Java.lang.OutOfMemoryError - reasons

Hi
My application is throwing
Wed Mar 26 15:07:12 PST 2003:<E> <ServletContext-General> Servlet failed with
Exception
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
<<no stack trace available>>
Wed Mar 26 15:07:12 PST 2003:<E> <Kernel> ExecuteRequest failed.
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
<<no stack trace available>>
exception and hangs. At the time of this exception, my verbosegc shows
[GC 198159K->168522K(523136K), 0.0737788 secs]
So, it means I have enough JVM memory to run my application (correct me if I am
wrong). Then what could be reason for my application to throw OutOfMemory exception.
I though that my application is having some memory leak and thats why whenever
Full GC happens, its not freeing up JVM memory. But now I found that, when GC
or Full GC happens, it releases lot of memory back.
Please help me
Thanks
V Prakash

Thank you.
I am going to go with newSize and MaxnewSize=64m initially. Lets see.

V PrakashTune your heap. Start the server with the following:
-Xms=512m -Xmx:512m -XX:PermSize=32m -verbose:gc -XX:NewSize=128m -XX:MaxNew
Size=128m
Then observe GC collections and see if it fails.

    Hi
Out of memory they can result from different causes:
    - The application is consuming too many resources inappropriately
    - The application is opening and not enough threads are closing, leaving no space for the JVM
    - You lose the connection with database, causing the connection pool is saturated, which makes the memory of the container is depleted and reaches its peak.
    - The container does not have sufficient resources or is not tuned to meet the load generated. But would recommend to discard the above before using this option, because when using this option could work around the problem but could not really be attacking the cause.
    bye

  • Weblogic Server -- java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

    This is our production environment.
We have deployed a Integration Application (EAR) on weblogic integration server. this is running in single server instance.there is no clustering (we have limitation from connection system to WLI)
We get java.lang.OutOfMemoryError for every fortnight.
we have allocated 2GB memory to the server using startup script.unix server has 8GB memory.
automatic garbage collection happens properly for some days (for a week) .. We mean memory usage is between 1GB to 2GB .
We would like to know what is the reason for getting java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
    Thanks & Regards
    WLI team

    I am working in weblogic.
whenever the power goes off ,the server is not gets starting ,it says
    java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
    <<no stack trace available>>
    the domain is not working,
so i am creating a new domain, and i am working.
pls. tell me how to rectify this problem
    thanks in advance

My frien google tells me that you use
    >
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
    This can have two reasons:
    * Your Java application has a memory leak. There are tools like YourKit Java Profiler that help you to identify such leaks.
    * Your Java application really needs a lot of memory (more than 128 MB by default!). In this case the Java heap size can be increased using the following runtime parameters:
    java -Xms<initial heap size> -Xmx<maximum heap size>

  • Server startup - java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space

    Version: WebLogic Server 10.3.2.0
    JVM Sun 6 64
    OS Windows Server 2008 64
    Hi there,
I got the following error from a managed server startup. The AdminManager e NodeManager instances are up and runnig and the startup comand is performed from the web gui.
I tried to play with JVM arguments (web gui, not on script) increasing the amount to -Xms512m -Xmx1024m, but with not success and because the instance hasn't got any application deployed I felt reasonable put them back to -Xms512m -Xmx512m.

    Hi,
As you have mentioned that you tried to play with JVM arguments (web gui, not on script) increasing the amount to -Xms512m -Xmx1024m.....
In case of OutOfMemoryError in PermGen Sapace ...increasing only the Heap Size will not solve anything...
    Just a Bit Explaination:
    Formula:
(OS Level)Process Size = Java Heap Native Space (2-3% OS related Memory)
PermSize : It's a Native Memory Area Outside of the Heap, Where ClassLoading kind of things happens.... In an operating System like Windows Default Process Size is 2GB (2048MB) default (It doesnt matter How much RAM do u have 2GB or 4GB or more)...until we dont change it by setting OS level parameter to increase the process size..Usually in OS like Solaris/Linux we get 4GB process size as well.
Now Lets take the default Process Size=2GB (Windows), Now if you have set the -Xmx512M, we can assume that rest of the memory 1536 Mb is available for Native codes.
(ProcessSize (-) HeapSize) = Native (+) (2-3% OS related Memory)
    2048 MB (-) 512 MB = 1536 MB
    THUMB RULES:
MaxPermSize = (Xmx/3) ---- Very Special Cases (One Third of maximum Heap Size)
MaxPermSize = (Xmx/4) ---- Recommended (One Fourth Of maximum Heap Size)
So finally you need to increase the PermGen Size... like -Xmx1024m -Xms1024m -XX:MaxPermSize256m
But again these are not the Final values ... It depends on ther Environments
    Thanks

  • Diagnosing java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space

I am getting this error on our test instance:
Exception in thread "Thread-96425" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space
    (We are using JDK 1.5.0_03)
What tools can I use to inspect the contents of PermGen? In particular, is there a way to see all the interned String objects?
I tried jmap -permstat, but it only shows perm gen usage based on classloader. I wasn't sure how to check the intern Strings.
    Thanks
    Sam

    Hi All,
We just to add few things before i go into deep as to what is the root cause that might cause Out Of Memory due to Permanant Generation.
Well recently i had faced this issue in one of the biggest application used in UK.I faced this issue and the resoultion for this took to almost 3 months. Now the issue is resolved. The reason for this was in the application itself.
Well to diagnose this, please add the following parameter into the JVM Options of the instance you are using it.DON'T use parallelGC.
    -verbose:gc
    -XX:+PrintClassHistogram
    -XX:+PrintGCDetails
After this JVM options are added, restart you instance and then check the server.log file. You will see lots of classes. Please do a analysis of this classes. You will observe that some of the classes keeps on growing even after the FULLGC is done.It means that there is some problem you need to check either at the application layer as to which classes are creating this problem.Normally classes or sometimes API's being used by the application can caused PermGen issue.
Well String.intern method normally being used by XML api's .
Please drop me a mail for any further information you require. My id is

    Dear Pavan,
In this scenerio there is issue in PERMGEN space which is the reason it is throwing outOFMemory exception.
Increase the size of PERMGEN space in setDomainEnv.cmd.
    set MEM_MAX_PERM_SIZE=-XX:MaxPermSize=128m
Increase the size of this parameter to this:
    MEM_MAX_PERM_SIZE="-XX:MaxPermSize=256m"

You are trying to receive a Datagram with an enormous byte array. The maximum size of a UDP datagram is 65535-28=65507 bytes, and the maximum practical size is 534 bytes.
Best practice with UDP is to use a byte array one larger than the largest expected datagram, so you can detect truncations: if the size of the received datagram = the size of the byte array, you received an unexpectedly large message and it has probably been truncated.

I am Trying to read one TEXT file line by line. file size is approx. 7 MB or it contain approx. 35000 line of text.

mean while after some line i get error like below,
    java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
    After this error process stop.
my application is in Java Swing and i m using java 1.5 version of SDK and JRE.
is it a JDK version Problem?
please can any one give me appropriate solutions for this.
    give me answer please.............

Are you able to post the code you use to read the file? Initially, I'd guess that you're stuck in a loop. Make sure you're getting out of all your loops. You can do this with breakpoints in your IDE's debugger, or by putting a println right after the loop.
It may also be that your IDE isn't allotted enough of your system's memory, though I doubt that is the case. You can easily google how to increase the memory allotted to the IDE.
For some reason, garbage collection isn't happening as you're expecting. Make sure you're not holding on to huge stuff any longer than you need to.

I have not tried generating the text file. I will try this scenario as well.
Actually, I wanted to understand the root cause of this issue. I am using 4 sqlunloads tools in a package, all of which are generating csv reports from similar kind of tables with similar number of records. 3 of the sqlunloads are executing successfully, only the last 1 is failing with the above issue.
We also checked the ODI server folder size, it is 1 GB. So I still not very sure what is the root cause.
    Any suggestion is appreciated.

  • What caused the "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError (no stack trace available)"?

We just met another problem: after I modified the BDM file on TUXEDO and bdmconfig.xml
file on WEBLOGIC (with no ACL or authentication setup on both side), when I booted
up the WebLogic 6.1 server, the ULOG file of Tuxedo says that the connection has

    Hi,
I am getting same OutofMemoryError. I could not understand change in bdmconfig.xml
    removed the outofmemory error.
what is bdmconfig.xml file and you specified port#?

    Bob,
Another expert in our company told me that we should use a different
    PORT# (kind
of DUMMY port) in the bdmconfig.xml file on WebLogic side, instead of
    the real WebLogic
instance PORT#. We tried and the OutOfMemoryError disappeared, and the
    WTC connection
works OK. We don't know why should we do this, maybe it is a bug or some
    hardware
    requirement.
Anyway, thank you very much for your help and quick respondse!

Check the logs to see if the out of memory is the only execption orif
it is the last exception. It could be that there is something happening
earlier on that you are missing.
There are also other JVM problems that can arise besides the heap
size. The Hotspot VM had an issue where you needed to set a maximum
permanent generation size( helps garbage collection tuning I think).
(-XX:MaxPermSize=32m for jdk130,64m for jdk131). It comes into
play when you are loading many classes.

From the WTC document and Tuxedo document, it says that if MTYPE is
    not

the default is to turn ENCODING/DECODING on. Do you see any other
    possibilities?

    Bob Finan <[email protected]> wrote:
    Bill,
One possible reason is if MTYPE is set, in the DMCONFIG on the
Tuxedo side, as part of your remote domain definitions of the WTC
domain. This should not be set or set it to NULL. This problem occurs
because encoding/decoding is always needed between java and non-java
    domains.

  • WEBLOGIC - java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

    hi,
i am using Weblogic 10.3 in production mode
We are getting error " java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space " frequently , and
we are using the default args
    JAVA Memory arguments: -Xms256m -Xmx512m  -XX:MaxPermSize=512m
    OS - > Windows Server 2003
    please help
    Regards
    Jeethi George

    Hi George,
The Setting you have provided is wrong ...that is the reason you are getting OutOfMemory in Heap.
Your Setting is (As you have mentioned in your very first post): JAVA Memory arguments: -Xms256m -Xmx512m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m
    Just a Bit Explaination:
    Formula:
    (OS Level)Process Size = [ Java Heap   (+)   Native Space (+) (2-3% OS related Memory) ]
PermSize : It's a Netive Memory Area Outside of the Heap, Where ClassLoading kind of things happens.
Now Lets take the default Process Size=2GB (Windows), Now As you have set the -Xmx512M, we can assume that rest of the memory 1536 Mb is available for Native codes.
(ProcessSize - HeapSize) = [Native (+)  (2-3% OS related Memory)]
    2048 MB - 512 MB = 1536 MB
    THUMB RULES:+
MaxPermSize = (MaxHeapSize/3) ----Very Special Cases
    MaxPermSize = (MaxHeapSize/4) ----Recommended
In your Case -Xmx and -XX:MaxPermSize bith are same ....That is the reason you are getting the OutOfMemory Error in Heap.
We should increase/tune the MaxPermSize when we deploy a very large application (like a WebApplication which uses many JSPs, or PageFlows/Portal framework etc.) in our Server.
What should be the exact setting of these parameters depends on the Environment /Applications etc...
    But Just try -Xmx1024m   -Xms1024m  -XX:MaxPermSize256m
Another recommendation for fine tuning always keep (Xmx MaxHeapSize & Xms InitialHeapSize same).
    Thanks

java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: heap space means VM heap space is not enough for your program. The default VM opts is very small, maybe not suit to your program.
So you can extend your program's VM, using opts. If your program is J2SE, some like use java xxx.class, you can insert opts into command. If your program is J2EE, your can extend your container VM opts.
The opts are the same, insert or change the opts such as "-Xms256m -Xmx1024m" to your program.(The number is suit to your computer).
Note: The Xms is initial Java heap size. The Xmx is maximum Java heap size.

  • Re: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

    Hi.
Probably 1 of the following possibilities:
    1. WLS + your application is using up all of your defined heap space, and occasionally uses requires more than
    you have allocated.
    2. You have a memory leak.
Try increasing your java heap size in your start script. If the problem goes away then number 1 above was
most likely the problem. If the problem is merely delayed then you have a memory leak. You should use a
profiler such as JProbe or OptimizeIt to track down the offending class or classes. If they are WLS classes
then you should open a case with support.
BTW, you can monitor server heap useage via the console - mydomain|Servers|myserver|Monitoring|Performance.
    Hope this helps,
