaction.
The code I am using for importing (which is on the form docready event is: xfa.host.importData("data.xml"); -- but the information is not being automatically filled in, is there a particular syntax for the path? or is there another way to accomplish this?

Are you getting any error messages (check the javascript console - ctrl-j in Acrobat). Did you bind the fields to the inbound XML structure? Look at the Object palette and choose the Binding tab. Have a look at the Data Binding field - is there anything set there?

Import xml data from a variable locations

Hi,
Could some please help me with a solution?
Here's what currently runs on our server. An applications runs and does:
Create an unique folder
Copy a fillable, reader extended form into this folder
Put data in a XML-file (always same filename) and places that in the same folder
Open the PDF for the user to fill in the details.
Now, the change I want to make is to import the data from the XML file into the PDF. I used a button on the form using xfa.host.importData(). This fires up a browse-for-file-box so the user can select the correct xml-file. This works!
However, as the folder from where the PDF opens, is always a different one, the browse-for-file-box opens in the wrong folder. The user does see a XML-file, but that is from a different folder. So, what I wanted is the following:
The form opens
The PDF imports the data from the XML file automaticly, without user intervention
The user finalizes the form and saves it.
In short: How can I create a variable from the folderlocation where the pdf is opened, and merge that with the xml-filename?
Hopefully I than can use xfa.host.importData("filename.xml")

thanks for your responce. It sure was helpfull to have a look at that discussion. However, that article regards a defined source with a fixed path (xfa.host.importData("/c/path/to/xml/file.xml");)
There is my problem. I need to determine the path first since that changes every time. Then I want to import that file using code.

By the way, I also tried opening the same pdf from different folders. Adobe Reader seems to remember where it looked previous for a XML-file. So,if there is a way to set the folder where the browse-for-file-box opens with, that would be great too!

Import XML data

I have a document I created with MS Word, and then converted to a pdf. After it was converted I opened the pdf with LiveCycle, then added radio buttons, text boxes, and an email button. When the forms are filled out they are sent, using the email button. When I receive the form they are in an XML format, how do I open the completed forms with either Livecycle or Acrobat?

You will have to either use Livecycle Forms to render the PDF with the data sent from email, or open the PDF in acrobat and import the data into the PDF from the Forms|Manage Forms Data|Import Data

XML Data is not displaying in pdf

I'm trying to setup a pdf file that will have data imported from an xml file. We have a small web app that generates the xml file from a SQL database. The xml is placed inside a folder on our web server. I placed my pdf inside that folder with the xml. I setup the data connection and I generated the fields. I saved and tested the pdf, but the fields will not populate into the form. I've checked the xml and it seems to be in working order. My file path is ".\Test.xml". I tried using a URL, but it doesn't seem to find it. Could this be my problem?
Any comments would be appreciated.

Are you using the free version of Adobe Reader to view the form? If so, data import isn't available without LiveCycle Forms ES or Reader Extensions ES.
If you're using Acrobat Pro to view the forms, then the above doesn't apply, and I can't offer any advice to help.

Adobe Reader importing XML data using command line reference

Financial Gonverment in Poland prepared new VAT declarations, which are protected from changing.
Restrictions summary is as follows: Printing, Commenting, Filling of form fields: Allowed; other restrictions are not allowed.
I am able to export xml data, using Acrobat Reader, change it to have desired data and than import it and everything works fine. In ERP program I need to fill this document with data from the system. Normally we were doing this using FDF printing channel, but for this document it shows an error with bad user password. We were talking with people from government and only answer was that it is not possible to change document restrictions... We find out the way to create xml document, but we want it now to open from the command line (UNIX commands). But we only find the way to open pdf file with specified fdf file... But when I'm trying to open PDF document with specified fdf URL (url is linked to xml file... i don't know if it is proper... if not than how to create fdf file with desired xml?)
Is there any possible to open a pdf with specified xml url to load to that PDF?

Split imported XML data into multiple text fields

I should first describe my final project because it is very possible that I am going about this entirely wrong!
I am trying to create an interactive PDF file which is the floor plan of our office, when you mouse over the office spaces it would popup the info for the person in that office, in fact when you click on the office space it would show additional info like computer MAC and jack numbers
I placed the floor plan as a layer and them created a second layer with no fill/no stroke rectangles over the offices and made them buttons (office01, office02)
I then made text fields with the info for the people, one for regular info and one for extra info (office01-data, office01-Xdata) I made these text fields buttons as well and had them "hidden until triggered"
These info fields are all on top of one another, as in the are all the same size and in teh same location
Then I went to the office buttons and created events "On Roll Over" "Show/Hide Buttons and Forms" and changed the visibility of the corresponding info button.
This works like a charm!
I hope I am clear up to this point.... my problem now is I would like to import this data both regular and extra from an excel spreadsheet or an XML file.
That way when we get new staff or people move offices or whatever I can update the spreadsheet or XML file, rerun my InDesign file and create a new interactive PDF

Reopen and import the XML data again... and it brings it all into the text field... wonderful and useful but not what I need.
Is it possible to import the XML data into separate test fields, or into some other separate field that I can make into a button and show/hide?
I may end up just entering all the data directly into InDesign as I know this will work, it just does not seem like the right way to do it.

Import xml data in Access when multiple rows use the same fieldname

First of all sorry for my english :-) I have a LiveCycle Designer ES form with multiple rows that I send via e-mail as XML data.
example:
Row 1
Firstname: John Lastname: Dow
Row 2
Firstname: Steve Lastname: Austin
The exported XML is OK but when I want to import it into my Access database, only one row is imported. I pretty sure that the problem comes from the fact that may exported XML use the same fieldname (what is important if I want to import data in the correct Access field) but I don't know what to do to be able to import all the rows of the same Form.
Any idea?

Hi Viktor,
In case of order recognition rules you should increase the relevancy in the newer version of the cartridge so appropriate ORR will be triggered. In other xqueries, you can try using new namespace as a model variable for each and every version of the cartridge
