Software Installers vs Patch Policy

Hi,
I'm new to ZPM so please bear with me if this is a silly question.
I am creating patch policies for the critical, recommended and informational impacts and I am wondering why the Software Installers impact is nowhere to be found in the filter options. I also tried <> from those 3 impacts, which did nothing.
Considering there are both actual applications and things like Windows Malicious Software Removal tool in software installers, then it would be useful to be able to have a policy that filters by those I think. But that may simply be that I am unsure of how that impact should be used.
Could someone kindly enlighten me please.
Thanks
Peter

  • Running 5.5 U2e and VUM will no longer download software packages from patch source?

We had a vSphere 5.5 cluster configured for us by a 3rd-party through Dell as part of our purchase agreement. We are running vCenter Server 5.5 U2e on Windows 2012 R2 as a physical host. It does run Update Manager. In my most recent check today, Update Manager will scan a host and report patches that are needed. In this case we're at 5.5.0 Build 2456374 on our ESXi hosts. Update Manager detects 5 missing patches. After I put the host in maintenance mode, I remediate, select the patch group, and proceed through the screens. It starts its process and goes from 0% to 16% to 25% then sits there for about 1–3 minutes, then goes to 90%, 91%, and errors out saying:
"Cannot download software packages from patch source. Check the events and the Update Manager log for download details."
    Multiple strange things:
This server was updating just fine a few months back when some previous patches were released.
It can see the internet just fine. No firewall issues.
Our failover site on the same network, but in a different location in the city is able to update just fine. Same hardware, network, and software versions.
Any ideas on where to look or what to try? I had gone ahead and update from vCenter Server 5.5 U2b to U2e (along with a VUM reinstall) hoping that would fix it, but it did not. Any help would be greatly appreciated, because we're not VMware experts and thought everything was set up correctly by the vendor. We were given a small amount of knowledge transfer, but nothing that would allow us to troubleshoot this.
The Update Manager config listed in vCenter Server points to just three sources, that look to be the default from hostupdate.vmware.com and vapp-updates.vmware.com. None of the settings have been changed from the initial install and configuration that were working at one point in the last few months (when I last patched the hosts to 2456374).

Well, apparently this patch / vib was pulled after release, based on issues with "VMware NSX for vSphere 6.x or Cisco Nexus 1000v" as seen in KB2116370: VMware KB: After upgrading to VMware ESXi 5.5 Patch Release ESXi550-201504002, virtual machines using VMware NSX for…
Ok, that's cool. But here's my question then. Why is Update Manager still reporting that it's an available patch for our ESXi hosts? I'm new to this and am just trying to get an understanding to avoid confusion like this in the future.
    [UPDATE]
Looks like this was the problem. VMwareCares Twitter account confirmed that Update Manager needed a new repository query to grab the new metadata. After rescanning the ESXi host again, the number of available patches dropped from 5 to 1. I'm now successfully patching the ESXi hosts through Update Manager once again. Crisis avoided.

  • How to check  that same Oracle software versions(including patch versions)

How to check that same Oracle software versions(including patch versions) is installed on two hosts(machines) ?
    We are using following process:
    On Host A :
    1) Get the Oracle version using SQLPlus -v
From this output, extract the version number.
2)Find the patches installed using opatch lsinventory -detail
From the output , Extract the Patch numbers and Bugs fixed.
    3) Store the version , patch and bugs information in a common file.
    On Host B :
Repeat the steps 1 and 2 and compare with the values from Host A.
Please let us know if there is any other method to do this.
    Thanks.

This is wrong: for Oracle Database version 10.2.0.4 *4* identifies the patch set and does not give information about interim patchs.
It is correct to use opatch lsinventory to get interim patchs.

  • Unacceptable Performance - Unacceptable Point Patch Policy

There are known issues with Flash CS3. Notable of these are
the publish crashes on all platforms. I find it completely
unacceptable that Macromedia > Adobe's perspective on patches is
typically 'a paid upgrade will patch the program'.
This is completely unusual in the industry and the fact that
you now hold the monopoly on good (great tools, but not perfect
tools) is no excuse for not fixing issues with your software. I
find it pretty deplorable that you will fix known issues by
pitching an upgrade. 'Pay to upgrade or live with the issues' is no
    way to be.
Flash crashes on me no less than 10 times a day. Most of
these crashes occur at publish time. I save my work often, but even
a 15 minute loss is aggrevating. When Flash locks or crashes,
windows can lock things like the context menu from use - this
requires a restart. So a Flash crash ends up doing these things:
    1. Interruption of flow
    2. Loss of work
    3. Loss of time
This can equate to a momentum loss, time loss, and work loss
of up to an hour. Multiply this by 4 to 10 times a day and you can
only imagine how steamed a developer can get.
I use Vista, but I understand that this issue also occurs on
Mac. I use video editing software, word processing software,
spreadsheets, and other authoring software that doesn't crash. Why
am I expected to live with this until Adobe releases a full point
    release?
Can I get an amen from any other developers out there? I'd
love Adobe to be as responsive to developers (IDE users, I've seen
a lot of catering to the more hardcore programmer types that tend
NOT to use the IDE anyway). as they are to the public with Flash
    player updates.

You realize, of course, that the "you" referred to in your
post is not Adobe. This is a user-to-user forum. If you're unhappy
with Adobe policy, write to them directly. The likelihood of anyone
from Adobe with any influence reading this forum or this post is
    next to null.
That said, as a Flash user since 2000, I'm flabbergasted at
the attitude that Flash is somehow "perfect" upon release and no
bugs exist. I was hoping this policy would change when Adobe bought
Macromedia, since Adobe tends to release a few patches for each of
its major apps as bugs are uncovered.
But alas, no hope. I once cornered one of the leaders of the
Flash development team at an official Macromedia event a couple
years ago and brought this up. He replied that they "need to focus
all their resources on developing the next release." I had to
withhold myself from being really rude in response.

  • 10.4.9 Breaks Various Software Installers

I recently had to reformat and reinstall everything on my Macbook Pro system. I first reinstalled the OS from my install disks and then upgraded the software to 10.4.9.
I then went to do clean installs on all my applications. So far I have found two applications (one big, one small) that, while they will work if they are already installed before upgrading to 10.4.9, will not install at all if you go to 10.4.9 first. (I know these apps work under 10.4.9 because I have another system with 10.4.9 and these apps on it.) The two apps I have found so far are Adobe Photoshop Elements and Weatherbug Lite.
I contacted Adobe and we went through the usual troubleshooting steps (permissions, try installing as root, etc.) and Adobe finally said it appears that Apple changed something in 10.4.9 that is making certain application installers fail. They told me to call Apple.
An obvious, but very time-consuming solution to this mess is to go back to 10.4.8 and install the apps there and then upgrade to 10.4.9. For me, right now, I don't need either one of these apps that bad right now (and if I did, I can run them on my other system), so I will just wait for Leopard and see if the same problem exists then.
Oh well...patience is a rewarding virtue.

I would still try creating a new user to install PE. This is not a known problem with 10.4.9--people install the program every day.

  • Patch Policy for EBS

Does anyone have a comprehensive list of all technology that requires security patching in the oracle EBS and supporting infrastructure?
I'd prefer comments as opposed to endless links. And possibly if you could provide a split of what Oracle will patch in the technology stack, and what it doesnt, i.e. what requires 3rd party patching?
I am pretty sure our web servers run apache, does oracle EBS only run on certain supported versions of web services?

I'd prefer comments as opposed to endless links. And possibly if you could provide a split of what Oracle will patch in the technology stack, and what it doesnt, i.e. what requires 3rd party patching? If you mean OS patch than you can apply those patch, but if its prod than i suggest Rise SR for make clear your issue wiht oracle support

  • Software Updates Failing - Group Policy Overwritten - Server and Policy NOT CONFIGURED

I have seen a few posts about this issue and group policy overwriting the settings needed by SCCM with the wrong WSUS server. I checked the wuahandlerlog and found this error but it didnt have the server information.
"Group policy settings were overwritten by a higher authority (Domain Controller) to: Server  and Policy NOT CONFIGURED"
The only coputer policy that applies to this system does not have WSUS entries in it.  Windows update runs ok, and I deleted the WSUS registry keys that were set by a script and reinstall the client still getting the same error. I dont see any GPO local or domain, or reg keys that are setting anything. I have 10 other servers is the same AD container that this is working perfecly on.......
    Suggestions????

    Check out this GPO:
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Group Policy:
"Turn off Local Group Policy Objects processing"
    The help text:
"This policy setting prevents Local Group Policy Objects (Local GPOs) from being applied.
By default, the policy settings in Local GPOs are applied before any domain-based GPO policy settings. These policy settings can apply to both users and the local computer. You can disable the processing and application of all Local GPOs to ensure that only
    domain-based GPOs are applied.
If you enable this policy setting, the system does not process and apply any Local GPOs.
If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, Local GPOs continue to be applied.
Note: For computers joined to a domain, it is strongly recommended that you only configure this policy setting  in domain-based GPOs. This policy setting will be ignored on computers that are joined to a workgroup."

  • Re: Deploying software (Installers)

Not sure java is the best technology for installers. What if they don't have java installed (I think the installer should also be able to detect
if there is java and install it as well)?
personally for a windows installer i would recommend NSIS
this is an open source installer which enables you to write scripts that defines the installer pages and functionality.
you can register your application and add it to the "add and remove programs" in windows,
you can also invoke other installers (for example java or mysql) from it easily and so on.
    look at [http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Main_Page]

    Charles,
Since you only need to change the IP address &\or Hostname, this should be a straight forward
    process.
    * Connecting to the AAI interface of the DMM & SnS locally using a Display & Keyboard, Change the
    Network settings.
    - change Hostname (if applicable)
    - change IP address & subnet address
    - change gateway address (if applicable)
    - change DNS settings (if applicable)
    * use the NETWORK_TOOLS 9AAI) to test the network connections
    * Verify the server FQDNs are changed in your Corporate DNS servers to reference the new IP address'
    * Once IP connectivity & DNS settings have been verified, Re-Pair the appliances starting with the SnS to DMM first...

  • Slow or failed texting following IOS5 software update and patch

My family has 2 iphones (3gs and 4s). 3gs is used both in the states and international and the 4s is used only in the states.  Since we've updated the software we have had a number of issues.
    3gs
    - Never had issues with sending long texts and pix before.
    - always quick to send and the send progress bar never hesitated.
    New problems since download -
    - very slow text sending
    - size matters! pix rarely send and I have to send very short text (2-3 lines).
    - The long text messages I sent prior no longer are able to send.
I did try changing carriers (international location) to fix the problem and this seemed to work at first but now after several days its no different.  In reality, I doubt this made a difference. Problems are still consistent.
    4s
    - Rarely dropped calls
    - Text sent quickly without any issues
    New problems since download
    - Texting is incredibly slow in sending messages and often is unable to send.
Two phones in two different locations with similar problems following the same software update.  Someone please enighten me on what the issue is.  thanks!

I need to clarify.  The issue isn't that the 4s  sends faster, it's now sending much slower than it used to before the software update.  We are both using different carriers and seem to be experiencing verys similar issues.  But this is also happening when we are texting each other.  So could the issue be my wifes carrier at home and not my carrier overseas?  ATT told me to switch my carrier international but that didn't work.  My wife tried the same but didn't have the same "carrier" option on her settings page that I did.

  • Group Policy - Issues deploying software packages through GPO

    Hello everyone,
I am having issues successfully deploying MSI packages through group policy.  I have set my computer account up in its own test OU in my domain, but yet the software will not deploy.  Example, I'm trying to deploy AVG Anti-Virus and make sure it
is installed on each and every PC in my domain.  As for the GPO, I set it up as an assigned package and pointed to the location of the package with the UNC file path (visible to both the DC and my computer that is part of the affected OU)
On the domain controller, I get these messages in application event logs:
Beginning a Windows Installer transaction: \\hs-dc2\software\avg\installavg.msi. Client Process Id: 9048.
Ending a Windows Installer transaction: \\hs-dc2\software\avg\installavg.msi. Client Process Id: 9048.
This shows up when I refresh GP on my computer.  I run gpresult /h GPReport.html and get the following message:
Software Installation failed due to the error listed below.
    Fatal error during installation.
Additional information may have been logged. Review the Policy Events tab in the console or the application event log for events between
The software is in a share on the domain controller that is visible from my computer, and permissions are set where "Everyone" has read access.  I have tested the package on my computer and it installs
correctly if I do it manually, so it's a good package.
I'm at a loss.  I am admitedly very new to GP management, but I'm pretty sure I have covered all my bases here.  I humbly ask for any and all help that you all can provide.
Thank you all very much, have a great weekend!

    > Magnolia_Schools.exe
    What's that???
    > \\hs-dc2\software\avg\installavg.msi
    > <file://\\hs-dc2\software\avg\installavg.msi> /qb addeploy=1
    /qb ADDEPLOY=1
    Uppercase matters (:
A bissle "Experience", a bissle GMV... Wenn meine Antwort hilfreich war, freue ich mich über eine Bewertung! If my answer was helpful, I'm glad about a rating!
I should have explained, my apologies.  The InstallAVG.msi is the package I have GP deploying.  it is a package that AVG wrote for us that goes in, uninstalls the two previous antivirus softwares we have on our network if it is present, and
then wraps it to run magnolia_schools.exe which installs the AV software.  I am uninstalling AVG now and will try reinstalling with
    \\hs-dc2\software\avg\installavg.msi /qb ADDEPLOY=1 and report back.
also, the only logs I found that were around the time of the install attempt were such as these:
    1: 2905 2: C:\windows\system32\appmgmt\MACHINE\{06ee0d46-cd5f-4216-a09f-2aeb573aa5ba}.aas
    1: 2905 2: C:\windows\system32\appmgmt\MACHINE\{06ee0d46-cd5f-4216-a09f-2aeb573aa5ba}.aas
    Does that tell you anything?
I will say this, if this means anything...now that AVG is installed, the event logs are changing from an error %%1603 to this:
Failed to apply changes to software installation settings. The installation of software deployed through Group Policy for this user has been delayed until the next logon because the changes must be applied before the user logon. The error was : %%1274
The removal of the assignment of application exe2msiSetupPackage from policy Install AVG failed. The error was : %%2
So it acts like it's at least seeing that the package is installed...and reacting differently, correct?
    Thanks so much

  • Group policy to Delete unauthorised software per logon

I have a group of  on-site engineers (domain users but have local administrators rights) who are using laptops. They are required to install software occasionally when they travel, therefore I need a way using group policy to remove all these software not installed by group policy.
I only want the software(s) to be removed when they log-on to the company network/Domain/Active Directory. Can it be done per log-on?
I understand that one way to do it is to remove the registry of all software not installed by group policy so that it cannot be used. .Software installed by group policy should not be affected. Drivers for hardware should not be affected.
Do you guys have any idea how to do so?

    what does exactly this means?

  • Software Installation - Group Policy

I created a group policy objects to include software installation of both Adobe Flash Player ActiveX and NANPI but they did not update both on several systems that I tested on.
UNC Path to both MSI files are good and I checked permission, it should not be any problem for these systems to access both MSI files. My goal is to update existing Adobe Flash to latest version and to install them if any system do not have them.
I do not understand why Group Policy failed to update Adobe Flash ActiveX and NANPI version 14 to 16 on both systems.

Application Event Log is showing this:
    Application Management Group Policy
    General
Failed to apply changes to software installation settings.  The installation of software deployed through Group Policy for this user has been delayed until the next logon because the changes must be applied before the user logon.  The error was
    : %%1274
    Detail
-> Event Data: The installation of software deployed through Group Policy for this user has been delayed until the next logon because the changes must be applied before the user logon. 1274
Do you have any idea what this can be causing this problem?

    Microsoft Virtual PC 6
may not take kindly to having
    Connectix Virtual PC 5.0.4
installed on the same machine and running at the same time.
    Norton Utilities 6.0
No! No! No! Norton Utilities lost its lustre with Mac OS 8.1. Ever since then, its Disk Doctor and Speed Tools/Disk have caused more headaches in hard drive issues than the combined effects of dropped hard drives, magnets, and power surges. If you use these utilities on any system newer than Mac OS 8.0, beware, it is Russian Roulette how long your machine will stay safe. Backup your data frequently before using any of these utilities.
Apple SCSI Card Patch - Apple Atto SCSI Card Hack
If you have a SCSI card, sure, but not everyone running 9 uses SCSI. Remember, the first non-SCSI Mac was an 8.1 machine, the original iMac G3/233.
    Motorola MathLib Update
Never had this, never needed it.
    DivX Doctor 2.2
DivX has created issues for some people using some Quicktime software.
    Iomega Tools IomegaWare English 8.6 - 9.x
If using a zip drive, be careful with this, as sometimes it actually fails to work properly.
    OpenDoc
Only needed if you are going to use Cyberdog.
    XPostFacto 4 - Mac OS X Boot
Only needed if you are going to install an unsupported version of Mac OS X. Has nothing to do with Mac OS 9.
.smi files are disk images for specific software installers. On their own, they do you no good. If the installer has a document inside them, be sure to drag it to the appropriate place if it isn't itself an installer application.
