Sql Developer & Vista 64

I am running Sql Developer on a Vista 64 system that was installed along with 11.1.0.7 DB. The Sql Developer version that came with this installation is 1.1.3 Though I can connect to the database I'm getting the below error when opening up Sql Developer and the help system contains no entries in the contents. Not sure if I can upgrade as I can't even find Vista mentioned in the install guide for 1.1.3 let alone 1.5. Advice? Thanks.

I had the same issue (new SQL Developer not seeing tnsnames.ora file). Once I moved the folder into my ORACLE_HOME, it found it fine. I'm guessing it uses relative addressing (..\network\admin) to locate the tnsnames.ora file. It could also be that defining either ORACLE_HOME or TNS_ADMIN also might work.
I really don't want two versions of SQL Developer (especailly one which doesn't work). What are people's thoughts on deinstalling the version that comes with 11g, and then moving in this sqldeveloper folder into ORACLE_HOME? An install document says that you shouldn't extract the standalone version (either 1.5 or 2.1) on top of the original version (1.3). I can sort of understand that, as it looks like there have been some significant changes (before, it was sqldeveloper.bat; now it's sqldeveloper.exe).
I did do this (deinstall, unzip, then mv of folder), sql developer ran fine (and did see TNS files). I'm assuming since it's no longer in the inventory, I won't have issues with upgrades or CPU patches making changes to it's files (it's effectively sefl-supported now).
The only thing I lost was the shortcut under the Start Menu. Is there an easy (scriptable) way to create this? I need to integrate this into some .bat files, which I've written to semi-automate client installs (ie. main one calls setup with a response file in -silent mode, etc.)

  • SQL Developer 2.1.1.64 - code template does not work in Windows Vista

I have been trying to import a code template in SQL Developer 2.1.1.64 / Windows Vista using the following steps:
    1. Import template (xml) file using "Preferences > Database > SQL Formatter > Import..." option. Pressed "OK" button.
    2. Clicked on "Preferences > Database > SQL Formatter > Oracle Formatting".
I expected to see the new profile under "Profile" drop-down-list-box, but it does not appear there.
I tried putting the template (xml) file under various locations, including:
    (a) C:\Users\<user_name>\
    (b) C:\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer\
Please let me know any suggestions that you may have.
    Thanks in advance.

I got it to work. In step 1 that I mentioned, "OK" button should not be pressed; go to step 2 without pressing "OK" button.

  • SQL Developer 1.1.2.2579 will not start in Vista Ultimate 64 bit

I have tried both versions of 1.1.2.2579 (with JRE/JDK and without). Both versions give me "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000018). Click OK to terminate the application." Build 1557 seems to work fine on the same machine (with UAC off. I have not tried it yet with UAC on).
Here are some machine details: MS Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit, default JVM Sun 1.5.0_11 [Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.5.0_11-b03, mixed mode)]. Since other folks had some problems with UAC I disabled that to see if it would make any difference. I get the same result with or without UAC when I try to launch the application normally. With UAC on and using "run as administrator" I get nothing at all. That is I get no error but the application never actually launches either. It doesn't appear to do anything at all.
The version of 1557 that seems to work fine is the one with the JRE.

  • Sql Developer compatible problem with Vista aero

My computer is Vista Ultimate x64 en-US. I have downloaded Sql Developer from here
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/sql/index.html
When I run it, the aero glass effect turn off automatically, When I close the sql developer, the aero turn on again.
Why does this happen? Does Oracle offer vista compatible version of sql developer?
    Thank you for any information.

    Thank you for the response.
But my laptop support Vista and later version of Windows only. That mean xp/2003 cannot be installed. I am a WPF supporter who need aero glass effect. So Vista or Win 7 with all effect turn on is necessary for me.
My current solution is to change style to classic when I use sql developer, and change it back when I support WPF customer.
Thank you for your answer and your time to response.
    Sincerely,
    Kira Qian

  • Sql developer 1.2 vista compatability

    Hi,
I have sql developer 1.2 installed on my windows XP. but now we are planning on migrating to Vista. will this create problems for my sql developer? is it compatable with Vista? please help.
    Thanks
    Nirmala

Others have been using sqldev over Citrix with success, you can search the forum.
Why don't you just try for yourself before releasing to the whole dept? Would save you the trouble of asking too...
    Have fun,

  • Screen refresh issue with SQL Developer 1.5.5 on Vista 64 bit

I am using the latest version of SQL Developer.
I have screen refresh issues in sql developer. On scrolling up and down the display gets jumbled, some time screen do not display at all. Its making working with SQL Developer very difficult. I don't have such an issue with any of my other editors.
Is this something specific to Vista? Is there any know solution to this issue.
    Thanks
    Edited by: user5899685 on Sep 1, 2009 11:14 AM

Specific? Not really, but judging from the posts here Vista is more prone. It usually indicates incompatibility between Java and video drivers.
If updating your JDK or video driver doesn't work or isn't an option, just disabling DirectDraw in \sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf usually works too:
    AddVMOption -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=trueHope that helps,

  • SQL Developer crashes under Vista

    Hallo,
i recently installed SQLDeveloper 1.5.3 under Vista w/o JRE. On my Computer i have JRE 1.6.0_11.
When i use SQLDeveloper and give Windows Focus to another Window (e.g. Notepad, Explorer ...) and return to SQLDeveloper with a click on the upper Windows Border SQLDeveloper closes (crashes?) suddenly.
    Any idea?
Another Question.: How can i get rid of the Filetype Association Dialog which opens on every SQLDeveloper Startup?.
    Kind regards,
    Peter

More specifically, someone managed to eliminate the associations issue by granting permissions to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SQL Developer.sqlFile . If that's not possible, you'll have to wait at least for 2.0 for the issue to be fixed.
    Regards,
    K.

  • Top 10 Obstacles to Sql Developer Becoming a World-class Tool

I've been working with Sql Developer day and night for the last 6 months.
On a positive note, the SqlDeveloper team has been the most responsive Oracle product team I've worked with in the 19 years I've been working with Oracle tools. They pay attention to their customers. It's noticed and much appreciated!
I thought I would share the biggest problems that I face with the tool on a daily basis, the kind of problems that make me want to work with a different tool each and every day.
My intent isn't to gripe, it's to focus attention on the biggest productivity drains I face using the tool. Others may have a different list, based on their needs. Without further ado, here is my top 10 problems list:
    1) Quality Control.
I cannot count on critical portions of the tool working correctly. This includes an oracle database development tool that is incapable of extracting oracle ddl correctly and which is incapable of correctly displaying information about SQL Server data and database objects. It also includes destroying connection files and losing keyboard settings. When the product was installed, it was incapable of properly displaying code in a worksheet when I scrolled thru the code. The details are listed in other postings of mine.
    2) Quality Control.
    See #1.
    3) Quality Control.
    See #1.
    4) Very badly done threading.
The tool locks up on a constant basis when it does a many tasks. Rather than let me work on some other task, I have to wait for it to complete. My current work-around is to have two or three sql developer windows open. That sucks life out of my RAM supply, but at least I can get some work done. And, of course, it will often completely lock up and never return, which means I lose all unsaved worksheets. This forum is full of postings about these issues.
    5) Memory Leaks / Internal memory corruption.
If I've had the tool open for a few days, or really worked it hard for a day, I will get bizarre compilation errors that make no sense. If I exit the tool, re-enter the tool, and compile the exact same code all will be well.
    6) Awkward and slow data entry interface for frequently performed tasks.
Example: I create a new table and want to start defining columns for it. I remove my hands from the keyboard to press the + button, then I have to set focus on the column name field (it should do that for me!). Now that my hands are back on the keyboard, I have to backspace the dummy "column name" value in the column name field (it should ditch that dummy value for me). Only after all that can I actually enter a column name. When I want to add a new column, it's back to the mouse again, for the same drill. The down arrow key should take me to a new column record, as should pressing return at the end of the last field in the column row.
    7) Destroys code
Changing a column datatype from varchar2 to nvarchar2 destroys the length of the column. Changing a field on a view destroys the instead of triggers. This is bad. There is no warning that this this is about to happen, which would at least give us a chance to avoid the problem. Better still, of course, would be not destroying that data.
    8) Inaccurate checking for record locking.
When I try to edit records in a data grid for a table, I often get an error message telling me the data was modified in another session. It is simply not true. A hand-written update statement in a sql worksheet will work just fine. I've seen posts in the forum discussing this issue. An Oracle database development tool unable to reliably update oracle data tables is embarrassing. See Obstacle #1.
    9) Unicode support
Sql Developer is heads above all the other tools I've tried out on this topic.
However, the configuration of the tool to provide unicode support needs to be simplified.
The tool needs to recognize the encoding of the files that are being opened up. On Windows Vista, Notepad seems to infallibly pick the right encoding for the file when I open it. Sql Developer should do the same. Files have specific encodings, the tool should have a default encoding (that I can override). Right now, the tool has a specific encoding and expects all files to match it. Extracting ddl to a worksheet does not respect the encoding choices of the tool, either. It only works with a limited set of tool encoding choices.
    10) Resources
Does the sql developer team have the resources they need to compete with vendors like Microsoft? One really big reason for picking sqlserver over oracle is the ease of use of the Microsoft front-end tools. It's not until later that they may realize that Oracle has more capability, but that's still a lost sale.

We are acutely aware of quality and with each release work at improving this. Providing a polished, professional and ultimately user friendly and useful tool is our constant goal.
The broader our customer base grows, the more demands we have. This is a good and exciting position to be in, although it might mean that we need to slow down on our release cycles.
Release 2.0 should address more of the threading and memory leaks displayed as the team have rewritten some of the sections. As for resources, it's true we're a small team and we get on with the work that we do.It might be a little slower than some would like, but I'm not convinced that having large team is necessarily always the answer.
As ever, some of the points mentioned could be added to the Exchange. We'll be reviewing and updating the Exchange again in the New Year.
I think there is another point to add to your list. A lot of what the tool is and will become is from a positive customer interaction we have had to date. While we continue to grow this, I think the product will grow and improve. The forum and all the positive interactions that happen here are key to taking the product forward.
    Regards
    Sue

  • Windows7 Beta - SQL Developer causes Windows themes to be disabled

If there is already a solution to this issue, I'd love to hear about it.
When I start SQL Developer on Windows7 Beta x64, I get a notice that:
A program that you're running is incompatible with the Windows 7 themes. When this happens, some visual elements are automatically turned off. When the program is no longer running, the visual elements that were turned off are turned on again automatically.
The windows "themes" is the aero interface - I'm not sure if this is an issue with Vista or not (it has an aero interface too), I gave up on Vista almost immediately and have been running either XP (with no problems) or Windows7 Beta (only minor glitches).
Does anyone know if there a Java or other setting that addresses this issue?

Go to <sqldev install dir>\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf and add the following line:
    AddVMOption -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true
I recommend you dont change the theme from the default to something else like Windows, lots of graphical glitches/exceptions
    Hope that helps.

  • Oracle SQL Developer freezes and locks up computer randomly

I attempted to find a solution to this before posting. I looked through the first 40 pages of this forum and on Google, through the Developer documentation, etc. with no luck.
The problem: while using Oracle SQL Developer, the computer randomly freezes. Things work, but it hangs too often and for too long to use. This is random - it can happen every 10 seconds or every 2 minutes. The mouse will lock up, and the keyboard buffer will get all messed up. For instance, if it happens to freeze while I'm hitting "backspace", it will delete many lines of text (I've lost a bit of work because of this in the past). The freezing will last about 2 to 20 seconds, and the only way out of it is to ctrl+alt+delete and kill SQL Developer.
If SQL Developer is running, and I'm in a different window - it will freeze the other windows as well. Again, it's impossible to use unfortunately. My coworker doesn't have the same problem, and he's connecting to the same database with the same version using Windows Vista. It must be something on this computer. I reformatted about 1 month ago, so it's a pretty fresh install and I haven't installed much of anything yet.
    I'm using Windows Vista Enterprise 32-bit w/SP1.
This was occurring with older versions of SQL Developer (1.2). I'm using the newest install that included the Java JDK. I've completely removed Java, my Oracle installs, and a host of other attempts to fix this, and nothing changes. I've tried running the .exe in the bin directory as administrator as well.
    Currently using Oracle Developer 1.5.1.54.40.
    Any ideas?

I tried dumping the contents, but the java dump wasn't showing anything at all, and it would never freeze while I had the console window in focus, so it wasn't very helpful unfortunately.
I fixed this issue by uninstalling the Java runtime on this machine and installing the Java JDK 6 Update 7 from java.sun.com/javase/downloads . I then downloaded the SQL Developer 1.5.1 version without the Java runtime included, and pointed it to the Update 7 .exe file upon first load.
I was using JDK 6 Update 6 previously, and it must have been behind the errors. Note that the Update 7 has to be downloaded from that website as it's a new version that hasn't been posted on the regular java.com site yet.

  • Tnsnames.ora file does not seem to load in SQL Developer

I've really tried my best to figure this out on my own ... through the Help, this forum, and Internet in general. I apoligize in advance for having to ask this, since I'm sure this is a common issue. This particular form entry was really close:
Database Connections will not load tnsnames.ora
But, I just can seem to figure out why, or where entries from my tnsnames.ora file are loading into SQL Developer.
    - I have the TNS_ADMIN system environment variable defined to the directory where tnsnames.ora is stored - C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\NETWORK\ADMIN.
    - I do not see a TNS tab as the forum entry above indicates anywhere in SQL Developer - This may be my problem.
It seems that this issue could be cleared up with better directions on how to import tnsnames.ora entries into SQL Developer. Is there any specific direction on how to get your tnsnames.ora file setup correctly with SQL Developer running on Windows XP - Besides the Help which mentions the setup of TNS_ADMIN, but doesn't really tell you what the expected result is, or where the entries will be, or how to verify this is working?
Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Using Windows XP/Vista...
After testing in our environment, it appears that SQL Developer 1.5.1 (5440) does in fact ignore the TNS_ADMIN environment variable and ONLY looks in the Oracle Home directory (network/admin). We define a central network location for our tnsnames file and have the tns_admin setup to point there instead of locally for our users.
When selecting to add a new connection (in 1.5.1, it works in previously releases... meaning 1.2.something) and selecting TNS, the drop-down remains empty. However, if I exit SQL Developer and then copy the tnsnames file to the local network/admin directory I can then re-launch SQL Developer and the drop-down is populated. Exiting SQL Developer again, deleting the local copy of tnsnames, and then launching SQL Developer yet again results in the drop-down being empty.
All other Oracle-related applications function as expected (as they have for years) using the TNS_ADMIN environment variable.
    Any suggestions/ideas?

  • SQL Developer starts every time as if first time and ingores preferences

Every time I launch SQL Developer, it offers me to configure file type associations. Also, many preferences, such as tab settings for editor, while preserved between sessions, have no effect. Other settings, such as the interface style, work normally.
    Windows Vista Business 32bit
    SQL Developer 1.2.1 Build MAIN-32.13

The file associations thing means you don't have access to the registry to associate file types. Probably connected to the Vista security model. Try registering the filetypes for use by sqldeveloper through explorer.
This other problems generally means you don't have write access to the sqldeveloper system directory.
