10.2.0.4 to 11gR2 with RAC, ASM and replication

I have two systems needing to be upgraded. These two systems are both a 2-node RAC on solaris 64 bit using ASM. We use multi-master replication to keep the two systems in sync.
One goal is to have little or no downtime... ( a few minutes might be ok).
One thing that could possibly happen is that we are getting a new hardware to host one of the system and it could already have 11gR2 on it so it might just be a simple export/import. but for the other system in the replication scheme i'd need to get that upgraded.
Can i use replication two keep my downtime to a minimum? for instance, i could have replication on one system queueing up the changes. Once the other system is upgraded turn it back on and get the two systems synced up via replication. So kinda of like this..
system 1 with 10g
system 2 with 10g (current users pointing here)
introduce new system with 11g to replace system 1.
can the changes queued up on system 2 then get propogated to the new 11g system?
and if yes can i then switch users over to the new 11g system, upgrade system 2, then propogate the changes queued up in the new 11g system to the upgraded system 2?
any other advice would be helpful. I haven't seen anything about how replication is effected with the upgrade.
thanks...

  • Cross - Post help Please with RAC/ASM on 2nd node

    Hi
I originally posted this in the DB Installation area, but after getting a better feel for the Forums, it probably should have been posted here.

    11gR2 2 node RAC/ASM hanging
    "Hi,
I am attempting to install 11gR2 on two nodes.
Things seem to be going quite well from the first node, including running of root.sh
On the second node however, when running root.sh it hangs at this point :

  • 11gR2 RAC, ASM and database

    Hi all,
I've installed 11gR2 RAC and database on Linux OEL 5.4. Everything seems Ok, I'm able to connect from client using SCAN, and load balancing works well, but "crs_stat -t" shows up some OFFLINE services, like gsd and oc4j.
Is this normal ? If yes, why it's so ? If not, what should I do to solve the problem ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Antoine

    Thanks for your answer.
Those services are disabled, and I've found this one on MOS FAQs :
With Oracle Clusterware 11g Release 2, the GSD resource will be disabled by default. You only need to enable this resource if you are running Oracle 9i RAC in the cluster.

  • RAC,  ASM and Dataguard compatibility

We have a Dataguard setup with 3 node RAC. The primary is a 3 node RAC but the standby is a single instance. The ASM version is 10.1. Currently we have switchover the roles.
Can upgrade the ASM to 10.2 on standby then make it primary?
All I want to know is if we can have ASM 10.2 on primary and ASM 10.1 on physical standby?

The note for latest ASM [ 10.2  ] indicates a level of backward compatibility I believe
What version is the database ?

  • Infrastructure for installing advanced features like RAC, ASM and DataGuard

I have been working in Oracle for an year now and would like to start working on advanced features like ASM, DataGuard and RAC. Currently I use a 32bit laptop with OEL6.3 installed with 4GB RAM. Is this system sufficient to install and practice  ASM, DataGuard and RAC. To be more specific I would like to know whether 32bit would suffice OR I need a 64bit  system for this?

I'd say you are pushing it.
These features are usually used in multi-server environments.
You could work with multiple VM's, but 4 GB sounds very limited.
I had a quick look at introduction to the Data Guard Hands On Lab, and it seems it's hosted in the Amazon Cloud.

  • ASM over HA SAN with FC-Switches and replication

    Hello,
we have to install our first RAC and we have no idea how to handle shared storage with the requirement of high availability.
E.g. we have a HA SAN with two FC-Switches and a master-/slave storage configuration - is ASM able to manage this?
Can ASM manage disks in physically separated hardware (e.g. two disk arrays in different rooms) and mirror and striping over it?
Can the disks be of different types: e. g. disc array and normal discs and grouped together?
    Any help is appreciated.
    kind regards

  • Poor WAAS Performance with Veeam Backup and Replication

I have two wae-574's doing inline interception on a T1 line.  I'm doing Veeam replication across that T1 Line (or attempting to).  It appears that I'm getting roughly zero acceleration during the veeam jobs and it doesn't make much sense why.  Other applications are being accelerated.  The WAN to LAN statistics never jump over 1.5 megabit when running the job.  I'm not sure what to do at this point.
10.30.1.44 is my Veeam Box.  It's a Virtual Machine on the source side.  I've run the show stat command on the remote waas unit.
Veeam is setup to use appliance mode, with no compression (thinking the WAAS would do the magic).
    RemoteCiscoWaas#show stat con | include 30.1.44

    Any Ideas?
    Thanks..

It works now! I had to set the VMware-VMconsole policy to full acceleration on each WAAS device involved in the Veeam traffic (thanks for the help on the veeam forum).  Veeam uses port 902 in network mode for replication which was already assigned to a policy but set to TFO only as it's generally just console traffic.  Seeing 12 Megabit peaks from a T-1 Line.. Nice!

  • Oracle OEM issue with RAC Database

We're have Grid Control 11g on Linux. The issue that I've is when trying to access the "Top Activity" screen for node 1 of a 2-node RAC cluster. The general "Performance" tab displays, but the graphs will not get past "Loading". Furthermore, when you click "Top Activity", the page displays but with no graph and the following error:
ORA-12504-TNS:listener was not given the SID in CONNECT_DATA
Access to the screens which aggregate all instances or to node 2 specifically seems to work properly. This is case whether the SCAN listener is running on either node.
We have a 2-node RAC 11gR2 cluster w/ ASM and 3 SCAN listener. This is HP-UX
Enterprise Manager 11g is being run from another host, this is RHEL5

    bcm@bcm-laptop:~$ oerr ora 12504

  • PRD with RAC and DR with non-rac datagaurd

Is it possible to implement production with RAC database and DR with non-rac datagaurd.
if yes, how does the log shipping happening from different nodes of RAC to one DR node?
    Can anybody answer please?
    Thanks

There is also a very good MAA whitepaper on this szenario:

  • Creating Standby for RAC ASM database using RMAN

We are having a Primary Site of 3-Node RAC ASM and we takes daily RMAN backup with the following script
    run
    allocate channel c1 device type disk format 'g:\rmanbackup\%U';
    backup database;
    backup archivelog from time 'trunc(sysdate-1)' until time 'sysdate';
We have configured 3-Node RAC Cluster in Standby site. We have copied the rman backup folder to one of the Nodes in the Standby site.
Request your help to restore the RMAN backup. The backup size is around 200GB. We do not know how to use DUPLICATE DUPICATE option in RMAN as if it is restoring from the Primary Location, then transferring 200GB over the network will not be possible.
We need a solution to restore it directly from the Backup folder available in the DR Server. We are not using catalog.
    OS : Windows IA 64-bit
    RDBMS : Oracle 10.2.0.4
    Storage : ASM
DB Nodes at Primary Site, Node1, Node2, Node3
    DB instances at primary site : ORCL1, ORCL2, ORCL3
DB Nodes at Standby Site, Node101, Node102, Node103
    DB instances at Standby site : ORCL1, ORCL2, ORCL3
DB Name : ORCL on both the sites.

When you create the standby, you can use catalogued backups, stored somewhere local to your standby servers.
For that, they need to be copied to the standby server, or taken from production there, and after restoring the standby controlfile on the standby server, use rman to catalogue the backups to be used. Then, you can use DUPLICATE... and it will be reading your local backup files.
The directory g:\rmanbackup of your rman script is local to standby servers ?
The docs for this have a lot of details: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/rcmbackp.htm

  • Step by Step RAC 11GR2 with Grid Infrastructure on Solaris installation

    Y'ello All,
Please I need documentation for RAC 11GR2 with Grid Infrastructure on Solaris installation urgently.
Thany you very much for your support
    BR,

What type of shared storage will you be using?
    Properly configure DNS
    Properly configure /etc/hosts files
    Properly configure SCAN
Properly configure SHARED storage (Preferably ASM - "raw" devices) - make sure you partition the disk devices to "skip" the first 1MB of the device)
BEFORE installation, confirm grid-owner and oracle-rdbms-owner can read AND write to these shared devices from ALL nodes. Permissions must be set to <grid-owner:<grid+oracle shared group> (grid:oinstall where oracle is also in the oinstall group)
Properly configure ssh password-less connections for both GRID-owner AND oracle-rdbms-owner.
    IP addresses required
3 SCAN addresses that point to myhost-scan.mydomain.tld in a round-robin fashion
    PER NODE:
    1 public IP address
    1 virtual IP address
1 interconnect IP address should be iin /etc/hosts ONLY - Non-routable and not reachable via the public interface. DO NOT use CROSSOVER cable.
Interconnect should be on a DEDICATED INTERCONNECT switch.
As for the SHARED storage, the LUNS/Devices can be "carved" out on your SAN by your SAN admin. MAKE SURE that ALL devices in a given diskgroup are EQUAL size. (ie - DATA000=250GB/each, DATA001 500GB/each etc)
The installation guide gives a lot of directions on PRE-REQUISITES. Follow them. And remember, since you are new to this, you may install this several times before you get it the way you need it to be. Even installing MANY RAC clusters on multiple platforms, I still install it 2-3 times. Generally because the SA has forgotten some pre-req step.

  • Problems with RAC and XA: Fallback

    Hello,
we are seing problems with RAC and XA (Tuxedo 11, DB 11.2), specifically encountering "ORA-24798: cannot resume the distributed transaction branch on another instance".
The first scenario relates to fallback after a RAC node failure. There are two servers, S1 and S2. S1 makes an ATMI call to S2. Both servers are in the same Tuxedo group, using TMS_ORA. RAC is set up for failover (BASIC), no load balancing.
    The sequence is:
    - S1 and S2 are connected to the same RAC node n1. All is well.
    - RAC node n1 fails. S1, S2 and the TMS_ORA all fail over to RAC node n2. After the failover has happened, all is well.
    - RAC node n1 recovers. All is still well (as there is no automatic fallback).
    - S1 (or S2) is restarted (either intentionally or because of a crash). Since n1 is up again, S1 connects to n1. Now we get ORA-24798. Permanently.
S1 is connected to n1 and S2 is connected to n2. Since both are in the same group, both use the same XA transaction branch. When called, S2 attempts to JOIN the transaction branch that S1 started. But the DB (11.2) does not allow the same branch to span more than one node. Hence the ORA-24798.
This seems to be a severe limitation in the combination of Tuxedo, XA and RAC. It basically means we still have to use DTP services, even with Tuxedo 11 and DB 11.2. Or are we missing something?
We could put S1 and S2 into different groups, but that seems to be inefficient, and not practical for a real application (10s of servers).
I am extrapolating from this that RAC load balancing would also not work, as S1 and S2 could be connected to different RAC nodes.
    Roger

    Roger,
When using an external transaction manager such as Tuxedo you should still declare Oracle services as DTP services when using Oracle Database 11g. The Tuxedo documentation is not clear about this. The relevant 11gR2 RAC documentation is at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/rac.112/e16795/hafeats.htm and states
"An XA transaction can span Oracle RAC instances by default, allowing any application that uses the Oracle XA library to take full advantage of the Oracle RAC environment to enhance the availability and scalability of the application.
"GTXn background processes support global (XA) transactions in an Oracle RAC environment. The GLOBAL_TXN_PROCESSES initialization parameter, which is set to 1 by default, specifies the initial number of GTXn background processes for each Oracle RAC instance. Use the default value for this parameter clusterwide to allow distributed transactions to span multiple Oracle RAC instances. Using the default value allows the units of work performed across these Oracle RAC instances to share resources and act as a single transaction (that is, the units of work are tightly coupled). It also allows 2PC requests to be sent to any node in the cluster.
"Before Release 11.1, the way to achieve tight coupling in Oracle RAC was to use Distributed Transaction Processing (DTP) services, that is, services whose cardinality (one) ensured that all tightly-coupled branches landed on the same instance—regardless of whether load balancing was enabled. Tightly coupled XA transactions no longer require the special type of singleton services to be deployed on Oracle RAC databases if the XA application does not join or resume XA transaction branches. XA transactions are transparently supported on Oracle RAC databases with any type of service configuration.
A"n external transaction manager, such as Oracle Services for Microsoft Transaction Server (OraMTS), coordinates DTP/XA transactions. However, an internal Oracle transaction manager coordinates distributed SQL transactions. Both DTP/XA and distributed SQL transactions must use the DTP service in Oracle RAC."
This issue came up earlier this year in another newsgroup thread at https://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2165803

  • 11.2.0.3 RAC ASM Pri with Normal FileSys Active Standby Post Failover

The architecture consist of two node rac asm primary and one normal filesystem active standby all on Oracle 11gR2 11.2.0.3. With basic Broker Configuration.
Performed a managed broker switchover and not the Normal Filesystem has the primary role and the standby consist of the two node asm rac. I want to switchback, i.e., Former Primary -> Primary Role and Former Standby -> Standby Role.
However my broker contains the following:
    DGMGRL> show configuration verbose;
    Configuration - DG_PRI_CFG

    I've found a recommendation to increase the value of FastStartFailoverThreshold='90';
Though I continue to encounter the above configuration error.
    Recommendations are appreciated!

We are planning to have HA for the GG process - If one node goes down we have to start processing from the second Node. - We are planning to have a shared file system for GG software - which will have all the metadata required shared across nodes - Can we use the RAC virtual IP for the pump process to ship the trail files - If one node goes down VIP fails over to the other node and we will have the trail files over there - Is it a supported config ?
