Mini-DisplayPort- DVI- ADC

A couple of my users still have old ADC Cinema Display monitors that are otherwise working correctly through DVI->ADC boxes. Has anyone had any luck chaining the MDP->DVI to the DVI->ADC connector to get this setup to work properly?

As far as I know, Apple's DVI->ADC adapter is the only one available. Here it is:

MacBook Pro restarts unexpectedly after removing mini displayport-DVI adapter

Hi all,
I did a clean install of Mavericks a little while back. Since then I have been noticing an issue with my Mid-2009 17" MacBook auto-restarting, and have reduced it when I remove my mini displayport-DVI adapter.
I usually work with my macbook closed, connected to a Dell 24" external monitor connected via DVI. When removing the adapter the macbook quite often goes to the grey screen telling me that the machine must force restart. It is becoming really frustrating.
Anyone know about this issue or found a workaround?

Mini Displayport DVI Adapter Problem

I'm currently having issues with my MacBook Pro's DVI out (via Apple Mini-Displayport Adapter). Whenever my displays go to sleep (which is set after an hour) and wakes up, sometimes the external display (a SyncMaster 220WM) shows "snow" or "static" ... basically what you'd see if a TV station had no reception. If I let it sit for a minute, the second display will return (the MBP's primary display is fine, no errors of any kind). If I power off the Samsung display, the MBP treats the connection as if I pulled the cable out and reverts to a single screen setup. I have been able to reproduce this by using "Hot Corners" to sleep and wake up the displays. I'm using the 9600m GT as the computer is my desktop replacement. I never had this happen to me before with my older MBP with an 8600m GT using the same DVI cable and display. I think it's the mini-displayport adapter. Is this a common issue. Anyone else having these problems.

I have been experiencing the same flickering problem when using the mini Displayport output on the GT120 to drive secondary monitors at my office. Using a Monoprice cable instead of Apple's adapter provides a more stable signal, but we still get intermittent flickering where the screen goes black for a second, then a full image returns. I think this issue is due to massive loss of signal strength via the mini Displayport output on the GT120 card. Hot Plug Detect is also weak which points to low signal strength. This might be fixable by increasing the output voltage of the card slightly to boost the signal strength. Apple really should just issue a firmware/BIOS fix for this problem since the implementation of mini Displayport on these cards seems poorly engineered. Does anyone know how to do this?

Mini Displayport - DVI - HDMI 5V?

I kind of have an odd setup desire for an external display. I want to send video and audio to my entertainment unit from my MBP across the room. I already have audio sorted out (mini optical -> 30ft optical cable), but the video is a bit more difficult.
What I would like to do is have the Mini Displayport from my MBP go into my Mini DP -> DVI adapter (http://bit.ly/do7McJ). From there, a DVI to HDMI cable would take me to a HDMI over CAT5e/6 wall plate (http://bit.ly/C0bJg). This extender would then go to the TV.
The problem here is that the HDMI over Cat5e/6 extender needs the HDMI's 5V power source. Now, I have followed the pins all the way from HDMI (http://bit.ly/P2wWx - Pin 18) to DVI (http://bit.ly/TNJv5 - Pin 14?) to Mini Displayport (http://bit.ly/BCpof - Possibly pin 20)
Now I guess my real question is does anyone know if this will pass through 5V power: Mini DP -> DVI -> HDMI?

@Lambstechie - Now that I read into it, if the signal is converted, it can pass over 1 cat6 cable. What I was referring to is a cheaper converter, where an HDMI channel is connected straight to a Cat5/6 channel. And since HDMI 1.3 can work 100% perfect on 16 channels (just no ethernet, audio return, etc.) it seems like 16 channels over two 8-channel Cat5e/6 cables seems fit.
Also, I did not specify this earlier, but the total HDMI (not Cat5e/6) running distance will be under 10 feet, probably around 6 feet. Now when you say the loss of signal strength will happen around 15 ft of HDMI, does that include the distance running Cat5e/6 (approx. 30 ft), or just the HDMI length (6 ft).

Mini DisplayPort - DVI - Video

Just bought two adapters from the iStore, Mini Display Port to DVI and DVI to Video.
The reason for this is that my (old) TV does not have any digital inputs at all.
However, when I connect the computer to the TV I don't get a signal. When I connect the adapters the screen flickers briefly and then nothing.
Is there something wrong with my adapters or can this not be done?

It can't be done with what you have there. You need a mini-Displayport to VGA adapter and a converter box like this:

Then you'll need an RCA male to RCA male video cable to run from the box to the TV, and if the TV has audio inputs, you'll need a separate audio "Y" cable with a mini stereo headphone plug on one end and two suitable plugs (most likely RCA, but look at your set to confirm) on the other.

Xserve's mini displayport (dvi to vga) not working with snow leoapard

I am using a Acer 20" display with the mini displayport to vga. and since I updated to snow leopard it is not working anymore. If I change the resolution it is recognized but it is a very bad resolution and as I have a wide screen the resoltion that works looks horrible.
I saw that the update 10.6.2 had some updates including mini displayport problems, but it seems like it did not fixed the problem that I have!
I tried to call the apple support hotline but I got kicked out twice after the agent asked for my serial number and online I could not find anything that could help me to fix my problem.
so if there is someon out there with the same problem or an idea how I can fix that problem I would be very happy!

If there are listed options available, changing the refresh rate of the display frequency in the Monitors preference pane will sometimes yield better results at given resolutions.
I have to Xserves connected via a KVM switch to a CRT monitor; one Xserve is using the DisplayPort/VGA adapter, the other is straight VGA from the video card. I had to fiddle with the refresh frequencies to get the images to come close to matching.

Mini displayport DVI adapter while running windows?

Does this work? I bought one and I can use it on my macbook running os x but I dont get a picture when I run windows xp.
Anyone know how to get it to work? I've been googling and so but no luck so far!

How did you get it to work? I have no problems using my MiniDisplay -> VGA adapter on my external display, but when I use my MiniDisplay -> DVI adapter the screen just flickers

Mini displayport not working for DVI (VGA works)

So I've just received my new MacBook Pro, I ordered it with a mini displayport to DVI dongle.
When I plug this in to my known good DVI monitor, nothing happens no video is sent to the display and the preferences do not show anything.
However when I connect using a displayport to VGA to a VGA monitor it works. I know the displayport adapter is good as I have it working on my 27" iMac.
Could this new MacBook Pro be faulty??

Hey. I think there's a big problem with the mini displayport - DVI signal. I have a samsung T220HD monitor which worked fine with my old Macbook. I upgraded to a MBP 15" and I find the same monitor just has dead signal. Aside from the MBP itself, the differences are Snow Leopard and the mini displayport adaptor. I too ordered the adaptor with the MBP but on finding this and reading so many problems on discussions I opted to buy a mini displayport - HDMI adaptor made by NEET - which solved the problem.
However, some wierd things happen when playing games. Resolution (which is otherwise fine) goes dark and displays ugly artifacts. This never happened with the same monitor on a DVI signal using the mini DVI - DVI. I'm guessing either all this is a Snow L prob or a mini displayport thing.
It looks like a recent OS update (10.6.2) was supposed to fix DVI issues but apparently not for me. Apple really really need to sort this out.

Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter won't work on thunderbolt port

I bought 2 new Macbook Pro 13' , 2.9 Ghz Intel Core i7, with 8 Go 1600Mhz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E2617).
I have connected a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter in order to show presentations on different LCD projectors but no image appear.
The external monitor is detected but no image is shown. I have tried to change the frequencies: parts of the screen appears but no a correct image. I have the same symptoms with the 2 Macbook Pro. Using old Macbook Pro with the same Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter, the slides are showns normally.
I make a test with a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and with a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter and everythings works correctly with both adapters.
Does anybody has a solution?

By any chance were you using a VGA->DVI adapter when trying to use the Mini-DisplayPort->VGA adapter? As in Mini-DisplayPort->VGA->DVI?
I had trouble with this. I found going straight to Mini-DisplayPort->VGA or Mini-DisplayPort->DVI worked perfectly but once I added a VGA->DVI or DVI->VGA adapter to the chain the screen would be detected by OS X but the monitor itself would give the "No signal detected" message. I tried all these combinations on the same monitor.
Not sure if it helps your situation but I have noticed some similar issues.
EDIT: Oh, and I have the new MacBook Pro 15inch with Retina all fully updated. I noticed that with my late-2009 White Macbook didn't have this issue with the cables and adapters.

Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter problems

I connected my Apple Pro to my HD TV to watch streamed movies on my computer using the TV as a monitor. I was advised to purchase a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and all the connections fit. The first time I connected it was no problem. I watched the movie and the audio was fine. Then the 2nd time I connected I had no screen. It was a blue wavy screen on the TV, even though the computer screen was showing the show. I believe it may have been showing me some sort of screensaver application from what i've read on the forums but I have no idea why or how. Then the next day I tried again. The screen was fine but the audio quality was terrible. It was like listening through a cheap radio. Why am I having so many problems and the quality is not consistent. Are there settings I should change when I do this?

I have some good news.
Regarding the broken lines on the output of the Mini DisplayPort, it seems as though it "fixed" itself. My theory is, I recently installed Windows 7. Updated all the drivers on the windows side and got it to project properly with the new Intel 4000 graphic cards. Once that happened, it kind of "popped the cherry" on the port and now both Mac and Windows output properly through the Mini DisplayPort.
I've tested it with numerous adapters and once it outputed properly for the first time ever, all subsequent times work.
I now have tested in on LCD and DLP projectors, Philips monitors, Skyworth TVs, Sanyo TVs.
It's working with the Mini DisplayPort - VGA adapter.
It's also working with the Mini DisplayPort - DVI adapter as well.
Before I "popped the cherry" on the output port, nothing else worked. 1440x900 didn't work, neither did mirroring the displays. It just had to work once with whatever OS and after that it outputs fine all the time.
If you ahve the same problem as above, i'd recommend dual booting another OS, load the proper graphix drivers, get it to output properly once and hopefully it'll fix the problem like it did for my unit.

PS. after the initial output, it didn't matter which adapter I used. I kept the generic since it's cheaper, returned the apple one cuz it's exactly the same, and now bought a generic MiniDP - DVI for my at home workstation.

Last month, I've bought a MacBook Pro 15" 2011 Model with 2.2Ghz Intel i7 2nd Generation with AMD 6750M. I've also got a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter in order to connect it to my FULL HD Samsung 23" monitor. The display works fine but there is a lot of flickering going on. Also whenever I set the screen resolution to 1920 x 1080, the screen gets shrinked and moves to the sides. Half of the screen is beyond the limits of the display ,that is, i cant see the left half of the display. I've tried changing the monitor setting also but no use . Tried connecting it to windows (using BootCamp) but still the result is the same. All other resolutions work well but the native resolution of the monitor is 1920 x 1080, So i'm in dire need of it...Please help

Connecting a vga monitor to mini displayport with 2 adapters

Hi. I have a 21.5 inch iMac and I want to attach a second monitor. The monitor that I bought, the MultiSync LCD1560m, says it is mac compatible. it has two inputs; one DVI-D and one VGA. The monitor came with a vga cable, but not a DVI-D cable. I bought a dvi to mini displayport adapter, thinking the monitor would come with a DVI-D cable. I also had a VGA to DVI cable laying around, and attached that to the other adapter. The iMac won't detect the monitor. The chain from the iMac to the monitor is as follows: Mini DisplayPort > DVI > VGA. I don't want to shell out $40 for a new DVI-D cable. I've already rebooted multiple times plugging and unplugging the mnitor in before and after the iMac started up. I've also reset the PRAM. Does anybody have a solution that doesn't involve spending (much) money? (I'm broke. my monitor only cost $75). Thanks.

NTSC monitor component/RGB to Imac via min-displayport

I'm trying to hook up an NTSC monitor which only has RGB and component (Y, R-Y, B-Y) ports to my 2009 iMac, which thus must use a min-display port to do so.
Does anyone know of the best way of connecting this NTSC monitor to my iMac? I had thought about...mini displayport/DVI-->DVI to component.
Although mini displayport/VGA-->VGA to component might work too.
One concern I had was that I heard the mini displayports were DVI-D opposed to DVI-I, which may or not mean a component adapter would work.

I don't think component will work for the same reasons, unless you use something like the rather complex method explained in the post by Lougle in the above thread (the one with pictures). Maybe it is different...

I wonder if you could put a DVI-to-component adapter (or a DVI-to-composite adapter) at the end of this USB-to-DVI adapter, and get it to work. I don't think the product description has the answer, and I was going to send an email to OWC's sales/tech support to ask. I'm only curious, since I don't need such an output myself. Mini DisplayPort adapters

To save others from a lot of time searching, from what I have read and understand, Apple currently is the only vendor that has cables for mini DisplayPort (to DVI and to VGA). I do not know yet whether this Apple-only (as of now) interface has any legal restrictions regarding third party products for mini DisplayPort. I have contacted a major supplier of audio/video accessories to enquire about forthcoming adapters for this new port. I will post here when I hear back.
I, and I'm sure others, would like to have a mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable so that we can watch videos on our HDTVs. I know I could go mini DisplayPort --> DVI --> HDMI, but that would be expensive ($29 for Apple's cable alone) and cumbersome (DVI doesn't do audio, so a separate audio cable would be needed).
