Trying to Date Solaris Servers

Hello,
I realize that a funny joke could be made about this (e.g., how can a person date a server?), but assuming we can get past that, I have a list of servers that I would like to identify their manufacture dates (more or less). I have server models and serial numbers. Here is a partial listing:
SUN ENT 420R,
PowerEdge 1855,
SUN ENT 220R,
SUN ENT 420R,
SUN ENT 450,
SUN SUNFIRE T2000,
SUN SUNFIRE V240,
SUN SUNFIRE V480,
SUN SUNFIRE V490,
SUN ULTRA 5
I would grateful for any leads for how to date these machines. Thanks!

Thanks so much for your assistance.
Here are a couple of serial number patterns I am having trouble unraveling:
SUN SPARC M4000 BEF08244D8
SUN ULTRA 5 FW84510301
SUN SUNFIRE 280R 231C5BBF
SUN SUNFIRE 280R 335AD26BB
SUN SUNFIRE 280R 229C56E6
SUN SUNFIRE V210 FM33910006
SUN SUNFIRE V445 0719BD0404
SUN ENT 420R 017H25F9
I'd better stop there.. Thanks for any information!Let's see if I get this right ...
Take the first three numeric digits of the serial and ...
M4000 "0824"= 24th week of 2008 (whereas an "824" would be the 24th week of 1998)
Ultra-5 "845" = 45th week of 1998
SF280R(a) "231" = 31st week of 2002 (and there weren't any 280R's made in 1992)
SF280R(b) "335" = 35th week of 2003
SF280R(c) "229" = 29th week of 2002
SF V210 "339" = 39th week of 2003
SF V445 "0719" = 19th week of 2007 (and not 1997)
E420R "017" = 17th week of 2000
The first one or two alpha characters for each will refer to the factory of assembly. For example, the U-5 came from factory FW (Fremont, Califirnia) and the E420R came from factory H (Newark, California) -- see that link in my first reply.
Most every other remaining character after factory and date codes will be the sequentially created chassis serial. Again, that Ultra 5 was the 10301st one to come off the assembly conveyor belt that week in 1998.
It takes a while for the serial number syntax to sink in but once it starts to make sence, they're easy to read.

  • Espontaneous reboot trying to install solaris 8 on Pentium IV

I been having problems trying to install Solaris 8 for x86 platforms (2002 February edition) on an Intel Pentium IV system. This is the system spec:
    Pentium IV 1.7 GHz
    Intel Board D850 MV
    512 RAM BUS (RIMM)
Maxtor 40 Gb two primary partitions
    CD-ROM: Asus 52x
Already installed OSes: Windows 2000 Advanced Server. First Partition.
Problem: After I boot the PC with the boot diskette, and the boot process asks me for the Solaris CD 1 it asks for to methods. Jumpstar and Step Confirmation (not sure about the exact choises). Neither of both choises worked. When trying to read the Solaris CD 1 disk, it just reboots.
    What should I do?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Before running the b kadb -v command I found some warning and here they are:

  • Data Socket Servers with LV RT

I am trying to use LV RT on an embedded system to communicate with another system that is running LV RT.  I would like to use data socket communications in order to keep the code as simple as possible.  My question is if anyone has had experience with launching a data socket server on a LV RT platform.  Currently I am only aware of windows machines that can be data socket servers.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

  • Precautions to be taken  From Oracle end While Flaring Solaris Servers

    Hi
In the context of moving our Solaris servers to the new location We are flaring our servers. We have Oracle 10g being installed on the servers.
The db would be shutdown before taking the flar and after the restore of the image the DB would be brought up.
All the CRD files would be in the scope for the Flar.
Request you to highlight if there are any issues that could be foreseen during this activity.
    Regards
    Pavan

    Hi Everybody
Thanks for your valuable inputs.Last weekend we had the upgrade for the first group of servers. The mode of upgrade is "Live Upgrade".
    One interesting point here is------
1)Kernel Parameters are automatically ported. No need to change the Kernel parameters explicity using "projmod" or "prctl" commands.
Coming to Relink yes we have followed "Doc-Id-131321.1".
Everything went fine this week and keeping my fingers crossed over the coming weekend.
Having said that, There is an ambiguity over the Backup & Strategy Process, whether i need to take the cold up or hot back up should be fine.
Appreciate your comments on the same.
    Thanks & Regards
    Pavan

  • User Account Authentication across multiple Solaris servers - Best Practice

    Hi,
I am new to Solaris admin and would like to know the best practice/setup for authenticating user accounts across multiple solaris servers.
Currently we have 20 - 30 Solaris 8 & 10 servers which each have their own user accounts setup. I am planning to replace these with a similar number of Solaris 10 servers and would like to centralise the user accounts and their authentication.
I would be grateful for any suggestions on the best setup and any links to tutorials.
    Thanks
    Jools

i would suggest LDAP + kerberos, LDAP for name lookups and krb5 for auth. provides secure auth + extensable directory for users and other apps if needed. plus, it provides a decent spring board to add other unix plats into the mix since this will support any unix/linux/bsd plat. you could integrate this design with a windows AD env if you want as well.
    [http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/features/articles/kerberos_s10.jsp] sol + ldap+ AD
    [http://docs.lucidinteractive.ca/index.php/Solaris_LDAP_client_with_OpenLDAP_server] sol + ldap (openldap)
    [http://aput.net/~jheiss/krbldap/howto.html] sol + ldap + krb5
now these links are all using some diff means, however they should give you some ideas as to whats out there. sol 10 comes with suns ldap server and you can use the krb5 server which comes with it as well. many many diff ways to do this. many many more links out there as welll. these are just a few.

  • Getting an error 'Cannot open Boot device' while trying to install Solaris

    Hi,
We were trying to install Solaris * on a Sun Sparc system and the CD rom drive does not seem to get recognised. When we try booting from cd rom we get an error 'Cannot open boot device' .
This server was up & running and we were trying to remove a hard disk that had failed and modified the vfstab script . After that the system failed to even boot up. So when we tried reinstalling the OS we are running into this problem.
Am new to this technology ...And any help would be greatly appreciated. .....
    Thanks

Cdrom drive must be scsi device 6
I assume you are running < boot cdrom> at the ok prompt
also at the ok prompt run the command <probe-scsi> (without the angled brackets) you need to see the following:
    Target 6
Unit 0 Removable read only device TOSHIBA XM.......bigpileofnumbers
If not, check the cdrom drive and the cdrom inside
    hope this helps
    Alan

  • If i create a stunnel between two solaris servers, will the databus clustering of these two servers operate successfully across this stunneled tcp channel?

we have 2 solaris servers interconnected by a stunnel. will the clustered databus that I establish between these two servers operate successfully on the stunnelized tcp connection?

You indicated the servers didn't come up correctly. Did you run "svcs -xv" on the servers to see if any services are having problems? It is my practice to run this command after rebooting a server to make sure it came up properly and if not, to identify which services have problems which need to be addressed. If you've not done this already, I'd start there. The zones service comes up rather late in the boot process and may not be up properly if there are other problems.

  • Keep getting "not responding" message, extremely slow, have tried rebuilding data base, tried removing and re-installing. Still the same

Do you use McAfee anti-virus software?
    If yes, please read:
    * https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#McAfee
Is this an Imap mail account?
if yes, you can choose to only synchronize the most recent of emails instead of a whole folder.
    see info :
    * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/imap-synchronization#w_configuring-synchronization-and-disk-space-usage
Make sure you compact folders on a regular basis to remove all 'marked as deleted' emails.
Tools -> Account Settings -> Server Settings -> Clean up ("Expunge") Inbox on Exit will compact the Inbox folder when you exit Thunderbird. If you check "Empty Trash on Exit" it will also empty and compact the Trash folder when you exit.

  • Have tried the date time it's good not sure what else to look at and apple care is useless

keep getting error 1202 tried the date time thing they are fine, apple is of no help. I cant purchase song, can't look at wish list or account information and not sure what eles.  any ideas about where I need to look at. I don't have the speedbit vidoe so that aint' it.

I cannot see the damage. But the screening centre has pics showing it is damaged. Apple refuses to cover a physical damage. But the reason the device is damaged could only be coz it had a poor battery life from start. The iPhone 5 is infamous for the same. We all know it. Apple conveniently denies responsibility.
And the Insurance company says it covers only accidental damage. Now how am I to prove an 'accidental' damage ? Unless I lie to them....

  • How do we decide the number of data base servers and application servers ?

    Dear Gurus,
How do we decide the number of data base servers and application servers in BW ?
How does this number help in data load balance and reporting needs ?
Any hard n fast rule in the number of servers ?
    Regards
    Mohan

    Hi Mohan,
Check the number of application server in the T-code SM66.... and also u can check the it in Sm50 on appplication server basiss./.
From Sm37 u can see the application server Push button.. if u click on that also.. u can see the number of application servers in the system..
Get into the individual application server and check how many Dialogue and background WP's are free,,
If u see that the considerable number of WP are free(Waiting for task).. then u can shedule the loads..
If most of the WP are  busy then u need to wait to trigger ur loads to maintain the load balancing..
If one Application server is too busy then u can check the other Application Servers in the systems..
And u can shedule the loads on a specific application sever level as well using the PC..
    Thanks
I hope this is clear to u..
    Assign points if this helps

  • Provisioning multiple Solaris servers, need consistient uid

I will be provisioning users to a number of Solaris servers using Identity Manager. However in order to accomodate some internal applications the user must have the same numeric uid for a particular user on all Solaris servers. The only way I can think of doing this is to create a database table and whenever I create a new user get the next value and use that as the uid.
Anyone else with any suggestions on how to do this? I would have liked to have the first server in the provisioning order simply assign the uid and then use that same uid for the other servres, but I can't find a way to use a value from one provisioned server on another server when they're both being provisioned in the same Identity Manager Save operation.

We had some help setting this up .. this is a rule which returns a unique uid:

  • Monitoring Oracle Virtual Machine for Solaris servers and LDOMs

    Hi all,
could anyone tell me if we can monitor Oracle Virtual Machine for Solaris servers and LDOMs with only Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c, or shall we need to install Ops Center ?
