Is it possible to virtually bypass the battery on a macbook pro (retina 2014) and power the mac directly via AC power?
E.g. Dell allows you to plug the laptop into AC power but prevent battery charging.
Note: I do not want to physically remove the battery.
If there isn't an option on Mac OS, is there anything I can download to bypass the battery when I want?

Thanks for linking me! Wow I had no idea the clock speed would be cut so severely! What a bunch of rubbish, as if the AC won't provide enough power!
I guess the only solution to my question would be an app which virtually disconnects the battery but tricks the mac into thinking the battery is still connected. I'm just surprised Apple haven't yet started to build prisons for the government - considering how well they lock up their software and hardware!

Batteries will vary in how long they last. Apple will say that for machines built in the last 4 years that the battery may last up to 5 years approximately. However this depends on usage.
You can have someone who never ever uses the battery and only ever runs the computer from the mains and the battery will fail as it never gets used and the cycle count will be very low.
To put things in perspective. I have a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina Display (Late 2013). I've had it for probably 8 months and I have 128 cycles on my battery, approx. half yours in a quarter of the time. So if you're not always use the battery it can be affected in other ways.
You can try to see if calibrating the battery helps. Look at http://apple.com/batteries for information on how to do this or try an SMC Reset and see if these make a difference. If not, then seek support from an Apple Store or Authorised service provider.
    Hope this makes sense.

The battery for my macbook pro 13 says "service battery".  Now I want to get a replacement but the reviews for it are horrible! Does anybody have any suggestions? I don't want to spend 130 dollars on something I'm going to have to replace in less than a year (which is what normally I been reading)  I do design work and I take my mac everywhere.  Having to always look for a plug or having to be constantly plugged in doesn't sound ideal to me.  Please help me. what should I do???

Why does it matter if it a scam????? I'll let you figure that out by yourself.  If I'm going to replace it, why should I be contempt with a battery that I have to replace within months (as stated by some people in the comments). The issue here is not if I should or not replace it OBVIOUSLY I'm going to have to before it starts going crazy.  The underlying issue is why is the replacement battery for a lack of better words " a bit crap."  It comes with a 3 month guarantee?? Is that a joke?!??!?! Some people complained it malfunction after only 8- 9 months? I'm sorry but as an Apple fan I think it's absolutely rubbish. I know there is no magic cure I'm just hoping someone shines the light on how crappy this replacement is.

Guys, i am actually trying using a solution provided by the article shared by dominic23,
It says "Another option is to get an ionizer to help the atmosphere in the workplace be more conductive and pull charges away from contact surfaces, including yourself."
So in my home, we have such device that could clean the air using ion, and i am using it in my room...
Result: BANG!!! The electric shock on my macbook has gone!! I don't really care about physics but somehow it works! You guys should give it a try.
    Thanks again dominic23

  • How do i know if I need to replace the battery in my MacBook Pro?

How do i know if I need to replace the battery in my MacBook Pro?

There are a few ways (none of which are covered in the above link). On more recent OS X versions, when you click the battery icon in the menu bar you may see a "Service Battery" or "Replace Now" message. If you aren't seeing that, the system probably thinks the battery is fine.
Also, in your System Information utility, there is a Power section that provides Health information for the battery, with a Condition status and Cycle Count. If the Condition is Normal and your battery is under 300 cycles (for removable batteries) or 1000 cycles (for non-removable batteries) it is not time to replace it yet.
But of course, the other time to replace it is if you don't think you're getting the runtime you want out of it.
If none of those is a problem, don't worry about it.

My brand new MacBook Pro retina display not charging the battery any more after 3 weeks...no green or red Led. Any one now about this problem? Thanks

Either the power brick is damaged, or the charging circuit is on the blink, or both. Either way, a trip to the Apple Store or the Apple Authorized Service Provider is in order, as this ain't no bargain basement toy.
In the meantime, can attempt an SMC Reset to see if it helps.

Basically only for the first year and only if Apple deems it defective. It is seen as a consumable item and not covered under Applecare.

However mine skips this completely and just turns off. WHY? does this mean the battery is bad?
Resetting the PRAM (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html) fixed the problem in my case. then i did the calibrate the battery again this time it went to sleep not shut down i did this 3 more times why?

  • Battery Life on MacBook Pro Retina 15" purchased 1 week ago

    Hello Dear Community,
About a month ago I purchased a MacBook Pro Retina 15" and after 1 week I noticed the battery was lasting for about 2-3 hours of web-browsing. It turned out the battery was defective and Apple sent me a new one.
4 days ago I received the new laptop and I switched it on, did all the updates and installed Google Chrome.
Here is my problem (or maybe I'm just being a bit paranoid):
The battery was at 80% when I put on a movie. I was with standard out of the box settings, full brightness and volume at max. After the 2-hours movie battery was down do 21% which seemed a bit odd, but I thought it was expected with full brightness and volume.
After that I was web-browsing ordering a pizza, went on facebook and watched 4 movie trailers which all and all took about 25 minutes maybe, but this got the battery down do 10%.
Is this normal, because this is my first purchase of an apple product? Somehow losing 10% in 25 minutes seems a far cry from the promised 8 hours of web-browsing promised in the description.
Very much appreciate any help with this!
P.S: Apple Diagnostics found no issues.
    Regards,
    Incr3dulous

I have 1 question though: Isn't it harmful for the battery to keep the MBP connected to AC with the charger at full battery?
    NO, NO NO!
I keep my MBP connected to the charger most of the time.  Monthly I will use it with just the battery and connect the charger again when at the 40%± charge level.  That will keep the battery happy.
P.S: How much do you usually get out of your MBP while browsing?
Which one?  I have three of them.  The 2010 is the most energy efficient and I would expect it to last perhaps 6+ hours with very moderate use.  The 2006 has a smaller replaceable battery and I would expect 4.5 maximum at very moderate use.
Watch a video and the times will be cut in half.
    Ciao.

  • My macbook pro retina 2014 has crashed for the 2nd time in 2 mo

My macbook pro retina 2014 has crashed for the 2nd time in 2 months. Can't get past the gray/apple screen.  The first time the genius bar tried all the different tricks to get it to boot all the way through, but in the end had to reinstall mavericks.  They said there weren't any indications of it being a hardware issue after running diagnostics.  The only possible reason is that it has something to do with some ProTools 10 plugins which I had downloaded in both occasions less than a week before.  I don't believe that would be the issue and I'm guessing it's a hardware issue at this point.  It's still under a factory warranty, so I'm not too concerned.  Thoughts?

    Try SMC and PRAM resets:

    http://web.archive.org/web/20140711222006/http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
If no success, try booting into the recovery partition and select Disk Utility from the 4 option menu.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair.
    Any Change?
    Ciao.

I have a MS Office for Mac CD, how do I install the software onto my MacBook Pro (Retina Display)? It does not have a CD drive.

If all else fails, try this.  i used to do it all the time before. might or might not work with the new office.
if you have access to another computer with a cd/dvd rom, copy the entire contents of the cd on a thumb drive.
insert the thumb drive in your MB and do the install from there.
However, if you have the newer version of MS Office, Bandit's suggestion is much better.
