10.6.8 Update Disconnects Disk?

Hi. My external USB drive which I use for installation experiments suddenly disconnected and the prompt warning me to eject it first came up. I checked the connections by moving it and by moving the iMac and the quality of the usb cable. The cable is snugged fit and there seems to be no problem with the cable but has anyone experienced their external disks being disconnected after updating to 10.6.8? Thank you in advance.
Gbu.

Ok will check, as of right now I have 82.57gb free, that's plenty of space will check the disk though using disk utility. Also I am now downloading the update from the apple website instead of going through software update

  • Software Update and Disk Utility no longer work (Leopard)

Hello. After upgrading yesterday from 10.4.11 to 10.5.0 then updating to 10.5.1 I find that repair / verify permissions no longer works (it just hangs after starting).
And the same with Software Update, it starts the check then just hangs. Grateful for any ideas!
Overall I am finding Leopard much slower in operation than Tiger. Peter

Create a new admin account with Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts and see if the issue duplicates itself logging into that account. That will say if the issue systemwide, or just localized to the a bad user cache file. If the issue persists in the new user, you can try looking in the System -> Library and Library -> Cache, Applications Support, and ByHost folders for cache files relating to Software Update and Disk Utility. Once you find them, carefully extract them to comparable folders on your desktop you create (i.e. name one systemlibrarycache) so you know where you go them from, and restart your Mac. If the issues go away after two restarts then it is just one set of bad cache files. If the issues return after two restarts, you have something generating bad cache files which needs a more system wide repair tool.

  • Problems running Software Update and Disk Utility

I had automatic updating turned on in the Software Updates control panel, so I believe the system tried to apply the 10.4.6 automatically and somehow failed.
Ever since, when I try to run Software Update it hangs while trying to connect to the internet to get the list of available updates. I tried downloading the installer directly from Apple, but when I try to select a volume on which to install the update, it doesn't list my hard drive.
Finally, when trying to run the Disk Utility, I get an error about how the Disk Utility cannot be started because a background process is not running. I have to Force Quit to exit out of the Utility.
I was able to boot off the Mac OS X 10.4 installation DVD at which point I repaired the permissions and repaired the disk. However, upon restart the same problems remain.
I've seen several other people post about this issue; has anyone found a resolution OTHER than doing an Archive and Install (which I don't want to do if I don't have to?)
Thanks so much for help that anyone can provide!

  • Many of my System Preferences will no longer work after installing Mountain Lion. Software update, startup disk, iCloud, etc. no longer will launch. I keep getting a drop down window saying I must restart system preferences in order to use. No go!

Many of my System Preferences will no longer work after installing Mountain Lion. Software Update, Startup Disk, iCloud, Time Machine, Notifications, etc. no longer will launch even though they do show their icons in the system preferences window. I keep getting a drop down window saying I must restart system preferences in order to use with a "Cancel" or "OK" choice. After I click on "OK" the window just keeps reappearing with the same choices and the pane I wish to use still remains inoperative. Third party preference panes DO work.
Reinstalling OSX Mountain Lion did not help. Neither did throwing away preferences.plist.

    Hi Jeff,
Tried to reply with my iPhone but not easy! Anyway, back on the laptop now. Yes the crash was bad but Tek support at Prism Sound was really good. In the end I rebuilt the whole system on a new disk which took a couple of days with all the plugins, softsynths etc.... but there seemed to be no alternative in my case, and this was agreed with Prism sound as being the only alternative left to me. I still don't really know what caused the crash but ML and Orpheus are both working fine now. Let's face it, you'll have to update at sometime..maybe best to pick some time between projects On balance, I suspect that my problems were unique to my system and that your installation will go ok.
    Hope it goes well,
    Rick

  • Getting firmware update error. disk write error message

i installed the lastest ipod shuffle update and when I try to restore ipod shuffle I get the error message "firmware update error. disk write error" have no idea what to do. ipod does not show up in itunes

ok, someone else with similiar problem, I just opened the box 5 days ago, installed iTunes (the June 2005 version) that came on CD with it, ran iTunes, downloaded some music, plugged in Shuffle, goto download, fails, no device found, can see it under XP ok, goto apple.com to find support FAQ, I then ran up Ipod Updater, thinking that since it was new, firmware must be recent (little did I know ) so I thought do the Restore straight off, it started, then failed with the "disk write error" and havent been able to talk with iPod Updater since, then tried installing iPodUpdater to another PC, no luck, then downloaded later versions of iTunes and uPdater, installed on a 3rd PC, same deal, unable to communicate to Shuffle, rang phone support, spoken to two different support people, finally they agree its faulty (something I figured out 4 days ago) and suggest I return it to Apple for replacement, and fill out a Service Request form, which opened a can of new worms, like there is no "Warranty Replacement" option, lots of questions like Credit Card details and nowhere to actually define that I have a "faulty" or "dead" or Shuffle to return and they obviously did not read the comments, that were requested, as they simply sent docking station in the mail, so now back to square one, trying to lodge a Service Request to "replace" a brand new, dead shuffle. Not having a nice iPod experience here !!, but Itunes is good, although expecting it will take a couple weeks all up before I get a working Shuffle to actually download to. Tried again phone support, to sort out this mess, waited in queue, then line goes dead. Oh Well ... I blame my daughter for this heartache, she insisted on having an iPod.

  • Autowrite XMP  problems - unchanged files are updated on disk

I have experienced the same situation that is described here: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c0581ca/2, namely that files that are not changed by me in LR are updated on disk.
I have a test library that has "autowrite XMP" turned on. What I disovered today wast that when I opened up a folder in grid mode, all files were changed on disk, even though I made no changes to keywords, metadata or adjustments. So, just after opening up three folders and just looking at the images in grid mode, I suddenly got 60 modified files on my disk. This goes for both JPG and RAW files (for RAW I get modified XMP files).

    Hi;
    The problem is solved, touch wood :-);
No, it didn't help to "refresh". But your suggestions made me think along other routes...
First a few words about the application.  The application uses a Database, written in Filemaker 10 pro, which keeps track of hundreds of documents. Document may be added, replaced or deleted (on daily basis). The FileMaker database generates and exports a part of the HTML code (a hierarchic structure created with <li> and <ul> commands) that constitutes one third of the HTML-code required for building a menu. In this way the documents could be accessed over the intranet. Hence, DW is used to develop the web interface, and FileMaker contributes by supplying the foundations of a web menu (all according to standard HTML formating).
Back to the "problem". The FileMaker data base is written in Swedish. In Swedish we have three more letters than in English; abcde...xyzåäö, the three last are a with a ring, a with two dots, and o with two dots. We also use the é (e acute). It seems that Filemaker and DW doesn't like each others way of creating these letters. The solution was to add a piece of Filemaker code that replaces å with &aring; and the same for the other letter ä Ä å Å ö Ö é and É. A solution would, perhaps, to change the character's encoding in the document. But I believe that replacing the "odd" letters is a more stable solution.
This SEEMS to have solved the problem.
    Murray, Thanks for your comments

  • Can't update daisy disk from Mac App Store

Can't update daisy disk from Mac App Store!! What can i do? AppStore wrote You must login in to @@@@mail, but I login to my account!

You must sign in to the App Store with the Apple ID you used to install the app. If you don't recognize the ID, see below.
You installed a hacked app, originally from the Mac App Store. It contains the receipt for a different app, downloaded using an account that you don't control. You need to identify and remove the hacked app.
Important: The app you need to remove is not necessarily the one named in the App Store notice. For example, if the App Store says you need to update "Twitter," the hacked app may be "Angry Birds" or something else entirely. Don't make any assumptions about which app you're looking for. To find it, you have to carry out a systematic search.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kMDItemAppStoreHasReceipt=1
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
In the Finder, press the key combination command-F to open a search window, or select
    File ▹ Find
from the menu bar. In the search window, select
    Search: This Mac
from the row of tokens below the toolbar. Below that is a popup menu initially showing Kind. From that menu, select  Other...
A sheet will drop down. In that sheet, select Raw Query and click OK or press return.
Now there will be a text box to the right of popup menu. Click in that box and paste (command-V).
The search window will show all the App Store products you've installed. Compare those search results with the list of your purchases from the App Store. To see the complete list, you may need to unhide hidden purchases. If any apps were download from the App Store using other Apple ID accounts that you control, sign in to the store under each of those ID's and check the purchases.
At least one of the items listed in the search window is not among your purchases in the App Store. Move each such item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Empty the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Test.

  • SSD Hard Drive NOT updating free disk space!!

So I keep encountering the same problem. The problem is that when I delete items or otherwise empty my trash bin the SSD Hard Drive does not recognize and update the disk space I have just freed. I deleted over 30GB of data and my computer still believes that it only has 3GB remaining and I cannot install new software. I have tried both restarting and shutting down the machine. I feel stuck and now Apple Care is closed...
PLEASE help me if you can. This is extremely frustrating.
    Thanks

    *UPDATE*
I downloaded both "Maintenance" and "OmniDiskSweeper" programs to aid my efforts of recovering my disk space.
I am currently utilizing FileVault. I thought there might be a chance that this was causing the problem... I am unable to deactivate it due to low disk space.
    The OmniDiskSweeper is telling me:
    User -- 3.1 GB free, 222.3GB used, 225.4GB total
SSD -- 3.1 GB free, 109.3 GB used, 112.7 GB total
Is there something strange here? My SSD is only 128GB in size yet my User(FileVault) is reading as 225.4GB in size. I'm confused.
I might have to wait until morning to fix this with Apple... Unless you know how!

  • I purchased snow leopard and got a disk with OSX 10.6.3 but my macbook with intel processor and 1 gig won't update.  It restarts but doesn't update after disk installs

I purchased snow leopard from online macstore in Australia and got a disk with OSX 10.6.3 but my macbook with intel processor and 1 gig won't update from 10.5.8.  It restarts but doesn't update after disk installs.  Do I need 10.6.0 to install first?

Insert the Snow Leopard DVD, restart your MacBook while holding down the C key, this should start your Mac from the optical drive instead of your hard drive. Choose your language and install Snow Leopard. When it's done and you've restarted on your new 10.6.3 system run software update to upgrade to 10.6.8. Done.

Does anyone else have this problem???
    Please help

Try using the apple updater to do a restore. (I had to uninstall the updater and iTunes then reinstall just the updater do the restore then reinstall itunes.)
After it's been restored, make sure you've got music in your library. When iTunes next recognises the restored shuffle it should start to automatically copy music to the iPod. While it's doing this, go in to the ipod optons and tick the 'enable disk use' box.
After doing this you'll need to click the eject button evry time you want to unplug the iPod but at least it should work.

I get the above mssg when I try to sync a photo folder with 5th gen ipod. the music syncs just fine and the ipod is "seen" by the computer. i have enabled the disk.
    let's start with this document:
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod
given that you're getting this when you try to sync photos, perhaps start by checking on the suggestion in the "Corrupt iPod photo Cache" section of the document.
