2 wifi networks running at once - is it possible?

Hi all,
Not sure if this is the right place or not. I just got Time Capsule in the post this morning. I'm using a withe intel based iMac. Our internet router (provided by the broadband company) is a wifi router. I want to be able to use the internet connection, as well as using Time Capsule - but at the same time. I thought I'd cracked it, using Air port I told TC to join the existing network - but this failed (I think its because the router is a Netgear DG834GT which is 802.11b and TC is 802.11n - I guess thats why they won't talk to each other. The other way is to switch between the two routers and not be connected to both at the same time.
I wanted to plug my printer into the TC so my wife and son can use it wirelessly. At the moment I have only managed to get it working by putting TC downstairs (where the ADSL port comes into the house), putting a wire between the broadband router and the TC. This means that I am not able to connect my printer as I don't want it in the living room.
Any help in sorting this would be fantastic.
Many Thanks in advance.

You can use both your existing Netgear wireless router and the Time Capsule at the same time - but you need to connect the two via an ethernet cable.
What I suggest is that you use the Airport Utility to enable bridge mode on the Time Capsule. Run the utility, select Manual Setup, click on the Internet button, and next to "Connection Sharing" select "Bridge Mode" from the drop down box. Then cable one of the Time Capsule ethernet ports to a spare LAN port on your Netgear router.
What this "dual band" network setup achieves is the following:
1. n-capable wireless computers can connect to your network at high speed via the Time Capsule
2. older wireless computers continue to connect to your network via the Netgear router
3. your Netgear router continues to provide internet connection sharing for your entire network
4. any computer, connected (via cabled or wireless) to either the Netgear router or the Time Capsule, will be able to access the Time Capsule hard drive and the printer cabled to the Time Capsule USB port.

  • Mac NOT automatically connecting to preferred wifi network

    Hi,
I am facing a problem with OS X 10.9.1 (Mavericks) wifi connection.
I use a Time Capsule as a base station and 13" Macbook Air (2012). The base station is connected to the internet through a PPOE connection.
    Here are the details.
Since upgrading to OS X 10.9.1, my Mac automatically connects to preferred wifi network ONLY WHEN the wifi is available at start up or when the Mac wakes up from sleep, but NOT OTHERWISE.
Before the upgrade, the Mac automatically connected to the preferred wifi network not just at start up, but whenever the wifi became available.
In other words, after the upgrade, if I boot up the Time Capsule base station and the Mac simultaneously, the Mac scans for the base station wifi network (this is configured as the top preferred wifi network) at start up, but since the base staion is still booting up, the Mac doesn't find the wifi.
But once the base station has booted up and wifi is available, the Mac no longer bothers to join it.  At this point, the Mac is also not able to do Time Machine backups to the Time Capsule because it is not able to locate the Time capsule disk over the wifi.
This situation remains (i.e., the Mac being not connected to the wifi) unless I do ONE of the following:
    1. I manually select the preferred wifi network using the wifi icon at the top of the screen;  OR
    2. I put the Mac to sleep (by closing the cover) and then wake it up.  On wake up, it connects automatically to the preferred wifi network; OR
    3. I turn of the wifi (using the wifi icon on the top) and turn it back on, at which point, the Mac automatically connects to the preferred wifi network.
I have tried everything possible including contacting Apple support, but so far the issue is unresolved.
Appreciate any help you can provide.
    Prem

I have had wireless problems intermittently for a year, and seriously for 6 weeks. Apple denied the issue and was no help in spite of many tens of thousands of people on their own discussions complaining. I found a post suggesting a couple of things which fixed the problem. I don't know if both are necessary, but the first by itself does not solve the problem.
Lock the channel of your router to channel 1, apparently Apple and 802.11n don't play well together on higher channels. When this becomes a standard this will be resolved I hope.
Open your network preferences, select 'airport' and advanced. Delete unused networks. Select your network.
Open TCP/IP and write down all the settings, configure iPv4 manually. Enter the settings manually. Turn off IpV6.
Open DNS and write down your DNS server. Delete it and re-enter it manually.
This has worked on 2 macbooks and an iMac for the last 3 weeks with no network drops.

  • Original Airport Express to extend range of non-Apple WiFi network

I own one of the original Aiport Express devices in addition to an Actiontec PK5000 modem/router.  I would like to use the Airport Express to extend the range of the non-Apple router/wifi network.
I heard it is possible to do this using a direct connection with an ethernet cable.  Is this possible?
    Thanks

With the AirPort Express (AX) powered up, hold in the reset button for 8-10 seconds and then release. Allow a minute for the AX to restart.
Connect the AX to the Actiontec gateway with the Ethernet cable, which I assume is working correctly.
Open AirPort Utility and click Continue to follow the guided setup to "Create a wireless network". Use the exact same wireless network name, WPA2 Security, and wireless network password as the Actiontec network.
AirPort Utility should recommend "Bridge Mode" for the AX, which is the correct setting.
Once the AX is updated with the new settings, be sure to power cycle the entire network. That means powering everything off, waiting a minute, then powering up the Actiontec first for a minute, then the AX, then each device one at time until everything is powered back up.
If the Actiontec is using standard wireless settings, the network will behave as if it is one large wireless network.

  • Application crashes (after changing wifi network?)

    Hi
I've noticed that new apps I've installed (facebook, remote, last.fm, twitterific) work fine whilst in the confines of my wifi network.
However, once I've taken the phone out and about and connected to other networks the apps are rendered unusable - they just crash on startup, all of them
It doesn't happen with any preinstalled apps?
Maybe it's just coincidence but either way it renders all that good stuff absolutely useless.
I've submitted the crash report and manually views the crashes in /username/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice
Doesn't mean much to me though - say's backtrace unavailable and EXCBADINSTRUCTION (SIGILL) is given as the exception.
Anyone else having the same problems?

Let's look for another possibility -- does it also happen after you sync the phone to iTunes? If you sync the phone but do not copy apps purchased on the phone back to iTunes it is well-known that they will stop working on the phone. There's even a warning about this in the iPhone prompt that asks if you want to sync the apps to iTunes. If you have never seen this prompt you probably ignored it some time in the past after purchasing music. It will not re-prompt you if you ignore it.

  • Using university's wifi network

im trying to connect to my university's wireless network but im having difficulties. To access the network you need a username and password but i cant find where to put these details into the wifi settings on the ipod touch. the wifi network runs on WPA and on the ipod touch it justs asks for the password of the wpa key. i've set this network on my laptop and i dont need the wpa key only my username and password for the university but on the touch its asks for the wpa password.
is this even possible on the ipod touch???

    Welcome to the Forums, sean86!
Scratch it twice...I believe DRoadkill is incorrect. It's true that the IPT supports VPN, but VPN connections require a key (password, RSA token, etc.), not a username and password as you need to enter. Most likely, your university is using 802.1X authentication (aka WPA2 Enterprise, which requires entry of both a username and a password, and is not the same as a VPN). 802.1X is used by many universities and corporations, as it's a very secure way to control wireless access.
Assuming that's the case, it is not possible on the IPT, yet. The v2.0 software upgrade, due out in June, will support 802.1X, as stated here.
    Hope this helps...

  • Macbook PRO can't find ANY Wifi network - only at home

Hi, i have a very strange problem with my *Macbook Pro*. I have 3 apple computers at home and one pc. On all machines Wifi works fine, except my new alu Macbook Pro. Important note is, when im with my macbook on other place, office, caffe, *Wifi works fine. But when im at home, this macbook simply can't find ANY network, it's blind.* Interesting thing is, all other computers are several years old and WiFi works fine on them. My friend also bought a brand new macbook pro, and this machine also couldn't fine any network at my home, or in other case when it found networks, it couldn't connect and recieve error message "Connection timed out". I noticed there is new Wifi network in our range, is it possible that this network can cause "blindness" on new macbooks?

*I have to say, I'm really glad you are trying to help guys.*
Well, router is almost on default settings, SSID is brodcasted and i'm not filtering MAC adresses. I tried changed channels, diffrent types of security or no security, no luck.
Guys, maybe i wrote it wrong, but this MacBook can't see ANY network. Around me there are 4-6 other networks which I'm able to see from other machines. So *problem is, this Macbook can't seen ANY network - not just mine.* BUT when i'm with this Macbook in office for example, or any other location, Wifi works....
And one more important thing, this happened suddenly. I was able few months ago to find any WiFi around me with this Macbook. No changes to router, no changes to mac. Problem is somwhere in the middle...try to focus on this: why i'm not able to see any of those cca 6 networks around me. I really think it has to do something with distorted signal and Wifi card used in new macbooks. It's really sick, because all other machines works perfectly (MB 07, MBP 06, PC, iPhone 3g)
I found a log on the router, and it's happening all the time:

I have an Epson printer on a Wifi network. Windows 7 desktop is running the network, and my wife's HP Win 7 laptop prints to it just fine. My MacBook Pro running Yosemite won't detect it, and I do have the latest driver installed. I didn't have a problem when I had a Canon Pixma on the network, but when I replaced it with the Epson nothing seems to work. I go to add a printer to the queue and only the FAX function of the printer shows up - not the WS-4530 print function. Does anyone out there have any suggestions?  Please??? :-)

    Hi Kelly,
As someone who has to print from my Mac to a networked printer at home all the time, I can certainly understand how frustrating it must be to have that fail to perform as expected. Let's see if we can get you up and running.
I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

  • Is there any way to run Siri on my iPad(iOS 6) with Local WiFi Network which requires a proxy sever and a port(8080) to connect to the internet?

I create the WiFi network using the internet sharing option in my Macbook Pro from a local ethernet connection..and set the HTTP proxy settings in my new iPad.Siri runs like a charm on an other WiFi connection which doesnt require proxy but on my University connection it says that it cant handle any requests right now..

We were having the same problem here at the School I work at.  By looking at some traffic logs and doing some internal testing, it appears Siri attempts to make a direct connection to the outside network using HTTPS (port 443), without using any of the proxy settings you may have configured on the Wifi network.
We've reported it as a bug to Apple but haven't heard anything back yet.
To get around it in the meantime you'll have to punch a hole in your firewall to allow Siri traffic through.
Currently Siri appears to contact IP address 17.174.4.14 over port 443.  The IP address may change in the future, but that will at least get you up and going for now.  We went ahead and opened the entire 17.174.4.0/24 network, as the entire block of addressess is owned by Apple.
Again, there is no gaurentee that this will not change in the future and break again.
    Good luck!

  • I just purchased an Apple TV.  I have a pc running windows 7.  It is connected to a router and the router is connected to a wireless router.  I connect my iPhone, iPad and apple tv to wireless network but do not know how to put the pc on the wifi network

I just purchased an Apple TV.  I have a pc running windows 7.  It is connected to a router and the router is connected to a wireless router.  I connect my iPhone, iPad and apple tv to wireless network but do not know how to put the pc on the wifi network so the Apple TV can do home share.

I don't mean to be facetious but sometimes the simplest things are overlooked.  To connect to your library you have to have the computer where the iTunes library is located running and with iTunes open.  It also needs to be on the same network.  My network is dual band and works with either stream but a friend of mine does not.  He has to set the computer and the Apple TV to the same band.  Hope this helps.

I have the old machine backed up onto an external firewire disk but can't hook that up to the new imac as I'm waiting for delivery of a firewire 400/800 adaptor - therefore starting the old machine up as a slave is also subject to the same delay.
I was hoping there might be some way to create a network between the 2 machines (and 2 different versions of the OS) to be able to transfer data across immediately but perhaps I'll just have to wait for my firewire adaptor to arrive.
I don't understand why you're buying a Firewire adaptor, since AFAIK both of your computers have Firewire already built in.
All you need is a firewire cable. Connect the Firewire socket on the old machine to the Firewire socket on your new iMac.
Then start the old machine in Target Mode (i.e. by holding down the T key on its keyboard, while it's starting up, until you see the three-legged T icon hopping around the screen of the old machine.)
At that point you will also see a new icon on the screen of your new iMac. This is the hard drive of your old machine.  By clicking on it you can navigate through it any way you like, just as you would normally.
Just drag across whatever you want from the old computer to the new one. This will leave everything on the old computer untouched.
    - or use Migration Assistant but in my experience, Migration Assistant isn't very reliable and fails to migrate large amounts of stuff.

  • Run a script on wifi network change

    hello,
I've been trying to figure out how to run a simple shell/python script whenever my mac's wifi network changes. After some extensive googling, I found that OS 10.5 had a utility called "kicker," but that it was removed in 10.6.
How would I go about setting up my script to run on a change in wifi network?
    Thanks--

My Mac OS X 10.5.8 system does NOT have a program called 'kicker' anywhere on the system.
How would I go about setting up my script to run on a change in wifi network?
MacroPolo is most likely the easiest solution. After that my previously suggested SleepWatcher or a launchd "WatchPaths".
