Max SGA size in 32bit OS

Hi,
I have a EBS Production Instance (12.1.1) in a 32-bit OS (RHEL4.0).
RAM: 16GB, SWAP: 8GB
Our sga size is 1.7GB
Is there any way to increase our SGA size.
Please advice.
Thanks in advance.

You can use BIG PAGES
For more info you can read the below docs:
http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/linux/LargeSGAOnLinux.php
32-bit Architecture and the hugemem Kernel
The RHEL 3/4 smp kernel can be used on systems with up to 16 GB of RAM. The hugemem kernel is required in order to use all the memory on systems that have more than 16GB of RAM up to 64GB. However, I recommend the hugemem kernel even on systems that have 8GB of RAM or more due to the potential issue of "low memory" starvation (see next section) that can happen on database systems with 8 GB of RAM. The stability you get with the hugemem kernel on larger systems outperforms the performance overhead of address space switching.
With x86 architecture the first 16MB-896MB of physical memory is known as "low memory" (ZONE_NORMAL) which is permanently mapped into kernel space. Many kernel resources must live in the low memory zone. In fact, many kernel operations can only take place in this zone. This means that the low memory area is the most performance critical zone. For example, if you run many resources intensive applications/programs and/or use large physical memory, then "low memory" can become low since more kernel structures must be allocated in this area. Low memory starvation happens when LowFree in /proc/meminfo becomes very low accompanied by a sudden spike in paging activity. To free up memory in the low memory zone, the kernel bounces buffers aggressively between low memory and high memory which becomes noticeable as paging (don't confuse it with paging to the swap partition). If the kernel is unable to free up enough memory in the low memory zone, then the kernel can hang the system.
Paging activity can be monitored using the vmstat command or using the sar command (option '-B') which comes with the sysstat RPM. Since Linux tries to utilize the whole low memory zone, a low LowFree in /proc/meminfo does not necessarily mean that the system is out of low memory. However, when the system shows increased paging activity when LowFree gets below 50MB, then the hugemem kernel should be installed. The stability you gain from using the hugemem kernel makes up for any performance impact resulting from the 4GB-4GB kernel/user memory split in this kernel (a classic 32-bit x86 system splits the available 4 GB address space into 3 GB virtual memory space for user processes and a 1 GB space for the kernel). To see some allocations in the low memory zone, refer to /proc/meminfo and slabtop(1) for more information. Note that Huge Pages would free up memory in the low memory zone since the system has less bookkeeping to do for that part of virtual memory, see Large Memory Optimization (Big Pages, Huge Pages).
If you install the RHEL 3/4 hugemem kernel ensure that any proprietary drivers you are using (e.g. proprietary multipath drivers) are certified with the hugemem kernel.
In RHEL 2.1, the smp kernel is capable of handling up to 4GB of RAM. The kernel-enterprise kernel should be used for systems with more than 4GB of RAM up to 16GB.

  • Max SGA size?

    I've got a box with 2 gigs of RAM, but no matter what I set the kernel and init.ora parameters to, I can't start an instance with more than an 800 meg SGA. That's any combo of db_block_buffers and shared_pool_size. I get a Linux error 22 or something similar if I remember right. The system sees all the RAM, so that's not it, and I about maxed out all the kernel parameters. SHMMAX is 1.5 gigs. It's RH 6.2 patched with 2.2.16-3, and Oracle EE 8.1.6.1. The docs don't indicate any kind of limit in Oracle; they say the limits come from the OS.

    I looked in the Linux Administrator's Guide, and I didn't see anything about "relocating" the SGA. All I saw was the information about setting shared memory and semaphore kernel parameters.
    What does "relocate the SGA" mean?

    My RAM SIZE is 6 GB
    Regards
    ***SBJ***

    SGA size on 8i is static , and for increasing the size you have to make the changes in the pfile and bounce the database
    First thumb rule is that your SGA should not exceed more than 40% of your PHYSICAL RAM in oracle <= 8i version. You can go around 80% from oracle 9i onwards

    As per the Note
    Maximum SHMMAX values for Linux x86 and x86-64 [ID 567506.1]
    =======================================================================
    QUESTION 2
    ===========
    What is the maximum value of SHMMAX for a 64-bit (x86-64) Linux system?
    ANSWER 2
    ===========
    Oracle Global Customer Support officially recommends a " maximum" for SHMMAX of "1/2 of physical RAM".
    The maximum size of a shared memory segment is limited by the size of the available user address space. On 64-bit systems, this is a theoretical 2^64bytes. So the "theoretical limit" for SHMMAX is the amount of physical RAM that you have. However, to actually attempt to use such a value could potentially lead to a situation where no system memory is available for anything else. Therefore a more realistic "physical limit" for SHMMAX would probably be "physical RAM - 2Gb".
    In an Oracle RDBMS application, this "physical limit" still leaves inadequate system memory for other necessary functions. Therefore, the common "Oracle maximum" for SHMMAX that you will often see is "1/2 of physical RAM". Many Oracle customers chose a higher fraction, at their discretion.
    Occasionally, Customers may erroneously think that that setting the SHMMAX as recommended in this NOTE limits the total SGA. That is not true. Setting the SHMMAX as recommended only causes a few more “shared memory segments” to be used for whatever total SGA that you subsequently configure in Oracle. For additional detail, please see Document 15566.1, "SGA, SHMMAX, Semaphores and Shared Memory Explained"
    ==========================================================================
    Our server RAM is 128 gb.... as per the note 1/2 of the physical RAM we can assign for SHMMAX parameter... (apprx 60gb)
    How can i understood this answer for my configuration......
    Please advice...

  • Max memory size of timesten database

    Hi all
    I wanna create a database of 2G-size in timesten.The permanent size is set 1536MB and Temporary Data Size is 512MB.
    Following errors occur when connecting.
    +837:Cannot attach data store shared-memory segment, error 8+
    +703:Subdaemon connect to data store failed with error TT837+
    The command failed.
    Then I find that the max permanent size is up to 944MB when connecting susscefully.
    In addition,the environment is win2003 sever enterprise sp2 32bit, timesten 11.2.1 32bit and 4G memory.
    Thanks a lot!

    Unfortunately, 32-bit Windows is one of the most limited environments for TimesTen due to the way that Windows manages the process memory map for attached DLLs leading to a very fragmented process memory map.
    Note that TimesTen needs to be able to allocate a shared mapping from the paging file of size (PermSize + TempSize + LogBufMB + ~20 MB) and this needs to be able to mapped as a contiguous segment into the address space of all processes connecting in direct mode (such as the sub-daemon).
    With PermSize = 944 MB, TempSize = 512 MB and assuming you are using the default of 64 MB for LogBufMB then the total memory requirements for this datastore are ~1540 MB which is pretty much the largest that is likely to be possible on 32-bit Windows. If you need more permSize you should consider reducing te,pSize to compensate. Do not reduce LogBufMB. The default of 64 MB is only suitable for read-mostly applications; if your workload will include a significant percentage of insert/update/delete then you may even need to increase it to get optimal performance.
    Note also that even if you mange to load a datastroe that is close to the limit, applications may have problems connecting in direct mode if the application uses a lot of DLLs, or i it is Java with a large heap etc.
    Unfortunately, 32-bit Windows is not a great platform in this respect. 64-bit Windows is far superior (when coupled with 64-bit TimesTen) and you do not face these issues due to the mush larger process address space.

  • Sophos AV max scanning size / timeout

    Hi,
    I haven't found any changeable settings for max. scanning size or scanning timeout on a S160 v7.1.3 with Sophos AV.
    In the GUI under "Security Services-->Anti-Maleware"  it shows  "Object Scanning Limits: Max. Object Size:  32 MB".
    I'm not able to change it. This parameter seems not to belong to the Sophos AV.
    I can change it only after enableing Webroot or McAfee first.
    The CLI has no commands for adjusting AV settings.
    How can I control the max. scanning size or scanning timeout with Sophos-AV?
    Has it fixed values for it?
    Does anyone have an idea, how it works?
    Kind regards,
    Manfred

    With administrator rights, the value should be editable.  The object size is applied to all scanners which have been licensed and enabled on the appliance.

  • "max-pool-size"   what is it good for?

    SCreator simple CRUD use:
    After a while I get:
    " Error in allocating a connection. Cause: In-use connections equal max-pool-size and expired max-wait-time. Cannot allocate more connection"
    Which is odd, because its just me using the server/database. It looks like every tiime I run a test, another conection is lost.
    Do I have to restart the server? Is there a way to say "its only me, reuse a single connection"
    why does "connection pooling" make life harder?
    Can I turn it of?

    I got the same error in my JSC project. I search for few days and i found the solution. I do a mistake in my page Navigation. I forgot a slash in <to-view-id>.

    Hi,
    I am Shanmugavel, SharePoint developer,
    I am facing the below SharePoint 2013 deployment issue while deploying using VS2012.
    If i will deploy the same wsp or existing wsp
    (last build) using direct powershell deployment, the solution adding properly, but the same timeout exception coming while activation the features.  Please find the below error.
    I tried the below activists:
    1. Restarted my dev server, DB server.
    2. tried the same solution id different server
    3. tried existing wsp file (last build version)
    4. Deactivated all the features, including project Active deployment configuration.... but still i am facing the same issue.
    I hope this is not coding level issue, because still my code is not start running, before that some problem coming.
    Please help me any one.....  Last two days i am struck because of this...

    What you need to understand is the installation of a WSP does not do much. It just makes sure that you relevant solution files are deployed to the SharePoint farm.
    Next comes the point when you activate the features. It is when the code which you have written to "Activate" certain features for your custom solution.
    Regarding the error you are getting, it typically means that you have more connections (default is I guess 100) open for a SQL database then you are allowed to.
    If you have a custom database and you are opening a connection, make sure you close it as well.
    Look at the similar discussion here:
    The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool
    size was reached[^]
    I would suggest further to look at the
    ULS logs[^] to get better insight.

  • Need info about max HDD size available for Satellite Pro M30-813

    Hello,
    The following question is mainly to be addressed to authorized Toshiba support personnel. What exactly is the limitation of a maximum size of an internal HDD that I could use with my Satellite Pro M30-813?
    Recently, I have bought and installed seagate 160 GB SATA drive, onto which I have successfully installed WXP Pro and have been running it for quite a while with no problems. Recently, I have been copying large amount of data from an external hard drive to my new internal disk, and as the files were being copied as I noticed having about 50 GB free space left, I had experienced windows "delayed write failed" and a massive partition failure with no possibility to recover data. The system would no longer boot and the whole MBR was damaged. As the result, I have lost all data on my new disk.
    Although, I realize that Toshiba is not responsible for additional hardware that I use with my laptop and that is not officially supported by Toshiba, I am certain that as an end user of a Toshiba product I have the right to know about a max HDD size limitation information for my notebook model. Therefore, I request Toshiba technical support representative to give me a straight official answer to my question.
    Thank you in advance,
    Andrejs

    Hi Andrew
    > The following question is mainly to be addressed to authorized Toshiba support personnel
    I think you are in the wrong area if you are looking for an answer from an authorized Toshiba support.
    This is a Toshiba user-to-user forum! You will meet here Toshiba notebook owner and enthusiasts who share knowledge and tries solve problems but nobody from Tosh :(
    I could provide my experience with the M30 Satellite and the HDD upgrade possibilities.
    In my knowledge the Sat M30 supports a 40GB, 60GB and 80GB HDD for sure.
    In my opinion you could use the 100GB HDD but bigger HDDs will not run and functions correctly.
    So switch to a lower HDD size and enjoy the notebook!
    Ive goggled a little bit and found compatible HDD and the part numbers
    HITACHI GBC000Z810 -> 80GB
    HITACHI GBC00014810 -> 80GB
    TOSHIBA HDD2188B -> 80GB
    HITACHI G8C0000Z610 -> 60GB
    HITACHI G8BC00013610 -> 60GB
    TOSHIBA HDD2183 -> 60GB
    TOSHIBA HDD2184 -> 60GB
    I hope this could help you a little bit!
    Best regards

  • How to set  max-heap-size outside the jnlp file?

    Due to bug_id=6631056 It may not be possible to specify max-heap-size within
    the JNLP file for certain jnlp java applications.
    Are there other possibilities to specify this Jvm parameter?
    In the ControlPanel there is the possibility to specify Xmx for applets but not for jnlp.
    I have tried to add properties like
    "deployment.javaws.jre.0.args=Xmx\=128M" without success
    Many thanks

    Even in JNLP also you can specify the max heap size
    <j2se version="1.5+" initial-heap-size="128m" max-heap-size="512m"/>
    Thanks,
    Suresh

  • Different max photo sizes in emails, beams, photo stream?

    I've noticed differences in file sizes when emailing photos from the iPhoto app, when inserting in an email, and when emailing directly from the photo.  I've found that iOS 6 is able to send the largest file when inserting it into an email. If I select email from iPhoto, the full size option is a fraction of that. If I email a photo directly from the photo itself, the full size seems to be somewhere in-between.  I sent a panoramic photo three times, once using each method. Each time I selected to send the FULL file sizes, and each time they were different:
    iPhoto: 1918K
    insert in email: 12004K
    email from photo itself: 3529K
    Is there a reason iOS 6 does this?
    Why are the full photo file sizes not universal?
    Are the max file sizes being uploaded to photo stream?
    What is the best way to get the largest photo jpg off of the iPhone aside from syncing?

    John,
    You have several options for re-sizing photos, though (continuing from what V.K. has already stated). If you want to "customize" the size of each photo, you'll need to do so before you attach them to an email. They can be re-sized in iPhoto, or they can be opened in Preview and exported as whatever size you like.
    If your images are in iPhoto, select one, then choose File>Export. Use the export dialogue to select the size and compression of the resulting file, save it to someplace like your Desktop, then attach it to an email. The choices, here, are the same as they would be within Mail, but will be applied on an image-by-image basis.

  • What is the max file size that a Adapter Engine [J2SE] can handle ?

    We are having a scenario where a 4 GB compressed file needs to be sent across without mapping, I'm trying to explore the possible options to tackle this scenario.
    Some of the options, we are considering :
    - Sending a file from one Adapter Engine [J2SE] to another Adapter Engine [J2SE] bypassing PI. Adapter Logs will be monitored. What is the maximum file size that can be then handled assuming a standard installation ?
    - What is the max file size that Adapter Engine [J2SE] can send through PI without mapping?
    Any help with the above options or with any other possible solutions to handle extremely large file transfers will be much appreciated.

    Hi,
    j2se is not a good option here
    if you have 4gb then you need a copy solution
    a) build an proxy that will just copy the file from sender dest to receiver
    b) build an adapter that will do the same as proxy)
    this way processing of this message will be controlled with SAP PI/XI
    it will be as quick as copy & paste of the 4gb file
    I did the a) for one of the flow for 300 mb and it works perfectly
