2 PDF's won't combine into 1 file?

How do I combine two PDF files, using Mac OS X 10.7.5? I've tried following other suggestions such as open PDF, open thumbnails, drop and drag it... however, I'm not given an option to just save... instead I have "Save A Version" which doesn't save them together.
I've tried everything from hovering over the name in the title bar to access the little triangle, which does Not appear for me... to making duplicate copies to work from,... to high-lighting both docs while in thumbnails then selecting duplicate,... to exporting them. No matter what I do, they keep seperating. I made these docs, so they're not locked with a unknown password, at least as far as I can see.
Please help!

I figured it out - We had to make combined pdf's for college financial aid verification and realized that on the new Mac's nothing works the same as the old OSX systems which were more straight forward.
Method 1:  If all your pdf files are consecutive in the finder:
1. Click on first pdf.
2. Hold shift key and drag mouse to highlight/select all the others as a group
3. drag the group to the Preview alias in your dock
4. All the pdf's should open in a single file
5. Make sure they are in the order you want (in my case the first file was at the bottom and I dragged it to the top position)
6. Select all  PDF's EXCEPT the first one as a group (Click second pdf, hold shift key, select the rest so they're all highlighted).  Drag the entire group on top of the first pdf.
7. A black line will appear below the first pdf. Hit the arrow key above it (upper left) to uncollapse the list and you'll see all the duplicates of the pdf's appear below it.
8. Save the file and the originals will disappear but the pdf's above the black line will save as a single, multipage file.
Alternative if your pdf's are not in the same folder one after the other:
1. Open the first pdf file you want to combine with others
2. view thumbnails.
3. delete any pages you don't want (if a multi-page document)
4. drag in each of the pdf files you want to consolidate into the thumbnail box. You can drag them straight from the Finder if you want. (I didn't open them individually)
5. Put the first file on the top. Then drag the next file on top of it. (the first pdf will be temporarily be outlined by a grey box  when you do this correctly).
6. Let go. The first pdf should reflect a "1" beneath it. The second pdf may not show up. If that happens, notice there is an arrow button above the first pdf. Click to uncollapse the "tree" and the second pdf will show up. Beneath the two pdf's will be a thin black line. The original copy of the second pdf will still be listed below the line.  Don't worry, when you save, that will go away.
7. Now drag all the other files, one at a time, above the black line.  A duplicate will appear with the number "1" below it. Your original will still be below the line.
8. Keep going until all your pdf's are duplicated. When you save - the files above the line will be in a single document, the originals below the line will be deleted from that specific file.
(you can also highlight all the pdf's except the first one and drag them on top of the first pdf has a group)
Easy once you get a hang of it, but wish Apple provided better instructions so we don't have to find it by trial and error.

  • PDF maker won't combine doc docx files

Hello, I can no longer combine Office type files, specifically .doc or .docx files in the pdf builder.  It will only accept pdf files when combining multiple files to build a single pdf file.  I know this used to work (at least on my PC).  I also am aware that I can save them as pdf in Word and then combine but that takes much longer and is a work around for a pretty basic function that I can't get to work.  I've searched this forum and have yet to find a resolution for this problem.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Running Mac OS 10.8.2 and Acrobat X.  Office 2011.  Thanks.

  • Podcasts won't combine into one album.

Ever since I upgraded to 9.0.0.70 some of my Podcasts (not all of them) will not combine (append) into the original Podcast album. As I download a new issue, each new Podcast issue creates an ablum of its own. I can't seem to get them to combine into one album - the original album. Why is this happening? How can I combine the new issues into the original album?
    Thanks, Jim Finney

    I resolved my issue.
    Do the following:
    1. Go to settings/main menu and make sure the podcast setting is on.
    2. Connect your iPod to your computer and launch iTunes. On the iTunes menu go to edit/preferences/podcasts and click on the iPod preferences button. Make sure you have the podcasts you want updated checked. (WARNING!!! This step will likely erase and podcasts you have on your iPod now). It should warn you of this.
This resolved it for me and it now works like a charm. You May not even have to do step 2. Let me know how it works out.

  • Word attachments won't open into Word application

My dad complained that his iMac G5 opens Word attachments automatically into the trial version of MS Office Word.
Eventhough he purchased a copy of Office, Mail continued to open Word attachments to the trial version. Because the trial version of Office is expired, the attachments wouldn't open unless I dragged the docs unto the desktop and changed the Info on the documents to open with the purchased version of Word.
In one attempt to resolve the problem, I trashed the trial version, Mail popped up the dialogue box that asked what application did I want to open the attachment with. I chose the purchased version of Office, but Mail won't do this automatically. It still asked to choose the application to open the document.
I went into his Documents folder and picked one Word doc to change the Info @ "Open With" and chose MS Word app and checked the box "Use this application to open all documents like this." Still didn't work. I then manually changed the Info in all of his Word docs to open into the purchased version of Word. Problem still not resolved.
Found out that his PDF docs won't open into Preview automatically too! I get the dialogue box... "Choose application to open document."
I looked through Preferences and couldn't find a solution.
I'm the family IT, and I need help.
I need Mail to open attachments automatically into their correct applications.

Per this link, you must uninstall the Office 2004 trial or Test Drive version before installing the full purchased version.

Since you have already uninstalled the Test Drive version, I suggest uninstalling the full purchased version and then re-install it.

  • I purchased the Adobe PDF Pack but it won't allow me to convert any files to pdf or combine multiple files to into 1 pdf form. It keeps saying "Error occurred while trying to access the file". WHY

I purchased the Adobe PDF Pack for $7.50/month (or $89.99/yr) but it won't allow me to convert any files to pdf or combine multiple files into 1 pdf form. It keeps saying "An error occurred while trying to access the service". WHY is this happening & How can I fix it?

    Hi hpmg,
It seems you are trying to access the service via Adobe Reader. Make sure you are signed in with your Adobe ID. Is Reader updated to the latest patch v 11.0.09?
It might be possible that a firewall or antivirus might be breaking the connectivity from Reader to the server.
Try accessing the service from the browser: https://cloud.acrobat.com/exportpdf  and check if that works for you.

  • Hiding filenames when combining multiple files into a single .pdf

I'm fairly new to this Acrobat X. I'm trying to assemble my portfolio to distribute to employers but I cannot seem to get rid/hide the filenames in the final pdf file. I was using the option to 'combine multiple files into a single pdf' because I was compiling images and documents to a single readable pdf file. I got all that done but once I open it, I'd see that each page would still contain the original file names rather than page numbers - which I prefer not to have employers see for the sake of tidiness (and I refuse to use the Adobe portfolio because it's not really efficient on space or design. I prefer a simple page-by-page pdf). So I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to hide my file names, change them into page numbers or getting rid of them all together so the 'Table of Contents' in the pdf preview mode would not show anything, I would really much appreciate it.
    -Ss

Well, when the .pdf is in the final, deliverable form; I open it in Mac preview mode and the sidebar is always extended showing a 'table of contents' rather than having each document in the pdf file have a number designating a page name, it shows each individual filename the pdf is composed of. Not too sure about bookmark, though. Thanks for the reply!
If you want, I can send the file to you.

  • Large excel files won't combine to pdf in Acrobat X or XI

I have large Excel files (0.3 to 1.2 MB) that I used to combine into a single pdf.  It will only work now on Excel files smaller than 1MB.  This was working a few weeks ago.  What happened?  I have tried on computers that have both Acrobat X and XI (we have both scattered around our building).
    Any ideas?  Thanks.

FileOpen is a security add-on, which is needed to open some files. Not a part of Adobe software. Maybe you need to upgrade or report it: http://www.fileopen.com/

  • I have nine, 1-page PDF files that are accessible and need to combine into 1 PDF file.  I have tried appending, adding and the combine PDFs process. The file created is not keeping my changes. The created file is partially accessible but I have to re-fix

I have nine, 1-page PDF files that are accessible and need to combine into 1 PDF file.  I have tried appending, adding and the combine PDFs process. The file created is not keeping my changes. The created file is partially accessible but I have to re-fix issues I had fixed in the single files. I need suggestions on what else can be done if any. Using Acrobat pro XI.

Out of habit, I tend to combine PDF files in the Page Thumbnails pane by right-click then "Insert Pages" -> "From File". For me, this preserves the tags from both documents, although the tags may have to be moved into the right location (if I recall correctly the tags for the inserted pages get put at the end of the tag structure, regardless of where the pages are inserted), If I first put the tags for the document to be inserted inside a container tag like Section, it makes the process easier. Moving that set of tags to the right place is the only re-fixing that I recall having to do. What behavior are you experiencing?

    Hi Fishcpa,
I apologize for the inconvenience.  I think you were taking correct steps to combine those Word and PDF files, but  it seems that the process encoutered either a time out or the server was busy.  Please try again and let us know if you still have the same issue.

    4. Name the combined file and click "Combine" button

  • Command line command for combine jpeg files into a pdf file

I want to learn if we have any command line sentence to combine jpg files.
normally from the windows explorer window
i can select all jpg files and when i click on right button on the window they shows Combine supported files in acrobat and then i check if single file is selected and i clicked on combine files button.
and then i put name of the file and press the save button.
But i want to process this steps via command line commands.
Can you show any answer to me.

You don't say what version of Acrobat you are using, but I expect you could do it with Acrobat XI's Actions feature. Maybe even in 10.0. Since this is an enterprise deployment forum, I suggest you find a better forum and ask about Actions and Batch Processing.

    Good day,
I have installed Acrobat DC, and would like to combine 2 files. One is excel allready converted to PDF - No problem. The other one is from Pastel mailed as PDF.
When trying to merge the files, this file ask for a Password. No password was issued from the setup or mail?

    Good day abrieb93050306,
I can understand your concern, however can you please let me know that are you able to open both the PDF files ( the one you converted form excel to pdf & the other pdf that was mailed to you ) individually without using any password?
As it asks for the password, it means that the postal mailed PDF is password protected. You can ask for the password from the sender of the postal mail & then try to combine the files.
Please follow the steps in the provided KB doc.to combine the files : Combine files into single PDF | Adobe Acrobat DC tutorials
This will probably resolve your issue.
Let me know if you still experience any issue.

  • Combine into a single PDF bugs, Acrobat 9

There are a things about using the Combine into a single PDF document that are quite frustrating. Two of them have been the case for a few versions of Acrobat, one just since Acrobat 9.
Firstly, only in Acrobat 9 when dragging files into the combine files window I can't ever drag a document to the bottom of the list. If I try it always jumps to the top and then the only way to move it to the bottom is pressing the 'Move Down' button until it reaches there. Ok when you have a handfull of documets. Annoying when there are 30 or so.
Second, when adding 'Outlook Items' the converter always crashes once it reaches the Outlook item whilst converting all the documents. Obviously you can get around this by converting the document first, then adding it to the list, but it's an extra step you do not need to take when dealing with Word, or Excel documents, etc.
Thirdly, if you do not start by opening a PDF document, then click Combine files (i.e. if you open Acrobat without a document open, then click the 'Combine Files' button, if at any point you open then close another PDF document (say to check it's the correct document before inserting it) it automatically closes all of Acrobat, and you lose all the work you've put in sorting the documents into a correct order, etc.
This third one is by far the most frustrating. A warning dialogue saying "Are you sure you want to cancel combining files" would suffice.

By flattening it now will successfully merge into one file, but now there's a new problem.  There are fields that have responses that go beyond the visible size of the field (so there's a + showing on the field).  When I merge to the single PDF anything beyond the visible field size is not there.  Is there anyway of retaining the ability to scroll the fields?

  • How to combine book-files into one IND-file

    Hello,
I'm trying to make one InDesign-file from the separate files included in a book.
I know the book option Export to PDF but what I want is something like:
add the pages of bookfile 1 to a new document,
then add the pages of bookfile 2 to that new document (at the end)
then add the pages of bookfile 3 to that new document (at the end)
until all pages of all bookfiles are combined into one document.
I don't want to place the pages (what makes them imported pages like images).
Is this possible? [platform Windows - Javascript]
What I figured out (as a non-programmer) is
    to open the bookfile
    var myDocument = app.open(File("/c/Bookname.indb"), false);
use a counter for the number of bookfiles in the book
    for( i=0; i< myDocument.bookContents.count(); i++ )
to retrieve the name of the bookfile
    var myINDFile = myDocument.bookContents.item(i).fullName;

Theres a Move Pages -command in Pages panels menu. With it you can move pages also between documents... may be you could use that programmatically too? Guys in InDesign Scripting forum might know better, though some of them reads this forum too....
