Need information/advice on dataware house compression on 11g

We have an initiative to compress our ever growing datawarehouse.
OS level is AIX, db version is 11gr1, and going to go to 11gr2.
We would like to know where I can get a link regarding what is best to apply regrading compression in datawarehouse db.
I tried oracle documentation, and not sure where to look .
and plus are the compression a licensed product? any performance concerns? and any practical advices are highly appreciated here.

Table compression does not require any additional licenses the key is that the only compression is done via direct insert pretty good for a data warehouse. To get and maintain compression for regular inserts and for updates an Advanced Compression license is required.
Performance for inserts using direct method does not appear to have any large impact to load performance, however updates and regular inserts do take a bit of a hit when using compression. Queries that have any significant IO operations appear to benefit the most from compression and the larger the number of IO operations the higher the performance impact tends to be. Keep in mind that compression does take a CPU hit for the compression and de-compression operations, while this does not appear to be really large it is a consideration if your system have CPU resource issues already.
I have found that partitioning and compression when used together offers the best performance when accessing using the partition key and partitioning offers benefits for management as well, found range/interval partitioning offered the best management benefits for a data warehouse.
Some references besides the documentation which is a decent place to start, also google searches on Oracle Advanced Compression returns tons of results:

    Hi,
i am new oracle grid control and its installaion.
I dont have any idea abt OMS and Agent.
    following steps i have perfomed.
    1) I have 1 DB on my machine.
    2) download Grid software linux.x64_11gR2_grid.zip.
    3) run the runinstaller.
    4) while opening GUI of run installer there are 4 options.i have selected option no 4 - install grid software only.
Now please help me what is next step which i have to perform. How will I up My grid control .How will I register My DB in Grid.
I am using grid control because i have to configure EM plug in for Times Ten.
    Regards,

    Hi,
If you want to use EM 11g Grid Control on 64-bit Linux, you should install version 11.1.0.1.0, which is available from here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/oem/grid-control/downloads/linuxx8664soft-085949.html
Note that the latest version of EM is 12c; however, if you still want to go with EM 11g, the following Support note documents the installation steps and has references to other helpful notes:
Step by Step Installation of Enterprise Manager Grid Control 11.1.0.1 (Doc ID 1059516.1)
By the way, the Concepts guide below has information about the EM 11g components including the OMS and agent:

  • DataWare Housing Database Optimization Parameter

    Hi,
Does any one have any standard on Oracle optimized parameter value with small DataWare housing enviornment?
    Any suggestions are welcome.
    thanks

As with any tuning problem, there is no "one size fits all" approach. The standard tuning methodology applies here as it does anywhere
    - Figure out how quickly something needs to run
    - If it isn't running quickly enough, figure out what is taking so much time
    - Once you know what is taking so much time, figure out how to reduce the time required. That may involve a global configuration change, it may involve tuning SQL, etc.
In addition, specifying at least the Oracle version would be critical-- there's a world of difference between an 8.1.7 database and an 11.1 database. If you are managing SGA & PGA separately, data warehouses generally allocate a larger fraction of the RAM to PGA than their OLTP cousins. They generally make greater use of parallelism. They more commonly use compression, bitmap indexes, and partitioning.

  • Install Dataware House on SUSE linux 9.3 with Oracle Rel 2 (9.2.0.4)

    Dear All
One of my customer needs dataware house on SUSE linux and i am a core DBA working on Prod and development servers upto now. So i want to know the necessary things i need to keep in mind before going to configure datawarehouse for the customer. Can you guys please suggest me the things i need to take care?
    Any URL's PDF's
    Thanks in Advance
    Ravi

But when i don't give the oracle user all rights, it isn't possible to proceed with theinstallation
But if you give that rights then it's a security hole. According to your words I guess you have similar enviroment settings:
    ORACLE_BASE=/
    ORACLE_HOME=/<directory_name>
Why you not installing on deeper directory such as /opt or some your own directory? For example
    ORACLE_BASE=/myoracledir
    ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/<directory_name>
    Then chown -R oracle:dba /myoracledir.
Then oracle will be owner just for /myoracle directory and all its subdirectories.
i just could look at the error details, but they didn't described the erroranyway.
That's not so true. Error log you could find in /tmp/OraInstallYYYY-MM-DD_HH_MI_SS..

    Hi Rama
Retailing consists of the sale of goods or merchandise, from a fixed location such as a department store or kiosk, in small or individual lots for direct consumption by the purchaser.[1] Retailing may include subordinated services, such as delivery. Purchasers may be individuals or businesses. In commerce, a retailer buys goods or products in large quantities from manufacturers or importers, either directly or through a wholesaler, and then sells smaller quantities to the end-user. Retail establishments are often called shops or stores. Retailers are at the end of the supply chain. Manufacturing marketers see the process of retailing as a necessary part of their overall distribution strategy.
Shops may be on residential streets, shopping streets with few or no houses, or in a shopping center or mall, but are mostly found in the central business district. Shopping streets may be for pedestrians only. Sometimes a shopping street has a partial or full roof to protect customers from precipitation. Retailers often provided boardwalks in front of their stores to protect customers from the mud. Online retailing, also known as e-commerce is the latest form of non-shop retailing (cf. mail order).
Shopping generally refers to the act of buying products. Sometimes this is done to obtain necessities such as food and clothing; sometimes it is done as a recreational activity. Recreational shopping often involves window shopping (just looking, not buying) and browsing and does not always result in a purchase.
Most retailers have employees learn facing, a hyperreal tool used to create the look of a perfectly-stocked store even when it is not.

    [edit] Retail pricing
The pricing technique used by most retailers is cost-plus pricing. This involves adding a markup amount (or percentage) to the retailers cost. Another common technique is suggested retail pricing. This simply involves charging the amount suggested by the manufacturer and usually printed on the product bize the manufacturer.
In Western countries, retail prices are often so-called psychological prices or odd prices: a little less than a round number, e.g. $6.95. In Chinese societies, prices are generally either a round number or sometimes a lucky number. This creates price points.
Often prices are fixed and displayed on signs or labels. Alternatively, there can be price discrimination for a variety of reasons, where the retailer charges higher prices to some customers and lower prices to others. For example, a customer may have to pay more if the seller determines that he or she is willing to. The retailer may conclude this due to the customer's wealth, carelessness, lack of knowledge, or eagerness to buy. Another example is the practice of discounting for youths or students. Price discrimination can lead to a bargaining situation often called haggling, in which the parties negotiate about the price. Economists see this as determining how the transaction's total surplus will be divided into consumer and producer surplus. Neither party has a clear advantage, because of the threat of no sale, in which case the surplus vanishes for both.
Retailers who are overstocked, or need to raise cash to renew stocks may resort to "Sales", where prices are "marked down", often by advertised percentages - "50% off" for example."Sales" are often held at fixed times of the year, for example January sales, or end-of-season sales, or Blue Cross Sale
    [edit] Retail Industry
Retail Industry has brought in phenomenal changes in the whole process of production, distribution and consumption of Consumer Goods all over the world. In the present world most of the developed economies are using the Retail Industry as their vital growth instrument. At present, among all the industries of U.S.A the Retail Industry holds the second place in terms of Employment Generation. In fact, the strength of the Retail Industry lies in its ability to generate large volume of employment.
Not only U.S but also the other developed countries like U.K, Canada, France, Germany are experiencing tremendous growth in their Retail Sectors. This boom in the Global Retail Industry was in many ways accelerated by the Liberalization of Retail Sector.
Observing this global upward trend of Retail Industry, now the developing countries like India are also planning to tap the enormous potential of the retail sector. Wal-Mart,the world's largest Retailer has been invited to India. Other popular Brands like Pantaloons, Big Bazar, Archies are rapidly increasing their market share in the retail sector. According to a survey, within 5 years, the Indian Retail Industry is expected to generate 10 to 15 million jobs by direct and indirect effects. This huge employment generation can be possible because of the fact that being dependent on the the Retail Sector shares a lot of Forward and Backward Linkages.
Emergence of a strong Retail Sector can contribute immensely to the economic development of any country. With a dominant retail sector, the farmers and other suppliers can sell their produce directly to the major retail companies and can ensure stable profit. On the other hand, to ensure steady supply of goods, the Retail Companies can inject cash into the production system. This whole process can result into a more efficient production and distribution system for the economy as a whole.
    [edit] Etymology
Retail comes from the French word retaillier which refers to "cutting off, clip and divide" in terms of tailoring (1365). It first was recorded as a noun with the meaning of a "sale in small quantities" in 1433 (French). Its literal meaning for retail was to "cut off, shred, paring". Like the French, the word retail in both Dutch and German (detailhandel and Einzelhandel respectively) also refer to sale of small quantities or items.[citation needed]
    [edit] Retail types
According to Jim there are three major types of retailing. The first is the market, a physical location where buyers and sellers converge. Usually this is done in town squares, sidewalks or designated streets and may involve the construction of temporary structures (market stalls). The second form is shop or store trading. Some shops use counter-service, where goods are out of reach of buyers, and must be obtained from the seller. This type of retail is common for small expensive items (e.g. jewelry) and controlled items like medicine and liquor. Self-service, where goods may be handled and examined prior to purchase, has become more common since the Twentieth Century. A third form of retail is virtual retail, where products are ordered via mail, telephone or online without having been examined physically but instead in a catalog, on television or on a website. Sometimes this kind of retailing replicates existing retail types such as online shops or virtual marketplaces such as futurebazaar.com or Amazon.[2].
Buildings for retail have changed considerably over time. Market halls were constructed in the Middle Ages, which were essentially just covered marketplaces. The first shops in the modern sense used to deal with just one type of article, and usually adjoined the producer (baker, tailor, cobbler). In the nineteenth century, in France, arcades were invented, which were a street of several different shops, roofed over. counters, each dealing with a different kind of article was invented; it was called a department store. One of the novelties of the department store was the introduction of fixed prices, making haggling unnecessary, and browsing more enjoyable. This is commonly considered the birth of consumerism [3]. In cities, these were multi-story buildings which pioneered the escalator.
In the 1920s the first supermarket opened in the United States, heralding in a new era of retail: self-service. Around the same time the first shopping mall was constructed [4] which incorporated elements from both the arcade and the department store. A mall consists of several department stores linked by arcades (many of whose shops are owned by the same firm under different names). The design was perfected by the Austrian architecht Victor Gruen[5]. All the stores rent their space from the mall owner. By mid-century, most of these were being developed as single enclosed, climate-controlled, projects in suburban areas. The mall has had a considerable impact on the retail structure and urban development in the United States. [6]
In addition to the enclosed malls, there are also strip malls which are 'outside' malls (in Britain they are called retail parks. These are often comprised of one or more big box stores or superstores.
Non-traditional exterior of a SuperTarget, JacksonvilleLocal shops can be known as brick and mortar stores in the United States. Many shops are part of a chain: a number of similar shops with the same name selling the same products in different locations. The shops may be owned by one company, or there may be a franchising company that has franchising agreements with the shop owners (see also restaurant chain).
Some shops sell second-hand goods. Often the public can also sell goods to such shops, sometimes called 'pawn' shops. In other cases, especially in the case of a nonprofit shop, the public donates goods to the shop to be sold (see also thrift store). In give-away shops goods can be taken for free.
There are also 'consignment' shops, which is where a person can place an item in a store, and if it sells the person gives the shop owner a percentage of the sale price. The advantage of selling an item this way is that the established shop give the item exposure to more potential buyers.
The term retailer is also applied where a service provider services the needs of a large number of individuals, such as with telephone or electric power.
IS Retail was original develop to meet specific needs of Retail industry where standard SD/MM cannot.
    - Significant functionality difference are:
    - Store specific features are built into IS Retail where as it is not in
    standard SD/MM.
    - Mass processing of pricing (some of the retail features were
included as standard SAP as of 4.6)
    - Assortment handling is not in standard SAP
There are other differences in inventory costing/valuation etc.
Retail valuation only available in SAP Retail.
What is known in the trade as the "retail inventory method" or the "retail method" involves valuating stocks at retail, often aggregated at merchandise category or departmental level.
Both the cost method and the retail method can be used in SAP Retail.
Actually IS-Retail is a combination of MM and SD plus other funtionalities speacially developed for the retail industry such as:
    Promotions
    Pricing
    Assortments
    Clasification
    Merchandise category
    Seasons
Is important to mention that all the funtionality of MM and SD is avialable in SAP IS-Retail with some diferences in some transactions:
Material master data (article in retail) has some diferences.
    Vendor master data.
    Site master data.

  • Need Network Advice: Multiple IP numbers.

Hello I need some advice on setting up my office's network. I have a small amount of network knowledge, mostly just setting up my home networks and our offices simple existing network. Right now we have Verizon internet. The network looks like this -
    1 static IP -> Verizon Modem/Router -> 24port gig switch -> wired to 8 offices -> connected to 8 computers.
We are canceling Verizon and getting Comcast with 5 IP addresses. Our goal is to continue using a network like we have, but add a server on the side for clients and remote employees to drop files. We have 2 mac mini's ready for the task of being servers with OSX Tiger on them. I would like to set one or both of them up as FTP servers, so we can hand out login/pass info and people can ftp into them to drop stuff or pick stuff up.
Anyone have any advice for how to setup a network with multiple IP addresses? Do I need more than 1 router? Which router is best for Mac, because we will need a new one to replace verizons. Any advice on where I can find information on setting up the FTP server on our mac mini with Tiger? I've looked around, but I don't think the sites I found were using Tiger, menus weren't exact and I couldn't get it to work.
    Thanks for the help!
    Our office is ALL mac, 5x_8-core 2x_imac 2x_macpro 2x_mini

You don't need a "Gigabit router". It's way, way overkill (and $$$$$$) for your network.
The Comcast link is going to max out at about 15-20mpbs, so any router with 100mpbs links is going to be more than sufficient.
As it happens, I wouldn't get a router anyway. Comcast are going to provide you with a router (they need to in order to terminate the RG-58 cable connection they drop and provide an ethernet port (that ethernet port, BTW, will be 100base-T).
What you really need is a firewall. One that can handle multiple public IP addresses and allow specific incoming traffic (e.g. the FTP servers).
I would recommend something from NetScreen. You may be able to pick up one of their NetScreen 5GTs pretty cheap now they're end of life (I have several of these around my network, including one in the exact same configuration you're talking about here). Failing that the SSG-5 would be sufficient.
They also have the advantage of being able to run as a VPN endpoint should you need that functionality.
At the end of the day your network topology would look something like:
Comcast router -> (NetScreen) Firewall -> Switch -> Clients
All the clients will connect to the switch and can talk amongst themselves at gigabit speeds. Any internet traffic would pass from the switch to the firewall and out to the big bad world.

  • Dataware House Slow Down

    Hi,
We are having some maping on our dataware housing system. When we shutdown that database then it is taking 2-3 hours more to finish.
What my thinking is when we shutdown database all sql needs to compile again. I dont know whether i am right or wrong.
Can any one highlight on this? It would be great if some one suggest possible solution for this.
    Platform: Oracle8i on HP UX
    Thanks
    Chetan

Which shutdown option are you using?
SHUTDOWN NORMAL is a system quiesce that waits for all sessions to log off - this can take a LONG time
SHUTDOWN TRANSACTIONAL will wait for all transactions to complete. If you are doing a large load transaction, this can take a long time
SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE will terminate all users sessions, roll back any uncommitted transactions and shutdown. If there is a long running transaction that needs to be rolled back, this can take a long time.
SHUTDOWN ABORT will crash the instance, requiring instance recovery upon startup. This will shut the database quickly.
NORMAL and TRANSACTIONAL are the cleanest options, but may take too long.
If your shutdown is taking too long, you can connect via another session, do a SHUTDOWN ABORT and then let the transactions roll back during the instance recovery on startup.

  • Dataware house question

    Hello Everyone,
In dataware housing what needs to be higher the SGA or PGA? I have read it that it was suppose to be PGA? Can any1 clearify this for me.
    Thanks in advance

For any database, the amount of RAM allocated to SGA and to PGA will depend heavily on the database workload and the application(s) connecting to the database. There is no rule that states that the SGA should always be bigger than the PGA or vice versa.
In general, data warehouses allocate a greater percentage of the available memory to PGA than would OLTP databases because data warehouses are generally supporting queries that involve doing relatively large sorts, hash joins, etc for relatively few concurrent users, and those sorts of operations require more PGA. Since data warehouses are commonly doing table scans and blocks read by one query aren't commonly re-read by other queries, the benefit of a lot of SGA tends to be less than for an OLTP system.
Whether these generalities mean that a particular warehouse allocates more RAM to PGA than to SGA in absolute terms rather than merely in relative terms compared to an OLTP database on the same hardware, though, depends entirely on the specifics of the system.

  • Networking help.. need a stronger signal through house

I need some advice/help with a network that I’m trying to setup in my house. I need to beable to use my xbox 360, mac mini (g) and macbook pro (n) aswell as my ipod touch(g).
Up until we finished the basement last week, I was running the modem/Linksys wrt54g router on the 2nd floor of the back of the house. I had an Ethernet cable going through the wall into the next room so that my xbox 360 was hardwired. I was able to use the laptop or ipod touch anywhere in the house. Now that the basement is finished, I wanted to move the xbox360 into the basement with the modem/router. It works however the signal is now passing from the basement, mainfloor and to the top floor. I’m getting signal strength of about 35% which isn’t useable.
I went out and bought an airport extreme as its dual band first off but I was hoping it would give a better signal. The mac mini in gets a signal of 35% in g mode and the macbook pro is getting signal of 52% when both of these are on the top floor. I’m frustrated and wondering if maybe returning the airport extreme and getting a d-link that has 3 antennas would be better signal to the top floor or if Im going to have these problems no matter what router I have.
I was thinking of a couple of options:
    1) Getting an airport express for the top floor. Would that give a better signal to the mini or other devices on that floor?
    2) Seeing if there is a way of using the Linksys router I already have as an access point for the mini to improve signal to the top floor (mind you that would be g only)
    3) Move the router and modem to the main floor and get the xbox wireless adapter.
    4) Move the router and modem to the main floor and see if I can use the Linksys router as a bridge or access point in place of buying the wireless adapter
I’m really confused and don’t know what to do…
    Any thoughts or ideas?

The primary problem with attempting to wirelessly extend a wireless network is that if a client is not able to pick up a "good" signal nor will the wireless router. With that said, is it possible to run Ethernet between floors? Ideally you would want something like the following:
o Wired or Wireless (w/built-in Ethernet switch) router connected directly to the Internet modem.
o Have this router provide Ethernet connectivity to wall jacks on each floor that you would want network / Internet access.
o Connect a Wireless Access Point (WAP) to each of these wall jacks to provide wireless coverage in that location.
Again, that would be ideal, but may not be something easily accomplished if you won't be able to run Ethernet between floors.
    So to address your questions:
    1) Getting an airport express for the top floor. Would that give a better signal to the mini or other devices on that floor?
I assume that you will keep the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) in the basement ... correct? Again, the problem here is that the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) will see the same signal strength as any wireless client on the 2nd floor. Although it may be able to extend the AEBS and provide a strong signal, the overall bandwidth will be significantly lower because the AX will not "boost" only repeat the bandwidth which it receives.
    2) Seeing if there is a way of using the Linksys router I already have as an access point for the mini to improve signal to the top floor (mind you that would be g only)
It will be highly unlikely that you will be able to extend the AEBS with the Linksys as very few non-AirPort routers are WDS compatible. Only a very few Linksys models are, like the WRT54G & WRT54GL, but at only certain firmware revision levels.
    3) Move the router and modem to the main floor and get the xbox wireless adapter.
This would probably be a better option if you can't go the Ethernet route I mentioned at the beginning of this reply.
    4) Move the router and modem to the main floor and see if I can use the Linksys router as a bridge or access point in place of buying the wireless adapter
    Again, same problem as #2.

  • Having some serious issues with my iPhone and need some advice

I'm going to these two issues which have been occuring with me for the past weeks-
1.) I am facing a problem with my iPhone 5's lightning port or the cable. This started happening all of a sudden; one second my phone is charging, and the other it is not. Even if it is slightly moved from its position, it would stop charging, and further shaking starts it again, so on and so forth. At first I thought the issue might be with my cable, so I asked my friend to bring his lightning cable to my house so we could test that. It happened again- one shake the phone will charge, another shake stops it. (Note that any kind of movement does this, not only shaking) I'm a bit skeptical about his (my friend's) cable too, though- it shows NOT CHARGING on his iPad while it is in fact actually charging. His cable is only 3-4 weeks old though, so this confuses me even more. I think the issue might be with my port, but as of now I cannot draw a valid conclusion to my problem.
2.) The second problem is that I've noticed my battery drains a **** lot faster now- ever since the first issue started. I manage to get my phone charging by placing it very carefully on the table and it charges overnight. However, when I pick it up in the morning, and read some news, it drains from 100% to 99% in ~60 seconds. This never happened before. Before this, it used to be at 100% for at least 10-15 minutes (might be even more). If I reboot my phone, it shows 100% again, but it still drains a lot faster now. I know because I've been using this phone for the past 4 months now, and I know when it drains and when it does nots
Please, help! I need some advice as to how I should approach this problem. My phone is in the warranty period, however, I would like to have an expert's opinion first.

    Hello,
First: I've experienced the same problem with my iPhone 5. I've bought a new charger and it still did the same thing. I went to the Apple Store to get my iPhone checked out and they said that the pins inside my iPhone we're damaged, and I had to get a replacement.

  • I need Information about Grid

    Hello,
The first, i don't speak english very well.... ;)
the company for which work has 3 seats now, but is going to open 5 more.
All these seats are small, and the cost to install Oracle in each one of them is very elevated.
i would like to know to me if Grid Computing can help me centralizing everything in a Seat. The scalability is something very important. and i need have several instances of BD oracle up...
    I need information...
Yo can write me to [email protected]
    Thanks in advance

    Hi.
By seat, I assume you mean site or location.
It's difficult to answer this type of question as it depends on so many factors. Personally, I would always go for the centralized solution. This way you don't need to worry about replication or distribution of data. Those things are always a nightmare.
RAC is great for high availability, and it will allow you to increase your horsepower as and when you need it, but you still need to consider your performance erquierments up front.
Of course, centralization comes with it's own set of problems. Are you going to connect to the central server via the web, VPN, leased line? What happens when the connection is unavailable?
There is just so much to consider...
    Cheers
    Tim...
