RMAN restore in RAC

We are running two nodes in Oracle RAC environment and try to use RMAN to do the restore.
Case 1
First, we try to stop both instance using sqlplus
SQLPLUS>shutdown immediate;
Then, we connect using RMAN
RMAN>connect target sys/manager@abc1
and receive error "listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"
Case 2
We also try to stop one instance in SQLPlus and then use RMAN to connect the other instance. Then, issue shutdown immediate under RMAN. After that, issue startup nomount. It then return "not connected"
Is there anything that I missed ??
Thanks !

and receive error "listener does not currently know
of service requested in connect descriptor"Have you checked to see whether or not the Oracle listener is up and running?
RMAN will fail if it cannot connect to the listener and database.
In RAC, each node must be able to access the listener or RMAN will not work.
What kind of backup are you taking? It sounds like a cold backup.
use RMAN to connect the other instance. Then, issue
shutdown immediate under RMAN. After that, issue
startup nomount. It then return "not connected"
and receive error "listener does not currently know of service requested in connect Again- please check the status for the Oracle listener. RMAN will fail to work if it cannot access the database connection from the TNS connection with the Oracle listener services. Also please review the configuration of your Oracle listener.ora, sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora file for any possible errors with the Oracle listener network configuration.

    Hello,
    Refer this MOS doc *HowTo Restore RMAN Disk backups of RAC Database to Single Instance On Another Node [ID 415579.1]*
    On the Single Instance ASM, you need to specify the diskgroup name for the parameters "control_files, db_create_file_dest"

  • Please help with RMAN dup for RAC db

    Happy Holidays!! All,
    I need help with the following issue:
    Both target and auxiliary databases are:
    Database version is 10.2.0.3 with 2-node RAC db
    Servers are MS 2003
    Oracle Clusterware 10.2.0.3
    Oracle ASM for storage
    I have run the rman dup from RAC to a single instance db for a while. This is the first time I ran from RAC to RAC. This auxiliary db was refreshed before and was up for a while and was managed by server control tool. Now I am trying to refresh it with new backup files from production. I did the following as people suggested:
    1)     shutdown instance in the second node.
    2)     Startup nomount mode in the first node
    3)     Run RMAN dup
    It failed in the same place with slightly different errors. I pasted error messages at the bottom. I already created a TAR with Oracle but would like to know if anybody has any info related to this. Also I have several questions to ask:
    1)     Should I stop all services related to Oracle in node-2
    2)     Should I stop all clustware related services in node-1 except oracleCSServie since ASM uses it?
    3)     Is there any way I can finish the dup manually from the place I failed? What going to happen if I don’t finish the rest of the dup and go ahead with “alter database open resetlogs”?
    4)     How do I remove the database from under Server control – I already run “srvctl remove database -d atlrac” successfully. Is this all?
    Thanks a lot for your help and have a great holiday season!!!

    1) Should I stop all services related to Oracle in node-2
    No, you just need to stop the second instance.
    2) Should I stop all clustware related services in node-1 except oracleCSServie since ASM uses it?
    No, you don't need to stop anything. Just have the instance startup nomount.
    3) Is there any way I can finish the dup manually from the place I failed? What going to happen if I don’t finish the rest of the dup and go ahead with “alter database open resetlogs”?
    You have not shown enough information. Did the restore succeed ? Did the recover succeed ? What was it doing when it failed ?
    4) How do I remove the database from under Server control – I already run “srvctl remove database -d atlrac” successfully. Is this all?
    Yes, srvctl remove database is all you need. (unless you also want to remove from listener.ora, tnsnames.ora, oratab etc)

  • RMAN backup on RAC

    Hi,
    DB=10.2.0.4 OS=RHL (RAC with 2 nodes db01,db02). Following are the types of automated RMAN backups taken on db01.
    - OCR
    - Voting Disk
    - Talespaces Snapshot
    - Archivelog (every hour)
    - Backup Incremental level 0 (SUNDAY)
    -- backup incrementa level 1 (Mon-SAT)
    - Autobackup of Control file and SPFILE (CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON)
    Two main questions please. First, are these backups/backup types are enough FOR FULL RESTORE when talking about RMAN backup on RAC environment with 2 nodes? If not please suggest what else I need to backup?
    Secondly, backup home location is /rman which I can see on db01 ONLY. This /rman directory I cannot see on db02. My question is that In case of db02 failure can I restore from this /rman directory? or do I need to automate backup schedules also on db02 separately?

    Hi,
    THanks alot for your feedback. Makes my life easier :) . But actually I started studying this all subject because of the following error message in the log file. I found out about this error that doesn't seem to harm. Just wait for the job to finish or it will sort out automatically. Here are the lines from the log file.
    Fehler in Backuplogs gefunden:/oracle/log/fcp11-backup-2300.log: RMAN-00571:

    Control File and SPFILE Autobackup command on c1 channel at 02/08/2012
    06:10:41brORA-00230: operation disallowed: snapshot control file enqueue unavailableI studied few important lines from one of my book, Oracle 11g RMAN backup and recovery (Roberg G Freeman) that I am going to write after the following MAIN ISSUE:
    Node 1
    RMAN> show all;
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/oracle/product/10.2.0/db/dbs/snapcf_fp11.f'; # default
    Node 2
    RMAN> show all;
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/oracle/product/10.2.0/db/dbs/snapcf_fp12.f'; # default
    Thing which I just noticed regarding the above RMAN error is that snapcf_fp11.f can be seen on the Node 1 on todays date but snapcf_fp12.f was only on 10th jan.
    [oracle@db01dbs]$ ls -lrth
    -rw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall  20M Feb 27 15:10 snapcf_fcp11.f
    [oracle@db02dbs]$ ls -lrth
    -rw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall  20M Jan 10 13:28 snapcf_fcp12.fTHe few lines from the book which I mentioned above are: (Though you might not need to read those lines):
    "You need to move the snapshot control file to a shared location if you plan to run backups from more than one node. If you do not move the snapshot control file to a shared file system such as OCFS or an ASM disk group, then you must make sure that the local destination is identical on all nodes."
    My question is of course, how to sort out the above log file error. Becuse in our case, backups are run only from one node, and snaphost control file is not being moved to ASM disk groups. Local destination is also same on both the Nodes, isn't it (with different names). Why on Node 2 last snapshot was taken on 10th jan while on Node 1 it is todays date which seems fine.
    Control file and SPFILE which I noticed are stored on ASM disk groups also, so being shared between the two Nodes.
    (Sanme names/same location for control file and SPFILE on Node 1 and Node 2)
    Control file:
    +REDO1/fp1/controlfile/current.256.652803827
    +DATA1/fp1/controlfile/current.441.652869697
    SPFILE:
    +DATA1/fp1/spfilefcp1.oraPlease suggest.
    Thank you.

  • RMAN restore fails due to space issue

    Hi,
    My database size is 225 GB . I m restoring the backupfiles using RMAN from production backup to the test instance.During restore process rman failed due to space issue.When the error occurred rman restored around 122 GB.
    Now i increased the free space in server.So now my doubt is i have to delete the restored files (122GB) and start the restore process again or RMAN will automatically skip the the restored file and resume the process from where it was failed ?

    When you start the restore from the failure, RMAN knows whcih are restored and it will check file headers. if the headers match, it will skip restoring the files.

  • RMAN restore failing in another environment

    Hi,
    I am facing a problem. I have to restore a database backup from production to Integration
    environment. In Production, it is RAC db and RMAN and Veritas Net backup taking the backups.
    In Integration Environment also we have the same setup.
    So the steps I have done so far is:
    1.Have the export of RMAN catalog schema from production and imported in RMAN server in Integration
    Environment.#
    2. UNIX admins put and mounts the TAPE in tape library.
    3. Set the environment for new db in oratab file.
    4. connected to target and RMAN.
    5. startup nomount from RMAN.
    6.executed the following commands
    RMAN> run {
    2> allocate channel t1 type sbt;
    3> validate backupset 2805233;

    And also all the subsequent attempts to restore spfile/controlfile/database are failing.
    Now, I have been advised by Oracle that this is the problem with Media Manager and I have to contact

    Could any of you guys please advise, do we need to do any other configrations in net back to Identify

    Zach,
    Can you certain tests for me ?
    1)
    Lets assume some terms here
    a) origclient = your target host
    b) altclient = your destination host
    c)media manager server = host that contains your netbackup master software
    Can you goto altclient and first check if your altclient is able to browse the backups generated by the origclient
    $NETBACKUP_HOME/bin/bplist -C <origClient> -t 4 -l -R /
    2) Have you configured your ORACLE_HOME on the destination to link one of its libraries to the Media Management software ?
    goto $ORACLE_HOME/lib
    ls -lrt libobk.sl . This file should be a softlink to $NETBACKUP_HOME/bin/libobk.sl64
    3) Please use the SEND command in your RMAN restore scripts. You need so specify the NB_ORA_SERV (your media management master server) and NB_ORA_CLIENT (your origclient host)
    SEND 'NB_ORA_SERV=<media manager server>, NB_ORA_CLIENT=<origclient>';
    4) Make sure your $NETBACKUP_HOME/bp.conf has the required parameters for client and server. client will be your origclient and server will be your media management server that has the netbackup master software

    No luck. The error message is different but the result is the same... it keeps failing.

  • If I need a full rman restore which backups will it use?

    Hello,
    I have a database 11.1.0.7 with 8TB. Block change tracking is enabled.
    At the weekend I take level 0 backup and during the week level 1 cumulative.
    For some weeks the level 0 backup is failing, so I only have level 1 cumulative backups taken every week day with a 4 weeks old level 0 backup.
    If I need a full rman restore which backups will it use? Will it be the last level 0 backup with the last level 1 cumulative?
    I ask this because grid crontrol tells me that the recent level 1 backups input size is smaller than last week level 1 backups and in between I dont have any level 0 sucessfull backups. Shouldn't the input size of level 1 cumulative increase until the next level 0 backup ?
    The grid reports:
    Backup Name Status Start Time Time Taken Type Output Devices Input Size Output Size Output Rate (Per Sec)

    From http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/rcmvalid.htm
    Validating Backups Before Restoring Them
    You can run RESTORE ... VALIDATE to test whether RMAN can restore a specific file or set of files from a backup. RMAN chooses which backups to use.
    The database must be mounted or open for this command. You do not have to take datafiles offline when validating the restore of datafiles, because validation of backups of the datafiles only reads the backups and does not affect the production datafiles.
    When validating files on disk or tape, RMAN reads all blocks in the backup piece or image copy. RMAN also validates offsite backups. The validation is identical to a real restore operation except that RMAN does not write output files.
    You can monitor what RESTORE VALIDATE does.
    Make precautions, so you do not damage the production DB!!!

  • RMAN restore from active database, ASM

    I'm attempting to refresh a stage database from a prod database using RMAN restore from active database. Both are on ASM. After working through various hurdles, I've got one issue I'm a bit stuck on. I've got a handful of data files that do NOT have OMF names (ie MSTRDATA/mstrmdpd/datafile/gsa_indx instead of MSTRDATA/mstrmdpd/datafile/gsa_indx.351.714779777) and these are failing when I do the restore. The syntax I'm using in RMAN is as follows:
    duplicate target database to dwstage
    from active database
    spfile parameter_value_convert 'dwprod','dwstage'
    SET DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT '+DWPROD','+DWSTAGE'
    SET LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT '+DWPROD','+DWSTAGE';
    The error message I'm getting is this:
    RMAN-03009: failure of backup command on ORA_DISK_1 channel at 04/21/2011 13:26:24
    ORA-17628: Oracle error 19505 returned by remote Oracle server
    continuing other job steps, job failed will not be re-run
    Normally from what I've seen/read this error can be traced back to needing to pre-create the directories for the controlfiles etc, but since 90% of the datafiles copied correctly...
    Any suggestions as to a way around this, or am I going to be forced to restore from a backupset?

    This fails saying that "ORA-12528: TNS:listener: all appropriate instances are blocking new connections" which is quite normal given that the listener is havig a handle in BLOCKED state for this AUXDB as it is in NOMOUNT state.
    Could you please help me on how to proceed?
    One option can be to create the controlfile manually and mount the instance before doing the duplicate. I hope Rman can continue from there.
    Another option is to go for backup based duplicate.
    Is there any other way to go?
    Provide static registration on AUXILIARY side for your auxiliary instance and try again.For example change listener.ora file as
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
      (SID_LIST =
        (SID_DESC =
          (GLOBAL_DBNAME = AUXDB)
          (ORACLE_HOME = <your oracle home>)
          (SID_NAME = AUXDB)
    LISTENER =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <auxiliary host/ip>)(PORT = 1521))
      )And restart listener on auxiliary host then try again

  • Does RMAN restore from 11.2.0.3 to 11.1.0.7?

    Hi Team,
    Interesting point is here, source is on 11.2.0.3 and somehow we missed 11.2.0 home on target (my team mate forgot to built new 11.2.0.3 home - we have 11.1.0 home), not sure how this rman restored/recovered  with no issues on target even it has compatibility change (controlfile restore itself should fail).
    Source is 11.2.0.3 and target is 11.1.0.7, presently the instance up and running with no issues, but we decided to re build with 11.2.0.3 home
    Any hints? Please advice, I am curious about this functionality how did this happen! J
    Thanks,
    Venkat

  • RMAN restore from 10g to 11g

    Dear All,
    I have full rman backup and archivelog pieces where the version is 10.2.0.1.
    Now I have prepared a server with oracle 11g and same mount points and want to restore the database from those pieces.
    Is it possible?
    If yes then what extra precautions and necessary things I need to do before or after the restoration?
    Thanks in advance.

    Megatron wrote:
    No. I just want to upgrade my db. So that I plan to follow the below steps
    1. install oracle 11g software only in my new machine.
    2. copy the backup pieces from 10G server to 11G server.
    3. Run the rman restore and recover command.
    Will it be any issue?Yes, it is issue.
    You have to upgrade the database.
    Run from source 10g database, @?/rdbms/admin/utlu111i.sql
    In upgrade mode @?/rdbms/admin/catupgrd.sql
    after opening database in 11g @?/rdbms/admin/utlrp.sql

  • Can rman restore tablespace to a different tablespace name?

    Hi all,
    I was wondering that can RMAN restore a tablespace to a different name tablespace in the same instance? I have the full backup by RMAN, I wonder I can do that or not? Any helps would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    Rich,

    Hi,
    a tablespace is not necessarily a logical space to separate schema objects from one another (could be, but not necessarily, depends on your object distribution).
    So what you need is: export your original user schema with the exp utility
    then import this dump into another user schema with the imp tool (fromuser=old touser=new)
    BEFORE you create the new user and you give it a different default tablespace. If you like to really separate the objects in tablespaces (like for transportable tablespaces) you may deny access to any of the tablespaces of old user to the new user. That makes sure data is not erroneously loaded in the old tablespaces.
    Read the docs to understand this clearly if you like.

  • Using RMAN restore the database on a new host in ASM

    Hello All,
    I am trying to restore a database without using RMAN database duplicate.  I want to do set new name for datafile and rename log file for online logs and change database name at last using NID.
    here are details
    source database - APSPROD / server - X
    target database -  EMERALD / Server -Y
    Compressed backup is copied to destination server and I am trying to restore database using RMAN. Here is my init.ora file
    cat initAPSPROD1.ora
    DB_NAME=APSPROD
    compatible=11.2.0.3
    sga_target=8G
    CONTROL_FILES='+DATA_DM01/EMERALD/controlfile/cntrl01.dbf','+RECO_DM01/EMERALD/controlfile/cntrl02.dbf','+DATA_DM01/EMERALD/controlfile/cntrl03.dbf'
    DB_BLOCK_SIZE=8192
    db_file_name_convert=(+DATA_DM01/APSPROD,+DATA_DM01/EMERALD)
    log_file_name_convert=(+DATA_DM01/APSPROD,+DATA_DM01/EMERALD,+RECO_DM01/APSPROD,+RECO_DM01/EMERALD)
    DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST='+RECO_DM01'
    DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE=5500G
    So from above you can see that control file should be restored to +DATA_DM01/EMERALD and +RECO_DM01/EMERALD path.
    Question -
    when I am trying to restore control file. It creates an ASM alias name in +DATA_DM01/EMERALD/controlfile/cntrl01.dbf',+RECO_DM01/EMERALD/controlfile/cntrl02.dbf',' and +DATA_DM01/EMERALD/controlfile/cntrl03.dbf' but It creates fully Qualified ASM Filename  under +DATA_DM01/APSPROD and +RECO_DM01/
    Here is output
