Table & Index Compression on 11g

Hi,
We are planning to upgrade oracle ( RAC ) from 10.2.0.4  to 11.2 and planning to turn on table and index compression. I would like to learn the pros & cons of turning compression on in a 6TB database. Any performance issues after table/index compression .
Thanks

  • Index Compression in SAP - system/basis tables?

    Hi!
    In thread Oracle comression in SAP environments the Oracle 10g feature index compression was discussed. We are now going to implement it also. SAP and Oracle say, this can be done for any index.
    So we selected the biggest and the most frequently used indexes and analyzed them. We could save about 100GB disk space.
    But here comes my question:
    In the hitlist of our most frequently used and biggest Indexes there are also some basis table indexes.
    A few samples:

    Is it really recommended to compress indexes of SAP Basis Tables also - especially in the area of Repository/Dictionary, t/qRFC and/or "Verbuchung" (VB...)?

    Hi Volkar,
    I have succesfully tested the oracle index compression on ECC5 environment for the following tables in a sandbox environment;
    ppoix
    pcl2
    pcl4
    In total I saved around 60GB in the tablespaces.
    Before compression I started a payroll run to see what time this will take without compression.
    After compression of the indexes I re-executed the payroll which took exactly the same time as without compression (2 hours). So no impact on performance.
    Also did an update statistics in DB13 -> no impact
    With brtools: force update of specific table -> no impact
    So we are seriously thinking about to take this into production.
    I have also looked at BI environment but concluded that there was nothing to gain.
    Unfortunately our infocubes are well build meaning that the fact tables contains the actual data and the corresponding dimension tables only the surrogate IDu2019s (SIDu2019s).
    Those dimension tables are actually very small (64k) and not suitable for index compression.
    Next step will be some Workflow tables.

  • New tables & indexes created do not show up in dba_segments view

    Dear all,
    I have created 3 tables and some indexes, but these objects do not show up in dba_segments view. Is this a normal behaviour? Previously, with dictionary managed tablespace, I can specify the minimum extent to create, when the table/index is created. But I'm not sure how the locally managed tablespace work. Please do advice. Thank you very much in advance.
    I'm using Oracle 11g R2 (11.2.0.1.0) for Microsoft Windows (x64), running on Windows 7.
    For the purpose of reproducing this issue, I have created the tablespaces as follow:
    CREATE TABLESPACE CUST_DATA
    DATAFILE 'd:\app\asus\oradata\orcl11gr2\CUST_DATA01.DBF' SIZE 512K
    AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 256K MAXSIZE 2000K
    EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL UNIFORM SIZE 256K
    SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT AUTO;
    CREATE TABLESPACE CUST_INDX
    DATAFILE 'd:\app\asus\oradata\orcl11gr2\CUST_INDX.DBF' SIZE 256K
    AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 128K MAXSIZE 2000K
    EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL UNIFORM SIZE 128K
    SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT AUTO;
    CREATE TABLE CUSTOMER_MASTER (CUST_ID VARCHAR2 (10),
    CUST_NAME VARCHAR2 (30),
    EMAIL VARCHAR2 (30),
    DOB DATE,
    ADD_TYPE CHAR (2) CONSTRAINT CK_ADD_TYPE CHECK (ADD_TYPE IN ('B1','B2','H1','H2')),
    CRE_USER VARCHAR2 (5) DEFAULT USER,
    CRE_TIME TIMESTAMP (3) DEFAULT SYSTIMESTAMP,
    MOD_USER VARCHAR2 (5),
    MOD_TIME TIMESTAMP (3),
    CONSTRAINT PK_CUSTOMER_MASTER PRIMARY KEY (CUST_ID) USING INDEX TABLESPACE CUST_INDX)
    TABLESPACE CUST_DATA;
    SQL> SELECT TABLE_NAME, TABLESPACE_NAME
    2 FROM USER_TABLES
    3 WHERE TABLE_NAME LIKE 'CUST%';
    TABLE_NAME TABLESPACE_NAME
    CUSTOMER_MASTER CUST_DATA
    SQL> SELECT INDEX_NAME, TABLESPACE_NAME
    2 FROM USER_INDEXES
    3 WHERE TABLE_NAME LIKE '%CUST%';
    INDEX_NAME TABLESPACE_NAME
    PK_CUSTOMER_MASTER CUST_INDX
    SQL> SELECT SEGMENT_NAME, SEGMENT_TYPE, TABLESPACE_NAME, BYTES
    2 FROM USER_SEGMENTS;
    no rows selected

    Prior to 11g, when you created a table or whatever, you automatically allocated one extent.
    This is now no longer true and depends on a parameter I don't remember.
    dba_segments is a summary of dba_extents.
    Obviously, if there is no extent allocated, the table (view is defined with inner join) will not show up.
    You could qualify this is as a bug and submit a SR to Oracle. But then the performance impact may be huge.

  • Problem in  setting Composite Instance Index in SOA 11G

    In SOA 11G the setIndex() xpath function is not working . But It was working in 10G.
    If I use this setIndex function in BPEL Java Embedding , in audit trails the function is executed. But If I see the result by querying the DEV_SOAINFRA.COMPOSITE_INSTANCE table INDEX1 column it is empty. No values is inserted into this INDEX columns.
    Can anyone please give a solution to set the composite instance index in SOA 11G ?
    Thanks in Advance

    1. setIndex() Xpath function in SOA 11G is working .
    2. syntax : setIndex(1,'anyValue');
    3. To view the index value for the instance created , query "DEV_SOAINFRA.CI_INDEXES" table.

  • Compression for oracle database and index compression during import of data

    Hi All,
    I have a query , in order to import into oracle database and also have compression and index compression , do we have some kind of load args for r3load and also do we have to change the tpl file ?

    Hello guy,
    I did this kind of compression within migration project before.
    I performed index compress first and then export -> import with table compress.
    One thing you should take care, delete nocompress flag from TARGET.SQL (created by program SMIGR_CREATE_DDL, program SMIGR_CREATE_DDL created pure non-compression objects for these considered non-standard tables). For table columns > 255, we should not delete this flag.
    Regarding to the index compress in source system, please check the following notes:
    Note 1464156 - Support for index compression in BRSPACE 7.20
    Note 1109743 - Use of Index Key Compression for Oracle Databases

  • Index compression in R3load system copy target db2 9.7

    We are in the early stages in planning a unicode migration:
    source
    ECC 6 on db2 9.1
    target
    Unicode ECC 6 on db2 9.7.
    OS a constant at AIX 5.3.
    The default behavior of system copy (target db=DB6) is index creation before data load.
    If I run systen copy specifying row comression, a compression dictionary is automatically created for suitable tables, but all indexes were created while the table was empty.  The resulting Db2 9.7 database has compressed tables but NO indexes are compressed.
    What is the current recommendation on index creation?  Does a db2 9.7 target with row compession selected change the recommendation?
    Should I be using a DDL mapping file (mapping large files to DDLDB6_LRG.TPL)?
    The DDLDB6_LRG.TPL could be tweaked to create indexes after table load...
    I would need to plan target LOG environment and temp space large enough for index creation of our largest tables...
    I don't think the default log settings would suffice.
    Ken Chamberlain

    I was thinking of using a DDLMAP file to map large tables/indexes to DDLDB6_LRG.TPL, and edit this file from prikey: BEFORE_LOAD (and seckey: BEFORE_LOAD) to AFTER_LOAD.  I can use the export to select out tables greater than a certain size into their own jobs.  I can use the resulting job list to create said DDLMAP file.  When indexes get created before the load, they never get the compress attribute.  If they were created after the load they would inherit their base tables compress attribute, which by this time table compression presumably has been turned on if applicable.
    But perhaps a better idea would be to add COMPRESS YES to the crepky and creind sections of the same file (and not change BEFORE_LOAD to AFTER_LOAD).
    I'm assuming large tables have large indexes which would benifit from compression.  This would also catch large tables (with large indexes) which don't compress well and don't get compressed.  I'll ignore large tables with small indexes for now.
    PS I resently installed Solution Manager 7.01 on linux db2 9.7 specifying row compression - no indexes get compressed but many tables do.
    What do you think?  Is this a better solution (for implementing index compression during a unicode migration)?

  • Need information/advice on dataware house compression on 11g

    We have an initiative to compress our ever growing datawarehouse.
    OS level is AIX, db version is 11gr1, and going to go to 11gr2.
    We would like to know where I can get a link regarding what is best to apply regrading compression in datawarehouse db.
    I tried oracle documentation, and not sure where to look .
    and plus are the compression a licensed product? any performance concerns? and any practical advices are highly appreciated here.

    Table compression does not require any additional licenses the key is that the only compression is done via direct insert pretty good for a data warehouse. To get and maintain compression for regular inserts and for updates an Advanced Compression license is required.
    Performance for inserts using direct method does not appear to have any large impact to load performance, however updates and regular inserts do take a bit of a hit when using compression. Queries that have any significant IO operations appear to benefit the most from compression and the larger the number of IO operations the higher the performance impact tends to be. Keep in mind that compression does take a CPU hit for the compression and de-compression operations, while this does not appear to be really large it is a consideration if your system have CPU resource issues already.
    I have found that partitioning and compression when used together offers the best performance when accessing using the partition key and partitioning offers benefits for management as well, found range/interval partitioning offered the best management benefits for a data warehouse.
    Some references besides the documentation which is a decent place to start, also google searches on Oracle Advanced Compression returns tons of results:

  • Partitioned table Indexing

    Hi Experts,
    I wanted to repartition my cube, so I compressed my Cube and repartition on the basis of 0calmonth.
    Now When I check the Index structure of F and E fact table. F table has got Index 900 or Local Partition Index based on SID_0CALMONTH but E table does not have such kind of Index.
    Now my question is after compression my data is in E fact table and partitioined successfully, so how does this Index 900 help Fetching partitioned data from E fact table when it is based on F fact table ??
    Thanks & Regards,
    Subbuji

    Hi Suman,
    I am not seeing data in F table, obviously there will be no data in F table after compression.
    I am checking the Indices in F table and there I found Index 900, which is nothing but Index on Partition key.
    My Question is if  it is recommended to Partitiion after compression or Partition the E table then why the index is based on F table ? or why there is no such kind of index on E table.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • How to obtain the table index in word use LabVIEW Report Generation Toolkit for Microsoft Office

    I created a word templete and it had several tables. When I use the "Word Edit Cell" function in LabVIEW Report Generation Toolkit for Microsoft Office, the function need "table index", and I didn't find any function to get or set the table index in word document. How can I achieve my attention to write value to specified table cell using the "Word Edit Cell" function?
    Thanks for reply!
    YangAfreet

    Hi yangafreet
    You do not need to get the table index for the word edit cell.vi from anywhere. LabVIEW will automatically index all the tables in the document. See the attatched vi for an example.

  • To Use  Cursor or  TYPE table Index by PLS_integer

    Hi All,
    Let's see if I have table with no. of records 19,26,20,000.
    If I want to loop through all the records which will be a optimized way To Use Cursor or TYPE table Index by PLS_integer.
    Please guide.
    Thanks.

    What is it you want to do to/with the rows you're looping through?
    Ideally you want to avoid looping, as that's row by row (aka slow by slow) processing and it's expensive time-wise.
    If you're doing DML (insert/update/delete) then you're best off doing it in one sql statement, rather than looping.

  • Fact Table index vs BIA Index

    BIA gurus..
    Prior to our BIA implementation we had the drop and rebuild index process variants in our process chains.
    Now after the BIA implementation we have the BIA index roll-up process variant included in the process chain.
    Is it still required to have the drop and rebuilt index process variants during data load ?
    Do the infocube fact table indexes ever get hit after the BIA implementation ?
    Thanks,
    Ajay Pathak.

    I think you still need the delete/create Index variants as it not only helps in query performance but also speeds up the load to your cubes.
    Documentation in Perfomance tab:
    "Indices can be deleted before the load process and after the loading is finished be recreated. This accelerates the data loading. However, simultaneous read processes to a cube are negatively influenced: they slow down dramatically. Therefore, this method should only be used if no read processes take place during the data loading."
