1841 ISR Backup/Load Balancing
Hi All,
I'm about to purchase an 1841 ISR with a HWIC-4ESW (4port switch). On each of the two built in F/E ports i'm going to put a DSL link with static IPs from different ISPs. Can I set up F/E 1 to perform backup/load balancing for F/E 0? Will basic EIGPR routing work in this senario?
Thanks in advance,
Don
Hi
HWIC-4ESW acts as normal switch ports which is available in the switches.
you wont be able to assign ips to the F/E ports instead you can create SVIs and have them assigned with the ips.
Also when it comes to loadbalancing you can have 2 equal cost routes which takes care of that but if you want to have redundancy then better consider to make use of tracking feature since the F/E port will remain up though you have some probs with the line.
In this case with 2 equal cost routes the traffic thru the faulty link will be blackholed(dropped).

Load balancing in RAC 11.2
Hello,
what is the best practise for rman backups load balancing for 11.2 RAC.
Should we use scan listener or should we use old method of allocating each channel to each node ?If you are using FRA (db_recovery_file_dest - obviously a SHARED FRA diskgroup/filesystem etc.. ) you set parallelism and let it handle it. It will automagically do some load balancing. You no longer need to allocate/deallocate channels in this configuration.
RMAN> CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK;
# default backup device is disk
RMAN> CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 6;
One thing to consider. Your archivelog backup destination needs to be accessible CLUSTER WIDE ie on ALL nodes.
I would like to see Oracle support ACFS for this sort of shared location - currently it is not supported. I have tested it and it works, but there is still a single-point-of-failure. ASM itself. -
1841 Load Balancing and Failover
I have an 1841 router with a HWIC-4ESW (4port switch) card installed. The 4ESW is setup as VLAN1 and serves the internal network as the default gateway. The FE0/0 and FE0/1 interfaces are each connected to a ADSL Router. I currently have one WAN interface working fine passing trafic etc I want to add the second interface to act as a backup and aslo do load balancing if possible. Any ideas on how I go about setting up the 1841 to do this. I have attached my current config file that does not have the second WAN interface configured (FE0/1)
ThanksWhile you can get the HWIC-1GE-SFP for the 1841 you need to consider how much traffic you intend to pass over it. It's rated for 87Mbps so if it is less than that, you should be fine and the 1841 is the box for you. Note that the ethernet switching modules for the 1841 will let you do layer 3 termination.
To get load-balancing over 2 links, simply configure two static default routes (with the same AD) and enable CEF which will give you per-destination load-sharing -
Load-balance / autofailover using 2 ISPs
Good morning.
we have a T1 installed at our site and recently purchased a broadband connection from a different ISP. Our plan is to utilize both ISPs to Load-balance our Internet and setup auto-failover in case either one fails. We run exchange 2007 and host an ASP application so we can't afford to have our Internet disrupted.
currently we have a 1841 cisco router for the T1 and we're trying to figure-out if we need to purchase an ASA Firewall to setup the auto fail-over / load balance system.
Can you tell me which is the best way to do this and what equipment / model of cisco routers/ Firewalls do you recommend to implement this?
Thanks,
CollinHi Collin -- We appreciate your post but, as this pertains to ISR 1841, think you'd be better served in the Cisco NetPro Forums.

Scenario breakdown :
I have two app servers on hand version 6 (App1) and (App2) and a singular web server - IWS 4.1(Web1).
Solution thus far :
I have chosen to use App2 as the Sync Primary and App1 as the Backup. Created a new cluster "mohrelxcluster" in kregedit and created two entries at location Clusters\mohrelxcluster\SyncServers to include both servers at port 10818(kxs). I have futher setup round robin polling under CCS0\LoadDb. I set the following values under CCS0\LoadDb\ServerWeights:
- ipaddressApp1:10818=50
- ipaddressApp2:10818=50
Finally, created the needed entry under CCS0\ClusterName:
-mohrelxcluster=0
Upon doing so, I started both servers according to order of precedence App2 first then App1.
Log Findings :
As anticipated, according to the kxs log files on both machines shows the broadcasting and processing of information between Sync Primary and Backup. (indicated by the sending to and receiving from <ipaddressinhex:10818>).
In the iasdsync log file on App2(Sync Primary) - App2 has be recognized as Primary and App1 as backup.
Problem :
Upon starting up the ksvradmin interface, the following error is trigged : An error occured while reading in load balancing values server app1. Upon clicking on app1's icon and clicking on the cluster tab, the "mohrelxcluster" cannot be seen.
Many thanks for reviewing. Here's hoping some one can help
Regards
SathyaHI
Are you sharing single LDAP for these two application servers. If not, you have to create those cluster entries in two regitries (Kregedit). (both syncserver entries and clustername=0 entries)
If you are sharing single LDAP, the entries under SyncServers can be created once but you need to create ,
<clustername>=0 entry under CCSO\ClusterName in two registries.
Hope this helps.

ACE load balancing servers on different subnets...
Hello,
I have the following issue.... need to load balance traffic between two servers already working in two different subnets (vlans), at this point is highly desirable to avoid changing IP addresses. Is it possible to accomplish this goal using ACE? routed or bridged mode? is it strictly necessary to have all servers belonging to a serverfarm in the same subnet?
Thanks in advanced for your support.Hi,
You can do this, but you have to use client-NAT (Source-NAT) to force the return traffic to pass back through the ACE. You also then need static routes in the ACE context to point at each server. PBR is an alternative approach but I have not implemented that in a live network. The important thing is that the ACE sees both sides of the conversation.
The following extract from a configuration shows the basic principle:

Cisco 886VA - Multiple PPPoE Line Load Balancing
Dear Cisco Community,
due to the need of increased bandwidth a customer ordered three ADSL6000/576Kbit lines from the same ISP. Dial-in is done with PPPoE and the IP is not static.
- Is it possible to load balance between the three ISP lines with this router as the Cisco 886VA-K9 (Advanced IP Services) doesnt support PFR/OER I want to load balance per session, meaning each TCP session takes the same path, the next TCP session takes second path, next TCP session takes third path, then first path again and so on.
- I did read the tutorials avaiable, but they don't discuss how the lines are used in round-robin fashion, just how to distribute different traffic on different lines. (https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/32186/dual-internet-links-nating-pbr-and-ip-sla?page=1) or (http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/ip/network-address-translation-nat/100658-ios-nat-load-balancing-2isp.html)
- How would you solve this challenge?

Thank you for helping.Hey there,
I managed to fulfill my requirement..
If its a cluster on same machine or across machines, this should work
1. Login to machine, cd $DOMAIN_HOME
2. mkdir -p Apex_lsn_config/AdminServer Apex_lsn_config/<MS1> Apex_lsn_config/<MS2> # MS1 and MS2 are the Managed Server names as appropriate
#If you are planning for cluster spawning MS's across machines, make sure you create the dir's on step 2 for each machine respectively. (in my case $DOMAIN_HOME is not shared)
3. Copy apex-config.xml from the /tmp/apex or whatever location you have it currently to Apex_lsn_config/<MS1> Apex_lsn_config/<MS2>
4. cd $DOMAIN_HOME/bin; cp -p SetDomainEnv.sh SetDomainEnv.sh.orig #Backup the file
5. Append -Djava.io.tmpdir in SetDomainEnv.sh as below for JAVA_OPTIONS # Do it on both machine if you are not sharing DOMAIN_HOME and planning cluster across machines
-Djava.io.tmpdir=$DOMAIN_HOME/APEX_CONFIG/${SERVER_NAME}
Hint: Search for "iterativeDev" and append the same line with -Djava.jo.tmpdir
6. Modify "java.io.tmpdir" from the web.xml file of apex.war as below and re-deploy the war
<context-param>
<param-name>config.dir</param-name>
<param-value>${java.io.tmpdir}</param-value>
</context-param>
7. Bounce Weblogic Admin and Manged Servers. Make sure to tail the Managed Server log to see apex-config.xml is picked from the new location.
8. Brew a Coffee for yourself :)
- You find the instructions on creating a cluster from weblogic documentation, the steps mentioned above are only to overcome the bdb locking issue whilst creating a cluster.
Did it help?

Load balancing on older hardware for small business
Hey Spiceheads!Im sure I am way over my head here but I like to swim so its all good. I am fairly new to IT and am enjoying the ride, so this one should be fun too.In my office we have 8 servers, 10 USB hard drives for.... stuff. I didnt set it up. So we have virtually no redundancy.We have one good server and 7 pretty old ones, so I had a thought to put in a SAN or NAS and Load balance all of the old servers together. Then we would have plenty of storage/ backups (Raid 6 probably or whatever the SAN does) and we could keep the old servers and use them as they would be needed.My system requirements are as follows:2 Windows VMs
1-2 SQL servers
2-Linux Servers one of which is high performance
Backups.I know its a small list but if there is an economical way to do this I think we would have a very robust system, we do web development and are...
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks CommunityI'm not sure if this help you, but it's not that easy to join two networks together. If you take the reason why, it's because of different IP addresses. If you are downloading something from the Internet you would have to divide the data into two different IP addresses = two different computers. Thing you can do is auto-balance use of wlan0 and wlan1 according to the usage. So, script will forward for first user packets on wlan0 and if somebody else connects he will get forwarded to wlan1. If there are more people you need to divide network bandwidth in different way, but I don't see way how to get 20Mbps with a single computer on a single TCP connection working as normal. It's possible to ask server for portion of data with wlan0 and then for the second portion on wlan1, but it may be complicated for data downloads with server sessions attached to the IP.

2 ISP load balancing and redundancy
Hello!!
Our small company has about 40 branches spreaded within city. Branches are connected by optic wire supplied by our ISP. So in ISP our branches are located in one VLAN. From every branch we created VPN tunnel to our server room in central office. Central office is like a cetner point. If optic wire fails to central office, there would no VPN tunnels and no network to all branches. Moreover, all the traffice goes through central office.
Now we decided to pave one more optic line to our central office. And that will increase bandwidth and redundancy.
Private network topology: There are no default gateways and ip-addresses. For examle, at first branch I will plug computer directly into media converter and at the second branch plug another computer to the media converter. After that this two computers became in one network. And can assign any ip addresses to them.
What I have: our firewall do enough work, don't want to overload it. But we have some free ports in our new cisco 3750. The question is how to do load balancing and redundanccy? Can it do load balancing according to traffic? And how load balance incoming traffic? For example, connection was established from branche's router, how this router will choose through which line make connection? By the way, at all branches we use noisy cisco
3700 series routers.Sorry for upping 1 year old threat.
We talked to our Network Provider. They said "these two cables are coming from two different places, so there is no way to use etherchannel. You must use active-standby solution."
Relying on STP we just put two cables into 3750 stack. But with default STP settings, connection was very unstable, many packet losses and disconnections. So we found easy solution with "flex links", making one interface backup of the other. And only now I recognized that this is not a failover solution. Because, if network beyond media converter will down, link from media converter to switch would still up.
What could I do to make our L2 WAN redundant? Are there any additional STP settings. -
HOWTO: load balance based on source subnet
Hi Guys,
We are currently working out if there is a way to load balance specific subnets to a specific rserver within a server farm behind the one VIP.
For example (all Rservers within one serverfarm Serv_farm001):
Subnet 10.10.10.0/24 load balance to Rserver A ( with Rserver B as backup )
Subnet 20.20.20.0/24 load balance to Rserver B ( with Rserver A as backup )
I can see from the configuration guide that you could maybe use sticky src IP to do this, but I haven't seen anything to confirm this.
Any takers on this, I'm sure it would be a familar common thing that others are doing out there?
Looking fwd to the responses!
Cheers
RHi Rob,
You can either do this on the incoming-interface ACL or for easier management you can do the following:
class-map type http loadbalance match-any Subnet-A
2 match source-address 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0
class-map type http loadbalance match-any Subnet-B
2 match source-address 20.20.20.0 255.255.255.0
policy-map type loadbalance first-match SLB
class Subnet-A
serverfarm A
class Subnet-B
Serverfarm B

I am new to CSS. I have CSS 1150 with IOS 7.3. I want to load balancing two servers 192.168.210.55 and 192.168.210.56 on port 80.
My CSS is connected in single arm configuration. Core switch is dong the Inter VLAN routing and CSS is connected in the VLAN 200 access Port.
Servers and CSS are connected to same Layer 3 switch.
CSS is in VLAN 200 (192.168.200.10)
Servers are in VLAN 210

Network connectivity is there. Please let me know what I am missing and how to solve this problem.
Thanks in advance.Thanks for the reply, But I have modified my configuration. Now I am load balancing VLAN 200 Servers where the CSS also located in the same VLAN. Attach is the updated configuration.
I can only ping the VIP but not able to telnet on VIP (192.168.200.65 80).

Load balancing &scalability when OSB service is deployed in a single server
Hi
We have a file write service which we are deploying to clustered domain with a single admin and managed server.
This we are doing since there can be issue of file locking if it is deployed cluster with multiple managed server and when more than one instance has to write to a same file (writing to the same file is the requirement).
What are our options of load balancing and scalability and fail over?
As i understand scalability in this case is limited to increasing the capacity of the hardware. There is no load balancing.
For fail over, we can go for a backup domain is PASSIVE mode.
Can someone please suggest any other options?
Thanks
kedarHi,
One SSA is ok, but you should think about access rights. If the access is clear cut between all the web apps you should be ok with one SSA. Multiple result sources limiting on content source also works, but could easily be bypassed.
Multiple SSA's will eat up RAM/CPU like a mother :)
As for popular etc.. it could be due to how those sources are set up, but haven't investigated or tested this much.
Thanks,
Mikael

Load balancing with an ASA5510
We have an ASA5510 with two ADSL lines connected and the auto fail-over set up - this is all tested and if the main line fails, the backup line is used in it's place - no problem there.
However, I'd like to increase our connection speed, and one way I've done this in the past is to add a couple of extra ADSL lines to a router that is capable of load balancing.
I'm aware that the ASA5510 does not load balance (seems a waste as we've got the backup line just sitting there doing nothing!), but would it be feasible to add another router in front of the ASA device to perform this load balancing function?
If Yes - any suggestions as to what device I might use?
If No - what would be the issues that would prevent me from doing this?Thanks for the prompt response Simon
Had a look at the RV016 which seems like it would fit the bill and give us plenty of scope for expansion. I've not set up load balancing on a Cisco before - does it just work (ie auto-detect the connections), or do I need to be aware of licencing etc (as seems to be the case with a lot of cisco features)
With regard to port forwarding, the ASA is already configured and working OK, so I was intending to just push all traffic through to it - my thinkimg being that it's easier to have the config in one place. Is this likely to cause any issues? -
Cluster Apex MS's across multiple nodes for load balancing?
Can Cluster Apex MS's across multiple nodes for load balancing? If Yes/No, any supportive doc's will be much appreciated.
Here is what I did ..........
I tried multiple MS's on different nodes for Apex Domain (clustered)
Deployed apex.war, i.war with targets pointing to cluster.
Apex listener techstack is shared filesystem $HOME/apex, where apex-config.xml and bdb are available
Anyone of the MS's whichever started up first is locking up bdb and 500 server shows up when internal workspace is being launched with host specific url, where as it works fine for the host which actually locked up bdb (first MS that was started)
2nd MS shows errors as below in log files ..
Caused By: com.sleepycat.je.EnvironmentLockedException: (JE 4.0.103)$HOME/apex/bdb The environment cannot be locked for single writer access. ENV_LOCKED: The je.lck file could not be locked. Environment is invalid and must be closed.
Its expected behavior until here .....
++++ I tried something to get it working ++++
Whilst both MS's are up and running, delete $HOME/apex/bdb but let apex-config,xml be as it is...now the internal workspace urls for both hosts work fine. I logged into host specific urls and navigated, created/edited users.,etc and it is all looking good but it did not create new bdb directory under $HOME/apex ...!!
Having said its working fine, the same issue repeats after the MS's bounce. So I did put a command line to delete bdb dir once the MS comes up to avoid the issue but really not sure if this is the right way at all?
Geek's ...awaiting your advice!!Hey there,
I managed to fulfill my requirement..
-Djava.io.tmpdir=$DOMAIN_HOME/APEX_CONFIG/${SERVER_NAME}
Hint: Search for "iterativeDev" and append the same line with -Djava.jo.tmpdir
6. Modify "java.io.tmpdir" from the web.xml file of apex.war as below and re-deploy the war
<context-param>
<param-name>config.dir</param-name>
<param-value>${java.io.tmpdir}</param-value>
</context-param>

Hi All, I have two CUCM 6.1.3 ( I Pub & 1 Sub). All phones registers with sub and all phones use pub for tftp. I am trying to force some phones to register with pub but have no success even new CM group created has pub as first choice & sub as second choice. For your information during Failover in the past phones used to register with publisher and currently there are some ATA devices registered with pub for some reason. Any Ideas ???
Hi Mike,
Hope all is well my friend!
Just a note here, did you change the reference to the CCM Group in the Device Pool that phones in question are using? After changing the reference you will reset all the phones to push them over to the Pub
You should keep in mind that in the SRND for CUCM the recommendation is that IP Phones are not registered on the Publisher. The Publisher should be kept for dB processing etc. It is a "best practice" to have at least 3 servers in your cluster (1 Pub and 2 Subs). When you define your Calmanager Groups you might setup Group 1 as;
Sub-1 (Primary)
Pub
And Group 2 as;
Pub (Primary)
Sub-1
In Group 1 the Pimary Callmanager is Sub-1 and in Group 2 the Primary Callmanager is the Pub. This is in reference to the phones registered with each Callmanager Group (with the highest one listed being the Primary or "First choice")
**This is not related to the Publisher (Primary Node) and its functionality in any way The wording can be a tad confusing at times.
This relationship is built via the Callmanager Group and Device Pool that the phones belong to.
You can specify where a phone registers by assigning it to a specific Device Pool this in turn will look at a Callmanager Group that lists a Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Callmanager server.
Here is some related info;
Cisco Unified CallManager groups and device pools represent logical groupings of devices that you can arrange in any way that you want. For ease of administration, make sure that all the devices in a group or pool share a common and easily identified characteristic, such as their physical location on the network.
You can also use Cisco Unified CallManager groups to establish redundancy (backup call processors) for the primary Cisco Unified CallManager in the group. A Cisco Unified CallManager group comprises an ordered list of up to three Cisco Unified CallManager servers. During normal operation, the first (primary) Cisco Unified CallManager in the group controls all device pools and devices that are assigned to that group. If the primary Cisco Unified CallManager in a group fails, control of the device pools and devices that are registered with the primary Cisco Unified CallManager transfers to the next Cisco Unified CallManager in the group list.
Cisco Unified CallManager Groups
A Cisco Unified CallManager group comprises a prioritized list of up to three Cisco Unified CallManagers. The first Cisco Unified CallManager in the list serves as the primary Cisco Unified CallManager for that group, and the other members of the group serve as secondary (backup) Cisco Unified CallManagers.
Cisco Unified CallManager groups associate with devices through device pools. Each device belongs to a device pool, and each device pool specifies the Cisco Unified CallManager group for all of its devices.
Cisco Unified CallManager Groups:
Call processing load balancing You can configure device pools and Cisco Unified CallManager groups to distribute the control of devices across multiple Cisco Unified CallManagers. These should be Subscriber servers
Device Pools
Device pools provide a convenient way to define a set of common characteristics that can be assigned to devices.
Hope this helps!
Rob
