Low read performance from a USB 2.0 drive

I experience a terribly low read performance from a USB 2.0 hard drive on a fresh Arch Linux installation with the latest stock kernel (2.6.23.1-7). Reading 200 MB takes around 3 minutes whereas under Windows with the same controller and drive it takes around 10 seconds.
[gali@neutrino ~]$ sudo hdparm -t /dev/sdb1
/dev/sdb1:
Timing buffered disk reads: 6 MB in 4.89 seconds = 1.23 MB/sec
It's a FAT32 volume.
[gali@neutrino ~]$ cat /proc/mounts | grep sdb1
/dev/sdb1 /media/GALI_EXT vfat rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,uid=1000,gid=102,fmask=0133,dmask=0022,codepage=cp437,iocharset=utf8 0 0
The ehci_usb module is loaded and the device manifests itself as USB 2.0.
[gali@neutrino ~]$ cat /sys/bus/usb/devices/7-1/speed
480
[gali@neutrino ~]$ sudo lsusb -v -s 007:

Another interesting thing, which may or may not have anything in common with this issue, is that issuing ANY read or write operation on the drive makes JACK running a FreeBoB driver for a FireWire audio interface connected to the same USB 2.0/FireWire controller collapse. But the low read performance happens regardless of whether the JACK is running or not.
Anyone has any clue what to check? Thanks in advance.

lilsirecho wrote:Can you change to a different  usb controller?  It may be defective.
It is probably not, it works fine under Windows and it worked fine as well on another machine with older Arch Linux installation.
lilsirecho wrote:
Perhaps the current supplied by the usb controller is inadequate.
Perhaps a powered hub added if you have one will alleviate the problem....EDITED
It is an external HDD enclosure, so it is self-powered.
lilsirecho wrote:One last gasp...check /etc/mkinitcpio.conf for hooks "usb"...
Well, usb hook is not enabled, but as I don't use the drive for booting, I see no reason for it to be. The required modules (usbcore, ehci_hcd, usb_storage, ide_core) are loaded. Without them, the drive would probably not be mountable at all.
Thanks for the effort, but neither of the tips probably points to the cause.

Yes, I believe so. Please check out the NetPortal app. I don't have an iPad, but I use it on my iPod Touch to access files on my Time Capsule. It is available from the iTunes App Store.

  • Arch: Install to & run from External USB Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

I wanted to play with ArchLinux 2009.02, but replacing the existing Debian-Lenny on the laptop's HDD wasn't an option. So I experimented with installing Arch on an external USB Hard Disk Drive.
I have tried to make this "newbie-friendly", so I hope the more experienced will forgive the detail.
    Materials:
Three year old Dell Inspiron 6000
         CPU = 2.0 GHz Pentium
         RAM = 2.0 GB
         Internal HDD = 80 GB
         Internal CD/DVD R/RW
External USB HDD = Freecom FHD-2 Pro 80 GB
    Archlinux 2009.02 install CD
    Steps to install:
    1. I put the Archlinux install CD in the drive and connected the external 80 GB HDD in the USB port.
    2. When the Dell laptop was booted, I pressed F2 to enter the BIOS setup. I edited the boot sequence to the following:
         Internal CD/DVD
         External USB device
         Internal HDD
On the Dell, you can also press F12 to select the preferred boot device for that boot.
    3. I started the laptop and the Archlinux installation menu came up and I proceeded with installation following the "Official Arch Linux Install Guide" and the "Beginners Guide".
    4. Used km to change to UK keyboard layout and then began the installer script (/arch/setup). I was installing from the core CD so I skipped the network steps.
    5. HDD preparation.
This was fairly straightforward with two cautions:
         (a) Make very sure that the external HDD (sdb) is selected for the operations.
         (b) Remember to set the Bootable Flag for the first (/) partition on the HDD.
I chose 20 GB for /, 2 GB for swap and the remainder for /home.
    6. The package selection and installation was fairly straightforward.
    7. Configuration of System
This was section was straightforward with one warning:
USB had to be added to the HOOKS in the /etc/mkinitcpio.conf file!
I found this to be essential for my external USB HDD to function as a bootable device. Otherwise I got the same sorts of errors relating to unrecognisable file system types that other people have reported in the forum.
The relevant line from the end of the edited /etc/mkinitcpio.conf file is below:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata usb filesystems"
    8. Installation of GRUB was the other point where caution and/or correction was necessary.
When it asked where GRUB should be installed, I had to select sdb (my external USB HDD) and not any of the particular partitions on sdb. If the root partition sdb1 was selected then the laptop won't boot from the external USB HDD.
The GRUB /boot/grub/menu.lst as written by the installation routine specifies hd(1,0) which doesn't work when you try to reboot from the external USB HDD. When you boot Arch from the external USB HDD, as far as Arch is concerned - at that point in time - the external USB HDD is the first drive in the system. To fix this:
         (a) When the Arch boot menu comes up, press e to edit the grub entries.
         (b) Change the first line to hd(0,0)
         (c) To the end of the kernel line add rootdelay=8
         (d) Press b to boot the system with these temporary corrections.
         (e) Once your Arch system has booted, edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst to make the above changes permanent.
The relevant portion of my /boot/grub/menu.lst looks like the following:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title  Arch Linux
    root   (hd0,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/... ro rootdelay=8
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
    # (1) Arch Linux
    title  Arch Linux Fallback
    root   (hd0,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/... ro rootdelay=8
    initrd /boot/kernel26-fallback.img
    9. The laptop happily and consistently boots Arch Linux from the external USB HDD when it's plugged in before startup/booting.
Running Arch from the external USB HDD seems as quick as running Debian from the internal HDD.
So if there is a performance penalty associated with using an external USB HDD, my wife and I haven't noticed.
In summary, the three essential points to address during installation to an external USB HDD are:
Remember to set the bootable flag for the first partition.
Add USB to the HOOKS for /etc/mkinitcpio.conf file.
         Correct the /etc/grub/menu.lst file.
    I hope this is helpful.
    Ted

    Hi Rookie,
As you say, it is worth remembering the rootfstype= option for the kernel line just in case someone still has problems with GRUB after making all the other changes.
I was working with the most recent Arch 2009.2 release.
I only got messages about unrecognisable file system type when I tried booting with the "stock" or "as-installed" GRUB (before I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst). After editing /boot/grub/menu.lst to identify the drive correctly and add rootdelay, GRUB was able to do the rest and everything worked OK without any error messages.
    Best wishes,
    Ted

  • Is it possible to boot from a USB 2.0 drive?

I use CCC to clone my main drive to external drives. I have used these to boot using either Firewire 400 or Firewire 800. Will a USB 2.0 drive also work as a boot drive? Thanks.

Most of them will. If you have or are considering a Western Digital, see their list of which ones should and +should not+ boot: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1787. But note the disclaimer that they don't support it +*at all.+*

  • Will 800 MHZ Quicksilver USB port read a 2.0 USB Lacie Hard Drive?

    Hello everyone
I have an 800 MHZ Quicksilver, and was wondering if it can read (adequately), either a USB 2.0, or Fire Wire conected Lacie external Hard Drive?
I'm going to install the 1.2 Upgrade Processor:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/ST3400620AS/
But I don't think this upgrade effects the speed of the USB Ports?
I also installed a Multiport Fire Wire PCI card, but through this card, I get latency problems in regard to audio. It's not as fast as the built-in Fire Wire Port.
    Thanx

    Thanx for the tip
Do you have the same system that I have?
    Is this your card:

If so, it seems to actually make up for (adjust or boost), the system's USB speed capability
And maybe I should pick up one of these too?

  • Can't read files from Sandisk USB

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro recognizes my USB drive, but none of the files show when I open up the USB. It says 17.47 GB available out of 32 GB, but 0 files.
My sister recently borrowed the flash drive to transfer files from her PC lap top, did she format the USB so that none of the files I had are available any longer? If so, I would think that it would show the USB with full capacity available.
I ran disk utility and tried to repair the drive. It shows that there are 3,549 files on the USB, but I don't see any of them.
    Thanks,
    Gordon

    Hello,
I take it you have the Sandisk Cruzer 32GB right ?
I have had the same issue, there is possiblely two reasons why this is happening, the second reason is what happened to me : ( .
    1. You sister may have partitioned part of the drive while on the windows machine to NAS format not readable on the mac side of things.
    2. Its seems to be a common issue with Sandisk Cruzer 32GB Devices, they suddenly become unreadable by the Mac after connecting them to a windows computer,
The drive is initially designed for use with windows machines and comes preloaded with U3 backup software ( which is the cause of all the problems )
you cannot uninstall the U3 software from a mac even by reformatting the device via disk utility
it can only be uninstalled via a Windows PC, which is a pain !!!!
if the second issue sounds like you trouble let me know and i'll explain how to get it working
    thanks

  • My macbook pro won't read dvds from my external cd/dvd drive.

I have a new macbook pro 13 that I got for Christmas. I purchased a external cd/dvd usb drive so that I can watch movies on my mac since it doesn't have a dvd drive built-in. I put my dvd into the drive, and all my mac does is open a fiel that has the video and audio seperated. I tried clicking on the video file to see if I can watch it, but the computer has no software to read it, apparently. I don't know if this is a software thing or if it's my drive.

First, try one of the DVD drive cleaning kits that are available.

  • Can I boot my G4 533mhz PPC from a USB external?

My disk utility shows my hard drive to be "FAILING" in red. I have purchased a Seagate Expansion External USB Hard Drive and using SuperDuper! cloned my hard drive to the external. Side-by-side comparisons of both drives in Finder appear to show that all files were copied/cloned to the external drive.
In System Preferences/Start-up Disk the current drive OSX (10.4.11) and OS9 are given as booting options and the OS9 on the external hard drive is also an option but OSX is not an option to boot from the external new drive.
I do not have the Install Disks for OSX (10.4.11). My questions are:
1.) Is it possible to boot a PPC from a USB (2.0) drive?
2.) How can I boot in to OSX from the external drive (use the external drive as my boot-up disk)?
3.) What are my options---any advice?
    Thanks

    Hi, rossirebel -
...because the seagate drive was not given as an option under the system preferences/start-up disk, so I did not think it would work.
The choices given in System Preference's Startup Disk are governed by the perception of the OS, i.e. by how the current operating system has been coded. In that sense it is relative.
However, Startup Manager is a fully hardware-based function. It runs before any OS or other software has been loaded from any drive, and its choices are based solely on the capabilities of the machine. In that sense it is absolute.
Startup Manager is coded smart, too. If your hard drive has been partitioned and set up into more than one bootable volume, Startup Manager will offer separate icons for all of the partitions which are bootable - it views them as discrete volumes.
One negative aspect, but workable once you know the limitation - if you have more than one OS on a single volume (such as OS 9 and OSX on a dual-boot machine), it will display only the OS last booted to for that volume.

  • Boot Installation media from USB flash/Pen Drive?

    Hi there,
The hardrive on my X60 died. Died so badly that even Resue and Recovery wouldn't start yet alone Windows (even in safe mode).
I have a new hard drive and installation media en route from Lenovo (laptop was under warranty)
The problem is that the installation media is on CD/DVD and my laptop does not have an optical drive.
    So my questions are:
    1. Can the installation media be installed from a USB Pen/Flash drive? (the BIOS does support USB booting)
    2. Does anyone have experience of this or instructions?
On a side note I find it slightly irritating that even under warranty Lenovo won't supply me software/hardware that will return my laptop to its original state without the user, me, potentially having to buy an external optical drive. The warranty support chap said "you'll just need to buy an external USB optical drive" - *sighs*
    Cheers
    Lawrence

    Tnx 4 ur reply RX-8.
I bought the lappie used. It had BIOS ver. 103 when I bought it, so I upgraded to ver. 111 and it kept on booting from pen drives just fine.
A few days after I bought it, the internal HDD failed with S.M.A.R.T. ID 5, something about reallocated sectors count. I got an exact replacement for the dead HDD. When I installed it, I unplugged the lappie's battery, then plugged the battery back in before I buttoned it all up. I think THAT was the start of my USB flash pen drive boot problem.
The new HDD is fine. It passes the HGST Drive Fitness Test with long SMART test, which takes between 2 and 3 hours.
I tried the EC update. Inside the zip file was a TXT file with a link to an MSI page that has a PDF file on how to do the EC update. I had that PDF open on another machine when I did the EC update so I could follow the instructions exactly.
After an F9 on the UEFI screen to restore defaults and an F10 to save the UEFI config, I rebooted and everything seemed OK. I then used a pin to force a reset. For the second time, I unplugged the lappie and waited a few minutes for the EC memory to clear.
I still have the same problem. I can't boot from a USB flash pen drive.
I'm enclosing shots of my USB config with XHCI enabled and disabled. I tried to boot from a pen drive with both XHCI settings. No joy. Will I ever be able to boot from a USB flash pen drive again?
I should also mention that I have a portable HDD with a USB 3 interface that boots just fine on other machines but won't boot on the GS60 Ghost. The LED on the portable HDD comes on and the lappie screen just sits there with a blinking underscore cursor.

How do i read from the usb converter? I can program serial in with the visa on an old pc no problem, but this is giving me some trouble. Any advice would be appreciated thankyou.

I just ran the driver setup wizard in visa and got this error for the keyspan dongle.
That might be bad news.  My company actually assigned an engineer to buy every USB to COM converter he could find and test them all with as many apps as possible.  There were many models that were problematic.  You might need to just try another brand (or two (dozen!)).
Still, check the Device Manger or MAX just in case you get lucky...

  • Bootcamp woes, unable to boot from USB and DVD drive reads all DVDs blank

My partner and I are completely unable to install Windows using Bootcamp.  We have tried dozens of solutions on the internet.
2011 iMac (purchased in by me and my partner 2012) reads all DVDs as blank.  We have (hilariously) another Mac, an MBP, that has the same exact problem.  You'd almost think "Superdrives" eventually just stop working or something.  So obviously we can't install Bootcamp on the iMac using a DVD.
But what about a USB stick?  Well after modifying the plist file and writing a bootable Windows USB and trying to boot from that, we were greeted with the mysterious and apparently yet-unsolved "no bootable device" error.
So our iMac can't boot from USB drives or read DVDs.  We've only owned it for two years.  And this is the second Mac we've owned where the Superdrive has died.  And we don't even use DVDs more than like once a year.
But anyway, can someone tell me what we're supposed to do if we want to install Windows aside from throwing money away to buy another Superdrive that is probably going to die again in a year?  Maybe a way to make our mac boot from our USB stick?  Something?
    Thanks.

Should you have another drive with a MBR, use it to rule that issue out. Alternatively create a GPT on the flash drive and try to boot from it.
What options are there for the usb controller/boot priorities/order/options? Does the laptop recognize the usb flash when already in bios setup? Should there be any form of choosing the device to boot, use that with the flash drive in the socket, then switch it with the external drive.
