2 part question: updating iphone & ringtones

I feel technologically challenged and just plain helpless!
I have been trying to load and install the update all day long. I get as far as downloading it (which has happened twice) but doesn't install even though I've checked off to install immediately after downloading. What am I doing wrong? I can't install, synch, anything!
Also, I downloaded at least a half a dozen songs from itunes that showed a bell (read: ringtone) and now that they are in my library, they don't show up with the bell (read: not compatible to be a ringtone) and yet I go look for the song on itunes and the bell is there. Can we say what the...?
I am hoping that someone, anyone can point me in the right direction. Thanks so much in advance:)

On important updates, I always set to "download only" and wait to install until I know I have the full update on the computer. If the download stalls in the middle of the update, you can be lost. Make sure that you have downloaded the full update, then close and reopen iTunes and let it install when it tells you that it has the update for you. I disconnected the iPhone while the computer was downloading the 153 MB of firmware and software update and then reconnected after the download was complete.
When the warning was given on the phone with the yellow caution sign to connect to iTunes, I was already connected to the computer and iTunes and I simply waited it out and followed all of the install instructions. This is a firmware update and it takes longer than a simple os update.
My update went well and most is fine except for new changes that I discover while using the iPhone. They no longer detail the changes for us and it can be surprising to find some of the changes.

    Computerguy,
In order to use the iTunes WiFi Store on the iPhone you need to sync the account information to the iPhone as discussed in this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306432
    Hope this helps,

You cannot bypass this security measure. You need to recover your AppleID from appleID.apple.com
If you can't send the password recovery to a secondary email, contact Apple Support.

Were you running iOS 7 beta?  If so, as a developer you need to log into the Developer forum for assistance.

  • Three Part Question involving OS 9.2.1 & OS 10.4 on Wallstreet Powerbook

Please forgive me if there is already a topic on this particular issue. I looked, but was unable to find one.
NOTE: It was suggested to me that I post this question here, in large part because of a particular member who is a Wallstreet expert. So... here's hoping. :D
Last year I decided to purchase a Sonnet G4 Upgrade Card for my G3 Wallstreet Powerbook. Due to a variety of resons I won't bore you with, I ended up putting this particular project on the shelf while I was busy with other things.
Things have slowed down a bit and I want to get back to this project. One of the requirements for this card is that I be running both OS9 & OSX. Therefore, I have to install both OS's.
I have the OS 9.2.1 disk that came with my purchase of 10.1 when it first came out and the OSX v 10.4 Tiger disk that I bought last year. (FWIW I also have the OS10.1 disk and the 8.5, 8.6 & 9.1 disks.)
Now that you have the background information, here's my problem: It's been too long since I've done this.
    So here's the 3-Part question:
    1. Do I install both on one partition that takes up the whole 8meg disk or do I make one partition for each OS?
    2. Which OS disk do I use for formatting & partitioning?
    3. Which OS do I install first?
Thank you in advance for your help.

    Wallstreet   Other OS

    eric,
    1) If your HD is 8 GB, I don't believe you want to partition. As you may already know, the Wallstreet has a limitation when it comes to any version of OSX. If the HD is larger than 8 GB, then the HD must be partitioned: The first partition must be less than 8 GB and this partition is used for OSX, but this does not preclude installing 9.x. As the article below states, an 8 GB HD may be slightly larger than 8 GB depending on how the manufacturer sized it. Apple uses 1024K=1 MB vs. a vendor that may use 1000K=1 MB. Having said that, if you boot to the OSX CD and the destination HD is grayed-out, you will have to partition the HD.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106235
The problem with partitioning a small drive like yours is the wasted space...too much for OSX and not enough for 9.x or vice versa. Since I don't know what apps and files you will be using for both OSes, it is just simpler to have one volume. Both OSes can work quite nicely on the same volume; this is how apple shipped all their new Macs.
    2) Either 9.x's Drive Setup or 10.x's Disk Utility can properly initialize the HD: Use the MacOS Extended Format (HFS Extended); if using Disk Utility, be sure to check the option to install the MacOS 9 HD Driver; if using Drive Setup, it is installed automatically.
    3) I would install 9.x first; make sure everything is up to snuff before installing 10.x. However, either OS can be installed first.
    A few suggestions...
    - Since you probably have the original 8 GB HD, I would boot to your 9.x CD > open Drive Setup in the Utilities folder on the CD > go to Initialization Options > select 'zero all data' > initialize (no partition and HFS Extended). This will thoroughly clean the HD and force sparing (reallocation) of any bad blocks. After zeroing, select Test Disk and make sure it is OK. I suggest using Drive Setup since it has the Test Disk function...Disk Utility does not. Once Drive Setup is launched, Drive Setup Help is available in the menu bar.
    - Once the HD has been prepped, I would boot to your OSX CD and make sure the 8 GB limit does not affect you. If it does, you will have to think about a very small partition to get under the 8 GB limit or larger partitions for each OS. As long as you are booted to OSX, you can go ahead and install it if you wish.
    - If you do install OSX first, to install 9.x you must boot to the 9.x CD and select Clean Install. Also, when installing any 9.x software, boot into 9.x first...do not install when running in Classic.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106294
    - If you want to run your 9.1 as Classic when booted to 10.x, update it to 9.2.2; this will give you the best compatibility.
    - The Wallstreet natively supports up to OSX 10.2.8, but 10.3.x and 10.4.x can run if you use XPostFacto.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/
    - Since Tiger came on DVDs and not CDs (unless you used the CD-exchange program), you will not be able to install Tiger on the Wallstreet from your optical drive if you don't have a DVD-ROM drive. I installed Tiger on my Wallstreet by removing the HD, placing it in a FireWire HD enclosure, then connecting it to my iBook and installing Tiger.
    - You can save HD space (about 1.5 GB) by performing a custom install of OSX; here is a sample for Tiger:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301229
    - How much installed memory do you have?
I covered a lot of ground here so feel free to ask any questions.

  • Two part question 1) what happens if you  sign into messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5 after it expired? does the whole application not work or just imessage? 2) does installing messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5  delete ichat?

    Two part question
    1) what happens if you  sign into messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5 after it expired? does the whole application not work or just imessage? can you stil use AIM, jabbar, google talk, or yahoo?  if you open messages beta does it immediately tell you that messages beta expired?
    2) does installing messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5  delete ichat or just transform ichat into messages beta giving the illusion that ichat is deleted?

    Hi,
It was never completely clear whether it was just hidden or whether Apple ran a download page for iChat 6.
As the Download for Messages Beta was separate and "Deleted" iChat it would seem it would be another download for iChat 6.
iMessages will not function as it is only an Account type within Messages and iChat 6 does not have it.
Therefore messages on the iPhone will not sync to the Mac. (until you get Mountain Lion and Messages in that OS X version).
Mountain Lion and it's full version of Messages will not sync the iMessages that have happened in between the 14th December 2012  (end date of Messages beta) and the Install of Mountain Lion if you decide on that route.

  • Updated iPhone Software to vers 2.0. Now "Sent" messages & folder are gone

*Just downloaded (40 mins) & installed iPhone Software version 2.0.*
Contacts/Phone/Bookmarks/Music Library/Picts are all OK. _PROBLEM IS I've lost all my Sent Email messages and Sent Folder for each mail account and no longer have access to any messages sent from my iPhone_. It's ironic because during iPhone 2.0 update, there was a message about backing up mail/contacts/picts et al. After update & firmware update, iTunes restored info to my iPhone, but all sent messages are gone. Everything else appears to be OK.
*Does anyone have any idea how i can retrieve them.* (Seems if they were backed up to iTunes, that it should be possible to restore the same information).
[I turned off "Push" by navigating on the iPhone:SETTINGS>FETCH NEW DATA>PUSH- "off". Since turning PUSH off, new sent messages (i.e. after 2.0 upgrade) appear in sent folder, but older sent messages are still missing in action.
Your thoughts & comments are greatly appreciated!
    Geoff

This may be odd... responding to my own posting, but for anyone with similar issue, I just spoke with the people at "1-800-myiphone".
Result: "Sent Messages, and Sent Message Folder are both temporary, and are not part of itunes/iphone syncing or backup features".
To restore the prior Sent Messages that existed in the earlier iphone software version 1.14 is impossible as messages are not stored on AT&T's servers, and iTunes does not sync "sent messages." The only work-around to re-populate missing sent messages is for the recipients of those messages to forward messages back from their computer, not their iphones, (Remember iPhone strips attachments from forwarded messages, therefore recipients who have iphones must 'forward back message from their computer only).
After migrating to iphone software version 2.0, it is a really good idea to do a "Bcc:" (Blind Carbon Copy) to onself on all future messages. That way messages will arrive in your 'inbox' which can be synced and restored via iTunes software.
In short, I think Apple is using a technical glitch in it's software update to coerce users to use the "MobileMe" service that Pushes and syncs messages to an iPhone and the user's other computers.
Hope this posting is helpful to others.
    Sincerely,
    Geoff

  • What cause searching network problem after updating iphone 6 from iOS 8.1.2 TO iOS 8.1.3?

what cause searching network problem after updating iphone 6 from iOS 8.1.2 TO iOS 8.1.3?

SSince Apple does not support downgrading the iOS I suggest you start a new question that gives a good title to a specific problem. Then in the body of the thread describe the problem in detail, tell us what steps you have tried so far to correct the problem, what happened, and what error messages you received.

  • Already asked AT&T and Apple Support. Updated iPhone 4 to iOS 7.0.3, some older Visual Voicemails disappeared. Just noticed today. Not backed up in iTunes. Can I get them back?

New to this site, sorry if I didn't enter my question correctly ... Updated iPhone 4 to iOS 7.0.3, some older Visual Voicemails disappeared. Just noticed today. Not backed up in iTunes. Can I get them back?

    HALF-SOLUTION!!!! (Restoring only, basically.)
    Restore the phone via iCloud.com
    1. Go to iCloud.com , and log in.
    2. If you want a back up, make sure you back it up to itunes now!
    3. Now back to iCloud.com - select the device you want. Press "Erase iPhone" (or iPad, iPod whatever).
You will go through a few steps. Skip the phone number and leave a message, as it isn't lost. Your phone will be restored. No need for plugging in!
    4. IMPORTANT: Just set it up as usual. Language, country blah. But then you'll get to a step where it says something like "This iPhone was erased with iCloud. Log in with the Apple ID you used to erase it". In this case, my Dad's. So please do that. Later on, the phone will ask for an Apple ID to be used for the phone. I put my own one as I didn't want my dads!!!! Lol....
    5. Plug into iTunes and back-up.
As for updating, I'm still on 7.0.2,,, it ain't working on my phone or itunes!! :(

  • Can you make iPhone ringtones (M4R) in Logic Express without GarageBand 08?

Can you make iPhone ringtones (M4R) in Logic Express without GarageBand 08?
    If so how?
    Thanks,
    Ed

Not exactly ... while you can make a ringtone with any application that you would like, Soundtrack Pro 2 and Logic do not have a conversion to the ringtone format. Mv4R or something like that. GarageBand does.
I answered my own question I guess
    Thanks anyway,
    Ed
