10.4.9 Breaks Various Software Installers

I recently had to reformat and reinstall everything on my Macbook Pro system. I first reinstalled the OS from my install disks and then upgraded the software to 10.4.9.
I then went to do clean installs on all my applications. So far I have found two applications (one big, one small) that, while they will work if they are already installed before upgrading to 10.4.9, will not install at all if you go to 10.4.9 first. (I know these apps work under 10.4.9 because I have another system with 10.4.9 and these apps on it.) The two apps I have found so far are Adobe Photoshop Elements and Weatherbug Lite.
I contacted Adobe and we went through the usual troubleshooting steps (permissions, try installing as root, etc.) and Adobe finally said it appears that Apple changed something in 10.4.9 that is making certain application installers fail. They told me to call Apple.
An obvious, but very time-consuming solution to this mess is to go back to 10.4.8 and install the apps there and then upgrade to 10.4.9. For me, right now, I don't need either one of these apps that bad right now (and if I did, I can run them on my other system), so I will just wait for Leopard and see if the same problem exists then.
Oh well...patience is a rewarding virtue.

I would still try creating a new user to install PE. This is not a known problem with 10.4.9--people install the program every day.

  • Software Installers vs Patch Policy

    Hi,
I'm new to ZPM so please bear with me if this is a silly question.
I am creating patch policies for the critical, recommended and informational impacts and I am wondering why the Software Installers impact is nowhere to be found in the filter options. I also tried <> from those 3 impacts, which did nothing.
Considering there are both actual applications and things like Windows Malicious Software Removal tool in software installers, then it would be useful to be able to have a policy that filters by those I think. But that may simply be that I am unsure of how that impact should be used.
Could someone kindly enlighten me please.
    Thanks

It's a function of your iPhone's data speed, which is a function of your physical location and your carrier.  Talk to your carrier about increasing your data speed (probalby unlikely) or get dedicated internet to connect your computer to, i.e. cable, fiber, etc.

    bsj8377,
Information about the updates security information is made available in the Apple knowledge base at http://www.apple.com/support/ for example this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306993
Sometimes if it includes significant changes it might be announced on the iPhone product page. For example the September '07 update (Version 1.1.1) is included on this page:
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/gettingstarted/usingiphone.html
Other updates in regards to features are included in updates to the User Manual which can be downloaded at this link:

  • Problems installing various software

I keep having troubles installing things. I get to the "Select a destination" stage and then I can't select one. I get a message at the bottom of the installer saying "Some volumes are unavailable until the Installer has finished processing.", but it just sits there like that indefinitely. I don't know what to do. This has happened multiple time with various software, some of which was free, but other stuff I paid for. Any ideas?

  • How do I stop Win7 from breaking my software? Ole32.dll and "Power" service suspected culprits.

Hello and thanks for any help with this.
I built a new computer for my aunt and her one major request is that she still be able to use her card maker software Creatacard (yes misspelled just like that) by American Greetings. I thought this would be no issue, I could give her a much faster machine
and get her off (the no longer supported) WindowsXP all at the same time by moving her to Windows7 and copying all her files over from the old PC to the new one.
I tested the software first on a test PC of mine and found it would not install in a 64bit environment (error message saying use 32bit during install) which I solved by using Windows7 32bit. It worked perfectly so I proceeded to build her machine thinking
that issue resolved. Problem is after the new rig was built and SP1 plus all windows updates were installed the Creatacard software would not load. I get an instant popup message saying "Creatacard Application File has stopped working" with the options
to "Check online for a solution..." and "Close the Program."
Checking online does nothing noticeable and close program doesn't help as every time you reload it fails immediately with the same message. Clicking on the "view problem details" drop menu reveals that this is an APPCRASH with the following clues
    Fault Module Name  ole32.dll
    Fault Module Version 6.1.7601.17514
I have researched and tried everything I could find online about this crash and none of it (up to and including completely re-installing Windows, systematically loading a few Win-updates and trying the app after each batch, editing the registry multiple
times, trying alt versions of ole32.dll, and using a Linux live CD to alter windows settings) has fixed the problem.  I have learned the following though:
When windows is first installed the card maker software (CMS from here on) works fine.
After windows updates itself and a few device drivers auto load (like when you first plug in a USB mouse or Flash drive) CMS breaks.
Loading windows normally after it is up to date always causes CMS to crash and give the above message.
When I perform a "clean boot" CMS works fine once again.
When I boot into safe mode CMS works fine.
Someone online suggested a service could be the actual problem and there being 140 of them I used the 50% method to quickly narrow the list and found that yes indeed windows services do appear to be related because if I don't allow the "Power"
service to run the CMS works perfectly. With a bit of testing to see what it does I found that it controlled wake/sleep settings, delay until your monitor goes dark etc and that if the Power service is disabled it remembers the last settings entered and I
thought GREAT! Finally after many days of frustration and being balked by nonsense I have a solution. My aunt will never use/miss the power settings I will set them up for her once and then kill that service and all is well for a Happy Holiday... (from my
research online some may already guess where this is headed)  until I went to play a video............ and there was no sound.
A little red X had appeared next to the speaker icon down in the system tray next to the clock and hovering over it gave a popup with "The Audio Service is not running." This is where the BS gets deep. I had of course NOT disabled the sound (Windows
Audio) service and a quick check showed it and all the services it depended on were in fact on and running. The Windows trouble shooter offered to fix the issue and so I let it run but it comes back with "one or more Audio service is not running"
and attempting to restart the service on its own came back with a "Not fixed" result. Now if I go to check dependencies for the "Power" it claims that no other services depend on it and it depends on nothing but that is an outright lie.
Further digging shows me the Power service's "path to executable" as...  C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k DcomLauncher and many other services show they depend on DcomLauncher to run.
Long extra trouble shooting session short here is where I am at. I can have the sound working or the CMS but not both.
Uninstalling and re-installing the sound card drivers didn't help (since sound is being stopped at the windows OS level) either.
As soon as I turn on the Power service and reboot the CMS breaks. As soon as I disable the Power service and reboot the CMS works perfectly but all audio breaks. Both of these are a deal breaker as she will not leave her old slow XP machine without her CMS
and I cannot give her a new machine that has no sound. Reboots take 30 seconds on this new PC so were it mine I could just live with it as the CMS has no sound and I don't need music playing when I am designing a Christmas card. Use the sound/power on 99%
of the time and disable them and reboot whenever I make a card and then enable and reboot when I am done. This would be over her head though I fear as she is a senior and not very tech savvy. My question then is...
Is there any way to have the CMS work while still keeping the Windows Audio service (and all the other not listed but still existing dependent services) running? Or alternatively is there something else I can do to the ole32.dll to make it stop the crash/error?
To be clear I would happily accept a system without the Power service running if (like it actually says under dependencies) nothing else other than the "Power Options" in Control Panel ceased to function.

Thanks Michael. Apologies for the slow reply I was away for a bit (holiday blitz at work and visiting family madness etc.etc.) back now, I set both options you requested to "never " and retried the CMS software with no change.
I do have progress of a sort though, as a test I took a separate test PC and put a clean install of Win7 on and loaded up the CMS software (it worked perfectly) and then took the version of ole32.dll off that machine and put it onto the computer I had built
    for her (using Linux) and...
got a new error code. Darn I was so sure I had found a clever solution this time lol.
Anyway now when the CMS fails it gives me a similar error but the offending module is "ntdll.dll" sooo... I tried taking the "working" version of ntdll.dll from the test box and moving it over (making sure to back up the existing ones
first so I could put them back if needed) to her new PC and the PC would not boot.
It seems to want the original versions of a few Dynamic Link Libraries and if I could somehow give it those while not breaking Win7 it should theoretically work seeing as it no longer errors with ole32.dll.
ntdll.dll however seems necessary for Win7 to boot.
So what I am wondering now is:
Is there some way to have both versions of the DLL file in the system32 folder (bypassing the "cannot have two files with the exact same name in the same folder" thing) or rename the original DLL's something else and somehow make the CMS look for
the new named versions so the system has the updated DLL's it needs to boot/run and the CMS has the old ones it wants to run or is there someway to have a self contained install of the CMS, say on a USB flash drive and give it it's own E:/windows/system32/needed
dll's  path to the files it needs?
Willing to try any other options or settings you may have come up with as well.
Thanks again for your reply and my apologies for not answering sooner.

  • Various Software Updates (Intel)" Can't be Installed (verification failed!)

This is essentially a repost of a problem unsolved, but with a new wrinkle:
When I first reported this two months ago, it was just happening on an Intel iMac. Now, someone else in the office just purchased a MacBook Pro, and from the SAME NETWORK, is have the exact same problem!
The process is to run Software Update. Select an update. Downloading begins. But when it gets to the end, Software Update reports:
The update "<whatever the update is named>" Can't be Installed
The digital signature for this package is incorrect. The package may have been tampered with or correupted since being signed by "Apple".
Tried this several times, same message.
So, in the case of the 10.4.8 update, I tried downloading the stand-alone installers (MacOSXUpd10.4.8Intel.dmg and then MacOSXUpd10-1.4.8Intel.dmg).
Both stand-alone packages downloaded, but got a "verification failed" message in the Safari DOWNLOADS window.
Plenty of hard disk space. Permissions Repaired.
I SUSPECT the problem has something to do with either 1) the NetGear router (which connects to the DSL modem) or the Airport Base Station (which connects to the physical network, which connects to the NetGear Router).
Both Macs (iMac & MacBook Pro) are connected via the AIrport base station.
I'm pretty sure I have a good network connection, because I am able to use Apple Remote Desktop to see into the network and connect to the iMac with no connection errors.
Any ideas from all you gurus out there?

I am having the same problems on my wifes iMac. Any large updates just won't come down. Someone had suggested memory problems, but I have done a full hardware check and all is cool. My G5 on the same network get's it's updates OK.
However, when I try to download the combined 10.4.8 update (149Mb) for my wife (via my machine) I still get a verification error! I don't know what to do next. The problems started with the 10.4.8 update, so maybe it's 10.4.7 related?

  • 7.1 still breaks my software

I need to get back to 7.0.1. Every Quicktime update since then had broken an important app that I use for work. I tried updating to 7.1 to see if it still broke it. It did but now I can't get back.

Well, I had issues with the 7.1 update as well: the installer crashed before it finished. That left me with a hosed QuickTime that didn't work right, reported its version number as "(null)", and not only couldn't be rolled back or uninstalled, but I also couldn't reinstall 7.0.4 or 7.1 because both of those installers claimed that "a newer version is already installed".
First of all, Apple's installer really should auto-archive all the files it is about to change, install the new version, then erase the archive on successful installation. That way, it would be possible to roll back without reinstalling the entire OS again. That's just basic common sense.
Second, what I finally ended up doing was this:
    1) Get rid of QuickTime Player
    2) Get rid of /System/Library/Frameworks/QuickTime
WARNING: Doing this will destroy QuickTime. Without QuickTime, the Finder WILL NOT WORK. Make sure you have anything you need in your dock!
    3) Get rid of /Library/Receipts/QuickTime*.pkg
    4) Restart using my X.3.9 drive (the backup I built before I installed Tiger)
    5) Copy /System/Library/Frameworks/QuickTime from the old version (QuickTime 6.5.2)
    6) Restart, this time using the Tiger drive. Even though it is QT 6.5.2, it still works.
    7) Run the QuickTime 7.0.4 installer
Oddly enough, it automagically remembered my QT Pro registration key.
I don't recommend this process, but it's what I went through the other day trying to get my system un-hosed from the 7.1 installer. Given that I am clearly not the only person who has had problems with the 7.1 installer (I don't know how 7.1 runs; I can't get it to install!) and that it apparently has some serious issues, I am surprised that Apple still hasn't (a) pulled the 7.1 updater, (b) issued a rollback tool, (c) replaced the 7.1 installer, or (d) issued QuickTime 7.1.1. This is the first Apple software update that has ever caused me any trouble.

  • What are the various AdbeRdr90 installers?

At ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.0/enu/ I find four different install files:
    * AdbeRdr90_en_US.exe
    * AdbeRdr90_en_US_Std.exe
    * AdbeRdr90_en_US_StdA.exe
    * AdbeRdr90_en_US_StdE.exe
Any idea what these various installers are? I have successfully installed AdbeRdr90_en_US.exe, but I am still curious what the others are.

AdbeRdr90_en_US_Std.exe is the version without acrobat.com and Adobe Air. It's 26MB instead of 35MB and installs faster on slower systems.
The "A" and "E" versions are the exact same size as the Std version, and they may have the eBay toolbar option or the Adobe improvement option enabled by default (just a guess)

  • My Mac keeps randomly scrolling down in various software and i have to unpaid and repair mouse to get it to work again.

When trying to work, my MAC suddenly starts scrolling to the bottom of whatever i'm working on - Word, Excel, Outlook, Safari.  Batteries are fine.  Have to unpair and pair the mouse to get it to work.  Not a problem, but when i have to do that 5 times in 10 minutes, not acceptable.  Also, the "i" button on the keyboard doesn't work sometimes.  Both are wireless MAC products.

okay, you know this is for the Mac pro (desktop mac) rather than the MacBook pro, right? That being said, sounds like you have a problem. Turn off your screensaver, if it's on. if it's a hardware problem, eg the GPU, then take it in. If it's software, try running disk Utility and repair permissions. Failing that, get out your original install dvd's, boot up from them, and try "Archive and Install"

  • Disabling local home directories breaks the software update

    Hello,
I have my mac authenticating to a win2003 server and have disabled the local home directories but now the software update gives an error when it tries to download to the networked home directory library...etc....I have checked and rechecked the permissions... has anyone else had this problem?
    All suggestions welcome.
    Thanks
    Lori

Well, after several hours on the phone, I'm convinced that somehow my ISP is blocking the Software Update address. Soft. Update works when I connect to other networks.
I asked Apple for the address that Software Update is trying to connect to, but they wouldn't give it to me. Privacy and Security issues for them, apparently. Consequently, I don't have a web address to Ping. That was a good idea , though. My ISP couldn't seem to help me. So, at this point I'm not sure what else I can do except...
In a month, my satellite internet provider is sending a stand alone sat-modem that I'm going to use instead of the set up I have now: involving a USB modem and sharing the internet connection through a specific computer that always has to be on and connected. (the satellite internet is a "one way" system that uses dial-up for the uplink and comes high-speed back down through the satellite) This new modem will serve as the dial up modem and also has two ethernet connections so I can send one directly to my router and the other to my wired desktop. I hope by taking the host computer out of the equation I'll also solve this issue. Who knows.
Anyway, thanks for the info. I appreciate your feedback and if you have any other ideas, I'd love to see them.

  • Re: Deploying software (Installers)

Not sure java is the best technology for installers. What if they don't have java installed (I think the installer should also be able to detect
if there is java and install it as well)?
personally for a windows installer i would recommend NSIS
this is an open source installer which enables you to write scripts that defines the installer pages and functionality.
you can register your application and add it to the "add and remove programs" in windows,
you can also invoke other installers (for example java or mysql) from it easily and so on.
    look at [http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Main_Page]

    Charles,
Since you only need to change the IP address &\or Hostname, this should be a straight forward
    process.
    * Connecting to the AAI interface of the DMM & SnS locally using a Display & Keyboard, Change the
    Network settings.
    - change Hostname (if applicable)
    - change IP address & subnet address
    - change gateway address (if applicable)
    - change DNS settings (if applicable)
    * use the NETWORK_TOOLS 9AAI) to test the network connections
    * Verify the server FQDNs are changed in your Corporate DNS servers to reference the new IP address'
    * Once IP connectivity & DNS settings have been verified, Re-Pair the appliances starting with the SnS to DMM first...

I have a large video on my ipad that I need to transfer to my PC (a window 7).  I could also use a windows 8 if that would help.  But all of the applications I have tried do not see this large video (52 mins) even though they transfer smaller videos fine.  The ipad will not let me trim the video, saying it is too large.  This is true even though I only want to trim the original, and not create a new video.  (Actually it refuses before it gets to the choice of creating something new or just eliminating something from the original).  I have been to an Apple store, but the people there only could recommend that I try some alternate applications to do the transfer (Kodak EasyShare).  I don't have much faith this will work.  I think I have this application on an old PC, and it is not something I want on my new computers.
Is it possibled the size of this video just violates the transfer formats for files over USB?  If so, I will just delete the video and move on.  But the video is really something I wanted to save.  I would be happy to eliminate most of the video, but the ipad will not let me trim it.
I also tried to import the video with Windows Moviemaker (free with W7).  It also does not see this file, but works fine on the other videos on the ipad.

  • *FIX* Software Updater install errors *FIX*

If you're getting an error 1720 when trying to install Nokia Software Updater, there is a workaround.
The error is only in Nokia's combined installer, not the NSU installer itself.
    1. Download and install 7-Zip. Don't worry it's free!
(No, neither WinRAR nor WinZip will do for this)
    Get it here: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
    2. Use 7-Zip to extract the contents of NokiaSoftwareUpdaterSetup_en.exe into a folder. You should now have a bunch of folders and a few files.
    3. Go into Packages, then NokiaSoftwareUpdater, then Setup
    4. Launch NokiaSoftwareUpdater.msi (double-click it).
    5. That's it!
I think the problem must be a script Nokia have used in their combined installer, which in itself is unnecessary as NokiaSoftwareUpdater.msi will start the installers for the other apps and drivers anyway. Those crazy Fins!
Whatever, this worked for me so hopefully it'll work for you too! :-)
    I didn't get where I am today.

    .:UPDATE:.
Unfortunately this workaround doesn't work with the updated NSU (version 01.04.053.34607) that came out on July 31st (2008).
Whatever Nokia have done, it now means that even after extracting the installer from the package, you will still get Error 1720.
Nokia, why are you breaking your software for us?! Please simplify the installations so we can keep our devices' firmware up to date. Otherwise what's the point of your programmers constantly coding updates?
    Sheesh!
    I didn't get where I am today.
