Combining cropped 3:2 and 16:9 footage in 16:9 sequence, how letterbox?

I SWEAR I have searched through the posts (which contain a lot of 16:9 questions, to be sure) and have not found the answer.
From an HD shoot, I have 16:9 footage imported as DV and I've edited it into a 3:2 sequence with the Anamorphic 16:9 box checked in the settings. Also in the sequence are actual 3:2 clips, which I've cropped to fit the 16:9 aspect.
This is the offline edit (eventually we will recapture the footage uncompressed and export for HD 16:9 deliverable) but I need to create a DVD to show the client. I've tried copying the whole 5 min sequence into a sequence w/o 16:9 checked, then checking the box and resetting the aspect in Distort settings. Frankly, I think I'm missing something.
i need a 3:2 aspect Quicktime movie to export to DVD SP that has the 16:9 footage and 3:2 footage letterboxed - how can I do this? How much reedting is involved? I only have about 24 hours to solve this, so any help would be appreciated.
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you.

Tá fáilte romhat.
Did you create a 16:9 project in DVDSP? If you did and your material looks stretched vertically in the DVDSP viewer, make sure your asset is flagged as 16:9.
You won't see any letterboxing in DVDSP or in DVD Player as they will just display a 16:9 format screen.
Letterboxing of 16:9 material is done in the DVD player if the DVD player is set up for a 4:3 display. If the DVD player is set up for a widescreen display no letterboxing will be done. This is how it should be. So if you author your DVD properly you needn't be concerned about how it will display on 4:3 TVs as this is the DVD player's job.

  • Downsizing 5d mkii 1080p and Gopro 720p footage into same 720p sequence

    Hey guys,
I'm new here and have looked around on the forums and FAQ's for answers but have turned up with nothing.
Basically I have filmed footage in 1080p with a Canon 5d mkII and also 720p footage with two GoPro's.
I want to export a 720p video using both of these resolutions.
What I had planned was downsizing the 1080p footage (already in the sequence) to 720p to match the rest of the footage and can't seem to work out how to do it!
My current attempts have the 720p footage come up as a smaller  'box' in the final clip, where you can still see the 1080p footage below  it.
In other words, the 1080p footage isn't downsizing, and is staying at 1080p.
If anyone could help me, it would be much appreciated!
    Using Premiere Pro CS5.5
    Cheers

It looks exactly the same quality, just compressed!
That's rather a contradiction in terms.  Most compression types aren't lossless, and certainly the options from Handbrake aren't, which means some level of degredation will be introduced in the process.  It's not good advice to convert already heavilly comrpessed footage for editing, unless you're converting to a lossless format.

  • Mixing 16:9 Anamorphic and 4:3 footage in the same sequence

I have a sequence that combines 16:9 anamorphic footage with some older footage shot in 4:3. In other sequences that use the 16:9 footage, it looks fine and I was able simply set the properties on the sequence to render the 16:9 correctly. However, in the mixed sequence, the canvas is defaulting to a 4:3 ratio and then letterboxing the 16:9 footage. I'd prefer to keep the canvas at 16:9 and then crop then resize the 4:3.
How does one change the canvas aspect ratio? Setting the sequence properties to anamorphic has no effect nor does changing the rendering preset.
I also tried creating a new sequence, but if I copy in any of the 16:9 segments from the mixed sequence (leaving out the 4:3 bits), the canvas changes to 4:3 again. It's as if somehow the 4:3 canvas size is now associated with the 16:9 material from the mixed sequence.
I apologize in advance if there is an obvious answer to this.
    Thanks,
    Nathan

Create a new sequence. Then drop a 16/9 clip from the browser, into the timeline. Final cut will ask you if you want to make the timeline the same as the footage. Say yes. Then you'll have a 16/9 sequence. You can then copy and paste the other footage from the timeline you already have, but you'll probably have to resize everything.

  • I have cropped a clip and now want to take other clips from the remaining footage.  But the discarded footage which contains other desirable clips is not in Trash.  So, where did it go so I can access it?

I have cropped a clip and now want to take other footage from the discarded remains of the clip.  But the discarded footage is not in my iMovie trash.  Where did it go?  And how do I rescue it so I can edit the other short clips from it that I need?

I don't know how it did it (because I cannot duplicate the results) but one time the finder found a folder on my main hard drive called/Volumes Under that folder are folders called the names of previous external hard drives with numbers following them. /Volumes does not appear on my Mac hard drive. Obviously it is hidden somewhere. But it has content. Most of the time, the file names in that content don't show up in a search, but obviously I have found the content and deleted one huge folder of stuff it has saved. When I found the folder, I immediately opened it, where I found this stuff. But unfortunately when it opened in the search window I went directly to the "drive" folder and had no back arrow, so I couldn't get back to the search that found the content and the mystery /Volumes folder. The finder information window does show /Volumes directly off of the main drive (its not in any other folder). Anybody know where this stuff is hidden or how to get to it.

  • Combining 16:9, 24p and standard NTSC in FCE

Please forgive the newbie ignorance, but I seem to have gotten myself into a severe predicament with no practical way out. Here's the situation:
In a rush of naive enthusiasm, a desire to NOT indulge my usual tendency toward perfectionistic procrastination paralysis, encouragement by others—including experienced advisors, albeit one with Windows/Avid-only experience and the other a successful, working director/screenplay writer with a minimal understanding of technical issues—and finally, getting snowed by glowing sales brochures with hidden fine print that glossed over critical compatibility issues, I borrowed a s-load of money and launched my documentary by jumping out of a plane with the following parachute:
    1) Essential outdoor footage (rushed to take advantage of good summer weather) shot at 24p in true 16:9 on a borrowed Canon XL2.
    2) Equally essential indoor footage (and pretty much all remaining future footage) shot in standard NTSC (29.97i? 4:3) on my Canon GL2.
    3) An aging dual 500 G4 that's been expensively brought up to minimal Final Cut Express standards through a series of hundred bucks here, several hundred bucks there steps. (I probably could've bought a new Mac for what I've spent on techno-duct tape for the old!)
    4) A desperate hope that I might find some way to get 1-3 to work together before I hit a rapidly enlarging terra firma!
Lest you think I'm totally nuts, let me say in my defense that I have been experimenting with post-production procedures along the way—first with iMovie until it became obvious it wouldn't do the effects I wanted and now with FCE, which will handle the minimal fancy-schmancy stuff my doc needs. But now based on my fitfully improving understanding of the technical constraints, I believe I've been misled by "false" iMovie and FCE WYSIWYG images that implied I could meld my XL2 and GL2 footage without problem.
To be more specific, I was able to successfully capture the XL2 footage in iMovie through my GL2, or at least I thought I was. I assumed the data, being digital and all, would capture correctly regardless of camera. When I could see it squished horizontally in 4:3 on my monitor, I assumed it had transferred correctly and could then be manipulated however I wanted. After I got FCE, I seemed to be able to capture the two kinds of footage and even put them together (of course, with corresponding letter- and pillar-boxing), but am now thinking I've got a mess underneath what I see on screen.
All of which is to ask, Is there any practical way to solve my problem? My piggy bank is down to its last few pennies, and short of winning the lottery, my immediate possibility of getting more cash is nil. My quixotic goal is to turn this mess into a real (24p, 16:9) movie. (If I can get them combined, I plan to use the discrepancy in quality between the two kinds of footage as an "intentional" effect).
Three other questions: After reading another discussion thread, I got JES Deinterlacer to see if it could successfully convert my NTSC to widescreen 24p. The small clip I used was glacially slow to convert, which is frustrating but could be an acceptable workaround except that it appears the result is severely degraded (which makes sense since the file size is 10% of the original). My original thought was to crop the top and bottom of the 4:3 to fit it in with the 16:9 (instead of stretch it) and have the resulting increasing contrast in resolution be part of the inside/outside "effect." Can JES, or something else, solve my conversion problem? If so, will FCE be able to handle the result?
Second thing is one of my original XL2 tapes was lost so I took my iMovie version and put it back on tape through my GL2. Has this been degraded from the original? What is happening to the 24p, 16:9 data as it goes back and forth from camera to hard drive through iMovie and FCE.
Third is I found several threads that warn specifically against capturing from a Canon camera to a firewire hard drive. I seem to have had no problem so far, but is there something corrupt underneath that I can't see?
Hoping this long post is not too annoying (maybe my mistakes can help others avoid similar ones?) and that there's a miracle out there that'll keep me from crashing and burning in a fireball
    Many thanks, Chris

"There is not quality degradation for digital content upon printing to tape or copy, even from a iMovie version. DV is a already compressed digital material, edited in the compressed format, so you can go far beyond 20 generations of copy without significant degradation.
"It's not exactly the same thing with HDV (because there is a conversion by Apple Intermediate Codec at each capture/print process)."
Thanks, Michel. I guess I'm still confused about the gist of the capture process, which seems to be what led me into this mess in the first place. I understand that the raw data is digital and that it won't degrade if it's copied, which is what I thought capturing was in essence. But if DV capture is standardized, what—if it's not some kind of codec-translation filter—makes the resulting media files different depending upon which application (and camera?) is used. (I know cameras can record differently—thus my XL2/GL2 discrepancy—but do they also behave differently in the capture process?)
The other explanation I can think of for the differences in capturing between iMovie, FCE, and FCP is that Apple has simply restricted the aspect ratios and frame rates each app handles as part of the justification for differing prices. I had thought they could each accept the same raw footage but what they did with it afterwards was increasingly sophisticated and therefore costly.
Live and spend lots of money to learn!

  • How can I combine the nav bar and menu bar on the same line to save space?

Firefox v29 seems to be a huge step backward in customization. I need to save space for content so previously I turned off tabs and combined the menu bar and nav bar on the same line. The url space is way too long anyway. Now with v29 all my customization is gone and I cannot get it back. I can no longer move items on the nav bar to combine it with the menu bar. Why was this done? It only limits my ability to customize my browser? I am very frustrated that you took a great browser and ruined it.

I get it that Firefox has changed, but the change is for the worse. It makes it impossible to customize menus as I had before v.29.

  • Mixing "letterboxed" and "squeezed" footage in the same sequence

This is a good one. All footage shot on a DVX100, which has 2 ways of getting widescreen: squeeze and letterbox.
We shot 2 tapes worth of footage three weeks ago using squeeze for widescreen. I have since made a rough cut of all that footage.
Today, we shot the remaining scenes, but they were shot letterbox for widescreen (due to a communication errore between myself and the DP).
We discovered this halfway through shooting today, and decided to keep shooting letterbox because it will be easier to convert the squeezed footage to letterbox than vice versa.
Oh, and the squeezed footage is all outdoors, the letterboxed all indoors, so matching isn't an issue.
    My question(s) is (are):
How would you deal with this (reshoots are out of the question)?
Is there a simple way to convert the footage I've already edited without losing the edits?
Is there a magical fix that will fix it without any effort on my part? (just kidding about that last one)
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the tips!
What is your final output hoping to be? Do you need
anamorphic enhancement? (ie. you're outputting to
DVD, or for display on a 16:9 monitor, or for film)
It will be on DVD ultimately, but projected digitally for the premiere and possibly sent to festivals. It just needs to be widescreen, enhanced or not.
I take it your existing sequence is 16:9?
    Yes.
    If so...
    1. Open a new 4:3 sequence in the timeline.
    2. Drag your existing 16:9 sequence into the 4:3
sequence but don't let go of the mouse
    3. Press and hold the Command key, then release the
    mouse.
    4. The contents of your 16:9 sequence should
now be inserted (as letterboxed clips) into the 4:3
    sequence
I'll try this when I get home.
Or, when you meant 'convert the footage,' where you
    talking about the source files?
If it's as easy as those steps, great! However, the two formats need to output to DVD together. I assume this will simply add more render time to that end?
I don't care about the source files if I can ultimately output it harmoniously.
    Thanks again!

  • Russian and English combined Index Group Title and sort order

How should I create the combined index Group Title and sort order in Russian and Greek documentations?

The final product one Russian manual which contains some English Index marker ...
    And what is the problem?
You can control the sorting by placing a [...] tag in the Marker Text, such as:
    [Сплайн] Spline
The term(s) in the brackets are used only for sort. What appears in the Index is the following text.
Or you can just edit the Marker Text.
But it sounds like there might be more than one question here, re: Group Titles.

  • How should I combine 30 fps clips and 24 fps clips into a project?

I have both 30 fps footage and 24 fps footage and I would like to create a project that has both. Should I create a 30-fps project or a 24-fps project? Which one will look better?

A little bit. Mostly just playing around.
I would start with 30fps so you can preserve the higher frame rate.
Another consideration is how much of your content is 30fps and how much is 24fps.
If you're doing a lot of this kind of thing you may find the FinalCut Pro X handles it better.

  • Is there any combination of OS Lion and iTunes that can run radio streams without cutting (rebuffing) it for at least 3-4 hours?

Hello! Is there any combination of OS Lion and iTunes that can run radio streams (primarily pls-streams) without cutting (rebuffing) it for at least 3-4 hours? I am running Lion (10.7.1) on an early-2011 MacBookPro with iTunes 10.3.1 and I am frustrated, because it will cut the stream at least once per hour (it's totally random), while my older MacBook, running Tiger with iTunes 9.2.1 doesn't have any such problems ... Any solution?

Maybe you should upgrade iTunes to the current version - 10.5.3 - and upgrade Lion to 10.7.3.
