Tab controls eating up CPU time

A coworker created the section of code in the attached example to change the colors of each tab page in a tab control. Originally, he had this portion of code inside a while loop. We found that as the application ran it would use more and more CPU time until the CPU load was at 100% (it would start around 1-2%); the time for the increase was a few minutes. Moving this code outside of the while loop completely fixed this problem.
Question: why would setting a tab control color in a while loop cause this increase?
Platform: LabVIEW 6.1 on Windows 2000.

This behavior is caused by the repeated creation of page references inside the loop. When you move the Page property node outside the loop you don't see this memory leek.
The reason for this is that each time the loop executes the property node creates a new set of references. Since these references are always the same, it is best to have this code outside the loop and only get the page references once.

  • Disconnected users eating 25% CPU time

    Hi,
    Some times my wife stay logged in on our common computer (she wants keep open her files). When I log in her account is disconnected. If I do not so any think on the computer the CPU load is about 25%. I checked the task manager, my wife's disconnected account
    eating this CPU time. I checked the process, it is "Windows Logon User Interface Host".
    I have 4 core CPU. It seems there is thread in the "Windows Logon User Interface Host" which is in an infinite loop. I am using Windows 8.1 with the latest updates.
    It would be nice, if a Windows service does not eat CPU time just for nothing.
    Best Regards.

    Hi,
    Do you use remote desktop connection? sometime, a incompatible 3 party remote desktop application can cause a high logonui.exe cpu usage.
    And software like A-Tuning can also cause this issue, if you have this softwware installed, I suggest you uninstall them, then test again.

    Everything on my system looks like it is running in a slideshow at 3 or 4 frames per second.  Pretty much everything is being software-rendered, I guess.  I know that my ATi card cannot accelerate OpenGL untill kernel 2.6.32 comes out (at least not out-of-the-box) but I *know* it is capable of EXA, Xv, and Xrender.  On both my Ubuntu 9.04 install and my previous Arch install, Xorg stayed at ~5% CPU usage.  I'd kindly like some assistance in why nothing is being accelerated.
    Thanks.

  • Labview eating up CPU time

    I am running a program (LV 7.1) which has several VIs running concurrently.  It is a self-made server-client architecture utilizing TCP/IP communication protocol.  When the program is running with all of the VIs executing simultaneously and the client sending TCP/IP requests to the server, my whole computer starts to freeze (CPU usage shows 100%) and the TCP/IP communication times out.  The program was running fine when I made some simple changes and then it started to behave as above.  I went back to previous versions of the program and they are now acting the same way.  I can load the program on another machine and it runs fine.  I reloaded Labveiw 7.1, no change.  I am running Windows XP Professional, version 2002 with service pack 2.  I have a Xeon 3.6 GHz CPU with 3 GB RAM.  I tried the program on several other far less powerful machines and it works fine.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    I would start by placing a delay (as others suggested) in your client VI. Place a probe on the error out of the TCP Open in the client VI and check for errors there. Look for error code 60.
    It sounds as if your are opening and closing ports quickly. There are a finite number concurrent TCP/IP ports available from the OS. If they are not closed properly, they will need to time out before the OS closes it. Your CPU load may be pegging becuase you are flooding the TCP stack with open connection requests and you've max'd out the connections.
    If the error is indeed 60, then you should handle that gracefully in your client (maybe a dialog box with a message 'sever not accepting connections; retry or abort'). If your design includes frequent TCP open and close ( > 1 per second) you may want to consider opening a more persistent connection; store the Connection ID in a shift register or a functional global and only close it when you are done communcating with the server.

  • How to measure and control process CPU time of a java program

    Hi dudes,
    what I am trying to do is to compare 2 algorithms, with the same computation time. To measure the time, one can for example:
    long startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
    while (System.currentTimeMillis() - startTime < 10 * 1000) {
    running some code
    However, in this case System.currentTimeMillis() measures only the wall clock time, not the real process time, i.e. if the CPU is also running some other processes at the same time, the computation time measure is inaccurate.
    I learned from other post that this is not easy, but is there on earth a way to solve it? the java profiler seems to be able to monitor the process time but cannot be used to control the computation time at run time. And another thing I learned is a method Thread.getCurrentThreadCpuTime, does it measure the real thread process time or wall clock time?
    Any other suggestions? I had all my codes in java and used only single thread, running under linux.
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Eric

  • Cloud Control 12c: no values for "Database CPU Time (%)"  for 9i databases

    Hi ,
    we have several databases in our CloudControl - and for most of them (Oracle release 10g or higher) the value "Database CPU Time (%)" under the tab "Databases" has a value. For databases of version 9i this value always shows up as a "-" sign - and for a few databases of version 10g or 11g, too.
    Is this a known issue of the CloudControl or the agent?
    We are using CloudControl 12.1.0.1.0.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Please post a screen shot. DB time instrumentation was added in DB 10g so that may be why in pre-10g databese, the value is absent. It should show up for 10g and higher databases though as long as they (user calls) have some CPU consumption to report.

  • Compressor eating CPU time...after quitting

    I've been running Compressor lately for some DVD projects. I set up a batch to encode, but quit after about half the video files were encoded to work on some other things. Performance was pretty darn sluggish. I checked Activity Monitor, and lo and behold, compressord and qmasterd were still running and gobbling up CPU time. I force quit both of them, only to see them crop up again a few seconds later. WHAT? A force quit should absolutely terminate the process, no questions asked. I don't want Compressor running in the background, which is why I quit it and Batch Monitor in the first place. This is not a feature, this is a problem, and an inexcusable one at that. Anyone know how to get rid of this crap without a restart?
    In addition, Compressor will not let any part of my computer sleep while running. The display on my iMac wont even dim, much go into standby. I can understand why it wouldn't let the computer or hard drive sleep, but the display? Come on! I sleep in the same room as this computer, so it's kind of an annoyance when I want to encode a batch overnight.

    Heya Noble,
    Basically, your computer's still compressing.
    Compressor is the application that allows you to prepare your transcoding and/or encoding.
    Once you "submit" the process, Compressor is done.
    Qmaster takes over to transcode or encode the file as submitted by Compressor.
    Batch Monitor merely allows you to view what's happening until Qmaster is done.
    If you force quit Qmaster, then you'll never have a transcoded movie or encoded MPEG2 clip.
    Your machine will probably compress 10 minutes of DV-NTSC source to the MPEG2 60 minute high quality setting in about 7 to 8 minutes. So, if you were encoding an hour of footage, you would have to allow Qmaster about 48 minutes to work. HDV source takes much, much longer. If this seems like "forever", then consider this: a G4/400 takes four hours to encode 10 minutes of DV-NTSC source to MPEG2. At that rate, an hour of footage would take a full day to encode.
    Most importantly, these numbers are based on not using the computer for anything while it's transcoding and/or encoding. Even surfing the web will increase the time it takes to process the file or files that you've submitted.
    If you are frequently submitting jobs to Qmaster, then you might consider getting a second computer so that you can work on one system while the other one encodes. It's not uncommon to have a dedicated box just for encoding. In general, the faster the processor(s), the faster the render.
    If you are submitting jobs that are hours in length, then you might look into distributed network encoding that's now available with Compressor (more processors = more speed).
    If your budget doesn't allow for another machine, you'll want to plan for using your computer at a "lesser" performance level or not using it at all until the job is completed.
    You should be able to put the display to sleep, but not the computer nor the hard drive.
    If you're having trouble with this, perhaps a piece of cardboard set in front of the display may block enough light such that you can sleep. You could also cover the computer with a box, just be sure to provide adequate ventilation. Be careful not to cover the computer with a blanket as it's sure to overheat and you won't be running Compressor at all.
    Of course, if you don't want to put anything in front of the computer: launch Final Cut Pro, make the Viewer window active while a Slug is open, choose View > Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Main. Then press command F12 to enable it. Your screen will go entirely black! Press escape to return to disable it. Leave iTunes open while playing some soft tunes and you should be counting sheep in no time.
    Hope this helps,
    Warren

  • Xorg eating CPU time

    Hi,
    I just noticed that Xorg is now constantly burning 2 t 6 % of CPU time, even if nothing happens on the desktop.
    I'm pretty confident this was not the case with the previous version of Xorg I had,
    (say, last update one month ago).
    Now I have this installed : xorg-server-1.10.2-1
    (I'm ran a full system upgrade this morning, I use x86_64, and I'm not on testing, to help you figure out the system I run)
    I'm using XFCE without panel, and cairo dock.
    I disabled any fancy tranparency and so on, because I look for the best battery life.
    Is there something new / noticeable with latests Xorg versions ?

    I am seeing the same.  I did a refresh install on a brand new x86_64 laptop.  Wondering if it was a kernel issue I downgraded to kernel26 2.6.38.8-1 but see no difference.  I do not see this performace hit on my i386 desktop using xorg-server 1.9.4.901-1

  • Graph range problem with tab control

    Hello.
    I am using LabVIEW 8.2.1
    I have five XY-graphs in a tab control, with five tabs. One graph in each tab. When running, theese graphs is constantly written to, but the user is only allowed to watch one at a time.
    The program also contain a maximum&minimum chart, containg the maximum and minimum value for every plot in the viewable part of the graphs. The user can zoom in on a graph, and then watch the max&min values in this picture. The values are calculated by taking the range to each graph, and use theese ranges to cut out the viewable part from the input data to the graphs.
    The problem is, that the program only see the last viewed range. If I view a graph in a tab, the max&min values for this graph is correct, but the four other graphs dont get the correct values. The graphs data is written correctly. It seems like the ranges from the "hidden" graphs dont get updated when not viewed. Does anybody know how to fix this problem?
    I have uploaded an example to this problem. See how the range just freezes on the not viewed graph, even the two graphs is exactly the same.
    Thanks

    Frederik,
    the reason for your issue is autoscaling. If the graph is not drawn, autoscaling will not take place, so you will not get any correct values, you will get the last autoscale-values.
    The behaviour therefore is "works as intended" since it reduces CPU usage.
    So the best way to work around is something like seen in the attached VI: you should compute the scaling for each graph on your own and use this to update the scales as well as the indicators (which i left out in my VI).
    hope this helps,

  • Design a WPF Tab control similar to the Wpf Ribbon

    Hi,
      I have a requirement to show the list of tools similar to that of a Microsoft word's Ribbon, but then i find some limitations in the Wpf Ribbon i..e it can not be completely customised, for example- The Ribbon tab header's height has to be increased
    when selected as shown in the figure, but I couldn't  find any relevant solution to accomplish it, so I have decided to use the native Tab Control and make it look like a Ribbon bar as suggested by  Andy
    ONeill
    Expected Ribbon Tab header Style(Done using native Tab Control)
       But the issue here is I'm not able to handle the resize behaviour of the Wpf tab control.. when the tab control is resized it has to arrange all the elements in the same way that the ribbon bar does
    on  Dynamic Resizing..
    can you help me building a Tab control with this feature...
    Thanks,
    Sai Kiran Reddy

    Thanks for your valuable reply Mr. Andy ONeill can you please tell me how to mimic the Dynamic
    Resizing behaviour of Ribbon bar using the WPF Tab Control..
    There is an awful lot of functionality in a ribbon.
    And it's pretty tricky to use.
    Personally, I usually go with a tabcontrol and then add functionality I need from there.
    Often two tabitems with horizontally arranged listviews are sufficient.
    You can see that approach in use in my article:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/28209.wpf-entity-framework-mvvm-walk-through-1.aspx
    <TabControl HorizontalAlignment="Left" x:Name="CommandTab">

    ScrollViewer.CanContentScroll="False"
    >
    <ListView.ItemsPanel>
    <ItemsPanelTemplate>
    <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"></StackPanel>
    </ItemsPanelTemplate>
    </ListView.ItemsPanel>
    <ListView.ItemTemplate>
    <DataTemplate>
    <Button Command="{Binding Navigate}"
    BorderThickness="0" Height="32" Width="100"
    Background="{StaticResource LightBrightGradientBrush}"
    Foreground="{StaticResource DarkDullBrush}"
    >
    <TextBlock Text="{Binding ViewDisplay}"
    TextAlignment="Center"
    />
    </Button>
    </DataTemplate>
    </ListView.ItemTemplate>
    </ListView>
    </TabItem>
    <TabItem Header="Edit" x:Name="EditTabItem" FontSize="10">
    <ListView ItemsSource="{Binding Commands}" BorderBrush="Transparent" FontSize="12" FontWeight="Bold"
    ScrollViewer.CanContentScroll="False"
    >
    <ListView.ItemsPanel>
    <ItemsPanelTemplate>
    <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"/>
    </ItemsPanelTemplate>
    </ListView.ItemsPanel>
    <ListView.ItemTemplate>
    <DataTemplate>
    <Button Command="{Binding Send}"
    BorderThickness="0"
    Margin="0" Padding="0"
    >
    <Path Data="{Binding IconGeometry}" Stretch="Uniform"
    Style="{StaticResource PathOpacityStyle}"
    Fill="{StaticResource MidDullBrush}" Width="32" Height="32"/>
    <Button.ToolTip>
    <TextBlock Text="{Binding CommandDisplay}"/>
    </Button.ToolTip>
    </Button>
    </DataTemplate>
    </ListView.ItemTemplate>
    </ListView>
    </TabItem>
    </TabControl>
    By the way.
    I think if you really work at it you can customise the ribbon by re templating the thing.
    On one project I ran  that work and wrangling the riibbon generally turned out to pretty much eat up all the time of one of my guys though.
    Hope that helps.

  • How to control the tab control using event structure?

    Hi,
    I am using tab control and event structure in the program.
    When i run the application event is not happening for the active page.
    When user switches from active page to the other page then event is taking place for all pages
    So, how to get the event trigger for the active page when the application is started
    For more clarification i am attaching the code "Test Control Tab using Event Structure.vi"
    Attachments:
    Test Control Tab using Event Structure.vi ‏52 KB

    You have a basic misunderstanding of dataflow. Maybe you should start with some tutorials or study some of the examples that ship with LabVIEW.
    The event structure belongs inside the while loop, and not vice versa. RIght now, the event structure only runs exactly once and never again.
    If the stop is pressed first, the VI will stop. Game over.
    If the tab control is changed (from any state to any other state!), the inner loop will spin forever as fast as the CPU allows, either executing one or the other case. It just reads the tab terminal to decide which case to execute. Changing tab never triggers any events. The VI is trapped inside the event until stop is pressed to stop the VI.
    you were closer to a reasonable program in the other thread:
    http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&view=by_date_ascending&message.id=287905
    Have you tried execution highlighting? Maybe things would become more clear of you do.

  • CPU times for application

    I am trying to figure out the best way to get CPU times for our
    application to do certain things. It sits on top of a database and
    I wanted to separate out what the database time and the application
    time is. I was going to use the 3C clock function to get a start
    time and then a time right before the database call and then a time
    when it comes back. It seems like the granularity of the clock function
    may not be what I need. Anyone have any ideas on how to do this? Is
    this the best way?
    Thanks
    John

    This is a hard question to answer because it depends on the cluster agent/application.
    On one hand you may have a simple Sun Cluster application that fails over in seconds because it has to do a limited amount of work (umount here, mount there, plumb network interface, etc) to actually failover.
    On the other hand these operations may, depending on the application, take longer than another application due to the very nature of that application.
    An Apache web server failover may take 10-15 seconds but an Oracle failover may take longer. There are many variables that control what happens from the time that a node failure is detected to the time that an application appears on another cluster node.
    If the failover time is 30 minutes I would ask your vendor why that is exactly.
    Not in a confrontational way but a 'I don't get how this is high availability' since the assumption is that up to 30 minutes could elapse from the time that your application goes down to it coming back on another node.
    A better solution might be a different application vendor (I know, I know) or a scalable application that can run on more than one cluster node at a time.
    The logic with the scalable approach is that if a failover takes 30 minutes or so to complete it (failover) becomes an expensive operation so I would rather that my application can use multiple nodes at once rather than eat a 30 minute failover if one node dies in a two node cluster:
    serverA > 30 minute failover > serverB
    seems to be less desirable than
    serverA, serverB, serverC, etc concurrently providing access to the application so that failover only happens when we get down to a handful of nodes
    Either one is probably more desirable than having an application outage(?)

  • Are indicators updated on an inactive tab control page

    To decrease loop execution speed (increase acquisition speed) I have placed diagnostic displays on a seperate tab control page which is normally not the active page.  The thought is that speed will be increased as these displays would not be updated unless needed (screen I/O is normally time consumming).
    Is this a viable method?
    Roy

    It is not that those controls will not be updated, but the drawing of
    those controls on the screen that you save. This can definitely be very
    significant. It is also good programming praxis to hide unnecesary
    front panel elements.
    Also keep in mind that the eye can only handle 10-20 updates a second,
    and even that is for most controls much too fast. Lowering the
    indicator update rate to, say, 5-10 times a second, can  already
    achieve  major CPU relief. depending on the kind of interfacing I
    would go to much slower updates still.  If you use big data sets,
    you should also try to prevent creating too many copies in memory.
