10.6.5 Combo Update - always corrupt download?

Hi all,
I'm a user of PGP WDE and need to download the Combo Update. Whenever I try to download from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 with whatever browser - tried multiple Macs, Browsers - even Windows - I get a download of about 204 MB. The file is a) corrupt and b) not of expected size (977 MB as stated by the web page).
Is anyone else experiencing this? Could someone please verify this? Any thoughts on solving this?
Best regards,
Sascha

Hi!
thanks for verifying.
In the meantime, I walked my way through all the referrers within the download and was able to access the file "directly". It downloaded successfully and is ready for installation. The root cause remains unidentified...
Rgds,
Sascha

• Creative Cloud Updater cannot update CS6 - Corrupted Download

In practical terms I am of course using Photoshop CC 2014. However as part of the CC update process, my original installation of CS6 (before subscribing to Creative Cloud) gets updated.
It now keeps failing with the following warning: "Update Failed The download appears corrupted (U43M1D204)".
Where might I find the downloaded update so I can delete it and restart the CC update process? Or is there another way of resolving it so that CC updater doesn't constantly indicate a pending update required?

Have you been able to DL these size files before? I suspect your ISP. Try DLing another similar sized file from another server.
It could also be the Apple server. Wait and try again later.
There is nothing in the software that I know of that would limit the size of a DL.

Hi.  Is Ellorose your name?
It would help to know your operating system, but I'll assume Windows for no other reason that there are more Windows than OSX users out there.
Restart your computer, and open the Application Manager as Administrator (right click its icon)
Now run the update again.

• How do I remove a Mac Combo update that I downloaded by mistake?

Hi, trying to restore the appstore.app, it had greyed out and the error message said it was damaged. I was advised to download MacOSXUpd Combo10.6.8. I inadvertently downloaded 10.6.6 Combo by mistake. It's a big package akmost 1.0gb. I'd like to remove it. Any suggestions?

Hi Klaus, I think I did try to install it, then I realised that it was an earlier version than my existing one, beacuse it wouldn't actually install. Now, when I try to move it to the trash I'm told "The item “MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.6.pkg” can’t be moved to the Trash because it can’t be deleted."  Any ideas?

• 10.6.8 Combo Update Download Broken

I’ve been trying to download the 10.6.8 Combo Update, but the download seems to be broken. Instead of the stated 1.09 GB, the download completes after 1.00 GB and the dmg won’t mount, citing an error through a pop-up dialog.
I’ve tried downloading in both Safari 5 and Chrome 14.
Is there a way to notify Apple of this? Is there a mirror? Can anything be done?

• How to resolve corrupt downloaded updates

Being new to the Apple MacBook Pro product I'm hoping someone could assist in advising on the following problem I'm experiencing. I purchased the item two days ago and after setting up the basics fro the first time of switching on the machine, I found that there were 12 software updates needing to be done. I duly accepted all 12 updates and the download process of 1.28GB started. At the end of the download the machine needs to be restarted in order to install the updates which I accept.
After the first few seconds of carrying out the installation of the updates an error occurs informing me the updates could not be applied/installed due to a corrupt file and that the next time updates are run and installed it will try again. Needless to say I tried again and again downloaded the 1.28GB of updates, which includes the OS update from 10.6.7 to 10.6.8. Again the same thing happened where an error was returned stating that the download file was corrupt. Being in South Africa and not having the online support available from Apple as it is in most other countries I contacted the approved Apple importer and supplier locally and was informed that I need to run the updates individually.
Again I tried downloading the updates individually starting with the OS update which also downloaded fine but when it came to installing the update it again returned the same error of being corrupt and not able to install. Thereafter I tried updating iTunes and again with the download completed it also returns the same error when trying to install the update - file corrupt cannot install.
Any advice or assistance out there besides throwing the machine against the wall?

A combo updater is different from a version update - the combo updater contains all the patches of all the previous updates of the major version. 10.6.8v1.1 combo updater will update any version from 10.6.0 through 10.6.7 - which you would use if having to reinstall from DVD.
Corruption is a possibilty in any network connection when pushed to the edge of its achievable speed. If can happen over wifi or wired connections. It does not result from packet loss, because packets are guaranteed by the network stack. Corruption of data within a packet can occur. Thats where the checksums SHA1 and md5 can be used to guarantee with a very high probabilty that a file is intact.
So certainly the fix for corruption involves getting a more reliable network connection - in general wired is better than wireless and strong signal is better and slower is better than faster.
For those without options to connect to a more reiable network, repeated attempts at download will usually result in a good copy eventually.

• Which update do I download: 10.8.4 or 10.8.4 (Combo)?

I have an early 2009 iMac (model id iMac9,1) running 10.8.3 (build 12D78). At support.apple.com/downloads I'm presented with two updates: version 10.8.4 with no suffix--apparently the cooking variety, and 10.8.4 (Combo).  The cooking variety download is 342 MB while the Combo download is 810 MB.  It's clear, even to me, that there's a whole lot more in the latter than in the former.   One article, HT5730, is cited for both and offers no distinctions.  There is no guidance about which to choose.  Can someone point me in the right direction?

IMHO download and install the Combo Update. I have always used them as they update everything from 10.8 in completeness, whereas the incremental updates are only updating the improvements made in the new version, if that makes sense. So I would suggest to always use the Combo.

• HT2405 unable to install mac 10.5.5 combo update after downloading when i do restart it stop.

hey  i am not able to install mac os x update combine on my mac after i  installed new date os on my mac. so kindly help me regarding this.

Some general advice on updating Leopard:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• Safari won't open after 10.6.8 combo update, Yosemite won't download.

Background:  [Experts welcome to avoid this by skipping to the next paragraph]  I need to update my MacBookAir to Yosemite from Snow Leopard.  To answer the obvious, since most who read this think I'm practically working with an abacus and smoke signals:  I've been avoiding upgrades because I just didn't see the need to spend the money when I wasn't having any issues.  The issue now is that I can't get Norton support with Snow Leopard.  So, having heard of the free upgrade to 10.10, I went for it.  --And no, I'm not a cheapskate.  In fact, I couldn't afford the Air to start with, but some fool gave me a credit card and-- well, there you go.
The problem:  I want to (finally) upgrade from Snow Leopard to Yosemite.  I downloaded the 10.6.8 combo pack to my MacBookAir (11-inch, late 2010), necessary to get an App Store update that would allow the download of Yosemite.  [This is how I was successful in going through this same process with my MacMini (early 2010).  Although there's a Java problem there that's baffling--another question, another thread.]  The machine tells me the combo pack update installed successfully, but I can't get past that step to OS 10.10.  When I open the App Store and navigate to Yosemite and select to get it, nothing happens.  Additionally, and most troubling, is that now Safari won't open for more than a couple of seconds before "unexpectedly" shutting down For what it's worth, Mail works fine, so internet connectivity doesn't seem to be the issue.
What I've tried:
-Software Update.  Air tells me the operation can't be completed because I don't have permission.
-Verified both start up disc and HD, including repairing permissions.  Still no go on updates.
-Not banging my head against the wall.  This has been successful thus far.  However, I'm willing to go there if it will help.
Thanks in advance for guidance
p.s.  I'm willing to--for the short term--go back to pre-10.6.8 combo update if that's what I need to do to use Safari.

Problem already solved! Found a existing thread with the same issue!

For anyone that comes across this. I managed to fix the problem. It had something to do with the date on my computer. Mavericks installer apparently does a date check of some sort and that is where the error is coming from. Open terminal and check the system date. It may be wrong. Another poster in the forums told me how to to check the date and change it. Click here for the link to the explanation. Be careful because the date is in a weird format.

If I have lost my music collection I will be switching platforms ASAP. It is insane that Apple has updates seemingly every day for their products.

I was in your same situation with 14 downloads and 14 attempts.
You have to make sure that your Mac is booting into 64 bit mode.  You can make sure of this by going into System Preferences and scrolling down to 'Software' and making sure that you are booding with 64 bit Kexts.
If not, restart while holding the 6 and 4 keys down until you see the spinning gear wheel and try installng again.
BUT, what I also did was to go into Applications, click on the Lion installer, Get Info, and give yourself custom priviliges to Read And Write.
I did this simultaneously, and I don't know what function did it, but it worked for me, with no further downloads of the installer.
Good luck!
