16:9 to 4:3 letterbox; how?

Hello,
I have a video project in 16:9 format that I want to post to Youtube. As they only support 4:3 aspect ratio, I have to export the video letterboxed. Here is what I do:
File/Export/Using Quicktime Conversion
I use Quicktime format, go to settings/size and change Dimensions to 640x480 as this is the preferred resolution when posting videos to youtube. I check the Preserve aspect ratio using Letterbox. In Compression type I use MPEG4 Video.
The result is squeeshed 4:3 with little bit of pillarboxing.. What am I doing wrong?

Tip: No matter what you do it is typically going to look crap, well at least I haven't found the magic settings that YouTube's Flash convert likes to keep the quality.
Try the MPEG-4 presets 320x240 2400bps then select aspect to letterbox which keeps the 16:9 look and feel, but still not sharp and some artefacts. Elgato presets also work but blurred and some artefacts. These both look great on the computer but again crap on YouTube because of the wacked out encoding and dimension processes going on at their end.
Here is a couple of links for reading;

As you can see I am yet to be happy with YouTube's quality

  • Letterboxing: How long does it take?

I just uploaded 1hrs worth of video clips into iMovie HD project. Did a save of the project and then quit. What it did was automatically start "Letterboxing. Please wait. This may take a while". Now several hours later its still at it.
What is letterboxing? Do I need it? How long does it take to complete? If I kill it will it screw up my video clips that I just imported into a project?

Yes, this will screw up your video clips unless you intended for it to be letterboxed. Letterboxing refers to the black bars that are added to a wide screen movie when it is showing on a non-widescreen monitor. Most likely, you created a non-widescreen project in iMovie HD, and imported widescreen video. iMovie is now busy changing every frame of your video to fit. Start all over with a new wide project, then import your clips again.

  • Combining cropped 3:2 and 16:9 footage in 16:9 sequence, how letterbox?

I SWEAR I have searched through the posts (which contain a lot of 16:9 questions, to be sure) and have not found the answer.
From an HD shoot, I have 16:9 footage imported as DV and I've edited it into a 3:2 sequence with the Anamorphic 16:9 box checked in the settings. Also in the sequence are actual 3:2 clips, which I've cropped to fit the 16:9 aspect.
This is the offline edit (eventually we will recapture the footage uncompressed and export for HD 16:9 deliverable) but I need to create a DVD to show the client. I've tried copying the whole 5 min sequence into a sequence w/o 16:9 checked, then checking the box and resetting the aspect in Distort settings. Frankly, I think I'm missing something.
i need a 3:2 aspect Quicktime movie to export to DVD SP that has the 16:9 footage and 3:2 footage letterboxed - how can I do this? How much reedting is involved? I only have about 24 hours to solve this, so any help would be appreciated.
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you.

    Tá fáilte romhat.
Did you create a 16:9 project in DVDSP? If you did and your material looks stretched vertically in the DVDSP viewer, make sure your asset is flagged as 16:9.
You won't see any letterboxing in DVDSP or in DVD Player as they will just display a 16:9 format screen.
Letterboxing of 16:9 material is done in the DVD player if the DVD player is set up for a 4:3 display. If the DVD player is set up for a widescreen display no letterboxing will be done. This is how it should be. So if you author your DVD properly you needn't be concerned about how it will display on 4:3 TVs as this is the DVD player's job.

  • 16:9 sequence problem

I just put two sequences together and exported them both for the web.
I noticed in the clips that one has a letterbox around it and is not in the correct aspect ratio, which should be 16:9.
The other sequence that was exported is 16:9 with no letterbox, how it should be.
I tried changing the sequence setting for the incorrect one and it just squeezes it more! I also tried copying and pasting the wrong sequence into the other and that didn't work either.
How do I remove the letterbox and get the sequence in the correct aspect ratio? Ahh don't know how it got like this.
The clips are from a Panasonic HVX200 in 720p24pn

Adjusting the scale works, but I'd have to adjust EACH clip, and there's tons of cuts.
Asuming you haven't done rescaling on some clips you can adjust all clips at once:
    -Select All
-Remove Attributes (=Command Option v) > select Distort > OK
Or if you need a special setting on all clips:
    - Set the setting in the Distort-controls in the Motion tab for one clip.
    - Copy the clip (Command C)
    - Select all other clips
    - Paste the Attributes of that clip only. (OPTION V) > Select Distort > OK

  • Still bad video quality

even is catalyst cs 5.5 two of my problems do not resolve.
bad video quality in fullscreen. i have some videos for offline view (768x576 @ 2600 kbps) but still fullscreen view is messed up, all blocky, not proper video interpolation. in vlc or any other player the flv file looks fine!
the videos also have a 4:3 ratio and show white borders in fullscreen on a 16:9 screen in letterbox, how can make the borders black?
    is there any solution?

    Hi
    as example
Creating a PAL movie in iMovie HD 6 then import this into a NTSC iDVD project
    • Works but with a losy quality
I do use JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 and let this do the PAL to NTSC conversion
Now burned as an NTSC iDVD project
    • Best result possibly without buying PRO-applications for $$$$$$$
This way should work the other way around too.
Most modern PAL DVD-players can playback NTSC (if TV is old in Bl/W)
Most modern NTSC DVD-players can't playback PAL
If playbacked on a Mac PAL or NTSC is of no interest.

  • Convert 16:9 to 4:3

I'm really confused with aspect ratios. Heres what I'm trying to do. I've got a piece of video that is 1280 x 720 in HD NTSC. In Final Cut Pro what is the best way for me to scale, crop or convert to 4:3 SD (720 x 480) without distortion and without letterbox? If I wanted letterbox how would I do this? Is this better done in Compressor? If so how?
    Thanks!!!

  • Story Button Acting Strangely

    Hello
I am making my umteenth recital DVD for the 2009 season, and I have encountered a problem that I cannot fathom or solve.
I have a master track with the entire recital and have created stories for each performance. I have a menu with 33 buttons, all of which work as designed, except one. This miscreant, when activated, puts the player into stop mode. If you hit the play button, the player starts over at the beginning of the disk. The target is set properly and all of my usual troubleshooting efforts have failed.
Any ideas what the gremlin is? Is there a limit to the number of buttons on a standard no frills menu?
    Thank you

By any chance when you simulate are you using your mouse? I just realized that if navigation was not set for the last two buttons, they would never be accessible on a DVD Player via the remote, so when you say they are not working, and if they are not highlighting, that could be it. (Actually thought of that after I wrote what follows, because I realized that this could be what you mean by not working. Take a look at the navigation and check by using the controller in Simulator and not the mouse.)
Now the part I did write before the part above:
You can delete PAR and items should be rebuilt, for instance if you have your m2vs in a folder called "M2VS" there will be PAR folder in there. Take a look in your destination preferences to see where the various items are being written, PAR and MPEG folders (unless those are actual folders you created and put things into) should be deleted. FWIW, as a matter of course, I never use either of those as names for folders.
    31 is strange, SD 4:3 is 36 buttons, 16:9 is 18 (12 with Pan & Scan/Letterbox), HD 4:3 48 and 16:9 24 (16 with P&S/Letterbox)
How are you making the menus, using a template or other item?
How are you burning the DVD? Sounds like something else may be going on. This is a SD DVD and not a HD DVD? Can you open up the VIDEO_TS folder in Apple DVD Player and does the project work properly, including all the buttons?

  • How can I get AirPlay mirroring to fill widescreen? It works automatically for apps built for apple tv, but not Hulu Plus, for example, which letterboxes.

Airplay mirroring works great for apps (mostly video-related ones) with native Apple TV support, but for other apps - most notably Hulu Plus, it will only show letterbox on my 16:9 plasma TV. Again, my movies, tv shows and in-app videos like in CNN where there's a built-in AirPlay support will fill my widescreen, but apps that don't (Hulu Plus, games, photos) will not. Do I have to change the aspect ratio on the tv to 4:3? Will changing the resolution help.
How can I get mirroring to fill the entire tv screen, regardless of the app? Thanks.

Guys. Let's not get confused here.
-AirPlay mirroring feature 'mirrors' what's on your iPad 2 or above or your iPhone 4s on to your big TV via the Apple TV black box.
-Video apps that stream video (like native YouTube app) uses AirPlay which is different to mirroring.
-When you use the 'mirror' feature you get black bars all around (left/right & top/bottom)
-There are Games that use the full screen via the AirPlay mirroring feature and there are games that don't. It depends on the Game. For example download Asphalt 7:Heat and you'll notice you get widescreen display on the big TV but if you play Batman or Max Payne or others that don't support AirPlay mirroring then it you get black bars left and right.
-What's neat about the AirPlay mirror feature is that when you play Asphalt 7 with 'mirroring' set to on, the race is shown on the TV while your iPad shows something completely different (the route in real time with your rear view mirror)
-The Apple iPhoto app on your iPhone 4s or iPad 2/3 with AirPlay mirroring feature on you get a different experience. All of a sudden it goes full screen, and you are presented with their iPhoto logo.
-Those who have the first generation iPad don't have mirroring capabilities so the Asphalt 7:Heat games feature aren't available or the iPhoto app features. With iPad 1 you can only stream video or music or image slideshow (which all stream full screen). iPad 2 and iPad 3 can also do this but with the added benefit of 'mirorring' what is displayed on the iPad screen. Some apps take advantage of this, some don't.
There are no special setting on Apple TV to get rid of the black bars. You may be able to change the zoom settings on your actual big TV.
Hopefully this will clear this all up. I have the iPad 1 and recently upgraded to the new iPad 3. I also have an iPhone 4s. Same issues.
I don't think the AirPlay 'mirror' feature has developed fully yet. It has it's limitations but also has its advantages.

  • How to Make Letterbox

I have a Canon GL1 camera that records in SD 4:3 format. When I make a DVD my DVD player coupled with my 16:9 HDTV stretches the video to fill the screen and distorts everyone (they look broader). I think a letterbox format would present a more normal view but I don't know the best way to do this. I don't see any control on my DVD Player remote to select letterbox. Do I set up FCE 3.5 to make the letterbox, or do I do it in Compressor 2 which I have as a stand alone application or do I set it up in DVD Studio Pro 4 which I also have as a stand alone application?
I have done a limited amount of searching on the Internet and checked Compressor Help file without much clarification.

SD material would look pillarboxed. Black bars on left and right. If the DVD is being created correctly then the problem is in the TV set. There should a control for how it handles SD material. If there isn't, it's possible it only has a stretch function. You should look at the manual or google your TV model.

  • How to remove letterbox from a 16:9 video in Premiere Elements

I imported widescreen DV video via FireWire into Adobe Premiere Elements 8, but it displays with letterboxing (black bars on top and bottom). How do I get rid of this? The frame size is not editable in Project Settings.

Unfortunately, PrE does not allow one to make changes to a Project, once it has been setup. You will need to setup the Project to match your source footage, your Assets, 100%. Otherwise, issues will ensue.
If needed, the free utility, G-Spot can be used to determine the attributes of the footage. Frame Size, Frame Rate and PAR is very, very important.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - even PrPro has just added the ability to "change horses in mid-stream," because it uses Sequences, which are like mini-Projects within a master Project. Before CS4, even with the Sequences, one had to get the Project Preset correct, before starting. Now, one can just do a new Sequence with new Presets, and Copy/Paste the mis-matched footage into it.

  • How to export 16:9 for auto 4:3 letterboxing?!

I am editing for a TV show and the TV station says that I need to have it formatted for 4:3 and 16:9 BUT they said they only want it in 16:9 HD and to export it so that it will automatically Letterbox when played on a 4:3 TV! Now I don't see how that would be something I would do in exporting, but more something they would at the TV station! I'm not sure if anyone has any ideas or any knowledge it would be incredibly helpful!

You have a lot of mixed messages here, but the most critical is "they said they only want it in 16:9 HD".
Basically you'll deliver 1920x1080 or 1280x720 depending on the station.
The reference to "have it formatted for 4:3 and 16:9" likely is for title graphics. This is called center-cut safe, keeping graphics inside a 4:3 title safe area within the 16:9 image. Center-cut safe is almost always a requirement for broadcast since the image can be viewed in several different ways depending on the station and receiving television settings (which are out of your control).
A 16:9 HD image will automatically letterbox on a 4:3 television IF the owner of the TV has set it up to do so (typically the default). Neither you nor the TV station has control of how the owner/viewer sets up a TV. A 16:9 HD file can not be created to automatically letterbox, that is a function of the TV.
Now, one situation that may change all these interpretations of your mixed messages is delivery in Europe. I believe Europe prefers a 16:9 image squeezed into a 4:3 anamorphic format that when displayed on 16:9 TV is widescreen and on a 4:3 TV is letterboxed. The main point of confusion between that possibility and your statement above is the 4:3 anamorphic can NOT be High Def.

  • How to avoid letterboxing & pillars in output of slide show as wmv movie in Premiere El 10?

I have created a slide show with both stills (using pan and zoom) and videos. Both in the Preview monitor in Premiere and in the exported movie I get letterboxes and pillars (black lines top and bottom, and on the sides). I know there is a lot going oh here, but here are a few relevant details.
    Premiere 10 - (64-bit)
    Running Win 7 Home Premium
Still images have various aspect ratios, but mostly I tried to keep to 1000x750 pixels for 4:3 aspect ratio
    Videos are 320x240
Output is to WMV (720p HD movie) - this is the only choice for a WMV movie and I cannot find ANY output that matches the 320x240 format of the videos.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
This is my first post in the forum. I did search the previous discussions, as I'm sure this has been discussed befor, but found nothing.
Please forgive if I'm in the wrong poace or any other stuff like that.
    Thank you

Thank you both for your replies - very helpful.
This was/is an attempt to put together a demo for a project, to be shown on a computer. - by someone who obviously did not know what he was doing, namely, me.
Can you tell it was my first attempt?
Yes, the preset was DV 48kHz, which is apparently 4:3, right?
The tiny video is what I was given to work with (from VideoBlocks) Maybe not a good idea to even try. The still images were various sizes and I resized them to 1000x750, on a recommendation from someone on how to get good 4:3 resolution. So that was not such a good idea either.
Since then, I have tried a couple of experiments.
BUT, I just tried a new video with images resized in Photoshop to 1280x720, with the preset at DV widescreen and output at 720p HD. Hey - it is almost a success. The letterboxes and pillars are negligible - about 1/8 of an inch.  Thank you both so much.
So would you insist on higher quality video to work with?  I have until next Wednesday. Lots of time. Sounds like there is not much hope for using the 320x240 video.
Thanks very much for your suggestions and patience.

  • How do I get rid of letterboxing in iMovie 9?

I just imported some clips from my camera, and found that iMovie 9 automatically letterboxed them.
    I don't want them letterboxed!
I should add that I was using an older camcorder.  What is weird is that with my previous newer camera, I never got the letterboxing in iMovie 9.
Now it seems that using the older camera has somehow activated a letterboxing feature.
How do I turn that feature off?   I couldn't find anything about letterboxing under iMovie 9 preferences.  Thanks.

Turns out that it's the camera's fault.  This is a very old camera and its default is letter-box, which it terms "Cinematic."   You can get rid of it, but then you just end up with a square aspect ratio.

  • How to letterbox 640x480 video in imovie 09

    this sounds simple, doesnt it?
The problem is that i am importing video from my 3gs into imovie09... i have told imovie to letterbox it which it does as i drag the movies into the timeline, but then when i render it i want to apply the sharpening filter so i have to chose the resolution to export using quicktime...
there i am presented with 640x480, 768x576, 1280x720 and higher... the latter two are the only "widescreen" formats.
yes, i am losing some video by forcing letterbox but if i chose the upscale the video using the 720 and 1080 formats i am stretching the video so much it looks terrible.
so how can i without re-encoding the video in imovie HD force this letterbox format on the video without upping the PIXEL count and making the video look horrible?

    no, you cant't.
the socalled 'thumbnails' are the previews you see while editing/skimming, so, essential for iM09.
