16 Bit PSD Files Not Compressed

Something that's not new, but that I've not really noticed before...
Image compression in Photsohop CS6 doesn't seem to be effective on a 16 bit PSD when Maximize Compatibility is turned on.
For example, with Maximize Compatibility set to Always, if I create a new file 6144 x 4096 pixels x 16 bits/channel with a pure white background, and add a single text layer that says "This is a test", then save the file, it's 144 megabytes.  Zipping that same file into a .zip archive results in a massive reduction, to 245 kbytes.
Sure enough the saved file size goes down if I set Maximize Compatibility to Never. But even that can be hugely more compressed by zip (down to 88 kbytes).
This implies the failure to compress is happening on the flattened preview.
If I change to 8 bits/channel and save that same document either way it's about two and a half megabytes, differing only a couple hundred kbytes between Maximize Compatibility Always vs. Never.  In this case, apparently the flattened preview is being compressed nicely.
These are my file handling preferences.  Note that I do NOT have [ ] Disable Compression checked.
Doing a bit of spot testing, I believe this is nothing new - it has been the same in recent past versions (e.g., Ps CS5, CS4).  I've just never noticed that saving 16 bits/channel data yielded such huge files (because I always diaabled compression anyway), but apparently it has been the same all along.
No problem here - this is just a curiosity to me, as I have a fast disk array and these saves are all quick enough.  I choose the "Always" maximize compatibility setting because I have a viewer (IrfanView) that I use for quick previews that won't read files saved with Maximize Compatility disabled.
I suppose it does beg the question:  What prevents Photoshop from doing the Flate compression on the flattened preview in a 16 bits/channel PSD file?  Was there an old version that couldn't decompress such files?
-Noel

Thanks.  That makes sense, especially considering 16 bit data is really 15 bits plus a hair, so an all white background would look, to an RLE compression scheme, like (in hex) 80 00 80 00 80 00 etc. - i.e., be incompressible.
Is there any kind of compression you could invoke that would work in recent versions of Photoshop?  I'm imagining a "More Compatible" setting, which could give decent compression for a 16 bit file but not necessarily be "Completely Compatible" with everything ever made out there.
I need to ask the author of IrfanView if he's working on a multi-layer PSD decoding scheme.  I know there are people who have done it (the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack provides previews and thumbnails for Maximize Compatibility: Never files, for example).

  • Multi layered 16 bit psd files appear mangled in Aperture

    Hello everyone,
I have started using Aperture as my main organisation program but I have some issues with its integration with Photoshop. In paricular when I open my file using 'open in an external editor' in Photoshop it works fine until I do some multilayer editing. The image then appears weirdly mangled usually with only one layer showing and the rest left as black. On occasions I get some weird effects distortions ot parts of other images etc. I think the problem appears when the layer has some transparency but I need to check that further.
I am using 16 bit psd file and I have checked maximize compatibility in Photoshop. I've also tried to update or generate the preview in aperture with no results. Finally, I tested the same thing on a mac at work getting the same problem so it is not specific to my machine. Note that when I open the file back to photoshop everything is fine so this should be just a preview issue.
I would be grateful for any help,
    Dionysis

Thank you both for your answers.
In the meantime I researched further and found exactly the issue and a workaround. The issue is only with 16 bit psd files and has to do with alpha channels as you both mentioned. Now, I would disagree that this is acceptable behavior Leonie. In my opinion this is a serious bug but anyways..
A workaround is to place an all white alpha channel exactly after the RGB channels and BEFORE any other alpha channel as suggested here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2708851?start=0&tstart=0
This is working (contrary to what is said in the above post) but be patient with the previews as they take ages to update.
Trying to automate this I've made an action to create the alpha channel and used the script manager to run it when a new document is created. Now this does not work because the document is created in Aperture when pressing 'open in external editor' and the event is skipped. I instead had to associate the action with 'open document' which of course means that I will have an alpha channel created every time I open a document..
I made the action so it names the channel 'bug fix' so I will just have to clean up every now and then.. I may choose to activate the action with a shortcut instead and have to remember every time I create a new document.
Anyways, a bit of an annoying bug and seems to be around for quite a while. Hopefully Apple is going to fix it at some point.

  • Why is my .psd file not rendering correctly in ae

Some layers of the .psd document are not rendered correctly. However they are imported.
The strange thing is that when I first move from Photoshop to Illustrator, save it as an .ai file it is rendered properly (in Ae).
I am kind of clueless as to what is causing this issue.
    Kind regards,
    Jelle

Okay if more information is needed, i'll provide. However you may disregard my initial comment about illustrator. It flattens the photoshop layers so I do not have any flexibility in After Effects. In other words, my main question remains: why is my psd file not rendering correctly in ae?

  • Legitimate newly purchased Premiere Elements-10 32-bit install files not available

    Friends:
I purchased an $1100 Nikon camera and the deal included OEM PS Premiere Elements 10.
Legit purchase with a CD and legit Serial #.
Can't install because what is Adobe's fault, not the camera vendor's and certainly not mine.
    Adobe's own published notice:
"The 64-bit version of Adobe Premiere Elements 10 only installs on Windows 7 64 bit. If you have Windows XP 64 bit or Vista 64 bit, it's necessary to install the 32-bit version. Because the Adobe Download Assistant automatically downloads the 64-bit version in error, it's necessary to download the 32-bit version manually through alternate means."
The problem is that the same holds true for installing on XP Pro SP3 and Adobe makes no mention of it in the above admission.
Then, Adobe's own Solutions 1, 2 & 3 for manual download all fail, even after fussing for days over it.
Even Solution 3, the last ditch option, fails perhaps because Elements 11 is out and Adobe has killed the 10 download Ftp sites.
Files I am unable to download from Adobe (without entrapment by so called Free Dowload sites) are:
    http://trials2.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/PRE/10/win32/PremiereElements_10_LS15_win32.exe
    http://trials2.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/PRE/10/win32/PremiereElements_10_LS15_win32.7z
How can I solve my dilemma, being denied my right to learn Elements from a legally purchased 10 and being
forced to purchase 11 instead on top it. Fair?
I am requesting Adobe politely to make it possible to download the Adobe recommended two files withou hassles.
I must mention in this context my own  (and thousands of others') sad experience with Flash updates. Just follow
my own (and others') posts in Adobe forums. Plus, just read the Internet posts along these lines:
"It's impossible to download anything from Adobe. I have given up and I have given up on Adobe products."
Not that I want to, but I am forced into echoing the same sentiment.
    Can anyone help, please ?
    Thanks,
    Pradip A.

    Hello Mr. Wright:
The download now works. Appreciate your help.
The ...7z file is 1.37 Gb long. I have super high speed Fibre Optic Internet connection with Bell. I rarely have the ocassion to download files of this size. After downloading more than 1 Gb, the transfer hung - either at the Client end, or at the Server end. Bell is sending tech Thursday to mitigate some line noise they detected. Hopefully, the stars will fall into the right place before long.

  • PSD files not importing properly into AFX CS5?

I'm having a bit of trouble with After Effects CS5 and Photoshop CS5 .psd files.
Basically I've got a few images that I want to import into AFX as .psd files but when ever I do, all the images show the exact same image, yet when I open them in Photoshop CS5 the image that I made is there so I know I haven't saved over my files.
This occurs wether importing as multiple files or singular. I click the Photoshop sequence option as well as clicking the composition - keep all layer styles.
What am I doing wrong and why aren't my images showing up as individual images but rather all of them being the same one image regardless of what I've imported?
Do I have to import as footage rather than composition?
Thank you and hope that made sense, if not, please ask me to explain as I need to fix this quite fast.
    Thank you.

    Thank you for that.
I've just been importing them as footage and that seems to be working fine as well.
I shall try without the Photoshop Seqeunce ticked.

  • .psd files not opening

I use Photoshope Elements 9 to do scrapbooking.  My desire is to us Dropbox so I can work on my laptop or on my destop.  All of my photos are on my laptop.
I moved some .jpg files, .mob files, and some .psd files to dropbox off of my laptop.  When I tried to open them on my desktop, the .jpg and .mov files were fine.  The .psd files opened the Photoshop Elements 9 program, but gav me the following message, "could not complete your request because Photoshop Elements does not recognize this type of file."
Since the file was made in Photoshop Elements 9, I'm wondfering why it won't open on my desktop when I send it by Dropbox.

It’s possible DropBox uses versioning or some form of compression on PSD files if they are a large size.

  • Creation of previews/thumbnails of PSD files not working in v3.0.1

I'm using Aperture 3.0.1, PS 4 to edit photographs.
My workflow will be the usual, Photo > Edit with Adobe PS, in my Aperture browser thumbnails/previews will be created for the PS file.
When I save my work in PS, the thumbnails and previews in Aperture are not being updated properly, show horizontal magenta/cyan lines, noise, clearly some of the layers are not being processed, some layers are not being resized to the right preview format, it's a complete mess.
I tried to delete/update previews, no difference.
It's an absolute shame, this worked perfectly in Aperture 2.1 and is absolutely necessary in my workflow. I'm seriously thinking to go back to 2.1.
Anyone with suggestions to get this working? Thanks

Having some similar problems and unfortunately some different ones as well...
I would love to know any tips you might have in identifying the "faulty" PSD files that Aperture 3 cannot deal with or more like the the PSD files that FAULTY Aperture cannot deal with (they worked fine in 2.1.4, Preview, iPhoto, etc).
I ask because the problem I have is that as soon as I hit one file that never finishes generating a thumbnail for, then I am done since everything else just queues up behind it and I can't diagnose anything else. As I said in an earlier post, HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO INCLUDE USEFUL DIAGNOSTIC INFO IN THE "ACTIVITY WINDOW", so that we could tell which images are being "processed" (or more importantly not being processed).

  • When is a .psd file NOT a .psd file?

As a result of leaning how to make a mask, I discovered that I could also paste directly from the net into an AI page.  It's the "saving" that costs the question.
My reviewer, who checks out my design ads and brochures does not like .psd's to be "Placed" in my Ai files althought the printer couldn't care less. So, I tried to outfox that by copy'paste from the .psd file into AI, and then saving that as AI.  Fine. It's an AI file, but in the LINKS, it's still called a .psd even though it was not "placed".
If I printscreened something, like a portrait of Handel into PS, and then moved it to AI and changed it from black to green tones as a .ai file, Links now calls it "unknown source."  I give up. I've done some complete changes, like making a ps image a different color by outline and fills in Ai, and only then will it be an .ai file---ha, sometimes!  I've tried that with other images made in PS to AI and it was still called a .psd.
Now, I thought CS4 was supposed to be more user friendly to raster images.....so why isn't it?
You know, it's difficult tryping to please 2 different people...........................m
p.s. Why is it so difficult to get a curser into a paragraph and be easily moved with a mouse?  Just curious....

       Pardon the long absence----been sick.....
Your're right Scott. Perhaps I'm trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I really thought the extension was the important change, but I   see it's just a "wrapper" as you suggest.
I didn't know about, or had long forgotten,  the right/click/ embedded aspect---I don't think I ever did that. I would just send the Links info burned into the disc the printer would get.  If I did this, would my dear reviewer be able to see the images instead of little empty boxes she complains about?  I'd gladly try that to please her.
Then, for the printer, (please pardon the ignorance) the file burned would already contain the embedded files or should I still burn them as a separate part of the file? Appreciate the help.

  • Psd files not updating edited smart objects (PS CC as of 6/3/14)

I created a master PSD file and added four different TIF files as 'linked' (not embedded) Smart Objects.  If I edit these linked files (they open when double-clicked, or 'Edit Contents') make changes and then save & close the edited master TIF files, the main PSD file does not reflect the edited changes. If I double click the Smart Object, it opens and shows my edits, but to save & close still does not update the master PSD file.   I do this all the time without issue, so I am perplexed.  Even if I right-click the smart object and select "Update All Modified Content" nothing changes.  Closing the file, restarting Photoshop- nothing updates the main PSD file with the changes to the edited TIF files... EXCEPT if I 'replace contents' with the same file: then it updates the PSD.
    Any ideas?

I was actually just working in Illlustrator. Selecting the vector object and then select PS and Paste. I'm then asked if I want this to be a smart object. I select yes and it adds the object as a smart object layer. If I double click the layer it opens it in Illustrator, I make a change, save it and close it. Then back to PS and the smart object doesn't update.
I haven't used Place Embedded or Place Linked. I don't understand what those functions do. It's just not how I'm use to working.
Actually I have a large PSD doc. Inside it is a group of objects that I have turned into a Smart object. Inside that (by double clicking) is an AI file that is also a smart object. When I open that up to make a change it won't update once I save and close.
I have tried a coulpe of test with placed Linked and Embedded objects and I can't get those to work either. So what ever the change was. So far not really liking it.

  • Bulk save as psd file not saved with Maximize Compatibility selected in preference

I want to do a "bulk save as" for psd files that were not saved with Maximize File Compatibility selected in Preferences. I'm trying to import those files into LR5 but I get an error message. Or is there a work around for resolving this issue? I have both PS CS6 and PS CC. Also Bridge for both. I've just subscribed to LR5.

LR does not support Layers, PSD files may have layers so you may have a problem using LR to do what you want to do.
Set your Photoshop Preferences to always save with Max Compatibility.
Record a save action one step menu File>save.
Then use Adobe Bridge menu Edit>Find to find all your PSD files.
Then select all and use menu Tools>Photoshop>Batch  and if your lucky and don't catch an Adobe Bug Photoshop will start and the Batch dialog will open,  You can the set the Save Action Set and the Save Action  all the PSD selected in the Bridge should open and saved.
I cancelled the search short here the search for all psd files could take a very long time and did not run the batch.
You will have a better chance not catching an Adobe bug if Photoshop is not up and running when you use the here.  Bridge may try to start a different version of Photoshop then the one running when you use menu tools>Photoshop>Batch.  Bridge CC was updated to start CC 2014 there is no bridge CC 2014.
This site scale image poorly you can scale them if you view them in a new tab or window.

  • Linked PSD files not found when opening .ai files via shared folder

My main user folder on the iMac is set to be shared (read/write, including all enclosed files) with my MacBook Pro so that I can get someone to help me on a big job. The job is a series of one-page InDesign files (they are newspaper advertisements). The IDD files contain a series of Illustrator files with linked PSD files.
The idea is that we can both work on the .idd and .ai files in the same folder at the same time.
It's all working fine EXCEPT that whenever an .ai file is opened on the MacBook, Illustrator doesn't know where the linked PSD files are. We can update the link, but when the .ai file is then opened on the iMac and saved, the same thing happens the next time it is opened on the Macbook.
I don't want to embed the PSD files into the .ai files as sometimes I have to modify them and they can be linked to up to 20 .ai files. Any ideas?
G5 iMac OSX 10.7.5 / Macbook Pro OSX 10.8.2 / networked via FireWire cable / file sharing on, laptop user has Administrator status, all files are read/write, permissions include all enclosed files / CS6

If you are rebooting the computer holding down T to share via firewire, that is your problem. that mounts the other computer as a hardrive and probably messes up the filepath.
Turn on sharing via Ethernet or wireless
    Connecting two computers using Ethernet
You can use an Ethernet cable to connect two Mac computers and share files or play network games.
To connect two computers using Ethernet:
Connect a standard Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port on one computer to the Ethernet port on the other. You don’t need to use an Ethernet crossover cable.
If your computer doesn’t have an Ethernet port, try using a USB-to-Ethernet adapter.
On each computer, choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Sharing. Note the computer name for each computer.
In the Finder on one of the computers, choose Go > “Connect to Server,” and then click Browse.
Double-click the other computer in the window and enter your password, if necessary.
If you manually configured the TCP/IP settings for the Ethernet service on the computer you are connecting to, you may need to enter that computer’s TCP/IP address in the “Connect to Server” dialog.
To see or set the TCP/IP address, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Network, and select Ethernet in the list.

I have a .psd that doesn't want to work with Motion 5.  Every time I try and import it, Motion says that it's not a valid codec.  I can't figurt out what's going on, all my other .psd files seem to work.

  • Opening PSD File - Not Enough Memory

I created a sequence of images from Particle Illusion in a PSD format. When I open one of the images in Photoshop (CS3), it opens - no problem. When I try to open it in Illustrator CS3, I get the message "Not enough memory to place the file".

On Windows XP 64, opening PSD files with Illustrator CS3 does not seem to work.
What you can do to resolve this issue is to save the file as PNG in Photoshop. That can be opened in Illustrator and transprency is preserved.

  • CS6 to CC; PSD file not updating

Ran into a problem after upgrading from CS6 to CC.
I'm making an animatic for a stop-motion film.
A lot of the media I'm editing in Premiere is in the form of .psd files created in Ps and edited within a video timeline; they are recognized by Pr as video clips.
Before upgrading to CC if I changed the .psd file in Ps and saved it it would automatically update in Pr. No render from Ps necessary.
Now it doesn't, and says media pending, "link Media" is grayed out, and I can't replace the footage.
I like working between the two programs with .psd files but for now I will render out video clips to work with.
If anyone knows how to get back to my original workflow please let me know.
    Thanks,
    ~Scott

I found a quick solution in case someone stumbles upon this post with similar problems. I just deleted the old psd and re-imported the new one. Would have been nice to just re-link the psds so if anyone knows how to do that please post. Thanks.

  • PSD Files Not Updating

I am still having trouble with Lightroom recognizing PSD and some other updated files. All filters are off. I did the work in Bridge because of similar issues I've had with LR updating files. Now I just want the PSD files to show up so that I can use one of Lightroom's web galleries to show a client. But only one PSD file shows up, and it's a reject that is in another folder.
I've tried quiting and relaunching several times. I've also tried moving the PSD files to new folders. Is there anything I can do to make this work right?

Among other things PSDs have to be saved in PSCI with 'Maximum Compatability' set.
