2 gb datafile vs 16 gb datafile
Hi,
We are considering to move one of the databases from 2gb datafiles to 16 gb datafiles like other database.
All the datafiles are on the same location so there is not load balancing.
The size of the tablespaces are from 10gb to 35gb.
What's better few (1-3) 16gb datafiles or many 2gb ones (5 to 20) (read, write, backup, etc, ...) ?
Thanks
A few reasons. First, you don't want to have to deal with thousands of files. If you've got a 3 TB database, you'd need something like 1500 2 GB data files, and no one wants to manage 1500 files. If you've got a 3 TB data warehouse, you may be loading multiple GB of data every day, you don't want to have to create new data files every day for the nightly load. A TB data warehouse will also tend to be quite usable missing a data file, assuming partitioning is set up properly, so you tend to have slightly longer recovery windows. Data warehouses also tend to have much better backup systems whereas a smaller databases may tend to "make due" with older/ slower backup systems.

More small datafiles or one big datafile for tablespace
Hello,
I would like to create a new tablespace (about 4 GB). Could someone if it's better to create one big datafile or create 4 datafiles with 1 GB each?
Thank you.It depends. Most of the time, it's going to come down to personal preference.
If you have multiple data files, will you be able to spread them over multiple physical devices? Or do you have a disk subsystem that virtualizes many physical devices and spreads the data files across physical drives (i.e. a SAN)?
How big is the database going to get? You wouldn't want to have a 1 TB database with 1000 1 GB files, that would be a monster to manage. You probably wouldn't want a 250 GB database with a single data file either, because it would take forever to recover the data file from tape if there was a single block corruption.
Is there a data files size that fits comfortably in whatever size mount points you have? If you get 10 GB chunks of SAN at a time, for example, you would probably want data files that were an integer factor of that (i.e. 1, 2, or 5 GB) so that you can add similarly sized data files without wasting space and so that you can move files to a new mountpoint without worrying about whether they'll all fit.
Does your OS support files of an appropriate size? I know Windows had problems a while ago with files > 2 GB (at least when files extended beyond 2 GB).
In the end though, this is one of those things that probably doesn't matter too much within reason.

Many little datafiles or one big datafile?
Hi all
I have a database which grows every day. I have 10 datafiles with name users01.db , users02.dbf and etc.
And all these datafiles have 1.5Gb size. Each time every datafile reachs it's 1.5Gb size, I add new datafile. Is it correct strategy? Or I must add only extents to last datafile and allow it to grow?
Thanks...Hi,
In my point of view, it is a good approach if "table striping" is used, where data is spread across more than one device. Otherwise, if you have just one disk, then I don't see advantages or disadvantages. In addition, take a look at [url http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=1041074󾊲]more small datafiles or one big datafile for tablespace thread.

Error in opening datafile after use of DATAFILE RESIZE command
Hi Friends,
I am facing a strange problem here. We got a space problem yesterday ORA-01659: unable to allocate MINEXTENTS beyond 42 in tablespace and I increased the underlying datafiles using resize command. The datafiles were 1G earlier and I have increased them to 2G using the command
ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE 4 resize 2G;
It went fine and I saw the free space in my tablespace. But after this when I try to drop a table using a script which connects to this db as a schema owner ( the script just selects all tables from dictionary and drops it using 'drop table x cascade constraints' , It thorws the following error

Confused with datafile status in v$datafile and v$recovery_file
Hi All,
Am facing great confused problem in prod database, accidently i created datafile so i tried to drop it by using "alter database datafile' ' offline drop"
But its showing recovery status in v$datafile and offline status in v$recovery_file.
Please inform how to resolve this issue.
Regards,
Yasser.(Oracle DBA)You add datafiles to a Tablespace and when you remove a datafile from the database you have to drop the associated tablespace that the file had belonged to.
Exactly what actions did you take in what order to create and eliminate this datafile to and from the database?
What is the Oracle version?
What are the results of the following queries?
select ts#, file#, rfile#, status, enabled from v$datafile
where name = 'x'
select "ONLINE", online_status, error
from v$recover_file where file# = n

How can I clean all data in a database but keep all datafile still same nam
hi,
How can I get a easy way to clean all data in a database but keep all datafiles still same name and location just like a new created database?
dbca has two choice: create templet without datafile or with all datafiles but not empty datafiles.
thanksWhat version is your database? DBCA in 10gR2 allows you to create a template from an existing database using only the structure. From DBCA
From an existing database (structure only)
The template will contain structural information about the source database including database options, tablespaces, datafiles, and initialization parameters specified in the source database. User defined schemas and thier data will not be part of the created template. -
Datafile size minor than 4 Gb: is this a bug?
Hi all! I have a tablespace made up by 1 datafile (size = 4 Gb). Oracle 9.2.0.4.0 (on Win2k server) seems incapable of managing this; in fact, I receive ora-04031: unable to allocate 8192 bytes of shared memory but the memory of Oracle is configured correctly. Resizing this tablespace and adding a new datafile so that every datafile is 2 Gb large, I don't receive the error any longer. what do you think about this?
Bye. Ste.Hello everybody;
The Buffer Cache Advisory feature enables and disables statistics gathering for predicting behavior with different cache sizes. The information provided by these statistics can help you size the Database Buffer Cache optimally for a given workload. The Buffer Cache Advisory information is collected and displayed through the V$DB_CACHE_ADVICE view.
The Buffer Cache Advisory is enabled via the DB_CACHE_ADVICE initialization parameter. It is a dynamic parameter, and can be altered using ALTER SYSTEM. Three values (OFF, ON, READY) are available.
DB_CACHE_ADVICE Parameter Values
OFF: Advisory is turned off and the memory for the advisory is not allocated.
ON: Advisory is turned on and both cpu and memory overhead is incurred.
Attempting to set the parameter to the ON state when it is in the OFF state may lead to the following error: ORA-4031 Inability to allocate from the Shared Pool when the parameter is switched to ON. If the parameter is in a READY state it can be set to ON without error because the memory is already allocated.
READY: Advisory is turned off but the memory for the advisory remains allocated. Allocating the memory before the advisory is actually turned on will avoid the risk of ORA-4031. If the parameter is switched to this state from OFF, it is possible that an ORA-4031 will be raised.
Make sure too that you dont need to use RMAN program to make backup...baceuse the large pool is used to this too.
Regards to everybody

Here comes the issue ...when i try to restore the db

RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile 2 found to restore
RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile 1 found to restoreSO MY QUESTION OR DOUBT IS WHY AT THE END IT FAILS THAT THERE IS NO BACKUP FOR DATAFILE 1,2,3,4 ??? AS WE CAN SEE ABOVE IT IS PRESENT IN MY BACKUPSET ??
ANY IDEA /HINTS/TIPS ?
I searched on google and somebody mentioned to a similar case that it could be a problem with 'CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP OFF' where as in my case i have set it to 'CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON'
Somehow looks like that the control file is not having latest backup info ... :-( I already took a fresh backup 2 times and landed up in same issue.. not sure where i am doing a mistake.
Regards

Meanwhile i also looked in the trace file folder to see if there are any clues. here goes the content of alert_log.file

Taking the datafile offline when the database is in NOARCHIVELOG mode
My question is when the database is in No Archive log mode i'm not able to take the datafile offline.
When i tried in my computer i have noticed fallowing.
case1:
SYS>alter database datafile 5 offline;
ERROR at line1;
ORA-01145:offline immediate disallowed unless media recovery enabled.
case 2:
SYS>alter database datafile 5 offline immediate;
ERROR at line 1;
ORA-00933:SQL command not properly ended
case3:
I have tried the command alter database datafile 6 offline drop; (in NOARCHIVELOG mode) and it is showing the same effect as alter database datafile 6 offline; ( in ARCHIVELOG mode).
*In the NOARCHIVELOG mode are we really dropping the datafile to take the datafile offline? Will you please tell me the effect of keyword drop.JohnWatson wrote:
You've marked your question answered - was that a mistake?
The answer is that you cannot directly take a datafile offline in noarchivelog mode. You must take the tablespace offline:
Hmm, are you certain about that? Perhaps I'm missing something.

How can I find which datafile a row in a huge partitioned table belongs to?
Hello guys.
We have a bunch of potentially corrupt LOB data in a 15TB partitioned table. I have run a query to find out what rows may be corrupt. Is it possible to find out if these belong to a common datafile (the are 450 datafiles in this tablespace)?
Oracle 10.2.0.4 single instance on HP-UX
Any help appreciated

SandyTo checking corruption datafile level you can use dbv utility.But to fixing(marking) corruption you have to use dbms_repair package.Please refer below links

How does oracle write to datafiles in a tablespace?
hi all
Suppose I have a tablespace consisting of two datafiles. When I need to wirte data onto it,how does ORACLE
write ? Does it initially write to the first datafile and then write to the second datafile when the first datafile getting full or write to two datafiles in an random manner?
Thanks for your reply.hi all
I have read reply in reponse to thread "tablespaces or datafile " and testcase in that thread shows that ORACLE will write to datafiles in round-robin manner.
But my test show totally different result:
SQL>
SQL> create tablespace ts_maoxl
2 datafile '/crash/oradata/TESTDB/datafile/1.bdf' size 5m,
3 '/crash/oradata/TESTDB/datafile/2.bdf' size 5m
4 EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL;
Tablespace created
SQL>
SQL> create table maoxl(id char(2000),id3 char(2000),id2 char(2000)) tablespace ts_maoxl;
Table created
SQL>
SQL> declare
2 begin
3 for i in 0..99 loop
4 insert into maoxl values('x','y','z');
5 end loop;
6 commit;
7 end;
8 /
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed
SQL> select count(*) from maoxl;

Empty datafile with special characters in name
Hello all
I'm having an issue with an empty datafile that is in recover mode.
Previously the following has been successful :
alter database create datafile 'fully_qualified_file_name' as 'fully_qualified_file_name' ;
recover datafile 'fully_qualified_file_name' ;
alter database datafile 'fully_qualified_file_name' online;
However this time it doesnt work as I get errors :
ORA-01516: nonexistent log file, data file, or temporary file
Using the file id doesnt work either.
When I created a control file trace I can see the datafile has special characters in the name :
'/oracle/PRD/112_64/dbs/PSPR3I ^?;^?'
As it is empty, would it be possible to create anothr empty datafile
using :
alter database create datafile '/oracle/PRD/112_64/dbs/PSPR3I ^?;^?'
as '/oracle/PRD/spdata2/r3i_8/r3i.data8';
then recover datafile 'fully_qualified_file_name' ;
alter database datafile 'fully_qualified_file_name' online;
How do oracle commands cope with special characters?
Thanks for your adviceuser6737818 wrote:

It should work using a file number as the source file definition and a new name for the new file. Works for me:orcl> alter database create datafile 7 as 'c:\tmp\newname.dbf';
Database altered.

Is it posisble to use DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT to rename datafile names
Hi,
I want to clone a database on the same server.
My datafiles start with the name of the SID, for examplel: /u04/oradata/ORACP/ORACP_applic_data_01.dbf'
I want to use "duplicate fom active database", but with the parameter DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT i can only change the directory to clone the datafile to, but the datafile itself is not renamed.
I am correct?
Is the only way to solve this, to use SET NEWNAME for all the datafiles to clone?
Any help is appreciated.
Reagrds,
HarryHarry;
Turns out I have a better document :
http://www.visi.com/~mseberg/rman/create_a_duplicate_database_on_the_same_host.html
I understand your concern, as far as suggestions double check everything. Thinking RMAN won't overwrite a MOUNTED file.
*"To restore a datafile, either mount the database, or keep it open and take the datafile to be restored offline."*
Source - Database Backup and Recovery Advanced User's Guide.
When NOFILENAMECHECK is used with the DUPLICATE command, RMAN does not validate the filenames during restoration. Last I heard you don't use NOFILENAMECHECK when using the same host.
See - Restoring and Recovering Database Files - Database Backup and Recovery User's Guide 11g Release 2 (11.2) E10642-03

Unable to resize asm datafile even though I resized the (logical) datafile
I have a bigfile that went above 16tb - this is causing me grief in a restore to a netapp filer that has a 16tb limit.
So we went thru the hassles of moving data around. I issued the

The datafile itself from v$datafile shows 15tb - BUT the asm file is still 18tb in size.
Should it not be the same - is this something others have faced where the asm file doesnt match?
