10.6.5 Update Experience

I have read lots of threads and it seems many have unfortunately experienced issues updating from 10.6.4 to 10.6.5.
I would like to make a positive post in a tiny attempt to strike a balance.
I have a mid 2010, 15 inch, 2.53ghz Core i5 MacBook Pro with optional Hi-Res screen, it came with 10.6.4 pre-installed. I used Software Update to upgrade. It downloaded and installed without a hitch, the machine took a little longer to boot the first couple of times whilst the caches were being re-built but now it is as good as ever.
It was by far a lot less problematic than any Windows based Service Pack upgrade I have done before.
I realize this post will be of no use to anyone but I think feedback should be given good as well as bad.

Alternatively, follow this advice.
Get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire, since it's 40-50% faster than USB 2 and designed for data transfers), make a bootable backup/clone before updating/upgrading, and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall or reset anything. See these for details:

http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/installswupdates.html

If you only have a Time Machine backup, ensure that you can reliably restore it to another disk/volume/partition before updating/upgrading.

  • Tiger 10.4.4 Update & Experiences?

Anyone planning on installing this new OSX INTEL NATIVE update on their Mac Mini?
I hate to say it but I just can't help thinking that Apple somehow is now
half Mac - half Windows using Intel chips. Basically, this all means one
thing to me.......BUGS! Hopefully I'm wrong.
I'll have to wait for people to buy the new MacTels or install the new OSX update and read their posts about security issues and so forth before I can feel confident that the Macs with Intel chips and especially the new 10.4.4 Intel Native update are NOT VULNERABLE!
I'd like to keep my Mac FULLY MAC AUTHENTIC! But I'm sure it will be necessary for anyone needing to install "UNIVERSAL APPS"
Just my viewpoint... Those of you who install it please post your experiences.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again; what makes a Mac into a Mac is nothing at all to do with the chips inside the box, it's in the design of the product, the the ethos of ease of use, and the integration of hardware/software and applications into a seamless, single object. I seriously doubt that having an Intel processor inside is going to remotely change the usability or look and feel of the system, even in the sense of the hardware platform itself.
Macs have run on a number of platforms over the years, and undergone similar transitions. I don't recall any Mac looking or feeling like it was anything like a Mac despite that.
As to vulnerabilities, there's nothing inherently problematic with the Intel platform or inherently secure about the PPC. It's like cars - all can be broken into, but some have better locks and security features. It's Windows that creates system vulnerabilities, not the hardware it runs on, and the fact Macs are now using Intel processors doesn't mean Windows vulnerabilities are of concern to Mac users - unless , of course, Mac users end up running Windows on their systems, either because the hardware supports it directly or through VPC.

  • Bizarre update experience: iTunes says I have 5.0 but my phone mostly same old

This is weird. I just updated and after going through the initial iOS5 setup process on my phone, I was told I would be using "the most advanced phone OS," but my home screen was pretty much the same! iTunes tells me I have software version 5.0 but almost none of the features are there (the music/iPod icon changed, and Newsstand was added). Other than those minor additions, I've got nothing! Notification does not appear if I swipe my finger from the top of the screen.

The User Guide is available at http://support.apple.com/manuals/ or downloadable from iTunes as an iBook.
Are you looking for notifications on the lock screen? Try the Home screen.

  • 10.5.3 update experience?

Have you updated your MBA to 10.5.3? Any issues?

I attempted the update today on my MacBook Air. Things did not go well.
I used the Software Update application (ie. not the Combo Updater). After the package finished downloading and the system logged me out, the installation failed to finish. I received a dialogue box telling me that the source media for this update was damaged and that I should get new media from my retailer (paraphrasing).
On restart, the Mac would not boot past the Apple Logo + Spinner (loading kernel extensions).
With a verbose boot, I saw that the AppleUSBMultitouchDriver was failing to start.
I attempt a Safe Boot, and I eventually got to the Login Window. However, the login window would accept my password, the screen would go blue, and then I would be presented with the login window again. I couldn't log in.
I used Remote Install Mac OS X to reinstall 10.5.2, and here I am now. I'm afraid to try the update again (perhaps I'll use the combo updater), but I need the update to download the latest iPhone SDK.

  • Updating to iOS 7; the Smart Way!

Heya! For anyone who has not yet installed iOS 7 on their device, here's a few tips on how to optimize your update experience:
First things first! Keep in minf that there are peaks times during which people are not only updating, but restoring their device, activating it, or activating services like FaceTime and iMessage.  During these times, you might encounter errors in reaching the Apple update server.  Just remember, perserverence and patience! Keep on trying!
    Now on to the updating!
1.) Install the latest version of iTunes (version 11.1).  I recommend doing so by going to apple.com/iTunes and downloading iTunes again from there, even if you already have it installed.
2.) Turn off Find My iPhone.  Since iOS 7 will have activation lock, which I do believe requires a passcode or password of some sort, you don't want that to be on as soon as you begin setting up the device with its new iOS 7 on it.  And it will be turned on if you leave Find My iPhone turned on.
3.) Connect your device to iTunes and back it up, or perform an iCloud backup.  Just remember, if using iCloud backup for the first time, this could take a LOOOONG time!
4.) After backing up, you might also need to transfer purchases to the computer from the iPhone (or whatever iOS device you have). You do this in iTunes by clicking File, then click Devices, then click Transfer Purchases From (your iPhone's name).
5.) You can also sync Contacts, Calendars, Notes, and other important personal data to an approved program on your computer, or you can sync with iCloud.  I recommend doing this not only before an update or restore, but as a general routine, same as backing up your iPhone.  Apple even has a support article on how to save your data! http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296?viewlocale=en_US
6.) Click Update! Have a tasty beverage, read a magazine, tuck your kids into bed, whatever tickles your fancy.  Even with a good internet connection and a nifty new computer, the software download and update process might take a while.  A nap is also a good idea!
7.) Set up your device, if needed.  Sometimes you'll need to set up your iPhone from the backup you just created again. Go through the setup process as you normally would and choose the backup you want to use.
8.) Sync or redownload (you can see how in this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519) any missing content.
9.) Enjoy! Play around with and get the feel for iOS 7 and you'll be loving it in no time!  If there's a feature that's been changed or is missing, Apple's got a great way to let their Engineers know your feelings about it! apple.com/feedback
If anyboday has problems and they can't be solved via discussions, go to getsupport.apple.com and you should be able to work your way through the prompts to get the various Apple contact methods. They're usually really nice and don't mind t help out!
    Thanks for taking a look!

Wups, forgot the 4S doesn't have LTE.  I was thinking of my Ipad 3rd gen.  My friend is stuck using the 4G signal now though which constantly drops.

  • Ti G4 PB crashes when running Software Update

I just received a Titanium PowerBook G4 800Mhz used on eBay. Has 512MB ram, 100GB Hitachi 5400rpm hardrive insalled, airport card and came freshly formatted with 10.3 installed and a CD with system patches up to 10.3.9. I reformatted the hardrive and attempted to do a clean install of 10.4 Tiger and here are my issues:
    1. After installing 10.4, attempt software update, all current updates and 10.4.3 combo update, experience kernel panic in middle of update with grayed out screen and multi-language message “you need to restart your computer, hold down power button." Everytime I restart and run software update, same problem happens.
    2. Restart and go to Apple’s website and download 10.4.1 manually. Installs with no problem
    3. Download 10.4.2 from Apple’s site, experience kernel panic, have to hard restart.
    4. Download 10.4.3 via software update, computer freezes, but after a couple of hard restarts it installs somehow.
    5. With 10.4.3 installed, software update “quits unexpectedly” every time I try to run it.
    6. Boot off of Hardware Test CD, run tests, everything test okay
    7. Decided to install 10.3 Panther to see if problem is with 10.4
    8. Reformat and clean install 10.3
    9. Run software update and attempt to install all current updates up to 10.3.9, screen completely freezes during “expanding” portion of update window. Have to hard restart, same problem every time I run software update.
Well, I’m stumped. I’ve attempted everything I can think of and was up till 3am last night trying to figure this out. I’ve run Disk Warrior, reformatted and partitioned the hard drive multiple times in different ways, all with the same results. I just completely reformatted my old white iBook G3 and installed 10.4.3 with no problems, and that machine is older and not nearly as impressive as this Titanium, so it leads me to believe that there is an underlying hardware problem, or at least a firmware problem. Also, the fact that the previous owner sent the computer with 10.3 installed and a CD with individual patch updates makes me think he was aware of the problem with Software Update and wanted me to update using the CD. I don't know, I'm lost at this point. Could it be the replacement Hitachi hard drive? Bad memory? Please, any help is greatly appreciated.

    Ti PowerBook G4 800Mhz 15.2" w/DVI   Mac OS X (10.3)   512MB RAM (1slot), 100GB Hitachi 5200rpm internal drive

    Well...
It was just a bad RAM chip. The stock 512B chip in the lower slot must have been causing the kernel panics. I took it out and put a new 512MB chip in the upper slot and everything works great now. One thing though, the replacement 144pin PC133 chip I purchased wouldn't work in the lower slot, it fit fine although it wasn't as tall as the stock chip. Installed in the lower slot, the Ti Book would make three beep error sound and not start up. Can anyone tell me why it would work in the upper slot and not the lower? Your input is appreciated

  • New update for Community Help application - version 3.5 now available

Hi: just a quick announcement that the engineering team has released version 3.5 of the Adobe Community Help application.  This update is a very significant release that directly addresses a lot of the feedback that we’ve been hearing from the community.  The most significant changes include:
    Feature
    Benefit
    1.
    Tabbed Browsing
Ability to open multiple pages   from multiple sources simultaneously
    2.
    Favorites/Bookmarks
Ability to bookmark your   favorite URLs; note: we prepopulate a set of suggested bookmarks for you   based on the products you have installed.  Users can of course   add/edit/delete any bookmarks that they choose and can organize them via   folders, etc.
    3.
    Search/Browse History
Ability to view previous pages   browsed or search results (including previously used filter options, search   collections, online/offline search status, refinements, and more).
    4.
    Flash Platform ASLR
Ensures developers  only   have to download one copy of the ASR and not separate, multiple copies for   Flash vs. Flex, etc.
    5.
    Revamped local content   download workflow
The entire local content   download workflow has been reworked!  We have removed the pop-up dialog   box and moved the “content update” notification to the footer of the app as   well as the homescreen.  This ensures an uninterrupted workflow for   users who simply want to access content first and foremost.
    6.
    Performance improvements
The team has worked especially   hard on improving the start-up and browsing performance by consolidating a   number of disparate server calls into a single initialization service that is   only performed at launch.  This enables us to cache a number of assets   and reduce network calls/dependencies.
    7.
    Silent application updates
Similar to the changes in the   local content download experience, we have also revamped the update   experience for the application itself!  Going forward, app updates will   be downloaded in the background without interruption to the user workflow.
    8.
    Set-and-forget search options
Search options are now sticky   from session to session – for example, if you check the Search Adobe   Reference check box for  Photoshop, the CHC will remember those options   the next time you open the app. This applies to refinements too.
    9.
    Much more!!
Minimize to sytem tray (for PC   users only); upgrade to Flex 4.1 and AIR 2.5; and many, many other   enhancements, fixes, etc.!
Note: many of these features were part of our earlier 3.4 release – as some of you know, we had to pull down that release shortly after launch due to server/hardware issues. So only a few users were able to update at the time.  CHC 3.5 is now a general release that will support all users and has been extensively tested to ensure robust performance and stability.
To update your app, simply open the Community Help application from your hard disc or visit our download page on adobe.com:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/chc
Please leave your comments/feedback here in this forum -- and feel free to spread the word!

    Hi Mark!
I need to install latest Adobe Community Help silently to our corporate desktops. Are there any command-line syntax to do this and where I can download installer package?
    Thanks.

  • Windows 8.1 will not install WSUS Updates

Hi, I have an issue with Windows 8.1 clients using WSUS.
I have had a GPO set up to apply to All my computers in my domain, majority of them are Win 7 and WSUS is working perfectly, updates are downloaded and installed automatically and when user shut down, they have the install updates and shutdown option.
Settings in the GPO are: auto download and schedule the install everyday at 10am from a local WSUS server.
These settings as stated are working perfectly fine on Win 7 clients and updates are installed with no user intervention.
However, with the Windows 8.1 clients, the updates are downloaded to the machines from the WSUS server but they are not installed on the computer. There is no option to update and restart or update and shutdown they just sit in Control Panel\Windows Update
until someone manually goes in and clicks install updates.
I have installed the required updates onto my WSUS server for Win 8.1
I have ensured the GPO is applying to the machine which it is, i have also tried settings the 'Install during automatic maintenance' option in the same policy and configuring all options under maintenance scheduler and still nothing.
I can see that the settings are applying to machines via RSOP and the settings are set and unchangeable in teh relevant areas of Windows.
Automatic Maintenance runs and the time and date stamp for last run time changes but the updates are not installed as part of this and they are still sat in Windows Updates with the 'Install Updates' button. UNLESS i MANUALLY run the Maintenance process
    from Action Center
Obviously i don't want my OS update plan dependent on users having to manually navigate to install updates and all this works fine on Win 7 clients.
    Any advice?

    Is this related?

  • How do I get a reliable schedule for automatic update in Windows Server 2012 R2?

I don't understand why MS broke the automatic update in Windows Server 2012 R2. In previous versions, I used to set it for automatic updates - Saturdays at 2AM. I can no longer pick a weekly update in the GUI and the time seems to have no impact on its capricious
reboots due to updates.   It might happen 2 days later at noon.   The best option for now is to just shut off the automatic updates but I'm reading this issue has been around since 2012 R1.   There supposedly is a fix/patch for
2012 but it doesn't say if the patch is for 2012 R2 and the automatic updates haven't installed a fix that actually fixes what is broken with the automatic updates.
Why even leave the GUI for automatic updates if it doesn't mean anything?
Is there a simple registry key I can change so updates occur according to the schedule that you created in the GUI?      Please no powershell - worst crutch MS ever created to not fix their own gui.
I'm seeing people have tried some advanced work around using GPO but many said those don't work reliably either on hosts or domain controllers.

  • Lumia 925 Black update minor problem

    Hello,
Just wanted to send feedback about my update experience.
    - I have Lumia 925
    - I have developer account and related MS updates already installed
    - When installing Lumia Black, installation started normally
    - During first reboot my phone got stuck at "goodbye"
    - I did soft reset (screen + volume down buttons)
    - Phone continued updating normally

Have you updated all your system apps following the update? If not, download and install an app called Lumia System Updater and use it to update all the system apps. See if that helps.

  • Several BIG problems installing SO8 update 6 for Windows

Here's my most recent experience trying to update StarOffice 8 for Windows (I'm running Windows XP with latest MS updates and just updated Java to 1.6.0):
    1. Went to the StarOffice/Sun site and after clicking on about 4 links to find the update, was presented by a login screen and after I logged in, had to go through another 3 links. Not smooth.
    2. Selected the Signed update 6 for SO 8 for Windows patch and downloaded that.
    3. Double clicked on the signed patch where upon the I saw the message:
    Invalid or corrupt jar file
    4. Downloaded it again, same result.
    5. Tried downloading the unsigned patch. Double clicked on that and it started up (looks promising).
    6. At one point in the install I see:
The destination folder specified belwo does not contain a StarOffice 8 version.
    The folder is: C:\Program Files\Sun\StarOffice 8\
Note, I've been running SO8 for a while now so I know that it is in fact installed there (isn't this the default install location?). So now what?
As an aside, this has not been a smooth update experience esp. since I also own a Mac and thus have experienced what updates should be like.

regular and while the SO8 are readily visible, the
    ones for SO7 are not.
Using the bookmark means that when there is an update
to download, I quickly sign in then use the bookmark
to quickly return to the download site.Sure, but my point is that with a well designed site one would not have to wade through so many links the first time.
    >
    5. Tried downloading the unsigned patch. Double

I always use the unsigned patch. Why not use the signed patch? It should provide more security.

only thing I can think of is that your failed
installs corrupted something. I would try selecting
the folder and see what happens.I tried selecting the folder and the unsigned patch said that it could not find a program to patch.

  • Some Systems Restarted Automatically after Updates Deployment with Restart Suppressed

I've searched the forum and multiple blogs - but, I'm still confused about what is causing some of our workstations to restart after applying a software updates deployment.
I deployed the Dec 2013 Patch Tuesday updates to a collection of workstations. The deployment was set to:
Not allow restarts outside of a maintenance window (box is unchecked)
Suppress restarts on workstations (box is checked).
There is no maintenance window defined for any of our workstations
On all the workstations, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\...\WindowsUpdate\  values are:
WUServer: http address of our SCCM SUP server
WUStatusServer: http address of our SCCM SUP server
Also, the key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\...\WindowsUPDATE\AU is:
UseWUServer: 1  (which I understand disables the use of the automatic Windows update service)
Some set of workstations automatically restarted shortly after 3:00 am the next morning. Clearly that's the Windows Update Agent jumping in a restarting the systems. However, I don't understand why it would do that. I really don't understand why it would
have occurred on only some of the workstations while others are still waiting for users to manually restart 36 hours later.
All of the workstations are in the same active directory OU - so the same set of GPOs applies to all.
Note: none of the registry keys were set directly in any GPOs - I assume the values were set by the SCCM client.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

  • [Forum FAQ] How to show Windows Update in Control Panel in Clean Installation of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926

    Scenario
If you performed a clean installation of the new Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926, you would find Windows Update is only available in
Settings and is hidden in Control Panel by default. However, Windows Update is still available in Control Panel if it is an upgrade version of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926.
    Solution
After the comparison of the two different version, the differences is the following registry:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled
    In clean installation version:
    In upgrade version:
The method to make Windows Update show in Control Panel in the clean installation of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926:
Edit the REG_DWORD value of IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled from 1 to 0.

We’ve seen a few forum posts talking about changing registry keys to alter the update experience we shipped in Technical Preview build 9926. There are a couple of reasons that we don’t recommend doing things like that.
First, the default experience is what we’ve tested across not just the Windows 10 team, but across all of Microsoft before we released it to you. That doesn’t mean that you won’t still find bugs, but it’s definitely the code that’s been most thoroughly
tested. Changing things back to older versions is risky because the combination of those old settings with the rest of Windows 10 is not something that’s been validated or supported, so we can’t predict the side effects. It’s possible that changing registry
settings related to update could cause a machine to no longer be able to get new updates or Technical Preview builds.
The other reason to avoid changing the default update experience is that a lot of update-related code is actually being re-written in order to scale across the variety of different device types Windows 10 will support. Since Technical Previews are
a work-in-progress, some code that may still be in build 9926 won’t actually ship in the final version of Windows 10 that we provide to all our customers, so trying to re-enable that code temporarily won’t provide a way to accurately assess Windows 10’s update
    capabilities.
We want to hear your feedback! We’re sharing Technical Preview releases early so we can understand exactly how customers are using our software and make sure we are designing our experiences to address those scenarios. The more
specific the feedback, the more helpful it is for us – saying “I hate the new Windows Update UI” isn’t very useful, but when we see “I need to be able to tell Windows Update to grab updates from WU itself and not from my internal corporate server, so the new
Windows Update UI is painful for me”, we can actually understand what changes we could make to solve those specific problems. We can’t promise to fix everything that everyone asks for – and sometimes what one customer wants is exactly what another customer
doesn’t want – but the more you can help us understand why you want something changed, the better we can try to meet those needs.
Thanks for listening, and we look forward to hearing your responses.

  • Nokia suit update sevice is currently unavailable

when i try upgrading my C7, the nokia suit says it's update service is currently unavailable even after 3 days and after updating it to nokia suit v.3.3.86

    Hi all, few comments:
    - first, make sure that you have latest Nokia Suite installed and in use (you can see version number in top right corner of Nokia Suite)
    - check, that Nokia Belle update is available for your product code (you can find list from here: http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/nokia-belle-update/nokia-belle-update-availability)
    - In Nokia Suite, it's recommended to have Tools -> Options "Automatically download software updates" turned on (this way Nokia Suite downloads update packages in background to your PC, so update experience is smoother)
    - Additionally, make sure, that if you have any firewall software in your PC, that Nokia Suite is allowed to connect to internet
    - Additionally, you can in Nokia Suite Tools -> Software updates click "Refresh", then Nokia Suite checks for latest information from Nokia's server
    Cheers,
