New CF10, Server 2012, Default Document 404
On a new WIndows 2012 server (64bit), IIS 8.x installed, CF10 installed (to latest patches), CF10 hardening done. Ran WS-Config on individual IIS sites (not the "All" site). Jakarta virtual directory in place in the IIS site, and pointing to the correct wsconfig file for the IIS site : {CF-Home}\config\wsconfig\{iis-site-number}
Default document setting in IIS set to defaults; have also tried setting index.htm as first default document. Browsing to http://mydomain.com/ returns a 404. Browsing to http://mydomain.com/index.htm returns correct content. Problem happens with any subfolder on the site. Have verified that index.htm exists in all tested folders. (Browsing done on the local server console.)
Have deleted site web.config, then re-enabled index.htm as default document in IIS manager. Have checked permissions to the file; they are proper (and beside, going to http://mydomain.com/index.htm works fine, so don't think it is a permissions problem). No URL rewriting at server or site level. Authentication at site and server level set to 'anonymous' enabled, all others disabled.
IIS log files show a port 80 request: GET / returns the 404. Failed request tracings are no help.
This happens with any IIS site created. Also happens by IP address.
Have verified all needed IIS components (role features) are installed.
Am now officially stuck at figuring out this problem.

Could you please share your best practices for setting up a new Windows Server 2012 r2 Hyper-V Virtualized AD DC, that will be running on a new WinSrv 2012 r2 host server. (This
will be for a brand new network setup, new forest, domain, etc.)
Specifically, your best practices regarding:
the sizing of non virtual and virtual volumes/partitions/drives,
the use of sysvol, logs, & data volumes/drives on hosts & guests,
RAID levels for the host and the guest(s),
IDE vs SCSI and drivers both non virtual and virtual and the booting there of,
disk caching settings on both host and guests.
Thanks so much for any information you can share.A bit of non essential additional info:
We are small to midrange school district who, after close to 20 years on Novell networks, have decided to design and create a new Microsoft network and migrate all of our data and services
over to the new infrastructure . We are planning on rolling out 2012 r2 servers with as much Hyper-v virtualization as possible.
During the last few weeks we have been able to find most of the information we need to undergo this project, and most of the information was pretty solid with little ambiguity, except for
information regarding virtualizing the DCs, which as been a bit inconsistent.
Yes, we have read all the documents that most of these posts tend point to, but found some, if not most are still are referring to performing this under Srvr 2008 r2, and haven’t really
seen all that much on Srvr2012 r2.
We have read these and others:
Introduction to Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) Virtualization (Level 100),
Virtualized Domain Controller Technical Reference (Level 300),
Virtualized Domain Controller Cloning Test Guidance for Application Vendors,
Support for using Hyper-V Replica for virtualized domain controllers.
Again, thanks for any information, best practices, cookie cutter or otherwise that you can share.

Re-use Hyper V VM built in Windows Server 2008 R2 host in a new Windows Server 2012 host
Hi Forum members,
I was assigned a Windows Server 2008 R2 host machine with Hyper-V which I used to build many VM's for testing. This host machine now is going to be replaced with a new Windows Server 2012 host machine. Is it possible for me to continue
to use those VM's without any migration (e.g. is it possible to import or simply move the *.vhd + *.avhd files from the 2008 Server to 2012 Server and use them)?
Thanks and Regards,
HienThat is the official statement of 'support'
They will run, and you may need to do some custom configuration (such as using a legacy nic) but you can't call MSFT support and say your Server 2003 VM is broken on Hyper-V 2012 R2
The act of importing the configuration and linking to the VHD and snapshots will work.
The act of booting the VM and having the OS in the VM 100% happy is not automatic, but should work.
It becomes a question of where do you place the risk.

Just FYI, new Windows Server 2012 R2 RRAS Multitenant Gateway Deployment Guide
New! Windows Server 2012 R2 RRAS Multitenant Gateway Deployment Guide
This new guide is available on the Web at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn641937.aspx. It is also available for download in Word format at TechNet Gallery at
http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Windows-Server-2012-R2-37eb8e17
If you work for a Cloud Service Provider (CSP) or an organization that's planning on deploying cloud technologies, you might be interested in the new Windows Server 2012 R2 RRAS Multitenant Gateway Deployment Guide.
You may already know that in Windows Server® 2012 R2, the Remote Access server role includes the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) role service. (It also includes DirectAccess and Web Application Proxy, however those role services will not be discussed
in this article.)
The new deployment guide demonstrates how to use Windows PowerShell to deploy RRAS as a virtual machine (VM)-based multitenant software gateway and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) router that allows CSPs and Enterprises to enable datacenter and cloud network
traffic routing between virtual and physical networks, including the Internet.
You can use the gateway with VM networks by using either Hyper-V Network Virtualization or Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) - but using Network Virtualization is recommended due to VLAN limitations such as difficult management and a limited number of
available VLAN IDs.
If you're using System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SC VMM), you can use SC VMM to deploy Windows Server Gateway; however even if you are using SC VMM, you can manage the gateway with the same Windows PowerShell commands that are used for the RRAS Multitenant
Gateway. (Some Windows Server Gateway features are configurable only with Windows PowerShell.)
For information on deploying Windows Server Gateway with SCVMM, see the Test Lab Guide: Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Network Virtualization with System Center 2012 R2 VMM, at
http://www.microsoft.com/download/details.aspx?id=39284
With the RRAS Multitenant Gateway, you can create site-to-site VPN connections between your tenants' physical locations and your cloud datacenter. You can also provide tenants with point-to-site VPN connections that allow tenant Administrators to access
and manage their VM resources from anywhere. The RRAS Multitenant Gateway also allows you to configure Network Address Translation (NAT), so that tenant VMs can access the Internet, and you can deploy dynamic routing by configuring the gateway and tenant gateways
with BGP.

New Windows Server 2012 unable connect to Netlogon Service or update DNS records
Hi everybody, all of my Windows Servers 2012 decided to collapse after innocuous group policy update that was meant to make user passwords more secure.
The AD and DNS seem to be functioning "normally", I am able to add new Windows7 and Windows Server 2008 machines to the domain, I can see them in listed in the AD and DNS record are update correctly, however, as soon as I try to join Windows Server
2012 it breaks.
The event log is littered on the new server with:
The system failed to register host (A or AAAA) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
with settings:
Adapter Name : {DB7F73CE-E011-4F3C-BEBC-2CE7A871DF51}
Host Name : CHEETAH
Primary Domain Suffix : somedomain.com
DNS server list :
192.168.0.5
Sent update to server : <?>
IP Address(es) :
192.168.0.15
The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the update request it sent to the DNS server timed out. The most likely cause of this is that the DNS server authoritative for the name it was attempting to register or update is not running
at this time.
You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its settings by typing 'ipconfig /registerdns' at the command prompt. If problems still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.
and
Name resolution for the name _ldap._tcp.Default-First-Site-Name._sites.dc._msdcs.somedomain.com. timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.
When I try to ping the primary DC (WS2003) it fails, the Secondary DC (WS2012) responds.
The >nltest /sc_query:somedomain.com on Windows Servers 2012 returns:
Flags: 0
Trusted DC Name
Trusted DC Connection Status Status = 1311 0x51f ERROR_NO_LOGON_SERVERS
The command completed successfully
yet it works on all other machines.
I tried removing 2012 servers from the domain and rejoining - without success. The cookie crumbled when I added two new installations of Windows Server 2012 & 2008 and 2008 worked fine but 2012 showed same symptoms.
There is one peculiar thing that I had noticed on all Windows 2012 machines, it constantly showing "Workplace Connection - Connecting" in the networks pane on the right side of the screen, which I can't say i ever noticed before.
Unfortunately, the secondary DC is a multihoming server with Direct Access role - I am not sure if this may play some part but our existing configuration worked for a year now without any problems. Issue appeared when I changed the password complexity rule,
which boggles the mind. I wonder if there has been some other changes in GPO that did not propagate from years ago and finally comeback to break things.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
wminHello Ace, i wish you a Happy New Year! I hope your break was enjoyable and filled with cheer.
In the end I had to bite the bullet and reinstall all troublesome servers. Your recommendations from above removed some serious problems with the DA and DNS resolution.
I was able to attach new server to the domain without any problems and begin painful process of rebuild.
I have promoted TIGER to full DC controller role, but having some issues with replication. Although running >repadmid /showrepl gives positive
feedback, the sysvol folder on the secondary DC is empty.
Also there is a couple of warnings in the event log:
Event ID 4012
Log Name: DNS Server
Source: DNS-Server-Service
The DNS server is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to signal that the initial synchronization of the directory has been completed. The DNS server service cannot start until the initial
synchronization is complete because critical DNS data might not yet be replicated onto this domain controller. If events in the AD DS event log indicate that there is a problem with DNS name resolution, consider adding the IP address of another DNS server
for this domain to the DNS server list in the Internet Protocol properties of this computer. This event will be logged every two minutes until AD DS has signaled that the initial synchronization has successfully completed.
- which has not repeated since 3rd of Jan.
These events occur on the primary DC every few minutes:
Event ID 1030
Source: Userenv
Log Name: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Windows cannot query for the list of Group Policy objects. Check the event log for possible messages previously logged by the policy engine that describes the reason for this.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Event ID 1058
Source: Userenv
Log Name: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=somedomain,DC=com. The file must be present at the location <\\somedomain.com\sysvol\somedomain.com\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini>.
(The network name cannot be found. ). Group Policy processing aborted.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Should sysvol folder be shared on the secondary DC? Another interesting thing to point out is that
\\somedomain.com\sysvol\somedomain.com\Policies\ can be access
from all other machines except the DC1.
Cheers!
kind regards,

New windows Server Deployment (Onboarding) Documents.
Hi Team,
Can anyone share me the general Windows Server Onboarding (Pre-Build and Post-Build) basic Checklist or a Document, which will help us in streamlining the process of deploying a new server in the existing environment.
Thanks in advance.

Vimal Kumar SHi,
The question is quite broad.
For deployment, you can follow this blog:

This is what I have:
A very outdated machine running a small domain, SBS 2003 and Exchange - this is the ONLY server currently.
This is what my boss ordered:
A Dell R210 II machine with Server 2012 Standard (and I downloaded the trial for Exchange 2013).
He wants the old server completely replaced and gone - with everything moved over (including Exchange) to the new machine. The main reason for the upgrade is that not all users can access email on their machines (Macs, new versions of Outlook, etc.)
I have set up a new standalone server before but never migrated one - and I've found that going from SBS2003/Exchange2003 to Server2012/Exchange2013 is not simple in the least.
I thought I could just set up the new server as a DC on the domain and have everything replicated to it from the source server. Then I could decommission the old server. I have been told that 1) I can't upgrade Exchange 2003 to 2013 and 2) that I shouldn't
put Exchange on a DC. What do you do if you only have the one server?Hi,
Just additional. Please also refer to following threads and article, then check if can help you.
Migrate
SBS 2003 to Windows Server 2012 Standard

New Windows Server 2012 install won't boot after installing Hyper-V role.
I have just installed Windows Server 2012 onto a Dell PowerEdge R310. Everything worked okay until I installed the Hyper-V role. After that, when it tries to boot, I get "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting
some error info, and then we'll restart for you. (0% complete)" for a split second, then the system reboots into Automatic Repair mode.
In Automatic Repair mode, my options are Refresh your system (which tells me the drive that Windows is on is locked), Reset your system (which tells me there is no partition), and Automatically Fix your PC (which tells me it can't fix it).
I have updated to the latest version of the BIOS (1.11.0, which Dell states adds Windows Server 2012 support).
I'm at a loss.. I've tried everything I can think of. Has anyone run into this issue and figured out a solution? The only references I can find to this issue talk about Gigabyte motherboards with USB 3.0, but this server pre-dates USB 3.0 by
quite a bit.Hi,
Not only the BIOS but the iDRAC and storage part also need to ne up date check, have a look at the following list to see what you need for Server 2012:
http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/os-applications/w/wiki/3868.dell-bios-support-for-windows-server-2012.aspx
If any info was collected during the error then have a look in the event viewer or look for a kernel/memory dump file so you can try to find the issue, in many cases a driver, anti-virus sofware or 3rd part service can cause these kind of issues.

Print document's name in Event Log ID #307 on Server 2012
Creating a new printer server using Windows Server 2012. Everything is working out fine so far, however I just ran into one problem that didn't happen in our Server 2008R2 print server.
When looking at print jobs that have completed under: event logs --> Microsoft --> Windows --> PrintService --Operational, I have noticed that Event ID 307 is not displaying the printed document's name in Server 2012 (it did for Server 2008R2).
In Server 2012, the document name simply displays as "Print Document" instead of displaying the document's name.
Anyone have any ideas on how to get the document's name to properly display in the event logs?
Thanks for any help.Hi Alan,
I have configured a Server 2012 R2 standard as print server to manage printers and Monitor the print usage of users, however I am not getting the Print logs (Event Log ID 307) in the default event logs directory on the print Server.
I perform some search and come to know that it’s a known problem in Server 2012 and there is Hotfix available. I installed the Hotfix mentioned here
http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2938013/en-us , but still logs are not getting generated.
I also made the below setting for the logs.
Creating Registry entry
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers] "ShowJobTitleInEventLogs"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers] "ShowJobTitleInEventLogs"=dword:00000001
The policy name: Computer Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Printers
Allow job name in event logs
Keep printed Docs setting is also enabled on all the printers installed on Print Server.
Noting seems to be working here or am i doing something wrong here.

Unable to edit Default Domain policy on Server 2012 R2 domain controller
Hello,
I recently built a Server 2012 R2 domain controller and added it to my domain. When trying to edit the default domain policy I get the following error:
I can make edits to other GPO objects. All the other domain controllers are Server 2008 and are able to edit that GPO. The issue is on the Server 2012 box only. I've checked the delegated permissions, I'm a domain admin, and have opened
GPMC as administrator. Does anyone know what I'm missing? Thank you for your time.
TinoHi Tino,
>>Could that be the problem?
I don't think so, for we can still use FRS to replicate Sysvol. However, it is recommended that we use DFSR to replicate Sysvol if our domain
function level is Windows Server 2008 or above.
Besides, we can follow the suggestions from the following thread to check out which replication mechanism we are using.
DFS-R on 2008 R2 by default?
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/8f2042d3-193d-4414-b9da-cbcedc6a4c32/dfsr-on-2008-r2-by-default?forum=winserverDS
If the Sysvol is replicated by FRS mechanism, as I suggested in the last reply, we can do a non-authoritative restore for the Sysvol on the new Windows
Server 2012. This will restore the Sysvol from a healthy DC.
To perform a nonauthoritative restore, stop the FRS service, configure the BurFlags registry key, and then restart the FRS service. To do so:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd and then press ENTER.
3. In the Command box, type net stop ntfrs.
4. Click Start, and then click Run.
5. In the Open box, type regedit and then press ENTER.
6. Locate the following subkey in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters\Backup/Restore\Process at Startup
7. In the right pane, double-click BurFlags.
8. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, type D2 and then click OK.
9. Quit Registry Editor, and then switch to the Command box.
10. In the Command box, type net start ntfrs.
11. Quit the Command box.

Sharepoint 2013 + Windows Server 2012 as reverse proxy
Hello All -
I'd like to ask if anyone has any experience with the new Windows Server 2012 (reverse) proxy, in providing a single sign-on service to Sharepoint 2013.
Scenario:
My client has a Sharepoint 2013 with 3 web applications (portal, teamsites, mysites). All three URLs are available externally via HTTPS only. All clients have AD credentials (no requirement for claims based authentication), although this includes 3 domains
in two different forests (trusts exist). Everything is already configured to allow clients access from domain-joined devices.
My client would like mobile devices (not domain-joined) to be able to access the three web applications without repeated logon prompts. Browser default settings must be used, they do not want to instruct people to perform any configuration on their mobile
device - it all has to work "out of the box" from the client side. Clients will be using iPads and iPhones with Safari, Windows Phones, Androids etc.
I'm considering proposing the use of a reverse-proxy, and rather than using the now depracated Forefront TMG or probably soon-to-be depracated UAG, I would like to jump straight in to the new and very cool looking Windows 2012 proxy server.
It's my understanding that this will provide a single sign-on service in this scenario. I'm unsure whether an ADFS server is also required even for pass-through, the information available is unclear, and also whether any special configuration is required
to a domain controller (DCs in the environment are all 2008R2, with 2008R2 functional level).
I would appreciate it if anyone could give an overview or point me in the direction of some accurate documentation regarding all of the above. Most importantly, if any of my assumptions above seem incorrect, please let me know.
Thank you!
sysadminI've heard no supportability statement with SharePoint and the Web Application Proxy (likely because it isn't GA yet). However, it does use ADFS for SSO, so you'll have to SAML-enable your Web Applications. The only downside to this is if you
use anything that is SAML-unfriendly, like PowerPivot [Data Refresh] and at least in 2010, Visio Services and InfoPath Forms Services.

Configuring group policy for user profiles in Windows Server 2012 R2 Domain
Requesting some experts advise on configuring group policy for user profiles.
We will be building new Windows Server 2012 R2 Domain Controllers (Domain of 400 users).
The settings which I am concerned:
1. Folder Redirection: Desktop, Documents, Favorites.
2. Quota for Folder Redirection - 1 GB per user.
3. Map a networked drive - 1 GB per user.
4. Roaming profile - (Will ignore if it does not suit our requirement).
The question is how outlook profile will be retained / automatically moved if the users move from once computer to other?
FYI, E-mails hosted on MS Office365 and OST file size of few users more than 25GB. So, in case the user moves from one computer to other, the entire mailbox will be downloaded via internet. This consumes high bandwidth if more than 3-4 users shift per day.
Thanks a lot for your valuable time and efforts.Hi,
>>The question is how outlook profile will be retained / automatically moved if the users move from once computer to other?
This depends on where our outlook data files are stored. If these data files are stored under
drive:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local, then these files can’t be redirected, for folder redirection can’t redirect appdata local or locallow.
However, regarding your question, we can refer to the following thread to find the solution.
Roam outlook profiles without roaming profiles
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/3908b8e0-8f44-4a34-8eb5-5a024df3463e/roam-outlook-profiles-without-roaming-profiles
In addition, regarding how to configure folder redirection, the following article can be referred to for more information.

We seem to be having an issue recently after introducing new Windows Server 2012 R2 servers where they fail to register DNS correctly. The Windows Firewall is off and the servers are on the same VLAN with no firewalls between them.
When I do an ipconfig /registerdns or wait 24 hours for the system to try we get the following error:
The system failed to register host (A or AAAA) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
with settings:
Adapter Name : {4A0ECF05-193F-4BEA-AA46-BEC593BA752B}
Host Name : SRV-DATA
Primary Domain Suffix : internal.local
DNS server list :
192.168.0.50, 192.168.0.42
Sent update to server : <?>
IP Address(es) :
192.168.0.99
The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the DNS server contacted refused the update request. The reasons for this might be (a) you are not allowed to update the specified DNS domain name, or (b) because the DNS server authoritative
for this name does not support the DNS dynamic update protocol.
To register the DNS host (A or AAAA) resource records using the specific DNS domain name and IP addresses for this adapter, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.
On our DNS server we have set for the internal.local zone Secure Updates only so that looks good because it is Active Directory that should be handling this authentication to update the record I assume. Just to mention that when also doing an ipconfig /regsiterdns
the update fails within a few seconds.

This issue is only affecting Windows Server 2012 R2 clients and testing with Windows Server 2008 R2 clients works no issues. So is this a mis-configuration or a bug with Windows 2012 R2? I have checked all DNS settings on client / server which all look good
to me so reaching out now to see if anyone has any ideas?
Environment:
- Windows Server 2012 R2 Domain Controllers (Forest/Domain Levels 2012 R2)
- Windows Server 2012 R2 Client machines (Physical and Virtual)
- Windows Server 2008 R2 Client machines (Physical and Virtual)The zone is configured as "Secure Only"
The PDC is the SOA for the zone
I dont have a packet capture from the DC, only the client.
The query you asked me to run is too long to paste in here, however this is the DNS zone it cannot update:

I have an Script mostly that is generated by SSMS which works with-out issue on SQL Server 2008, but when I attempt to run it on a new fresh install of SQL Server 2012 I get an Msg 8631. Internal error: Server stack limit has been reached. Please look for
potentially deep nesting in your query, and try to simplify it.
The script itself doesn't seem to be all that deep or nested. The script is large 2600 lines and when I remove the bulk of the 2600 lines, it does run on SQL Server 2012. I'm just really baffled why something that SQL Server generated with very
few additions/changes AND that WORKS without issue in SQL Server 2008 R2 would suddenly be invalid in SQL Server 2012
I need to know why my script which is working great on our current SQL Server 2008 R2 servers suddenly fails and won't run on an new SQL Server 2012 server. This script is used to create 'bulk' Replications on a large number of DBs saving a tremendous
amount of our time doing it the manual way.
Below is an 'condensed' version of the script which fails. I have removed around 2550 lines of specific sp_addarticle statements which are mostly just copy and pasted from what SQL Management Studio 'scripted' for me went I when through the Replication
Wizard and told it to save to script.
