Maximum Scaling size in Oracle 11g
Hi Guys,
In the number data type the syntax is NUMBSER(P,S) , What i understand here is I can use a number of p digits and s digits after the decimal for example NUMBSER(5,3) I can use a number of 5 digits and 3 after the decimal. However oracle doc tells Precision can range from 1 to 38 and Scale can range from -84 to 127.that means if i declare NUMBSER(38,127)
Maximum how many digits it will support in precision and scaling .
Please suggest me
Regards,
Papi
The precision p can range from 1 to 38.
The scale s can range from -84 to 127.

Optimal NTFS block size for Oracle 11G on Windows 2008 R2 (OLTP)
Hi All,
We are currently setting up an Oracle 11G instance on a Windows 2008 R2 server and were looking to see if there was an optimal NTFS block size. I've read the following: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/win.112/e10845/specs.htm
But it only mentioned the block sizes that can be used (2k - 16k). And basically what i got out of it, was the different block szes affect the max # of database files possible for each database.
Is there an optimal NTFS block size for Oracle 11G OLTP system on Windows?
Thanks in advanceIs there an optimal NTFS block size for Oracle 11G OLTP system on Windows?ideally FS block size should be equal to Oracle tablespace block size.
or at least be N times less than Oracle block size.
For example - if Oracle BS=8K then NTFS BS better to be 8K but also can be 4K or 2K.
Also both must be 1 to N times of Disk sector size. Older disks had sectors 512 bytes.
Contemporary HDDs have internal sector size 4K. Usually. -
How to change archivelog file size in oracle 11g
Hello,
In my oracle 11g database inside flash recovery area how to increase each files size , now it 41 Mb per file iits name is o1_mf_1_161_8mfpwtbj_.arc how to change it to
the understandable name.
Thanks and regardsHi,
As you know archived log is create when online log is switch. Archived log size might be maximum equal to online redo log size.
Because archived log size is copied from online redo log file, if you want change archived redo log size, then you must change online redo log size.
But you must think, what is advantages and disadvantages of change of online redo log size, it depends direct task LGWR process.
You can change archived redo log name with change LOG_ARCHIVE_FORMAT parameter.
See : http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14237/initparams103.htm

Maximum export size using Archiver 11g
Does anyone know the maximum size for an export action using the archiver utility?
Thank you very much in advance. There should be no theoretical limit.
The limiting factor is going to be file system space availability. (In other words, if you export the entire repository, does your underlying file system have enough capacity to essentially duplicate your current content?)
Your question is a bit random, though. Is there a business use case here? -
Hi All,
how to find the data size in particular Table?
Ex:I need find out the sh.sales table how much data size is loaded
Thanks,USER_SEGMENTS (or DBA_SEGMENTS)
And if it's a partitioned table, don't forget to sum the sizes.
You may also want to include any indexes on the table. -
Suggested data file size for Oracle 11
Hi all,
Creating a new system (SolMan 7.1) on AIX 6.1 running Oracle 11.
I have 4 logical volumes for data sized at 100gb each. During the installation I'm being asked to input the size for the data files. The default is "2000mb/2gb" is this acceptable for a system sized like mine, or should I double them to 4gb each? I know the max is 32gb per data file but that seems a bit large to me. Just wanted to know if there was a standard best practice for this, or a formula to use based on system sizing.
I was not able to find any quick suggestions in the Best Practices guide on this unfortunately...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!Ben Daniels wrote:

Hi Ben,
Check the note 129439 - Maximum file sizes with Oracle
Best regards,
Orkun Gedik -
Maximum Data file size in 10g,11g
DB Versions:10g, 11g
OS & versions: Aix 6.1, Sun OS 5.9, Solaris 10
This is what Oracle 11g Documentation
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28320/limits002.htm
says about the Maximum Data file size
Operating system dependent. Limited by maximum operating system file size;typically 2^22 or 4 MB blocksI don't understand what this 2^22 thing is.
In our AIX machine and ulimit command show
$ ulimit -a
time(seconds) unlimited
file(blocks) unlimited <-------------------------------------------
data(kbytes) unlimited
stack(kbytes) 4194304
memory(kbytes) unlimited
coredump(blocks) unlimited
nofiles(descriptors) unlimited
threads(per process) unlimited
processes(per user) unlimitedSo, this means, In AIX that both the OS and Oracle can create a data file of any Size. Right?
What about 10g, 11g DBs running on Sun OS 5.9 and Solaris 10 ? Is there any Limit on the data file size? How do i determine maximum number of blocks for an OS?df -g would give you the block size. OS blocksize is 512 bytes on AIX.
Lets say the db_block_size is 8k. What would the maximum file size for data file in Small File tablespace and Big File tablespace be?Smallfile (traditional) Tablespaces - A smallfile tablespace is a traditional Oracle tablespace, which can contain 1022 datafiles or tempfiles, each of which can contain up to approximately 4 million (222) blocks. - 32G
A bigfile tablespace contains only one datafile or tempfile, which can contain up to approximately 4 billion ( 232 ) blocks. The maximum size of the single datafile or tempfile is 128 terabytes (TB) for a tablespace with 32K blocks and 32TB for a tablespace with 8K blocks.

Oracle 11g : Sequence Issues after impdp
Hi All,
We are migrating from Oracle 10g to Oracle 11g. As part of this, we take a expdp from 10g and successfully did an import using impdp on to Oracle 11g database.
But the problem is, there were few Primary key violations which occurred and all of them relate to sequences.
The Maximum data in the tables and the last number in the sequences differed which caused the issue.
Upon investigation and browsing the Web, http://www.nerdliness.com/article/2009/03/18/my-oracle-sequencedatapump-shenanigans ; I understood it could be because of the export taken while the application is online and writing to the database.
I reset all the failing sequences manually and it is fine now.
My questions now are
*1) Can we ascertain that the export taken when the source database is offline would eliminate the sequences issue.*
2) As this is being done in Production, I would like to make few checks to ensure that the sequences are properly imported. ---
Again reading few websites and oracle Forums, i found the below sql's..
select table_name, column_name, utl_raw.cast_to_number(high_value) as highval
from dba_Tab_columns
where owner = 'PRODUCTION_OWNER'
AND DATA_TYPE= 'NUMBER'
AND (OWNER, TABLE_NAME, COLUMN_NAME) IN
(SELECT CC.OWNER, CC.TABLE_NAME, CC.COLUMN_NAME
FROM DBA_CONS_COLUMNS CC
JOIN DBA_CONSTRAINTS C
ON CC.OWNER=C.OWNER
AND CC.CONSTRAINT_NAME=C.CONSTRAINT_NAME
WHERE C.CONSTRAINT_TYPE ='P'
ORDER BY 3;
SELECT SEQUENCE_NAME, MIN_VALUE, MAX_VALUE, LAST_NUMBER
FROM DBA_SEQUENCES
WHERE SEQUENCE_OWNER = 'PRODUCTION_OWNER'
ORDER BY LAST_NUMBER
If I relate the last_number with the highval and if they are same, does that mean the sequences are imported properly.
Note: We have sequence caching done and we are on RAC.

it could be because of the export taken while the application is online and writing to the database.I don't know what's your database's size , and what's acceptable downtime for you, but I could never propose such a migration tecnique to any of my customers, due to excessive downtime when databases are quite large.
It's quite obvious that you get such errors when the export is done while people are working, unless you use FLASHBACK_SCN or FLASHBACK_TIME parameter while exporting. But in this case, assuming you don't get errors (e.g. ORA-01555), you'll probably lose a lot ot transactions.
Assuming your 10g database is running in archivelog mode (which should be the default in production DBs) did you think of using RMAN to do the migration ? -
How to generate TPC-E schema/data sets in Oracle 11g
Hi,
I want to use TPC-E schema in my Oracle 11g database (Standard) and also want to use DATA SETS from this benchmark for some kind of testing.
I've download EGen v1.8.0 from this TPC website:
http://www.tpc.org/tpce/default.asp
but don't know who to implement this benchmark database into my computer's database. I'll appreciate if someone please suggest me how to do this...
Thanks alot.
Best Regards,

I want to find Optimal size of a data block size as this is the one parameter which can increase the performance of a database or decrease it.If there is a single optimal size, that would surely be the default Oracle block size - as Oracle should know perhaps better than any of us, just what block size differences do as it is their code that uses it?
Can I ask why you said that you would not have chosen this topic as a thesis? My leaning has always been to expert systems and A.I. Even designed and written my own expert system language years ago. One thing that is critical in such systems is how you structure data - and that has a nice database angle to it. One that I believe can still be exploited for research purposes.
Don't you think that it'll benefit DBA's or database developer after I reach a successful conclusion? To be honest, in the real world of database systems, the least of my concerns are data block sizes. For example, we're busy putting together a storage array that should have a maximum I/O pipe size of 40Gb. In comparison, we currently use dual 2Gb fibre channels on most of our servers for our I/O.
Technology moves fast. And perhaps there is an ideal block size for the standard storage array and Oracle instance today - but that could invalidated by new technology next year. Would I want to spend time and effort studying and analysing and researching a very specific technical subject, that perhaps is not considered as of that critical importance by DBAs and perhaps can be outdated with new technology and techniques?
I honestly do not want to put you off studying db block sizes. Perhaps there's still some critical issues to uncover in that respect. But personally.. there are many other subject areas in database technology that peak my interest a lot more. But then you have your personal preferences and likes and dislikes - and data blocks could be your muse. :-) -
Hope to convert the MSSQL server 2000 to Oracle 11G
Hi All
I've gone through the post

Microsoft SQL Offline Migration - How to ?
and try to convert the MSSQL server 2000 to Oracle 11G. but there are following issue :
1) Cannot create a row of size 8094 which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8096.? Even after this error it capture the SQL server model.
2) Then I try to convert the captured model by "Right Click" convert option. It opens 2 tab's (Migration Wizard step6 of 9) "DataType Mapping", "Object Naming" Object Naming is empty tab. How can i fix the naming rule while migrating ?
3) This will convert the capture model successfully in Oracle 11g but The naming of object like procedure, constraints ,views, indexes etc. Still exceed 30 character rule. I mean the object names are more the 30 character length.
There should be way to fix the naming standards while migrating or converting the model ?
Please advice if any
