10.8.1 Server and windows smb issues

Ever since upgrading to 10.8.1 server my windows clients now have issues copying to the share point on the server. "Network error, there is a problem accessing \\SERVER\WORK"
It's only with large file transfers 3GB and above. It also randomly shows the same warning when they are saving projects to the server occasionally and they have to manully reconnect.
Latest windows 7 64bit pro on all clients and latest mac os X on server.
The share point is an attached thunderbolt raid and has all permissions switched off, and is configured to RAID 0. This is backed up hourly by another drive.
Is there anyway of rolling back to lion? I no longer have a lion back up on my time machine.
Anyone else having these issues?

Apple's SMB implentation is weak and buggy.  I feel like I'm back in 10.3 trying to talk to Windows servers.  Those were horrible days.
To Fix.. go to your Mac and check to make sure that it has the correct WINS settings (network, advanced, WINS).  Your server has to be on the same workgroup (domain) as your windows clients.  For some reason, the setting does not stick on your Mac and that setting gets lost.  And that is the bug...
To fix this (second part of your fix).. go ahead and turn off file sharing.  Then add your settings under WINS as stated above, then turn sharing back on and your networking from windows to mac will start to work fine.
Fun bugs... please call Apple about this, so they can follow up. My case number is 357016704

  • Windows 2008 and Tiger SMB Issues

I've been pulling hair out all morning over this one.
We have a new Windows 2008 server for file sharing. We are trying to connect to it via SMB on our network (with AD domain). Works great on PC, works on Leopard, does not work on Tiger.
From connect I type “smb://xxxxxxxx” after a few minutes I get an error: “could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct” which is odd because I haven’t entered any login credentials to begin with.
I’ve been pouring over Google, Microsoft KB and anything else I can come across with no luck. Things I’ve tried.
-Clearing keychain passwords for the server
-Setting the digital signing on the server to disable (most cited fix, but no go for me)
-Setting Sharing and Security model to “Classic – local users authenticate themselves”
-Setting LAN Manager authentication to “Send LM & NTLM – use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”
-Editing the smb.conf file on the mac to no security
-Created the nsmb.conf file on the mac with minauth=none.
-Used Directory access on the mac to add the mac and bind it to the domain.
-Many Many restarts of the server and clients (and running gpupdate.exe on the server)
One thing that DOES work is a trial of ADmitmac… but this is not realistic for us if we have guest users needing to access the share.
I’ve been able to use smb before with tiger and windows xp and windows 2003… but the mac is throwing a fit over the new windows 2008. Also, we can’t upgrade all of our machines to Leopard (which does work) because it will break Quark 6.5.

  • Curious NetBios over TCP/IP issues and Windows SMB shares

    Hi all.
I've got two Win 2003 R2 SP2 member servers on our AD domain. Each has shared network folders on them which are accessed by both Windows and Mac users.
Both servers - lets call them ALPHA and BETA - are identically setup: same hardware, configuration etc. but exist on different subnets.
Alpha has never had a problem with Mac clients connecting to any of its shares.
Beta has, up until recently, only ever had Windows clients, but now has a couple of Snow Leopard Mac clients. When a Mac client attempts to connect via SMB or CIFS to any share on Beta - they get the prompt to authenticate and then "Connection Failed. There was an error connecting to the server Beta. Check the server name or IP address and then try again". Of course the same thing happens when I try to connect by IP.
Curiously, the only way I can get Mac clients to connect to shares on Beta is to go into the network adapter settings on Beta, advanced, WINS and then disable NetBios over TCP/IP. Unfortunatley this breaks some unrelated stuff and I eventually have to go back in and set NetBios back to Default (enabled) and the whole thing screws up again in a few hours time again for my beloved Mac users.
The other server Alpha never gives me any problem with Mac clients, and as I say, they are setup identically. I have been testing this with 10.6.3 clients, not sure if my 10.5 or 10.4 clients are affected.
Can anyone offer some suggestions as to why my shares aren't accessible to my Mac clients on both servers?

Generally it is the browser service that populates network neighborhood. This technology is no longer used with newer OS like server 2008, windows 7/8.

  • Windows 2008 Server and Windows 8 clients

    Hey Guys,
I have had this problem for sometime now and really need a solution. I have Windows 2008 Enterprise Server running about 200+ terminal services clients. All Windows XP clients are fine, Windows 7 clients have issues when they get an updated version of
remote desktop client(to solve the issue we simply rollback the update), Windows 8 clients cannot connect and use out remote app. The issue stems from the newer version of remote desktop client (on windows 7 and embedded in windows 8) cannot connect to our
terminal server and generates an error and immediately disconnects. The error says "
Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occurred on the remote computer that you want
    to connect to
So my questions are, how can i update my Windows 2008 Terminal server version to support these clients, or do u have migrate to Windows 2012? Or is there a solution to my current problem which will allow my client to connect and use the remoteapps?

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Please follow the below steps and verify result.
LAN manager authentication level settings (Local security policy->Local Policies->Security Options->Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication level).
Try to change it to "Send NTLMv2 response only"
    Snap:
If still face the issue please install this Hotfix.

  • Yosemite Server and Windows 8.1... I know I know

Windows 8.1 Pro (Bootcamped) suddenly can no longer access Mac server file share. See below for details.
Here is the set up in our small office: Several MacBooks, two iMacs, and a new MacMini running OS X Server (with some file shares). Everything is running Yosemite. Because of the software we use, we are also running Windows 8.1 in bootcamp on most of the machines. I know, kind of a convoluted set-up, but it has actually been working great... until yesterday. For some reason, the MacMini stalled, black screened and had to be restarted. During this time we all lost access to the server. When we restarted everything, most people could access the server from their systems with no issues (access from the Bootcamped Windows side) except for me of course.
Previously I had full access and no issues. I was initially getting the "invalid path" error. That went away after restarting again, and now I can see the server but I get "invalid username or password". The thing is, that it's not invalid. And it was working literally an hour before this happened. Also, no other user can log in from my machine with their working username and password. And as I said everyone else can access it just fine from their machines.
The only difference I can think of is that I have Windows 8.1 Pro - and everyone else just has Windows 8.1.
    Things tried:
    -Restarting everything multiple times
-Changing username and password on Mac Server side
-Messing with network security policy settings
    -Renaming PC
-Spent hours researching networking issues on forums
I know networking between Mac and Windows can be challenging, but we seemed to have it working smoothly. My suspicion is that something needs to happen on the Mac side, but I'm not sure what. If anyone has any ideas at all it would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

  • 10.5.6 (Server) and Broken SMB Service

    G'day,
Have notice a few posts with people having dramas with SMB, Apple Australia are fffffking hopeless!! Basically i called them and said we are running a 10.5.6 server and xp/2003 server clients will not connect to it though a mac running 10.5.6 will connect through SMB........the response was well smb must be working and there was nothing else they could do to help! ****** off is an understatement to say the least! any way first thing i did was turn on smb set up a share and then mapped the share on the xp client worked well no dramas......... until you log out and then log back in a popup says can't remap drive (yes i ticked the box to remember the password) thats where it started i think i have mangled my server cause now i can't get any windows client to connect at all they just state the server is not accessible but funny the mac will still connect through smb. I am getting the error below when i try i netbios connection.......the user defiantly exits though and again the user works through smb on the mac looks like authentication problems??? any help would be great.
    Thanks

Is your server bound to AD, and your PC clients as well (probably) ?
    First, stop SMB.
    Then, backup /etc/smb.conf
Then edit it (use nano or vi or emacs via the Terminal. If you must use the GUI then use TextWrangler.
Make sure the file permissions are preserved.
under the [global] section of /etc/smb.conf, make the following modifications (add the entry if it's not there):
    security = ads
    windbind separator = +
; auth methods = guest opendirectory
ie: comment out "auth methods" via the ";"
Start smb and compare. Anytime you make a change in the GUI tools, verify your edits are preserved.

  • Lion, Boot Camp and Windows 7 Issues

Couple of questions regarding Lion, Boot Camp and Windows 7... I never had issues with Snow Leopard and setting up Windows 7 on my iMac (expcept the dreaded black screen after restart, bu got that fixed)
Let me start off with my specs and then I will ask my questions:
    iMac 27"
    i7 Quad Core (1st gen)
    16GB Ram
    1TB HDD
OS X Lion (Fresh Install - Not Upgrade)
All updates for OS and iLife and other installed software:
    Adobe Creative Suite CS5
    MS Office 2011
    Boot Camp 4.0
    Window 7 Ultimate
    Ok... here are my questions.
When I fixed my black screen issues after installing a fresh copy of Windows 7 - I had to install MacFUSE and Tuxera NTFS in order to delete the the stock ATI driver so the second rebot on the install of windows 7 would work and boot correctly. After rebotting into my mac side I now always get this message from Tuxera.
What does this mean? Now in the finder when looking at the computer drives.. It does not show the BOOTCAMP partition...
However, when I resart i can hold down the ALT key and get this menu:
I know this might seem strange to ask, but why are the Macintosh HD and the Recovery HD text smoothed and the Windows text not? Being a design I see the difference and it makes me wonder why this is. (It is almost like the BSOD icon apple used forwhen connecting with shared PCs)... Anyways, I can boot into windows when clicking this drive.
After getting to windows 7 it will not let me run updated. The OS is activated and I have even installed SP1 manually, but it always tells me that the Update service is not running. When in fact it is. I have checked it and it is set to start automatically. I have reset and shutdown my computer more than 10 times... I can't figure out what the issues are.
    Overview:
Why do I get the Tuxera NTFS error?
Why can I see the boot camp partion when manually selecting it form startup, but it does not show in OS X
I can't get Windows to update? Any ideas?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

These various utilities like Tuxera are incompatible with Lion. Partly because MacFuse is incompatible. You need to remove them completely.
As for the Windows partition you might consider using Boot Camp Assistant to remove it. Then make a new partition and install Windows. Remember to use the Windows formatter to format the Windows partition NTFS.

  • New hard drive and Windows 7 issues

I bought a new 1 Tetra Samsung hard drive for my computer since 150GB was not enough. I did this because I need windows partitioned for school. After I installed the hard drive and inserted the Mac OS disk, it would not recognize the hard drive to install. Since then, I have read previous forums such as: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3322843?start=0&tstart=0
Now, the issue is: I went ahead and installed my Windows XP SP2 because I could not get Mac OS to install. I have also downloaded the Windows 7 Professional update from Microsoft and have a Operating Disk on its way in the mail. I am having some issues with sound and camera and probably others that I don't know about yet, like my graphics card and such. What should I do?
    1. Erase HD and install the Mac OS, because I do want this on my computer. Then download updates for Windows 7 bootcamp and reinstall Windows 7 when I get it in the mail.
    or,
    2. Is there a way to fix the driver issues that I am having without having to reinstall windows. I have not tried to partition yet and install mac.
I think it would be best to:
    Install Mac OS
    Download updates
    Bootcamp and Install Windows 7
What do you think and do you have any advice as how I should go about this. Oh, btw, living in a PC world and coming home to my Macbook Pro 3,1 and realizing that it is not as functional is kinda disappointing.
So, I found this site for the sound: http://www.stuffedcow.net/macbook_audio
    And: http://www.cirrus.com/en/products/cs4207.html
I am not sure how to go about installing a new driver. Do I download and save or do I run a certain .exe?
I found this post and was reading, but I am not certain about the right driver for the sound. If I erase the hard drive and install mac. Then, bootcamp and install windows, will I loose my wifi driver? Windows 7 should have that update, but according to this post, it may not.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2534313

If I were in your shoes I would want to understand why I couldn't install OSX on the internal drive before going any further. Without getting past that hurdle you may or may not be successful in your aims, but you are outside mainstream intended ways of running Bootcamp.
    Just a couple of starters:-
    1. Is your internal hard drive (samsung) formatted with a GUID partition table and HFS+ file system? All done in Disk Utility, booted from the Install disk.
    2. The Apple Install disk (plus subsequent Apple Software Updates) has all the drivers Bootcamp needs, without having to find and download from elsewhere. I run Windows 7 64 bit on two Macs and have never had to go and find a driver. (Of course Windows does it automatically for me for other hardware). Sorry if this next point is insultingly obvious, but just to check that you know you can put the Apple Install Disk in while running Windows and Windows find the installer.
You don't say anything what your MBP is or what version of OSX you are running. I am not fully up to date with the inplications of Lion and Bootcamp drivers as there is no install disk. I believe 2011 MBPs won't run XP.
Your comment "Oh, btw, living in a PC world and coming home to my Macbook Pro 3,1 and realizing that it is not as functional is kinda disappointing" implies that you haven't had a Mac very long. Although Macs are easy to pick up and use, there is a LOT to learn about customisation and using it properly and getting the most out of them. I have a number of relatives who still use OSX "out of the box"....it's like driving a car in first gear, and complaining "this car doesn't go very fast". Not a perfect analogy as speed is not the issue here.
Sorry if some of this post is missing the target...just take on board the bits that apply.

  • List of OOTB Reports for SQL Server and Windows Server

    Hi,
I am struggling to find a list of OTB reports from Operations Manager for SQL and Windows. Ideally I need the name of the reports and a list of counters that they report on.
Can anybody give me an idea where I can find this?
    Thanks,

    Peter Carter http://sqlserverdownanddirty.blogspot.com/

    Hi Pete,
I don't believe that there are any Windows or SQL Server specific reports out of the box from SCOM.
However, when you import the Windows (either Server or Client, unsure which you are referring to) and/or the SQL Server Management Packs, within the documentation it will tell you the reports that will also be imported and thus available.

  • Mac OS X 10.5.7 as VNC server and Windows as VNC server

I have found that if a 3rd party client is not happy with the Mac OS X VNC server, then switching to the Vine Server (aka OSXvnc) often times does the job. Vine Server is a free download:

  • Leopard server and windows users

We run a mac + pc environment with some users on macs, many on pcs, and our office server is a windows exchange for email etc. As a multi-location consulting firm, we need to set up a good collaboration system that is hosted internally (to preserve confidentiality) and allows us to create a web-based knowledge creation, sharing and collaboration environment. We have looked at some of the new web services offers, but all are hosted by the providers.
We are considering buying a mac leopard server and have the following questions:
1/ will windows users be able to use the wiki, chat, calendaring and podcast facilities from their laptops without any problems, and will they have the same easy user interface?
2/ does the wiki server enable group collaboration like:
2a/ sending out email notifications on new posts (without changing our exchange server)
2b/ allowing groups to create project and team specific areas
3/ The problem we face is one of adoption. If we can make this as easy as facebook, then lots of people will migrate within 48 hours. But is this possible with the leopard server?
4/ finally, we are based in Singapore and our offices are all in Asia? Do we need a lot of experienced Apple-savvy technical people to create any of these applications, or is leopard server as easy to use as a mac is for a home user?
Any thoughts or inputs would help. FYI, alternatives we are evaluating are jive software's clearspace or basecamp or zoho's web based suites.
    thanks / Suresh

Yes, the web based interfaces work just fine for both OS's, the chat server is using jabber (clients on about every OS) and the calendaring is using the standards based iCalendar format.
2/ does the wiki server enable group collaboration like:

I don't know of functionality to send out e-mail notifications on new posts, but you can subscribe to RSS feeds of things posted in the blog section of the wiki server. I'd need a little bit more information to understand what you're looking for as far as creating project and team specific areas.
3/ The problem we face is one of adoption. If we can make this as easy as facebook, then lots of people will migrate within 48 hours. But is this possible with the leopard server?
On the front end most of this stuff is very easy to use, and is in my opinion even simpler than facebook and such.
4/ finally, we are based in Singapore and our offices are all in Asia? Do we need a lot of experienced Apple-savvy technical people to create any of these applications, or is leopard server as easy to use as a mac is for a home user?
It's pretty easy to set the server up as long as you read the documentation. There's also a lot of resources online if you have problems (like this forum). It would probably be helpful to have someone familiar with LDAP systems and at least some command line usage on the server, but like I said, the documentation is pretty good. You can go read it to get an idea at http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/
    Hope that helps out some.

  • Mac Mini Server and Windows SBS

I am running an aging Dell server with SBS 2003 and wondered whether it would be possible to use one or perhaps two Mac Mini Servers for my needs.  I used to host my own Exchange on this server but I was running out of HD space and it was not easily upgradable so I opted to use Hosted Exchange and use the old server for two things: as a File Server and to run a databse that was written for us in MS SQL Server.  I access the SQL database via RDP from my Dell laptop (docked in the office and connected to two monitors with extended desktop).  I have long been a Mac user at home and have someone else working on my team now who uses a Macbook Pro.  He is currently not using the server at all, but it would make sense for him to be able to access some aspects of the File Server.  My question is whether I can replace this Dell Server with a Mac Mini Server but booting in Windows SBS 2008 or whatever the newer version is, assuming it can still run the old SQL Server database.  Would it be possible to use the same Mini Server as a File Server or better to use a separate one for that or perhaps some other solution for a File Server.  I would like things to be RAID so that I have backups which are required for compliance reasons.  I currently run a nightly backup of the data on teh File Server and the SQL database onto an external drive and also the same back up is done using iBackup as an offsite back up.  I need the developers of the SQL Server database to be able to remote in from their Windows machines in India for periodic updates and system maintenance.  I also would need to be able to access the same database from my laptop in the office, and I believe there are limits on the number of connections one can have with SBS.  I do have VPN access set up via my Sonicwall TZ210 router/firewall that enables me to access the Server if I am traveling with my laptop or am at home on my iMac (although that client has never worked properly) but currently our internet connection is too slow to make the VPN usable when I'm away from the office.
Thanks to anyone who can answer all or part of these questions.  Perhaps I should have one Mini Server for the SQL database and one as a File Server (or could that just be done with a network drive?  I'm not sure I really know the difference - I'm a solo act here, not a systems guy, so am feeling my way somewhat).
