Update excel cells once placed in indesign

Hi,
Once an excel file has been placed onto an indesign document with  custom cells, how do I change these cells without placing the excel file all over again?
Many thanks

Bob,
Thanks for the reply. Please bear with me since these issues with InDesign/pdfs are new to me.
With reference to your notes above..
1.Since there will be c. 300 pages and probably 200 maps/outlines included, I'd prefer not to open each page file and convert the files and resave (or open the pdf in illustrator and resave).
2. I export the pdf to "Press Quality" what should "compatibility" be
set to?
Also, Under "Output", "color" what should my settings be for:
Color Conversion: No COlor conversion, COnvert to Destination or COnvert to Destination (preserve color numbers).
If I was printing four-color process I would choose my "Working CMYK" or use a profile supplied by my printer.
Since my goal is to be one color black - what do I set "Color Conversion" to??
Destination - ???
Profile Inclusion Policy - ??
Once Exported, I reopen the file with Acrobat reader and how do I convert the colors?? Under Tools>Print Production there is an option to convert colors but am unsure of the steps to convert process colors to one-color blacks having never done this before.
3. Instead of Export, I can print to postscript by selecting the printer as Adobe Pdf and under output/color select "Composite gray" to render a one-color file, correct? I think this may be my easiest option unless there are hidden issues with it :)
If I have specific job option pdf settings from my printer, where do I check that these are enabled if I print to adobe pdf.
Any steps will be helpful, especially ones that will export the whole book at once and still not give my printer a headache. I will also contact my provider and discuss it with them, but prefer to educate myself first.
Thanks for taking the time and sharing your knowledge..

  • Eps images looking pixelated when placed in Indesign

    I am creating a catalogue. The images I am using are eps files.
    In some instances the image once placed into Indesign come out completely or partly pixelated.
    I have checked the display performance and it is on high quality. I am also placing the image not copy and pasting.
    What do I need to do to fix the problem?

    I don't know what PDF profile you exported to, but try PDF/X-4 and see if it results in a better PDF.
    It sounds like the AI file could have either transparency and is being flattened or the PDF profile used to export is flattening the PDF gradient itself. The white lines...do they get larger as you zoom in? If not, they are stitching lines and usually do not print.

  • Updating Excel Links In InDesign

    Here is the scenario: I have imported Excel data in to an InDesign CS5.5 document. I then apply cell styles and paragraph styles to that table's cell(s). When the data in the Excel file is changed, I update the links in the InDesign 'Links' window just as one would do if an EPS, PSD or TIFF file had changed.
    My problem is that when I update the linked data, I lose all of my text formatting. InDesign changes all the text within the linked cells to the 'basic' character style setting. I'm using six different paragraph and cell styles.
    I've tried changing every aspect of the original import dialog box, every checkbox of cells tyles, paragraph styles, table styles, character styles, but I cannot avoid the reformatting of the text after it is updated. I can easily re-apply the paragraph styles to the tables and/or cells after the update of the Excel linked data, but I am trying to solve his problem in the most 'hands-free' way possible.
    I've tried a demo of 'DataLinker' by Teacup Software and I couldn't get that to work. It seems as though it is really is meant for more high-end applications.
    Does anyone have any ideas? If I can't get this to work within InDesign, I either have to watch for it to be remedied in CS6, or hire it out to someone who can script it.
    TIA for any help at all.

    Mr. Levine,
    Thanks so much! I did not have the paragrph styles set inside the cell styules. And when I did, eureka, it worked!
    I should buy you lunch! short of that, you have my compliments and thank yous!
    This is a BIG load off of my mind!

  • How to update existing excel cell by dropdown value in ole programm

    hi guys,
    i am updating excel sheet using ole program, i stuck in point where i want to fill an excel cell by selecting dropdown value from list,
    how it  can be achieve.

    I don't think it is possible to refer to cell in excel using jdbc, since jdbc is intended to communicate with mostly database in generic way. So you have to use queryStrings to update or retive cell info.
    The only way to access them by cell name is possibly by using some third party tools.

  • Help needed with referencing single Excel cells and formatting resulting text

    In InDesign CS5 I am putting together a 20pp catalogue of about 200 products. The plan is to have the product information, SKU code, quantity etc fixed, but have the prices (there are two i.e. pack price and individual price) being linked to an Excel spreadsheet. This is so that the prices can be updated in the Excel file and the InDesign file will pull the new prices through. In case you are wondering why I don't pull the whole set of information through, this is because there are a lot of copywriting changes done to the information once it's in InDesign - it's only going to be the prices that will be updated.
    I am planning on having two single cell tables in their own text frame, duly formatted with cell style, table style and paragraph style for the two price variables. This I am then going to have to repeat 200 times making sure I link to the next row down in Excel. This is going to be a hideous task but I see know way of modifying the cell in InDesign to point it to the next row in Excel. That's my first problem.
    My second problem is this. In the Excel sheet, the prices are formatted as UK currency and are therefore like this...
    £2.00
    £0.40
    £1.43
    £9.99
    £0.99
    £0.09
    What I will require is once I import that data (and refresh the data via a newly saved Excel file) is that the prices end up like this...
    £2.00
    40p
    £1.43
    £9.99
    99p
    9p
    So if the value is lower than £1.00 it needs a trailing 'p' added  and the leading zero and '£' sign stripped off. If the value is lower than £0.10 it also needs the zero after the decimal point stripping off.
    Then formatting wise, the '£' sign needs to be superscripted and the same for the 'p'. This I am assuming could be done via GREP?
    In summary, can anyone help with the first task of referecing the Excel cells on a cell by cell basis, given that it is the same cell column each time, but the next row down, and also point me in the right direction of the price formattting issues.
    Any help will be gratefully received.

    I would do this:
    Create on line with the formatting.
    Export as InDesign tagged text (TXT)
    Read out these tags
    In Excel exists a function to connect text from several cells and predfined text, there connect the content from cells with the paragraph styling tags. Do it in a seperate sheet. (Better would be to use a database like Access, there you can link your Excel sheet).
    Export this sheet as txt file
    Place this sheet as tagged text (there is an option in one of the sialog boxes).
    In preferences  < file handling you can specify that Tablecalculation Sheets and text is not embedded but linked, turn it on.

  • VBA code to update Excel Data in sharePoint list

    hi Team,
    I have excel sheet created having data. I need to upload it in sharepoint List.
    Please provide me VBA code for the same.

    Please try this.
    Sub UpdateSpecificCells()
    'If nobody has the file checked out
    If Workbooks.CanCheckOut("http://excel-pc:43231/Shared Documents/ExcelList.xlsb") = True Then
    Application.DisplayAlerts = False
    'Open the file on the SharePoint server
    Workbooks.Open Filename:="http://excel-pc:43231/Shared Documents/ExcelList.xlsb", UpdateLinks:=xlUpdateLinksNever
    ActiveSheet.Cells(2, 7).Value = 100
    ActiveSheet.Cells(3, 7).Value = 200
    ActiveSheet.Cells(4, 7).Value = 300
    'Close the workbook
    Workbooks("ExcelList.xlsb").Save
    Workbooks("ExcelList.xlsb").Close
    End If
    End Sub
    I haven't used SharePoint in many years, and I can't test that code now, but I've used that before to update Excel files in SharePoint.
    Knowledge is the only thing that I can give you, and still retain, and we are both better off for it.

    Sure. The first screen shot is the PDF after it's placed in InDesign. The second one is the PDF.

    Hi,
    Sorry to inform you that these new features are specific to cloud Excel Web App in both SkyDrive and Office365. There is no update available for on-premise Excel Web Apps installed locally

  • Convert contents of a formatted excel cell to HTML format

    Hi All,
    Background: I am writing a script that uploads some test cases written in excel into Quality Center. For those who are familiar with the QC Excel Addin, this script would do a pretty similar job except for reducing
    the steps involved. I'm using Office 2007 running on Win 7 Pro.
    Need: I have a situation where the contents of a formatted excel cell need to be converted to HTML tags representing the same formattin in the excel cell. For example a cell containg the text: "Verify
    if help topics in Macro section are
    hyperlinked" should be converted to
    <html><b>Verify</b> if help topics in <u>Macro section</u> are <i>hyperlinked</i></html>
    Question: Is there an inbuilt function in Excel/VBAn accomplish this? Or is a macro required? Any other ideas to accomplish this?
    Note: Whatever used for converting (an inbuilt function or a macro) should support new line characters and colors.
    Any help or redirection to solutions is appreciated.
    Thanks, John.

    Here is the function I wrote. This handles the conversion character by character.

    chrCol = "NONE"
    htmlTxt = "<html>"
    chrCount = myCell.Characters.Count
    For i = 1 To chrCount
    With myCell.Characters(i, 1)
    If (.Font.Color) Then
    chrCol = fnGetCol(.Font.Color)
    If Not colTagOn Then

  • How to find out ppi of pdf placed in indesign

    When I "place" a jpeg in InDesign, I can find out its PPI using the Links tab on the right hand side of the screen. However, when I place a pdf in InDesign, the ppi is not listed. How can I find out the ppi of pdf images placed in InDesign? I ask because I need to make sure the image quality is at least 300 ppi for printing purposes.

    PDF files are not images. They are usually containers for a variety of objects—text, images of various resolutions and color spaces, and, for interactive PDFs, objects like video, sounds, or buttons.
    To examine a PDF file you need to open it in Acrobat Pro. Use the Print Production tools, especially the Output Preview panel. In that panel, you can view the resolution(s), color space(s) and properties of objects in the PDF.

    hi everyone,
    With the new version of photoshop its possible to link smart objects into a psd which is great. The main psd housing the smart object is then dropped into indesign cc 2014. Is it possible to collect the graphics used in the indesign file, but also collect the linked smart object in the photoshop file?.
    I have done a quick test, but only the image placed in indesign is collected. Maybe there is a script or a feature I've missed when collecting artwork from indesign.
    thanks

    but i don't want this.
    Place it pixel exact! Resampling means the image is placed at sub-pixel values. Aside from that you would also get softness if the image is not properly converted to the target color space and automatic conversion creates mix colors whose individual components blend differently with neighboring pixels, which in part is simply an artifact of on-screen simulation. In any case, you will only be able to get a proper barcode in CMYK/ Duotone/ Multichannel modes, where you can make sure it appears on the spot black ink separation so it does not get halftoned and loses its sharpness again. ideally it would even be native vector data...
