Paging Memory ... and JAVA!

Hi all!..
My problem:
get 200.000.000 of double elements (i have a matrix)
following my calculates, i need 1.8 Gb of ram memory.. i have only 1 Gb.
now... how can i manipulate large set of data??
can i use paging memory?... and before... can java use paging memory!?
THANKS!!!

if I set my JVM with -Xmx2g, and i got 2g of physical
space...
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
any suggestion??... PLEASEThe problem is the 32bit VM under Windows (I assume you are using Windows) can't access greater than 2gb of memory. Its just how the OS and VM interact, and actually other applications would not be able to access greater than 2gb either. You'll have to set the heap to something smaller, like 1.7gb or so.

  • Memory and java beans

i have servlet that creates a bean that holds some data from a table.
Purpose: not to hit DB2 everytime to build some drop downs on jsp.
We just wanted to have a bean in the memory and access it whenever we need it.
Now, my concern is server memory.
Can someone tell me how does java data beans effect memory?
My java bean holds only plain text from the table.
I think there are over 1300 records. is it worth doing this?
Is there a guide that tells me for how many rows how many MB of ram is used?
    thanks
    nn

Well you need not worry much about memory as this will be taken care by the Container i.e. EJB Server in general
The EJB Server will serialize the object in the file if it is not used for a certain period of time and again deserialize when the file is used
    Bye for now

  • How to increase Memory and Java Heap Size for Content Server

    Hi,
My content server is processing requests very slowly. Over performance is not good. I have 2 GB of RAM any idea what files I can modify to increase the Java Heap Size for the Content Server. If I increase the RAM to 4 or 6 GB where do I need to make changes for the Java Heap Size and what are the recommended values. I just have Content Server Running on the linux box. Or how do I assign more memory to the user that owns the content server install.
    Thanks

  • SAP ECC6 memory and paging issues

    Dear Experts
I have recently upgraded my 4.6C systems to an ECC 6 system (DB2 LUW 9.5 on AIX 5.3 TL9 64 Bit OS)
I have been running the LPAR with 14 GB of memory and we are around 100-200+ users using the system, I was monitoring using nmon and found that Physical Memory was around 99.8% Used   (14311.8MB and 22.6MB was free) also the paging space was around 37.2% in result causing the system at times to run slow which can have a very negative effect on the users.
After further investigation I found that after a system restart the Physical Memory would start around 50.9% and increased at a steady pace until it reached 99.8% that is when the system would start using the paging space which would steadily increase, I found that the only solution was a system restart at least once a week to reduce the memory consumption.
At first glance it looked like a database manger memory leak with the process db2sysc, so I searched the net with the search words u201Cdb2 memory leaku201D and found the following APARs and notes.
APAR JR30285 - Pervasive memory leak when compiling SQL statements that use SQL/XML functions
APAR IZ35230 - There is a pervasive unix-specific private memory leak in the security component

Note 1352361 - Memory leak in shared memory area abrfci
Note 1147821 - DB6: Known Errors and available Fixes in DB2 9.5 LUW
After reading the notes and APARs I decided to updated DB2 to the latest fix pack (5SAP), but after the fix pack was implemented it did not solve the memory problem
I started look at different problems with SAP ECC6, db2 and AIX with paging/memory problems and I found the following notes to do with AIX memory and paging but none of them helped as all parameters and settings were set accordingly

  • Physical memory and paging

I know in SAP's world, memory means physical memory + paging. I want to know which program has contribution for swap.
    Suppose there is 4G physical memory on an application server, em/initial_size_MB = 4G, abap/heap_area_nondia = 4G.
    1) If there is no dialog processor running and one background job running which claims 2G memory, I want to know will swap occur?
    2) If there is one dialog processor running which claims 2G memory and one background job running which claims 2G memory, will swap occur?

By ST03N you can check the workload, by OS06 the swap .
By transaction ST02 you can check the folllowing parameters:
    SAP Roll area parameters
    - ztta/roll_first          : First amount of roll area used in a dialog WP
    - ztta/roll_area             : size of the local SAP Roll area in the work process
rdisp/ROLL_SHM      : size of SAP roll Buffer
rdisp/ROLL_MAXFS     : size of entire shared SAP roll area
SAP Extended Memory main parameters :
em/initial_size_MB : size of SAP extended memory allocated when                         the SAP instance starts up
em/blocksize_KB  : size block which split SAP Extended Memory
ztta/roll_extension : maximum size of a user context in the SAP Extended memory
SAP Heap Memory main parameters :
abap/heap_area_dia       : quotas oh SAP heap memory that a dialog                                 process can allocated.
abap/heap_area_nondia : quotas oh SAP heap memory that a nondialog                    process can allocated.
abap/heap_area_total     : size that can be allocated in total by all work                    process.
abap/heaplimit           : Workprocess restart limit of heap memory
if helpful reward point is appreciated

  • How to check actual allocated and used memory for java process in solaris?

    Hi,
I'm testing performance for java application on solaris 10. And I would like to know how to measure actual memory allocated and used for java process.
I'm setting -Xms512m -Xmx512m for my java process and I use prstat command to monitor it's memory. But I found that when I run prstat to check, in SIZE column is more than I setting (found 644).
So I'm don't know the actual memory that java process used. (In this case,is it mean the process use memory (644) more than setting (512)?)
    Thank you.

With Xms/Xmx you specify the Java heap size. On top of that comes the permanent generation (default max size 64m) and the C part of the process (the JVM itself with all its libraries and data).
With "ps -e -o pid, vsz, rss, args" you get the virtual and set resident size of your processes.
    Nick.

  • What is recommended size of System drive to keep operating system files , paging files and Memory Dump of hyper-v host.

    Hi ,
    I want to setup hyper-v host with 128 GB RAM  , Windows 2012 R2
What is recommended size of System drive  to keep operating system files  , paging files  and Memory Dump?
I tested to using 150 GB  , but when the server is crashed, there is no free space to keep memory dump file.
    Ramy

    Hi Ramy,
For Server 2012R2 the absolute minimum system drive is 32Gb but this assume you have limited RAM or have your Page file located on another drive. It used to be best practice to setup a small page file but MS PFE now suggest leaving windows to manage
    the page file size.
Obviously this is not always possible depending on the amount of RAM in the system, but base the system drive around this or offload the Page file to perhaps another drive. On top of this you also need space for the memory dump to be written, potentially
again up to the size of the RAM. Assuming you fire the machine back up after a crash, you need space for the OS, the Page File plus space for the associated dump file.
There is a nice little article here that maybe of assistance:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13383.best-practices-for-page-file-and-minimum-drive-size-for-os-partition-on-windows-servers.aspx

  • Confusion on Java heap memory and WLS_FORMS

    Hello all,
    Background first:
    Oracle Forms/Reports 11.1.2 64-bit
    WebLogic Server 10.3.6
    JDK 1.6 update 37 64-bit
    Microsoft Windows 2008 R2
Using nodemanager to start/stop managed servers
After having read all of the documentation and searched both this forum and the Internet for advice, I'm still utterly confused about the best way to make use of memory on the server (the server I'm working on now has 8GB). The two trains of thought that I have discovered in my search:
1). Don't change the Javaheap size at all (stick with the defaults) and just create additional managed servers on the same machine.
2). Increase the Java heap size for WLS_FORMS
Having said that, here are my questions:
    A). What is the best-practices approach (#1 or #2)?
B). If it's #2, what's the approved way to increase the heap size? I have tried adding -Xms and -Xmx arguments to the WLS server start arguments in the WLS console. These are applied when the managed server is started (confirmed in the log file), but because of the way WLS_FORMS is started, there are more -Xms and -Xmx arguments applied after mine, and Java picks the last one mentioned if there are duplicates.
First update: Question #2 seems to be answered by support note 1260074.1 (the one place I hadn't yet looked)
Thanks for any insight you can provide. If there's a document I've missed somewhere, I'm happy to be told where it is and will read and summarize findings here.
    Regards,
    John

    John,
Let me try to comment on each of yours:
1). We had been getting some "Apache unable to contact the forms server" type errors (the users were seeing the "Failure of server APACHE bridge" error). The log files showed nothing of interest. I increased the memory allocated using setDomainEnv.cmd, and the error seems to have gone away. Yes, I know that it was a shotgun approach, trying something without really having a reason to do so, but it seems to have helped Edit: Now that I review the OHS logs instead of the WLS_FORMS logs, I have found log messages, which leads me to Doc 1380762.1, which tells me I need a patch. DOH. And, oh crikey, Forms 11.1.2.1 is out, it came out shortly after we downloaded 11.1.2.0 to create these environments. Good news/bad news kind of thing... <blockquote>The Apache Bridge error is fairly straight forward if you understand what it is telling you. It is an error generated by mod_wl_ohs who is owned by OHS (Apache). This module is responsible for the connection between OHS and WLS. The Apache Bridge error means that OHS (mod_wls) was unable to get a response from the WLS managed server it was calling. Basically it was unable to cross the bridge ;) The cause could be anything from the managed server is not running, to the managed server is over tasked, or there is a network configuration issue and the managed server simply didn't hear OHS calling.
This is all discussed in MOS note 1304095.1
As for 11.1.2.1, this can be installed fresh or as a patch over 11.1.2.0. So for machines that don't currently have anything installed, you can go directly to 11.1.2.1 without having to install 11.1.2.0 first.</blockquote>
2). As tony.g suggested, we are looking for what we should do to solve the "I have n servers with x GB of RAM, what should I do to the out-of-the-box configuration of Forms for stability" question. <blockquote>As I mentioned, there really are no "Forms" specific tweaks related to how much RAM your machine has. The only exception to this is (although somewhat indirect) to use JVM Pooling. JVM Pooling can reduce the size of each runtime process's memory footprint by moving its java calls to the jvm pool then sharing common requests with other running runtimes. Memory usage by OHS or the WLS managed server really has little to do directly with Forms. Specifically to the managed server, from a Forms point of view, I would not expect the memory cost of WLS_FORMS to increase much because of load. I expect it to increase as concurrent load increases, but I would not expect it to be significant. If I had to guess, seeing an increase of 1m or less per user would not surprise me (this is just a guess - I don't know what the expected values would be). If we were to use our (Oracle) older scalability guidelines, typically we would have suggested that you should consider about 100 sessions per 1 jvm for best performance. Given that v11 uses a newer java version and scalability is better today, I suspect you can easily scale to a few hundred (e.g. 300) or so before performance drops off. Beyond that, the need to add more managed servers would likely be necessary.
This is discussed in MOS note 989118.1</blockquote>
3). HA is important to us, so we are implementing a cluster of Forms/Reports servers with an LBR in front of it. I have read in the docs on clustering, cloning a managed server, and via Support, how to increase the heap memory for the WLS_FORMS server. My thought process was "if Oracle gives me instructions on how to increase heap memory and how to clone managed servers, there must be a scenario in which doing so provides benefit." I'm trying to understand the scenarios in which we would do either of those activities. <blockquote>Refer to the note I mentioned above. Generally, if you limit the number of concurrent sessions to less than around 300-400, I would think the default settings should be fine. If you think you would like to go beyond 300 or 400 per managed server then likely you will need to increase the max heap for the managed server. Again, refer to the note I mentioned previously.
    Also see MOS note 1260074.1</blockquote>
I am aware of the JVM pooling (yes we do call out to Reports) - I've yet to implement this, but it's on my to-do list.
<blockquote>This is discussed in the [url http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E38115_01/doc.111210/e24477/jvm.htm]Forms Deployment Guide</blockquote>
    Hope that helps ;)

  • VC_I_GET_CONFIGURATION and paging memory

    Hi everyone
I am modifying an existing program that makes use of the VC_I_GET_CONFIGURATION FM.  Under certain conditions SAP will throw a 'memory_no_more_paging' error.  This always happens at line 55 of the SET_MD_TO_BUFFER Form, which is called from within the form SETUP_MASTER_DATA, which is in turn called from VC_I_GET_CONFIGURATION.  The FM module is called from within a loop round an itab that holds VBAP records for a customer.  If the number of records is reasonably large (by our standards - >5000) then this error seems to occur.
Looking at the code and debugging to see what is happening, it looks as if a config. table of about 400 rows is being repeatedly read and Exported to memory.  I think that this is acting as a buffer because prior to this a check is made to see if the exact combination has already been read. I guess this is why the memory error is being triggered.  Has anybody else experienced this? Is there anything I can do apart from requesting more hardware or re-writing the bespoke program?
    Thanks in advance...

    Hi
Just wanted to keep this one going - I'm no closer to figuring it out!

    Hi Bala
This change has since gone into our production system where we had real performance issues.  I have been improving the performance of the program as a whole and at nno point have I found using VC_I_GET_CONFIGURATION_IBASE to be the cause of any performance problems - its generally been down to bad SQL!  Using this version of the function has compeltely solved the original problem (short dumps because the memory ran out).  I haven't personally tried creating a custom function to use the VC_I_GET_CONFIGURATION version because there didn't seem to be any point - after all it was using less memory and ran faster!  The OSS note states that the VC_I_GET_CONFIGURATION uses the buffer to improve online performance and so is not designed for mass updates.  I'm not sure I follow the logic there since I wold have thought that mass updates would be precisely when you want to make use of buffered data.  If you have any thoughts on that matter I would be interested to know.
    Kind regards

  • Contribute "low on memory" and Acrobat won't redraw

I have two issues that I believe may be related.  First here's my system information
    WinXP SP3
    Intel Core2Duo E6550 = (2.33GHz)
    3GB RAM
    GeForce 8600GTS 512 MB Video
Running two 19" monitors, (at 1440x900 each)
Creative Suite Premium 2.0 (InDesign CS2, Photoshop CS2, IllustratorCS2, Acrobat 7 Professional, BridgeCS2, GoLive CS2Version Cue is disabled.)
Production Studio Premium 1.0 (Premiere Pro 2, Encore DVD 2, After Effects 7, Audition 2)
Contribute CS3, (including Bridge CS3, but I don't use it, I use Bridge CS2 for everything).
First Issue.  Intermittently, in both Adobe Reader 9, and Acrobat 7.0 pdf files that I have open will not display in the window properly, unless I reduce the size of the window to something quite small.  It will show the desktop in behind the window, or if I open a window on top, it shows that window even when I've moved it.
The second problem is similar, but occurs in Contribute CS3 and is always accompanied by a "Your system is low on memory..." error, until I reduce the size of the Contribute window, at which point, it is so small that it becomes unuseable.
The only other program that I have open at the time is Outlook 2007, with a couple of messages.
As this is happening, I open the Task Manager, see that there is plenty of available Physical Memory, and the CPU Usage is very low, under 10%.  I've set my virtual memory paging file to Custom Size of 4591MB.
The only way to fix it is to reduce the size of windows or close all the programs.  These two problems occur independently of each other.  Sometimes when I'm just trying to open a PDF file.
3GB should be plenty to run Contribute and Outlook, or Acrobat and Bridge.
What the heck is going on?

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes I have tried that, but to no avail.  The crazy thing is that it only really happens after I've been working in Contribute for a while.  Sometimes an hour or more.  Then it just starts doing this.
The redraw problem also affects other programs, that are not Adobe programs.  For example, when I open a Remote Desktop Connection to the web server where I am publishing, while this problem is occuring, the screen will not "draw" properly either.
I have a feeling that there is something strange about how Contribute, and Acrobat, and Windows share the memory, either the system memory, or the graphics memory.
Could this also be a problem caused by having both CS2 and CS3 programs installed?
    Chris

  • What is difference between C# Gzip and Java swing GZIPOutputStream?

    Hi All,
I have a Java swing tool where i can compress file inputs and we have C# tool.
I am using GZIPOutputStream to compress the stream .
I found the difference between C# and Java Gzip compression while a compressing a file (temp.gif ) -
After Compression of temp.gif file in C# - compressed file size increased
while in java i found a 2% percentage of compression of data.
Could you please tell me , can i achieve same output in Java as compared to C# using GZIPOutputStream ?
    Thank a lot in advance.

Does java provides a better compression than C#?no idea, i don't do c# programming. and, your question is most likely really: "does java default to a higher compression level than c#".
Btw what is faster compression vs. better compression?meaning, does the code spend more time/effort trying to compress the data (slower but better compression) or less time/effort trying to compress the data (faster but worse compression). most compression algorithms allow you to control this tradeoff depending on whether you care more about cpu time or disk/memory space.

  • Problem with out of memory and reservation of memory

    Hi,
we are running a very simple java program on HP-UX that do some text substitution - replacing special characters with other characters.
The files that are converted are sometimes very large, and now we have come to a point where the java server doing the work crashes with "Out of memory" message. (no stack) when it process one single 500MB large file.
I have encountered this error before(with smaller files) and then I have made the maximum Heap larger, but now when I try to set it to 4000M
    i get the message:
"Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for old generation heap"
When it crash with this message, my settings are:
    -XX:NewSize=500m -XX:MaxNewSize=1000m -XX:SurvivorRatio=
    8 -Xms1000m -Xmx4000m
If I run with Xmx3000m instead the java program starts but I get Out of memory error like:
    java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
    <<no stack trace available>>
The GC log file created when it crashes looks like:

    We are running:
    java version "1.3.1.02"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1.02-011206-02:17)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.3.1 1.3.1.02-JPSE_1.3.1.02_20011206 PA2.0, mixed mode)
We have 132GB of physical memory and a lot of not used Swap space, so I cant imagine we have a problem with that.
Can anyone please suggest what to do proceed troubleshooting or to change some settings? I'm not into this Java really so I really need some help.
Usually the java program handles thousands of smaller files (around 500 KB - 1 MB sized files).
    Thanks!

You have a one to one mapping? Where one character is replaced with another?
And all you do is read the file, replace and then write?
Then there is no reason to have the entire file in memory.
Other than that you need to determine if the VM (which is not a Sun VM) has an upper memory bound. That would be the limit that the VM will not go beyond regardless of memory in the system.
We have 132GB of physical memory and a lot of not used Swap spaceOne would wonder why you have swap space at all.

  • How to resolve the error " low paging memory"

    HI all ,
I developed a report, which is running fine in development and in quality , but when it runs on production , it shows the dump 'low paging memory'. how to resolve this , can any one sujjest please ?

    Hi,
    1) Run a trace ST05 in ur quality system and fine tune the memory consuming select queries.
    2) Discuss with the basis regarding this error, probably they can help you out by increasing some space in pRODN.

  • I think the error console might be a source of memory and lagging errors

I notice that if I open the Firefox Error Console logs that the error listings are fast and frequent (which is okay if the browser is working past them). However, after using Firefox v2 and upward I am now pondering if the error log might be the source of the hard-to-kill lagging and memory issues. I note that as the longer Firefox runs, the longer the error log must grow as well as the number of page fault calls which all eats up memory or requires more frequent disk swap paging to record it all. The longer it all runs, the bigger the error log goes.
Since the error log probably gets more leeway on memory cleanups and CPU hits (to retain accuracy) this eats up more processor time and more hard-to-kill memory space, which then kicks in the system's Paging File causing more disk swapping.
My suggestion is simple, create an ABOUT:CONFIG option to, clip off the error log once 100 (or user-defined) errors are hit. Delete the oldest errors, keep the newest until they get pushed off the rotating stack. Obvious problems with this are first renumbering rolls (deleting 001 and changing 002 to oo1 and so on also eats up pointless CPU cycles). Having an ever-growing numbering stack would hit an out-of-bounds error eventually (delete 001, number latest error 101, and so on).
A rotating "ERROR ROLLOVER LIST POSITION MARKER" is simpler.
Just have a variable called "ERROR LIST ROLL MARKER" and it holds a variable of 001 to 100. Whatever numerical value of the "ERROR LIST ROLL MARKER" is marks where the text value of the error listing is named "ERROR LIST ROLL MARKER".
Let us use for example that the last error on the rolling error list was at position 087
Text value for error list position 087: [ reference to undefined property ]
The value of numeric variable "ERROR LIST ROLL MARKER" would be 088
The text value for error list position 088: [ ERROR LIST ROLL MARKER ]
When we get the next new error, the variable numeric value of "ERROR LIST ROLL MARKER" would become 089
The text for error list position 089 would become: [ ERROR LIST ROLL MARKER ]
The text value for error list position 088 would become the text of whatever the current error was.
In this manner you can keep a simple quick list, save a bundle of memory, and in the event of a crash, you look for ERROR LIST ROLL MARKER values and you know exactly what the last error was and the 99 that preceded it.
When the ERROR LIST ROLL MARKER hits 100, then you simply push that to the 001 location when the next error hits and after the next error, the ERROR LIST ROLL MARKER becomes 002 and that current error text overwrites the 001 location.

Hi, I managed to solve the errors (kind of) by using this code.
    for (var i:int = tower1BulletArray.length - 1; i >= 0; i--)
    if (tower1BulletArray.parent)
    tower1BulletArray[l].parent.removeChild(tower1BulletArray[l]);
    tower1BulletArray.splice(i, 1);
However, the problem still persists that the bullets stay in the screen after I change the scene. Any solution? Thanks!
