2 dead quicksilvers in 2 weeks

Doh!
This is a new one for me. I had a G4 Quicksilver choke a couple weeks ago. On startup I would get the spinning progress indicator, but where the normal splash screen should appear came a black square - end of story. It didn't want to play anymore.
So - interim solution was to swap out the machine for another Quicksilver and run net install. Worked fine for 10 days or so, and now the machine, at the same desk, is exhibiting the exact same problem!
This cannot be of coincidence, can it? What could be cooking these machines? Has anyway else encountered the black box of doom?
Any ideas would be most welcome!

Hello! Please provide more detailed info about the machine model and OS you are using. It's highly unlikely that two machines would fail unless there's too high a voltage coming in and it's frying the power supplies. The network OS could also be corrupt. Tom

hi, my name is hem(personal info removed) from ahmedabad.
i m feeling like a fool after buying a blackberry curve 9220 white handheld from snapdeal. i received the phone in the last week of april'13 and on 31st may'13 my phone got dead. i submitted to the service centre in ahmedabad @ mithakali on 3rd june'13(WORK ORDER NO. - (personal info removed)223). i have been told that it needs to be sent to bangalore and will be back in aroung 15-20 days. still i have not received my phone. no one from blackberry is responding to me. from service centre ms. shweta told me that it will take one week - the same reply since last two weeks. mr. chintan has cooperated well on the no.((prsonal info removed)70). mr. chintan said that this service centre does not belongs to him so he has given me one more contact no. of mr. pravin - (personal info removed).
i m trying to get connect to this no. since last two days. this no. is either busy or not getting replied. i tried this no. in last two days for more than 50 times atleast. today mr. chintan has given me one more no. of mr. prashant ((personal info removed)13). he asked me for the WO no. and told me that some one will get back to me. i got a call from mithakali service centre and same reply - one more week. now mr. prashant is also not replying my phone. i m really not understanding a phone like blackberry which i hardly used for 4 weeks is lying with service centre since almost last four weeks. now in no way this phone is acceptable to me. now this long message is my last hope. i hope to recieve at least a reply as this is the longest message i have ever drafted in my life and that too for a bloody phone like blackberry. black service and black associates.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
As a user-to-user community, no one here can answer your question with any level of authority whatsoever. BlackBerry provides zero front line support to end users, including warranty...all support starts with the carriers, authorized resellers, and authorized service centers, all who can escalate cases into BlackBerry at no charge to the end user.
So, your escalation path is not here, in these forums. Rather, it is through your service center and/or place of purchase...even if they may have so far been unhelpful. You have no free path by which to bypass them, and should be escalating to their management levels.
There is something called incident support, but it costs to just ask the initial question, since you are bypassing the contract you signed upon purchase. If you wish to investigate that, you can review it here:

  • WRT54G Dead in under a week, one of 4 routers within a year.

Right, i'm getting tired of this. Over the past year, this is the... fourth or so Router to be placed in this same position. They keep dying for no real reason. The worst part is, as soon as they are disconnected for any space of time, they return to a functioning state. For about a week or a few days. Then they return to the broken status. The Setup; 4 Dekstops, 3 laptops intermittently accessing the network. All have Wireless B or G cards. All function in the sense that when something goes bad, it goes bad for everyone, not just one machine. My machine has to access through a pair of floors, which is why there is a Wireless Access Point in between. Nothing fancy is being run by either; Wireless MAC filtering is setup as a matter of convenience (It's easier to take down MAC addresses than to sit down in front of a computer for a few minutes to figure out how to insert the WEP key behind a chinese version of windows), and DMZ is routing to my machine. The Modem connects directly to the router. There is a 1990s era clock about a foot over the router (Digital clock, radio, small), and a computer about 1 meter away through a small wall. There is a light above of the Wireless access point (No fluorescent). There is a monitor and a bunch of cables between the Wireless access point and my machine, but that's irrelevant, because the problem seems to be the router, not just my machine. The Problem; This WRT54G is brand new. And is replacing a D-link which died within 3 days. Which was replacing a WRT54G which held up for about 6 months, before it started requiring factory default resets every 8 hours just so that it could function at a very slow speed (My cable connection would run like a 56k, and wouldn't properly forward ports). This new WRT54G requires resets every 4-12 hours, which just started TODAY, otherwise it plain doesn't function. No connection to the internet. Physically reseting the router resolves the issue. It's under a week old, and I don't feel like replacing it quite yet. Firmware updates have yet to be issued on it. What I think; The house is somewhat old, being made in the 1970s/80s. It's got a fuse box opposed to a circuit breaker. My only and best guess as to why things keep breaking is that the power line might be sagging a bit, but all systems seem to be just fine, so it's a shot in the dark I could also be jinxed. Any thoughts/input/witty observations/lol butts?

  • 2 ibook g4s with dead backlights in 3 weeks

I have two non-warrantee covered ibook G4s which lost their backlights within just a few weeks. Video out to another monitor works fine on both. The apple certified repair shop found a burn mark on the motherboard, and the repair bill for each would be close to $400. I talked to a very nice supervisor at Apple, who denied that there was evidence of manufacturing defect and refused to offer extended coverage. Are others having similar problems? Any suggestions? Thank you.

    Hi Jeff,
I am sorry for your troubles with your iBooks. That seems to be very unlikely that you have had such bad problems with your computer. Some things to think about for the future:
#1 I don't know if you did this, but buy AppleCare. It is worth it in the long run even if you don't have a problem. It is better safe then sorry.
#2 Becareful about how you handle your iBook/computer. I am sure you didn't do any damage to your computer, but just think about what could potentially happen. I don't have food or drinks ever near my computer, just incase. Buy as surge protector. It is only a couple of bucks at any electronics store and it is worth it.
#3 Clean your computer. If you notice a build up of "guck" around your computer get one of the little computer vacumes or CO2 canistor and clear it out. You want to make sure that everything is running right.
#4 Make sure that the computer's fan is not blocked by anything. The G4 runs hot so you don't want to block the fan from cooling it off. I use the iCurve in my dorm room because it lets cool air around the computer.
#5 Use your sences. Listen for any unusal sounds, like the fan comming on frequently. Notice if anything unusal is going on with your computer. Sometimes when the computer is beging to malfunction you can start to see changes in the way it opperates. If your computer feels extremely hot and is making noises, shut it off let it sit.
#6 When in doubt bring it to the nearest Apple Store, call Apple Support, or ask questions in the support forums. You can research by looking through past threads to see if your problem/question has been answered before. Things like over heating shouldn't happen to the computer, it was designed not too. But it happens.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon
PS It never hurts to write a letter to Apple. I had a problem with Honda and they didn't do anything until I wrote them a letter to the headquarters. We came to an agreement, both of us gave a little.

  • Shuffle dead - only a few weeks old

I had the earlier one I think 512 Meg and the volume kept sticking on loud. Went to buy headphones and realized a new ipod wasn't much more so went and got the 2Gig.
Been lovin it. Today I charged it up, left for the gym and noticed it wouldn't play. No light - nothing. Came home, plugged it in cradle, it lit up, showed up yellow stayed on for awhile then went off.
I can't get iTunes to find it to save my life. I tried another iPod to see if it was iTunes and that one is fine.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

I'm guessing you're right. I know someone at the Apple Store (he was on vacation for quite awhile) and he just replaced it even though it was beyond 14 days because there was never a problem till around 25 days.
    thanks

  • My ipod touch has been dead for about three or for weeks now it will not come back on, my ipod touch has been dead for about three or for weeks now it will not come back on

My ipod touch was dead for about three weeks, i charged it all last night and most of today, why wont it come back on? Can anyone give me advice?

Same advice you got the first time you asked the same question.

  • Ipod touch is not working .... totally dead

Just purchased the ipod touch for my daughter-- (Christmas gift)
it has shut off and will not do anything---
I have it on charge, but it will not even register on the screen that it is charging--
    any ideas?
it just shut off while she was playing on it....
could the battery be so run down that it is taking time to even show that it is charging?

Hello, I am having pretty much the same issue. And I've tried EVERYTHING that I've read up on (including your advice here) and nothing is working. My ipod touch battery was really low, but I was away from home so I didn't have the time to get to my computer right away to charge it and it died. Now my ipod screen is black, and it's totally unresponsive. I plugged it into my computer, (using the USB cord that came with it) to charge it, and nothing happened. There was no response on the ipod whatsoever, and my computer didn't even recognize it's existence. It's been dead for almost a week now, and I've tried every possible option. I pressed the home and sleep wake buttons in all the different combinations that I could find, and nothing worked. I don't want to have to go to the apple store, because I live in an area that is nowhere NEAR any of them. I just got my ipod for Christmas, and it was purchased at Walmart. My ipod is VERY well taken care of, so I know there was no damage done to it. It is dead, the battery is completely drained, and I know that's the problem, but I would like to be able to charge it and have it work again... I wish this wasn't so complicated!!! Is there ANYTHING I can do for it? Do you have ANY IDEAS for me at all? I am open to anything right now... I just want my ipod touch to work again!! Please help me??? :'-(

  • Dead Pixels covered?

I had a friend buy a Powerbook several years ago and when she noticed dead pixels a few weeks after buying the computer, they told her it wasn't covered.
I just bought a 24" iMac, and to my horror, I found three dead pixels the other night (nearly or just about two weeks after buying it)...is it worth taking back to the Apple Store? It'll be such a hassle, so I want to know if anyone has experienced this before.
    Thank you.

    Chapter 1
I had no difficulty replacing the first 24" I got - it arrived at my office and, having read about pixel probs in these forums, I got it straight out of the box and plugged it in, scouring the screen... and there was one single dead - or stuck - pixel, about 1cm up, above the apple logo. I called them up and there was no argument - replacement (special build 2.33 GHz etc) was ordered straight away and collection arranged for the first one.
    Chapter 2
The replacement arrived two days ago. Same routine - and another solitary dead pixel (I think this is a stuck one - it's dark blue) about 4cm north-west of the apple logo.... After a few Anglo-Saxon oaths, I debated whether or not not return this one but the prospect of another 2 week turn-around was too much; I got it home and loaded it up, really to see if in practice the pixel was noticeable. Because it really is very very small in that huge screen, and to be fair I struggled to see it even when looking for it, a foot away from the screen. And I have to say that it's not bugging me (I'm easily obsessed with small flaws, as well). The screen's so big and bright that it has to be a bit further away than my previous 20", and at that distance the stuck pixel is all but invisible. And it's only visible at all against a perfect white screen (very rarely if ever the case with photos). And it's smaller than most bits of dust etc which attach themselves to the screen and which I live with happily till I give it the occasional clean.
So I think me, my iMac and my stuck pixel look like we're going to get along fine together.
    The End.
PS Wouldn't mind trying the pixel-fixing programme though, if you can remember the name !!

  • PMU Dead?

My dual 1 GHz G4 MDD suddendly shut down and couldn't power up. Had the power button would glow when pressed but nothing else as others have posted. Followed the instructions from this doc
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95037
and replaced the battery. Viola, back from the dead. About a week later my G4 shut down again with the same problem. I didn't replace the battery since it was new and just reset the PMU as per instructions. No dice this time.
I think something else might be wrong as I suspect the battery is dead again but I am not sure. The battery was $19 so I'm a bit hesitant to get another if this cycle will just repeat itself.
After 7 years of being a faithful workhorse and kept up to date with the latest software, new graphics card, additional memory, 11g wireless card, it might be time for a new machine.
Any other things I can easily check before calling it quits?
PS - Loved this machine but I won't miss the jet engine fans.
    Alan

The instructions for resetting the PMU state:
Press the Cuda or PMU button ONCE. Do not press the button more than once before starting the computer up again.
What the instructions don't include is that if you press it twice, the internal memory battery will be quickly discharged. This may be what happened.
*Resetting Cuda/PMU on Power Mac G5, Power Mac G4, Power Macintosh G3*
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86760
You can get a new battery for much less than $19. Check this site for battery part numbers and sources. Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial
Also try this. Resetting the logic board can resolve many system problems. Whenever you have a
unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure
    before replacing any modules.
    1 Unplug the computer.
2 Press the Power On button on the front of the unit.
3 Open the side access panel.
4 Remove the battery from the logic board.
5 Wait at least 10 minutes before replacing the battery.
6 Make sure the battery is installed in the correct +/-
    direction.
7 Reassemble the computer and test the unit.
    Note:
This procedure resets the computer’s PRAM. Be sure to
check the computer’s time/date and other system parameter settings
     Cheers, Tom

  • Help! My iPad seems to be broken!

My iPad went dead a couple of weeks ago because my charger broke. So I eventually went out and bought a charger and put my iPad on charge, and when my iPad went flat it usually took a couple hours for it to turn on and charge so I figured it would happen again, so within the next 2 days nothing happened. It wouldn't charge nor turn on. I've even tried holding the lock and home button for 10 seconds and it won't work. I've tried plugging it into my computer but it won't come up when I plugged it in. I urgently need advice/help, I have school work and drawings I need to get off there! Someone please help me!

It might be your adapters problem, you must have left it charging a long time and it got hot and broke. This problem happened to me iPad and I found out it was my connectors problem not the adapter. If you have a friends or you own a iPhone 5 try using the iPhones connector with your adapter and, then try using your adapter with the iPhones connector. If it is not the chargers problem then you should check with your local apple store. Hope this helped.

  • On a good screen is there ANY negative black effect?

My iPhone is a replacement refurbished unit. Since my replacement, I am experiencing negative black effect and dead spot. Few weeks ago, I called Apple care and after explaining the problem, they sent me a loaner and shipped mine to Apple center for repair. The loaner was superb, enjoyed it without any negative effect or dead spot at all, and had for a week until my original unit came back. All excited, open the box and look at service report, nothing was done to the unit and indication was they couldn’t reproduce the problem so they sent the unit back to me without any repair with the same old issues.
So I called apple care again and told them the loaner I have is extremely brighter, better, than my original one and I could see the difference and the problem with the negative effect so, they transferred me to product specialist and after talking to product specialist it was like I came from planet Naboo that I have no idea what I am talking about, even when I was indicating to her that there are two different screen version 5 and 7 with the loaner being 5 and mine original 7. She asked me, “How do I know?” Told her, well dialing the diagnostic sequence on the iPhone *300… All and all she said NO, there is no difference between two products and I hanged up and went with my business and only using the my iPhone without the video because at the end of the day I am the unlucky one out of the 1.2 M iPhone units sold. Hummm. I wonder who is the lucky one now has the loaner unit for one week.

  • Facebook Export FAIL! any answers ?

So I been looking around but it seems to all be dead ends. 2 weeks ago I uploaded some photos to facebook and it all went well.
Today I decided to delete all previously uploaded photos of my daughter (not via AP3) and replace them with an album synced with AP3 to have more control and syncing and guess what!!!
I selected a bunch of images, hit the FB button and boom they appeared in the list of FB albums..........problem is they dont appear on FB, only an empty album. then you hit the sync button in AP3 and the album goes bye bye from there aswell.
I have tried logging out of FB etc. and also removing any images from stacks and checking previews and nada.....ZIP
does anyone have any ideas or do we need to wait a couple of years for the black turtleneck to give some resources back from his iPad.
    pissedoff
    Craig

thanks for the replies guys, it seems I just installed the latest 3.02 software update and it magically works now.
Its purely an aperture thing, select a photo and hit the FB button and all it was doing was creating an empty folder on FB. then a couple of minutes later the folder vanished from AP3.
    all good now though!
