[SOLVED] CUPS doesn't detect USB Samsung ML-2010 printer

Hi. I only speak a little English. Sorry for that.
I have got an USB Samsung ML-2010 printer. Before I used cups-usblp from AUR, and it worked. But it doesn't work now. The cups-usblp maintainer suggests to use cups instead of cups-usblp. Searching with google, it appears that other people don't have problems with this printer, cups, and archlinux. But I do. Cups' web interface doesn't detect it.
Well, this is how are the things now:
$ lsusb | grep Samsung

$ ls -l /dev/bus/usb/002/004

I open http://localhost:631 in my browser, click "add new printer" and I get just "Serial printer #1"
at "local printers". There isn't my printer. I use KDE, and KDE's tool for adding printers doesn's detect it either.
I miss archlinux, but I need to print.
What may be wrong? What may be I am missing?
Thanks a lot for your comments and help.

Solved!
Restarting cupsd didn't work.
But reinstalling cups...
$ sudo pacman -Rdc cups (it is a dependency of kdeadmin-system-config-printer-kde which I had installed)
$ sudo rm -r /etc/cups/*
I realize cupsd is already running:
$ ps aux | grep cupsd
root      1549  0.0  0.1  75548  4080 ?        Ss   21:04   0:00 cupsd -C /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
felipe    1690  0.0  0.0   8416  1028 pts/1    S+   21:13   0:00 grep cups
I kill it
$ sudo -SIGKILL 1549
$ ps aux | grep cupsd
felipe    1694  0.0  0.0   8416  1024 pts/1    S+   21:13   0:00 grep cups
Ok. Reinstall cups
$ sudo pacman -S cups
Start cups daemon:
$ sudo rc.d start cupsd
Open firefox. Go to web interface, bla, bla, bla.... And it's there!
I feel really silly. It was a fresh install, so I didn't think about reinstalling.
Printed some jobs and worked perfectly. I used the gutenprint driver.
Thanks a lot, pyther.  I thought yours wasn't a very useful suggestion, but it really was. I'm so happy. I owe you.

  • 10.6.1 doesn't detect usb printer properly

    I have a Samsung SCX-4300 printer in my office connected to my MacBook running Snow Leopard (clean install, and upgraded to 10.6.1 right after setting up the system). When I tried to add the printer in System Preferences, the printer does not show up at all, even though the printer is on and connected, and clearly shows up under the USB tab in System Profile. I have tried resetting the printing system in System Preferences, fixing disk permissions both from within the system and from the installation DVD (incidentally, the permissions never seem to get fixed - even when the log says that they are fixed, when I run verification immediately after, the permissions are still broken), and zapping pram, but nothing works. Furthermore, I also have an HP F4280 all-in-one back at home, and the same MacBook only detects the printing function, but not the scanning function (no scan tab in printer preferences). Both the Samsung SCX-4300 and HP F4280 have drivers either supplied with Snow Leopard, or downloadable from Software Update.

    piatigorsky,
    I can help with the HP, but not the Samsung since I don't know anything about it. There is a known issue with the Print queue potentially showing the Print and not the Scan tabs for devices with In-OS drivers. The work around seems to be to delete and re-add the print queue, this should cause the right association with the scanner to occur.
    Given the clean install nature of Snow Leopard (as apposed to the default upgrade install) I am surprised by the problems you are having.
    A couple of notes:
    1) A full installer for the HP device is available from [here|http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=al- 74802-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=219&product=3390949]. This will give you an HP Scan application. It may help to track down the Scan problems with the In-OS drivers. It does not however contain the In-OS drivers.
    2) A good document from HP on configuring your printer can be found [here|http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01846935&lc=en&dlc=e n&cc=us&lang=en&os=219&product=3390949].
    3) A great document on setting up the device for using the In-OS Print and Scan drivers from Apple can be found [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3771].
    4) Finally a generic document on Print and Scan drivers from Apple can be found [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669]. And it states that your Samsung drivers should be In-OS as well.
    Note one other thing you may want to try, if you've Reset your printing system, and your computer (restart) is to actually restart the device. This may help get the Samsung recognized.
    Just trying to help.

  • [SOLVED] CUPS Web interface crash when trying to Add Printer

    I've used the web interface @ http://localhost:631
    After a recent upgrade, when clicking Add Printer under the Admin tab, I enter the root username and password, and then the web interface "crashes". In Chromium, I get the "Aw, snap!" blue screen. In FireFox it just hangs forever.
    In /var/log/cups/error_log I see
    E [28/Nov/2009:14:46:19 -0500] Unable to set ACLs on root certificate "/var/run/cups/certs/0" - Operation not supported
    I've tried removing /var/run/cups and it is recreated when cups is restarted, but same error. I haven't tried adding a printer via commandline because it looks difficult.
    I've tried removing cups with pacman, and deleting /etc/cups/ /var/run/cups /usr/share/cups and anything else I could find and reinstalling, but no luck.
    CUPS 1.4.2-1
    perms on /var/run/cups 755 root:lp
    perms on /var/run/cups/certs 511 daemon:sys
    CUPSD running as root
    /etc/cups/cups
    root is a member of sys group
    root is not a member of lp group (does this matter?)
    Anyone have this problem?

    Still having this problem. Even installed x86-64 Arch in a VM to see if a clean install works. NOPE!

  • Samsung ml-2010 printer + Airport Extreme

    I recently purchased an Airport Extreme and networked my samsung ML-2010 laser printer and a external hard drive. I have a usb hub (usb powered) connected to the AE. If i, for some reason, unplug the printer, change the toner, or turn it off then on later, the Airport will not automatically recognize it again. I have to shut off the Airport and turn it back on with the printer ON and connected for it to recognize it again. Is there any update, or fix, that would allow the Airport extreme to recognize the printer as plug and play???
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Nobody can give me some help? I want to make sure that the printer works before buying the Airport Extreme... :P

  • CUPS don't detect USB printer

    I have 2 usb printers. An old hp deskjet and a new samsung ML-1640.The first works fine with hplip dirver. For the second I have installed the official Samsund driver via AUR.  But CUPS don't see it. It is recognized by the kernel. I see /dev/usb/lp0 device created (root.lp rw-rw---) but still nothing in CUPS .
    After searching similar problems on the net I have found a hint that changing permissions on the lp0 device can solve the problem. So chmod +rw lp0 and it WORKS.
    But evidently after turn off, turn on of the printer lp0 will have its default permissions again. I tried to find the cause of the problem by comparing the system behavour with my printers. I found that it's identical. The devices are created with the same permissions.
    I found also that changing the group of the device to nobody or owner to daemon have the same effect as chmod +rw (it works).
    Anybody have an idea why this happen and how to fix it definitively ?

    Most printers of that class **do need** a slight udev tweak for making them work. Is not wrong to set a +rw on /dev/lp0, but if I were you, I would set a 0660@/dev/lp0 only if it matches your printer.
    Maybe something like:
    ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{manofacturer}=="Samsung", MODE="0660", GROUP="lp"
    Might help. Obviosly, you need to tweak that rule to your own needs, and **don't forget** to add yourself to the lp group.

    Hi there,
    I'm configuring Arch on my Dell d600. I installed cups via paman and started it with /etc/rc.d/cups start. There were no errors on the commandline. grep -R [Cc]ups * in /var/log/ showed  only the following in cups/error_log:

    I tried various adresses: localhost, D600, and the ip.
    /etc/hosts:
    127.0.0.1               localhost.localdomain   localhost  D600
    /etc/rc.conf:
    HOSTNAME="D600"
    Even 127.0.0.1:631 doesn't succeed.
    Edit:
    Found it. 'lo' was in the INTERFACES array in rc.conf. I don't use the normal networking daemon, using wicd instead.
    I took it out and rebooted. Now i can access the web-interface.
    EDIT: How do i mark this solved?

  • System Doesn't detect USB headset after suspend/resume

    Sometimes (this seems to happen randomly), after a resume from suspend my USB headset is no longer detected in gnome. It doesn't show up in the sound settings output tab, and unplugging/replugging the headset does nothing. It does seem to show right up if I run pulseaudio -k to restart pulseaudio. It doesn't seem to matter if I suspended with the headset plugged in or not.
    Has anyone else run into this issue, any workarounds or fixes?

    Let me quote archwiki here:
    Standby / Suspend to RAM
    In the ideal case, running sudo pm-suspend should initiate suspend to memory, meaning that all running state will be preserved in RAM and all components other than RAM will be shut down to conserve power. Pressing the power button should initiate a resume from this state.
    In some cases, it is possible that running pm-suspend causes hangs or other issues. This may be due to specific "misbehaving" modules. If you know which modules could cause such issues, adding a SUSPEND_MODULES config to /etc/pm/config.d/modules of the form
    SUSPEND_MODULES="uhci_hd button ehci_hd"
    should cause these modules to be specifically unloaded before suspend and reloaded after resume.
    To configure invoking pm-suspend automatically on power events like laptop lid close, please refer to Acpid.
    and exactly those 2 modules you should add in the same way.. because those are responsible for usb... helped for me...

  • [SOLVED]fdisk doesn't detect hard drives

    As I'm progressing with installation of Arch, new problems come
    When trying to partition brand new drive during the installation process, I've ran into problem that the drive isn't detected at all. I have 3 physical drives on this machine, including brand new SSD I want to work with (install Arch on), HDD with Windows and external USB stick which I booted from. However, while running either fdisk -l or lsblk only USB stick was to show up as physical drive. (There were other devices of type "loop" showing up when running lsblk, I don't think that they have smth to do with my issue) Important may be that both internal drives are connected to SATA3 ports, though BIOS can see them (and even boot Windows from) perfectly well.
    Googling didn't really help, people were experiencing same problem with external USB hard drives, and the only solution related to Linux was to modify kernel to extend USB storage delay, but there are no parameters like that to work with SATA.
    SOLUTION: so the problem seems to be with SATA3, one needs to switch drive loading option from IDE to AHCI in BIOS, though nothing like that is on wiki.
    keep creating unnecessary topics :uneasy:

  • [solved] Pulseaudio doesn't detect sound card after system update

    Before a recent system update I had pulseaudio working flawlessly, but after doing a recent system update with pacman -Syu,
    pulseaudio no longer sees my sound card and only displays the Dummy audio device.  Among the packages updated that I can
    remember off the top of my head are the Linux keneral, udev, kmod, instead of trying to roll back my system I figured I would try
    to fix the issue.  The only thing suggested in the Pulseaudio wiki is that a asound.conf directory is overriding the /etc/asound.conf
    file which is not the case on my system.
    Looking at the output from lsmod I can see where the kernel modules for the sound card is getting loaded
    snd_hda_intel 23375 0
    snd_hda_codec 89160 3 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_codec_hdmi

    snd_page_alloc 7153 2 snd_pcm,snd_hda_intel
    snd_timer 19544 1 snd_pcm
    and looking at the output from the ps command I can see that pulseaudio is getting started
    1190 ? S<l 0:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start
    1195 ? S 0:00 \_ /usr/lib/pulse/gconf-helper

    Digging into this further aplay -L gives different output based off of whether or not I ran is as my normal user or with sudo/as root.

  • [SOLVED]Firefox doesn't detect Flash plugin on a fresh installation

    I have tried the package in extra and the package from AUR, but firefox still doesn't register the flash plugin. I'm probably just missing something here..

    Is there something extra I have to do other than installing the package? I looked at the old wiki page for using nspluginwrapper but I couldn't see anything that looked relevant..

    Here, I dug up an old file I have kicking around.
    Put it in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
    Name it anything you want instead of "alsa.conf" as long as the file name ends in ".conf"
    options snd_hda_intel enable=1,0 vid=8086,10de pid=3b56,0bea
    options snd_hda_intel index=0 vid=8086 pid=3b56
    The VID and PID numbers are from my hardware.  You will have to replace them from your hardware.  Do:
    lspci -nn | grep -i audio
    And you will see both your on-board and nVidia audio devices.  Look for [xxxx:xxxx] in the listing.  The first xxxx is your VID - vendor, and the second xxxx is your PID - product/part.
    In the "enable=1,0" line put the two VID's first with you on-board being the first VID and then put your two PID's with your on-board being the first PID.  Then in the "index=0" line put your on-board VID and PID.
    This will disable the nVidia audio and just enable your on-board audio.  It will explicitly set your on-board audio to be the first audio device on your system.  This will fix a race condition.
    Remember, you must put in the appropriate VID and PID's for your specific hardware.
    PulseAudio builds on top of ALSA so you are configuring your ALSA devices at a lower level before Pulse starts and when Pulse starts it adds its layer on top of that.
    Another assumption is that both audio devices are using snd_hda_intel which is a pretty safe assumption.  Use "lsmod" to confirm this.

  • [SOLVED] CUPS won't talk to Epson Stylus CX3200 printer

    Hi, (first post woo!)
    I've tried to install CUPS as per the Arch Linux wiki for use with an Epson Stylus CX3200 (scanner and printer, but of course only the printer matters to me at the moment). I've set up udev rules to chown/chmod the printer USB device correctly, blacklisted the usblp module, and installed gutenprint and foomatic packages, and yet the printer does not show up on CUPS's detected printer list.

    Tried a different printer, an Epson Stylus Photo R300. This too is not detected.
    EDIT: Finally solved. Oddly enough, the thing that was causing neither printer to be detected was usblp being blacklisted - modprobing it back in caused both printers to work! I'll be noting this on the Wiki page, as the Wiki's guideline for blacklisting usblp actually caused the problem here =P

  • Laptop doesn't detect driver for Pixma iP100 printer.

    Have Pixma iP 100 installed on Toshiba A665 laptop. Was working fine. Then upgraded to Windows-8 after which computer failed to recognize printer. Have down loaded Wx 8 driver from Canon website to no avail. Have uninstalled and re-installed still to no avail. System can't find driver. Any help? Thanks, DC.

    Hi dcjensen,
    I would like to see just how much of the printer is or is not being detected by Windows by seeing how it shows up in Device Manager, or even if it shows up at all.  Use the following steps to get into Device Manager:
    1.  Put your mouse in the top right corner to open the Charms Menu, then click Settings.
    2.  Click Control Panel.
    3.  Click System and Security.
    4.  Click System.
    5.  Click Device Manager on the left.
    In the Device Manager, are there any entries that have a question mark or exclamation point?  Also, is there an entry under Other Devices that eitehr lists the name of the printer or just says Unknown Device?  Lastly, under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, do you have one or more entry that says USB Printing Support?
    Did this answer your question? Please click the Accept as Solution button so that others may find the answer as well.
