11g on Production

Hi,
How many of you have implemented 11g on production.
Did you face any problems with 11g.
Do we require to change any of the code for 11g.
Thanks

As with any database upgrade.
In theory, you shouldn't have any problems upgrading and you shouldn't need to change any code.
In practice, this is rarely the case. There's almost always some piece of code or some process that doesn't agree with some change made in a major release. Predicting in advance which piece of code or which process will have a problem and what the resolution will be, though, is nearly impossible. You have to try it in a development environment and test your particular application(s) with your particular processes and your particular data.

  • Oracle 11g for production

    Hi,
I have download oracle 11g for linux.
We have one to create a new database for one of our production system.
Shall I create the database on 11g or wait for some time.(we have tested the application on 10g)
    Regards
    MMU

Hans and I seem to be giving the same advice here.
The point I was trying to make was to be careful.
There are probably more important things to consider
rather than acting on the urge for the latest and
greatest technology piece.Yes. Perhaps different phrases meaning the same thing help a person understand better,.
After all, the biggest part of an upgrade process is 'understanding risk' and the biggest part of the DBAs job in production is 'mitigating risk'. For Risk Management, the more perspectives, the better.
That is really our job in a nutshell. And that may be why we often have challenges with developer's - their job is to get new capabilities and due to their time pressures they may not be looking at risks the same way. (Just look at how much exception handling the typical developer does.)

  • SOA 11g in Production Mode

    Hi Everybody
I am going to install SOA Suit 11g for a production mode, any helpfull tutorial or steps?? I googled the net, I didn't find , all are talking about development mode..
    Any help please??

"High Abvailability" and "Clusturing" are general basic requirement for any production installation but it does NOT mean that any system installed in production MUST have "High Abvailability" and "Clusturing" configured.

  • 11g in production?

Anyone knows how far 11g is from production?
    Rgds, Henrik

11g did go to production - JDeveloper 11g that is. Find it here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/index.html and yes, it does not include the SOA components.
The 100-day release is basically the former BEA products rebranded - so OSB (formerly ALSB) and Oracle BPM Suite (formerly ALBPM) are included. This is not a single release. Individual products will be released as they are ready, in the approximate 100-day timeframe and at least by the end of this calendar year.
SOA Suite 11g release is still being reported as Calendar Year 1H 2009.
    Heidi.

  • OSB 11g Installation in production environment

I am trying to install OSB 11g in production mode. But, the problem is its always pointing to the evaluation database, even though I don't require any DB (not using the reporting feature or OWSM). I saw the following workaround and it worked fine, but is it the only way?
This error you will normally see if you use the built in pointbase db with production domains only.
I would recommend you use different database in pointbase or better an oracle database. Work around would be to delete WL_LLR* from you point base and the domain will start with out problem.
If you are not aware of how to delete the table in Pointbase/Derby, then other workaround (I normally use when using production domain with Derby/Poinbase) option would be to open config .xml and delete <jdbc-system-resource>
    <name>wlsbjmsrpDataSource</name>
    <target>AdminServer</target>
    <descriptor-file-name>jdbc/wlsbjmsrpDataSource-jdbc.xml</descriptor-file-name>
    </jdbc-system-resource>
Even if i configure a different DB, but it still pointing me to Derby?
Is this a bug with OSB 11g installation in a production env?
    Thanks,
    Bijoy

    Hello Bijoy,
The evaluation database is provided for use by the sample applications and code examples. If you do not want to use evaluation DB then don't install it.
To not install evaluation DB, while installing weblogic, select custom installation type, uncheck the "Evaluation Database" checkbox ("Server Examples" will automatically get unchecked) and proceed. Now your weblogic will be installed without an evaluation DB.

  • Is 11G Ready for Production Env.?

    Hi,
Our company is planning to upgrade for 11G and we have lots of queries for which i've been in touch with Oracle.
At the same time, i'm gathering users views who are presenly runnning 11g on Production enviornments. I would greatly appreciate your feedback about the 11g database based on your expeirience.
Do you think 11g is ready for production evn. or we should wait for sometime to get it matured, inorder make our productoin enviornment less error prone? Every company has their own way of handling production database and its issues, but a general view would be helpful.
As per my research, 11g is only available for windows & Linux? We were looking for Solaris version for testing, any comments?
Any other comments regarding 11g on production would help?
    Thank you
    Ratheesh

At the same time, i'm gathering users views who are

would greatly appreciate your feedback about the 11g
database based on your expeirience. First 11g release was just two months ago, for only one platform (Linux x86 32-bit). How many of the user base, do you think, are early adopters and how many of those have had this new version running for a while in production? From what I've heard from around here, users/customers/vendors are currently moving from 9.2 to 10.2!
Do you think 11g is ready for production evn. or we

You should weigh in the costs/risks for your business, based on the real, defined needs or requirements for migrating to 11g (replacing a major piece of the infrastructure, with complex dependencies, should not be an easy decision).
We were looking for Solaris version for
testing, any comments?Since you haven't even begun testing, it this related to mid-term planning?

  • Upgrading from 10.2g to 11g by incrementals

    Hello,
I know it's possible to generate a full rman backup in a 10.2g database, move it to another server containing 11g, restore it there and finally do an upgrade.
Since I have to do this to a large database and there are several things involved (apps, servers, network, etc), it could take me a few days and not only one night.
Could I make a full rman backup in 10.2g, restore it in 11g, upgrade, and in the next days go making incremental rman backups in 10g and restoring it in 11g, until we decide to shutdown 10g and use 11g in production. Something like a standby database, but in this case current database would be 10g and standby database would be 11g.

This MOS (Metalink) note discusses restores between different versions:
Frequently Asked Questions about Restoring Or Duplicating Between Different Versions And Platforms [ID 369644.1]
It is very likely that you cannot apply 10g incremental backup to an upgraded (to 11g) database. The upgrade changes data in the SYSTEM tablespace, so I seriously doubt you can apply incremental after that.
Something like a standby databaseWay to go – make a real standby (10G) on the new server. Install the 11g new software and when the time comes - upgrade.
The timing of the upgrade does not depend on the size of the DB, but rather on the number of objects in it. In most cases, the update would take only a few hours, but you should test to find out the timing in your case.

  • Cisco Systems vs "CSIRO" 802.11a and 802.11g infringed upon the '069 patent

    Hi,
any news about Cisco Systems and the "CSIRO" 802.11a and 802.11g infringed upon the '069 patent ?
    http://www.buffalotech.com/products/wireless/
    Dear Customer
As you may be aware, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation ("CSIRO") sued Buffalo, Inc. and Buffalo Technology (USA), Inc. ("Buffalo"), for alleged infringement of United States Patent No. 5,487,069 ("the '069 patent"). Subsequently, CSIRO also asserted its patent against the entire wireless LAN industry, including, Microsoft, Intel, Accton, SMC and Netgear.
In it's lawsuit against Buffalo, CSIRO claimed certain Buffalo wireless networking products compliant with IEEE standards 802.11a and 802.11g infringed upon the '069 patent. Buffalo believed at that time and continues to believe that there are no grounds for CSIRO's allegations of infringement. The United States district court, however, found Buffalo to infringe the '069 patent and enjoined the importation and sale of Buffalo's IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g compliant products.
CSIRO's lawsuits are against the entire wireless LAN industry and could affect the supply of wireless LAN products by any manufacturer, not just Buffalo. The entire industry is resisting CSIRO's attempts to enjoin the sale of wireless LAN products. Recently, Microsoft, 3COM Corporation, SMC Networks, Accton Technology Corporation, Intel, Atheros Communications, Belkin International, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Nortel Networks, Nvidia Corporation, Oracle Corporation, SAP AG, Yahoo, Nokia, and the Consumer Electronics Association filed briefs in support of Buffalo's position that injunctive relief is inappropriate in this case.
During the period of time that the injunction is in effect (10/1/2007), Buffalo cannot offer for sale, sell, import, or use its IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g compliant products in the United States. A list of the products covered by the injunction is attached here . The injunction does not prohibit sales of pre-existing inventories of products by Buffalo's customers. In addition, Buffalo has secured CSIRO's agreement to permit the replacement of defective products under warranty. None of Buffalo's other products are currently affected by this injunction.
While Buffalo believes that it will be successful in reversing the district court's decision and will obtain a stay of the injunction pending a decision on the merits, the Court of Appeals has not yet issued a decision. Should the Court of Appeals issue a decision staying the injunction, you will be promptly notified. After the stay is issued or a favorable decision on the merits is obtained, Buffalo will be able to resume the supply of IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g products
Please rest assured that Buffalo continues to stand behind their products and will continue to support all of our loyal customers as it relates to product warranties, technical support and the like without interruption.

I suspect after reading the patent and the litigation that you mentioned above, that the US District Court decision will be reversed as the patent appears to be very vague in its contsruction and verbage. Furthermore, the intent to hold the IEEE hostage on the ratification of 802.11n will not bode well in the court's eyes. If in fact the case is reversed, I believe that the members of CSIRO will be in danger of lost profits litigation from Buffalo. Stay tuned to this bat channel.

  • Upgrade ASM Oracle 10.2.0.4.0 to ASM Oracle 11G R2 on Windows 2008 SP2

Please advice on procedure or where I can find information on upgrading ASM from Oracle 10G to Oracle 11G R2 (Winwdows 2008 SP2 64bit environment) for mutiple Oracle instances (not a RAC environrment).
The current scenario is as follow:
    - Two oracle homes; one for ASM instance and another for the Oracle Databases (in current case only two oracle instances possiblly more at a later time). Both (ASM and Oracle databases) have the same version of Oracle 10.2.4.0.
The Oracle database home can't be upgraded due to application restricition (Vendor Application not tested on Oracle 11G) but will like to upgrade the ASM instance to Oracle 11G (Oraclle 11G R2).
    Questions:
    - Is is a feasable solution? Can I upgrade ASM instance to Oracle 11G R2 to take advantage of new features? Will the ASM upgrade scenario is compatible with the Oracle Database Instance running Oracle 10G? Any possible issues that I should be aware or concerns?
Is it possible to have ASM running in Oracle 11G R2 and service the need of Oracle database instance running in 10G?
Please advice or where I can obtained information on the matter. Also possibly if someone has done it on Windows 2008 SP2 (not Windows 2008R2).
    Thanks in advance

Thanks so I can upgrade the ASM Home instance and leave the Oracle Databases home on Oracle 10.2.0.4.
I agree with you not just 100%, actually 120%. Fortunately, the vendor is finally understanding by pressure provided by DBAs and Application Teams that they are very behind the curve. It is working and by summer we should have an oracle 11G compatible product.
The same thought went when I was told of their compatability database level.

  • 11g upgrade - CBO Behaviour

    Hello Guys:
We recently migrated from 9.2.0.7 RBO ( Sun sparc, Sol 9.0 ) to 11.2.0.1 CBO ( Sun Sparc, Sol 10). Our experience was really bad. To give a background about the application that uses this Database. It was a legacy application where business rules are driven by triggers. Our testing went perfectly. But once we upgraded the database to 11g in production we started seeing the following problems.
    1. More Physical reads ( Excessive I/O )
    2. DB File sequential read is the top most wait event.
    3. Some of the queries are super fast all of a sudden and super bad all of a sudden. ( Unpredictable Behaviour)
    4. Most of our SQR Reports ( Daily, monthly and weekly ) were consistently slow. Some from 10 - 20 minutes to hours delayed.
    Some of our observations...
    1. 11g consumes roughly double the memory as compared to 9i.
    2. More I/O as the optimizer feels FTS is the best plan.
    3. Bind peeking
    4. Improper use of Histograms by CBO on some tables.
    5. Server Hardware itself was a problem but we got that fixed with a patch. Problems 1 - 4 continued to exist even after fixing this but on a lesser magnitude. We collected the system statistics when the Server was broken and it is as given below.
    SNAME PNAME PVAL1
    SYSSTATS_INFO FLAGS 0
    SYSSTATS_MAIN CPUSPEEDNW 286.726
    SYSSTATS_MAIN IOSEEKTIM 5.942
    SYSSTATS_MAIN IOTFRSPEED 4227.454
    SYSSTATS_MAIN SREADTIM 52667.555
    SYSSTATS_MAIN MREADTIM 89819.59
    SYSSTATS_MAIN CPUSPEED 291
    SYSSTATS_MAIN MBRC 19
P.S. : I know that this terribly bad. But we are unsure if this value is causing any problems now. May be our database is fixed if these statistics are collected again. At least our database performance acceptable if not best. We dont want to get a worst situation from where we are right now.
At one point we felt that changing statistics is what is causing the problem and disabled publishing the statistics. Things look stable now.
I am noticing that some of the critical tables are having stale_stats. Its been a week now and I don't see any performance problems in our system. Our stale_percent is set to default 10% . May be the existing statistics will go bad once once it reaches 30 or 40 % stale data.
My only concern now is at some point we are going to have bad performance because of bad statistics..It might be within two months or after six months. But once we have that problem only possible option to come to our rescue is publishing the pending statistics that we have been collecting so far.But again there are no guarantees that the published statistics will completely solve the problem.
Given this situation we are not quite sure as what is the best approach to manage the statistics in our production databases. All we know is that there are some tables where the optimizer thinks that the stats are good but in the actual case it is not. We have to identify these tables and manage statistics on them differently and let the automatic statistics collection get published regularly for the rest of the database.
Is there a concrete approach to identify these objects? And how about the impact of bad statistics.
