Hi all
since i updated to 10.4.7 an iDisk window pops up whenever i login, connect to the internet, or wake the computer from sleep.

  • Application defaults window annoyance

Hi everyone, since installing the FCS2 suite I have had the most annoying problem. The Application defaults window keeps appearing multiple times on startup, also when telling the app to hide, and sometimes on quit.
This happens regardless of wether the 'show on startup' tickbox is ticked or not.
The only logical thing I can think of is that DVDSP has a problem with it's preferences.
    Anybody experiencing similar?

  • ITunes on Windows annoyance

Everytime I use iTunes, the process "apple mobile device helper" opens as well and takes up 15 MB of RAM (on top of the 50+ iTunes already uses). Is there a way to stop this from happening? I don't have any apple mobile device and I've disabled the process via services.msc - hasn't stopped it.

Don't just stop the service, go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and totally delete it from your PC.
You only need it if you've an iPhone or iTouch:

  • Link to file on iDisk??

My husband's new .mac website has a link to a 97 MB pdf full of photos. It kept failing to upload when we linked to it in iWeb and uploaded the iWeb site---the pages would all load, but not the pdf despite hours of spinning beachballs.
As a workaround, I used my computer's faster connexion to upload the pdf to the Public Folder of his iDisk. That worked, the pdf is there. But now, how do we put a link to it in the iWeb site?
I tried dragging the icon from the online iDisk window onto the iWeb page, and an anonymous white square did appear but it doesn't seem to be a link to anything, although I suppose to be absolutely sure of that I'd have to upload the site again and test it. I did open the Inspector>Link in iWeb while the little white square was selected, and it did not have the link box checked. If I check the link box in the Inspector, of course I get the dialog asking me to locate what it is we want to link to.
I tried control-clicking on the icon in the iDisk window to see if it would give me some sort of url but no.

You can also use the original Homepage style URL for files in your Public (or Music and Movies) folders.
Instead of the idisk.mac.com style you would use homepage.mac.com
The syntax requires a period (.) and a capital P for public.
    An example:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/.Public/RedneckTexasChristmas.qtl
Using the Public folder makes a great way to email just links to files. The also automatically update in any FileSharing.html file used by HomePage.
Upload once and use in dozens of places or pages.

  • Where is the airport icon in Windows?

On any Apple computer with Airport, there is an Airport status icon menulet. Those of us longsuffering dialup users with original AEBSs equipped with the dialup modem option are used to clicking on that icon and selecting the "connect" submenu that appears next to the wireless network name, then we're off and running with a 3 or 4 kbps bandwidth (yes that's about 1000 times slower than cable or DSL).
On my Windows laptop, no such icon appears on the closest thing to Apple's menulet area - the system tray. So there's no way of telling my AEBS I'd like to connect to the Internet, and would you please dial my ISP's number now.
I can find nothing appropriate to download from Apple. Of course I have all the other relevant Windows equivalents including Airport Utility, but these programs don't tell my AEBS to dial.
No I can't set it to "connect automatically" since it would connect all the time and I'd never have a voice phone available.
    What am I missing here?

Just add this to the expansive list of Windows annoyances.

  • Idisk sync

My idisk continues to syn and won't stop. I have the setting on manually but it syncs automatically, anyway. Curiously , the sync wheel is always spinning in the Finder sidebar but not in the toolbar. At the bottom of the idisk window it continuously says, "synching disk, checking items".
    Any ideas?

  • I have questions about iDisk

I'm so sorry if this topic doesn't fit in this room.
When I click "iDisk", a message, 'the volume for "iDisk" cannot be found', keeps showing. Is that a bad sign? what can i do to restore "iDisk" to its original condition?
    Thank you.

    Hello,
Open System Preferences/.Mac/iDisk. When you are in the iDisk window, it should show the amount of storage you have. Now, Quit System Preferences and see if the iDisk icon mounts on your Desktop.
Also, this from the Apple Help Menu iDisk Library:
Opening your iDisk using Mac OS X
You need to open your iDisk to copy files to or from it.
    To open your iDisk:
If you're using Mac OS X version 10.3 or later, choose Go >iDisk, and then choose My iDisk from the submenu. You can also create a copy of your iDisk on your computer so you can make changes to it at any time, even when you're not connected to the Internet. For more information, see the topic "Using iDisk with Mac OS X version 10.3."
If you're using a version of Mac OS X earlier than 10.3, choose Go > iDisk.
If you use Mac OS X, you can click iDisk in a Finder window toolbar. (If you don't see iDisk in the toolbar, you can choose Customize Toolbar from the Finder's View menu and add it.) You can also access your iDisk folders directly from the Save or Open dialog in any Mac OS X (but not Classic) application.
If your iDisk seems to open too slowly, see the topic "My iDisk folders are slow to open." After you open your iDisk in Mac OS X, it's available until you disconnect it or shut down your computer.

  • How can I cancel span class="text" ?

I've been working on a web page, and I've spent much of my
    time deleting
<span class="text">, along with the closing
    </span> tag. Dreamweaver is
inserting them automatically. Is there some way to turn this
    feature off?
    Thanks.

That's how I used to insert apostrophes. I just visually
    selected the
character that looks like an apostrophe - &#8217; - and
    used it in all
my articles. But a member of this newsgroup recently informed
    me that
    &#8217; isn't an apostrophe - it's a single right quote
    (apparently
    designed to complement &#8216;.
I then asked what code DOES constitute an apostrophe, and my
understanding is that there is no code for an apostrophe.
    Apparently, an
apostrophe is represented by a single slanted mark that looks
    like
    something like an apostrophe.
I just tried to copy one from one of my web pages to this
    e-mail without
success until I copied it in code view: ’
I don't know what it will look like once I send this message,
    but here
it is again to the left of a "stick-figure" apostrophe I
    created by
simply pushing a key on my keyboard:
Funny thing is, I used to work hard at tracking those things
    down and
deleting them. I thought they were Windows annoyances or
    something
similar. As I recall, I couldn't do a proper search and
    replace for them
in Dreamweaver on my PC; I had to copy the entire article
    into Notepad.
    Weird.
Anyway, I asked some related questions on another forum and
    came away
with the impression that you cannot insert proper apostrophes
    with
Dreamweaver, nor did I figure out how to do it in any other
    software
program. Pretty amazing, but I can only assume other writers
    do what I
did - grab a good apostrophe on the Internet and copy and
    paste it in
    all their work.
I was going to ask another question: How does one create
    stylized, or
literary apostrophes that gracefully curve as you increase
    the size of
your text? I could have sworn &#8217; did take on a
    curved appearance as
    it increases in size.
However, I just pasted it alongside one of those simple
    slanted
apostrophes with no numerical code, then increased the text
    size in my
browser and see no difference. Neither one looks especially
    cool.
Honestly, all this special character stuff ranks with SQL
    injection as
one of web design's biggest mysteries. ;)

  • The never-ending iWeb issues...

So I've officially had it up to the back teeth with iWeb screwing up my website....
I'm constantly getting the error message:
"iWeb couldn’t connect to MobileMe. Make sure your Internet connection works and try again"
I am connected, so I'm completely baffled and annoyed by this. I totally reloaded my site last weekend, it took ages as it's a podcast site with a fair amount of audio. I hoped by doing the "Publish All to MobileMe" that'd it'd refresh everything and I'd have no more hassles updating. Wrong.
I've followed the advice of this site:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7751904#7751904
and opened an iDisk window in Finder first, that doesn't work.
I've reverted to uploaded the updated files to my iDisk via Transmit, but that's a serious pain in the butt and a time waster. iWeb is meant to do it automatically and "1-click", but iWeb and MobileMe seems to be just serious pieces of crap at the moment. Yay, they've given us three months free subscription, I don't care! I'd rather it just worked. Isn't that meant to be Apple's motto? It just works!
I'm already ticked that I have to convert my mp3's to VBR files to stop the OCD iWeb compulsively converting them to .mov's. It strikes me that Apple just seriously doesn't give a stuff at the moment.
So.... When will iWeb and MobileMe "Just Work" again? When will posting my podcasts be simple again?
Anyone else having repetitive issues with this that other 'fixes' don't resolve?

Try the fix reported in this article. Even though it's for an email problem it helped others in publishing:
    Source: http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/mobileme/index.html#d30jul2008
    Page Title: MobileMe
    Date: Wednesday, July 30, 2008 9:06:25 AM
    Jim Oase
After waiting a day for the rolling restore to happen, I called AppleCare because Apple had sent an email saying my service was back, and it wasn't. I still could send and not receive using Mail.
Here is what fixed it. Go to MobileMe (terrible name) in System Preferences, log out. Then enter a garbage name and password and try to log in. This apparently clears the MobileMe preferences. Then enter your real UserName and PassWord. For me this was lights on.
I am left wondering how long ago I could have had email had I known this preference reset scheme.
Log into another account on your Mac, log into your MobileMe account via the System/MobileMe preference pane, open iWeb and create a small test site and try to publish it. Report back on the success or lack thereof.

  • Links to site come up "can't find the iweb page you've requested..."

    hi-
i was able to successfully republish my updated website (thru mobile me). it was originally published thru .mac last year before .mac changed to mobile me. however, i noticed that my web address does not have "mobile me" in the title as in some of the other websites that i've check out on the boards here. i wonder if that's a problem because when i've e-mailed links (by dragging the address or even copy & paste) to my updated website, the links don't work. it goes to a mac page that says "we're sorry but we can't find the iWeb page you've requested..." however, if i go thru a search engine (entering the first couple words of my site title), the website comes up fine. also, if i type in the full address manually in an e-mail, the link works. the problem seems to be in the dragging of the address directly from the site. are these things related? my website address is: http://www.hale-o-lani-aloha.com. (feel free to critique the site if you have any opinions about it)
    thanks.

    Deona,
Here's another post that might prove useful to you, from the iWeb06 forum. This may help you in the future when you want to update your site:
Because your site is already up on the .Mac server, I would never engage in publishing the entire site again; unless, of course, you just rebuilt the whole thing. Note which pages you made changes to, and publish your site to a folder. Double-click this folder on your desktop, and open the window in column view. Navigate to the Page_files, and the Page.html.
With the Finder window open that is showing your site, Command+N. Another Finder window will open. In this window, navigate to the same files on your iDisk, again, using the Go menu in Finder:
    Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/SiteFolder/Page_files(page.html)
From the iDisk Finder window, drag the Page_files/page.html of the pages that you made changes to to the trash. Now, from the other window, the window which shows your site in the published folder, drag these same files into the iDisk window, placing them in the same SiteFolder directory from which you dragged files to the trash. If you created a new page, you will need to also replace all other Page_files/page.html files which link to new page(s).
What you have just done is replace only the changed files. Because the .Mac slideshow assets are already uploaded, you should not have lost the .Mac slideshow for your photo's pages. Sometimes, it can even get simpler....as an example, I have a site that contains numerous .pdf files. With these, I don't even touch the Page_files/page.html files; I simple go into the Page_files folder and replace the old .pdf file with the new, updated one. Obviously the files are named exactly the same.
This is the best way for you to update your existing site on .Mac. You might also take a look at the ftp client, "Transmit". It works well with .Mac, with the exception that you must use the "Publish to a folder" command in iWeb.

  • Gradually choppier audio until I restart?

I experienced this problem under Lion, and upgrading to 10.8.2 hasn't fixed it:
The longer I leave my Mac running without a restart, the choppier my audio performance gets. I'm talking Logic, I'm talking Spotify, I'm talking any audio at all. Freshly restarted, it's absolutely fine, but from anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour after restarting, the audio begins becoming more and more choppy. Sometimes it'll come on suddenly, sometimes it'll gradually get worse over an hour or so. Either way, the audio being recorded suffers from the same choppiness, so if I play something back that was recorded choppily after a restart, it remains choppy.
I have a Focusrite Saffire PRO 14 (Firewire) audio interface, but I've been through some stuff with their support and have completely removed the Saffire (hardware, software, everything), and the issue is still occurring with the built-in speakers and microphone on my iMac (which is a 27" i7 2.93GHz model, with 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, from early 2011).
I've tried creating a new user account, which has not solved the issue, it occurs on the new account, too. I've also tried trashing all audio-related preferences and plists, and resetting the PRAM and SMC. I've looked for weird processes in Activity Monitor and haven't found anything suspicious or sucking up excessive amounts of CPU or RAM.
Any ideas what's happening here? How can I fix the issue? I really don't want to have to completely wipe the machine clean and re-install everything if possible, that's one of those old Windows annoyances I'd left behind..

    Again, to the top?

  • W520 fan plusing noise every 5 seconds

    Hi,
I have the same Problem with my new W520 (4282-W17). The fan makes irregularly (a couple of secounds, maybe 5-10 sec) a pulsing/whining noise (like spinning up and one secound later spinning down again).
    I realized the noise after updating the BIOS with a Boot-CD from 1.21 to 1.24 (8BET44WW, BIOS says it is 1.24 but Driver-Matrix shows 1.25) and performing a Windows 7 x64 Clean-Install.
I would love to see this annoying bug to be fixed. Thanks!
EDIT: Is is definitly the fan, because I installed a SSD
edit note:- edit subject to match issue.

here is more info about the issue:
Bug: Fan control loop pulses the fan in an annoying pattern
        Severity: low
        Linux annoyance level: severe
        Windows annoyance level: severe
Fix: available from IBM, but incorrectly fixed on some models. Unofficial fix available for firmware hackers.
Workaround: A software workaround is available using an ACPI fan control script, but this overrides the embedded controller's fan control algorithm.
Information: thinkpads.com forum thread 1, thinkpads.com forum thread 2, Problem with fan noise
        Models affected:
            TP-1R (T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p): fixed by firmware 1RHT70WW (3.03) and later
            TP-1Y, TP-70, TP-76 (T43, T43p, R52): IBM provided a broken firmware fix, so they are all affected
            other newer models: unknown status
The fan control loop will vary the fan speed quite a lot, in a very annoying pattern. The broken fix on the T43/R52 firmware causes very loud and annoying pulses every 30s.
People have reportedly returned ThinkPads because of this bug.

  • 4.8 problems

Just wondering if anyone has had any problems with 4.8 update. Since i did this on Halloween i have a very difficult time getting into work e-mail using both Firefox and Safari.
    Thanks,
    MTF

Update and work-around: I try to log into iDisk at least a half hour before anticipated need to upload any files. The process of having the iDisk window appear and, after clicking "Sites" getting actual folders to appear, remains much slower than in 10.4.7 (typically a half hour).
After dragging a file from mini's drive to folder in iDisk, the process or preparing to transfer is very slow (despite having fast satellite internet access on this end). As mentioned before, the notice that an older version of the file exists and query about replacing is also slower than before. In transferring files from 3KB to 20KB I have since original post found a predicted time of 5 seconds sometimes occurs, but typically takes a couple minutes, a time similar to under 10.4.7. But with sufficient patience, the upload is typically completed in about an HOUR! (Perhaps others with slower access are giving up thinking the processes failed?)
Finally and again, access to other parts of the Internet and using Fetch to upload to other sites is typically fast and suggests the problem may not be in my local system or hardware.

  • Hey Guys, does any of you know how to change the  Click sound?

I was wondering if any of you know how to make the cursor say that pop sound when you click anything

Like the Windows annoyance that makes a mouse click sound long after you actually clicked the mouse?
If you really want to do that here is an app for you: Did I Click

I have one paid mobileme account, few days ago I have done transition to iCloud and all my iDisk, contact... gone. Today I tried login to iCloud application on my windows pc (64bit) but I can not, it said "this apple id is valid but is not iCloud account". I can login on website icloud.com but can not login into iCloud application installed on pc. What's wrong?
I have tried another free apple ID and logged on. That's funny when I can login with free account and can not login with paid mobileme account!!!!!!

By the way - the only reason I downloaded iCloud is because Apple deleted the backup option from iTunes.  Since iCloud doesn't work, I guess we have no way to protect our iTunes music collection.  Absolutely stupid.
