2015 Macbook or Macbook air?

16 years old, trying to pick a new notebook: Following requirements:
-Portable -Good screen and display -Price cannot exceed £1400 -Used mainly for word, powerpoint and excel but may need to do photo editing on occasion -Needs to last 3 years at least -Any other things you can think of a secondary school, soon to be college would need, mainly interested in maths and sciences as subjects.
Thanks

Honestly, I would still suggest the MacBook Air. It's way less expensive and the MacBook Air has a somewhat faster processor.

  • Why doesn't my 2015 macbook air connect to any bluetooth devices?

I have recently bought a macbook air, having been out of the apply world for a number of years.  Stupid me, but I just presumed that my up to the minute, expensive  new laptop would connect to my non-mac, not brand new, but only a couple of year's old, bluetooth devices, the main device being my wireless speakers.  Sadly, this is not the case so I am unable to listen to any  music from my iTunes library through my speakers using my 'all singing, all dancing', amazing new macbook.  I am pretty annoyed by this to say the least.  I can't even find any meaningful advice or guidance to tell me if this is a honest to goodness fact, 'no, you can't connect it' or whether it is something that I could rectify via downloading something or even taking it to someone more techy.........so frustrated!!!!!  Please help!!

Manxtree ~ Go to Apple's Knowledge Base HERE and, into the search bar, enter: Mac Bluetooth speakers and then click the Search button. In the resulting list of hits you should see one called "OS X Yosemite: Set up Bluetooth audio devices". Click on it.

  • 2015 Macbook Air connect internet via 2005 Mac mini's modem?

    2005 PPC G4 Mac mini 1.25 Ghz, 512 MB ram, 40GB HD, FW 400(DHCP)
Tiger OSX 10.4.11, internal Modem (PPP),
    Built in Ethernet.
    No Bluetooth.
    No airport card.
Basic copper wire telephone line connection.
    No ADSL line.
    No local WiFi signals.
    No mobile phone.
I live in the mountains of Asia, and have been connecting to the internet using dial-up daily for the last 9 years with my trusty 2005 PPC G4 Mac mini. Bought new from Apple, and still working perfectly using TenFourFox browser (the valiant PPC port of FireFox 31).
In 2015 I shall force myself to buy a new Mac, and the touted, paraphrased, 12" Retina Mac Air sounds perfect as my "desktop", except for the fly in the ointment; modems have been phased out.
Since my homebase is limited to modem dial-up connection, is there any way I can use my PPC Mac mini to connect the Mac Air to the internet?
I'm not concerned about "speed", just as long as I can get the same decent connection I currently enjoy on the mini.
I'm thinking along the line of using the mini's Ethernet to set up a local network, and then getting a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter cable to connect the two Macs. (Since the Air won't have an Ethernet socket.) There's also the possibility of connecting the mini's 400FW socket to the Air's 800FireWire socket too.
An unusual request; nonetheless, can it be done?
    Thank you for your help.

There may be several possible solutions to a problem like this (speaking generally about a modern Mac without a modem for dial-up).
One could perhaps be to look for a new hardware-based USB 56k modem with confirmed support for the operating system in question.
Another would be to look for an (older) wireless (Wi-Fi) router with Ethernet ports and an internal 56k modem. Depending upon the make and model, connection/security/setup may or may not be OK for a modern Mac operating system. Apple had an AirPort Extreme base station (A1034) model with a built-in modem (http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/0/MA436/en_US/AirPortExtremeBaseStationSet upGuide.pdf).
Sharing an existing connection (Internet sharing) could possibly be another alternative. Connecting a wireless Ethernet bridge (such as WNCE2001 from Netgear or WET610N from Linksys) to the Ethernet port of the old computer may add flexibility. If necessary. more information about Internet sharing can be found through the Apple support site.

  • What type of antivirus software do I need for a MacBook air 2015?

I have a new MacBook air 2015. What type of into virus software do I need? What is sophos?

What type of into virus software do I need?
Nothing your MBA doesn't already have. Avoid everything else.
There will always be threats to your information security associated with using any Internet - connected communications tool:
You can mitigate those threats by following commonsense practices
Delegating that responsibility to software is an ineffective defense
Assuming that any product will protect you from those threats is a hazardous attitude that is likely to result in neglecting point #1 above.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources.
Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
"Questionable sources" include but are not limited to spontaneously appearing web pages or popups, download hosting sites such as C net dot com, Softonic dot com, Soft pedia dot com, Download dot com, Mac Update dot com, or any other site whose revenue is primarily derived from junk product advertisements.
If you need to install software that isn't available from the Mac App Store, obtain it only from legitimate sources authorized by the software's developer.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iCloud, iTunes, or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose:Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
The same precaution applies to Adobe Flash Player. Newly discovered Flash vulnerabilities appear almost weekly.
Beware spontaneous popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > check "Block popup windows".
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but unsolicited popups are commonly used to deceive people into installing unwanted software they would never intentionally install.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever receive a popup window indicating that your Mac is infected with some ick or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
The same goes for a spontaneously appearing dialog insisting that you upgrade your video player right this instant. Such popups are frequently associated with sites that promise to deliver "free" movies or other copyrighted content that is not normally "free".
The more insistent it is that you upgrade or install something, the more likely it is to be a scam. Close the window or tab and forget it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. Most of these attempts are pathetic and are easily recognized, but that hasn't stopped prominent public figures from recently succumbing to this age-old scam.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • IRig for Macbook Air 2015

Hey I just bought a 2015 model Macbook Air and I want to use garageband with my iRig. I know that iRig is supposed to work with the older models, but I'm not sure about mine. I've plugged it in and the computer does recognize the different input and outputs, but I can't hear anything. I'm not sure if I changed a setting I shouldn't have in garageband or the regular sound, or something else. The guitar's volume is up, I know because when I plug the iRig into my iPod I can use the garagband app perfectly fine. It's just the computer that's giving me trouble. If all else fail, should I get a different interface? Any help is greatly appreciated thanks.

  • Macbook Air 13" 2015 - Install Windows 7 64bit

I understand Apple does not supply Bootcamp drivers for Windows 7 64bit to work with MacBook Air 2015 model.
Has anybody tried to install it anyway either using the Boot Camp drivers for Windows 8.1 or any other method.
Our company uses a Windows 7 Enterprise image and isn't ready for Windows 8.1.
We have been buying MacBook Air 13" as main notebook and configuring it without a Mac OS X partition. ie boots straight into Windows 7
Without Windows 7 support the business won't buy any more MacBook Air.
Want to know if possible otherwise have to go back to HP/Dell which I am sure staff won't apprieciate.

I probably should have been more clear. We don't have a Macbook Air 13" 2015 we have been using previous year models as they are supported directly with Apple's Boot Camp drivers.
Trying to find anyone who has got the current Macbook Air 13" 2015 to boot straight to Windows 7 and if they any driver issues.
    Thanks for your help

  • Problems installing Mavericks on Macbook Air 2015

I have created a bootable installer for Mavericks but I cannot get a new Macbook Air early 2015 to install.  I have tried three different brands of USB drives and also tried with SD card.  They work on a MBP I have but not on two different Macbook Air's I just purchased.  I hold down alt (Option) and turn the machine on, it sees the USB but when you click on it to boot I just get a no symbol (circle with slash) and the computer turns off.  I have tried erasing the hard drive, same result.  I have created the USB installer on the MBA and on another MBP still same result.  Any ideas?

The computer either requires Yosemite or a specialized version of Mavericks. If the new MBAs came with Yosemite installed, then you cannot install an earlier version of OS X.

  • MacBook Air 2015 no video on external monitor

Hi, I recently got a 2015 13" MacBook Air as an upgrade to my 2013 13" Air.  I use a 27" Acer monitor with a 1920x1080 resolution concurrently with the laptop's screen, and it worked perfectly with the old 2013 but since I got the 2015 model I haven't been able to use the monitor with the new laptop except for the very first time I plugged it in-there's no video.  The monitor natively uses an HDMI port to which I connect the laptop with a Mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter, I believe.  I know there was a graphics driver update in addition to the new Mac OS 10.10.3 update, both of which I've installed, but the issue remains.  Please let me know if you have any advice.  Thanks

    Sounds grim.
It would appear for whatever reason, COLOR can't see the Kona3. Driver issue? Are you using the Non-Desktop version of the latest Kona3 software?
What mouse are you using? Magic Mouse is a non-starter.

  • Is the 128GB SSD of the 2015 11'' MacBook Air slow?

I have been watching reviews about the 128GB SSD that the new 11'' MacBook Air features and they say that it's pretty slow compared to the 256GB SSD. What is your experience? Have you seen a real difference between these two hard drives?

Slow is relative... Is it slower than the new 256GB SSD? Yes. The 256GB SSD is a completely different (and much newer) device that's substantially faster. In reality, unless you're doing a lot of file intensive work, you probably won't notice a lot of difference.

  • Hi, I am having trouble MacBook Air crashing since Yosemite upgrade. I ran an Etresoft check but I don't know what it means... my system runs slowly and crashes. I have to force shutdown. Sometimes screen is black for a split second b/w webmail pages

    Hello,
I am having trouble with my MacBook Air 13 inch June 2012 MacBook Air5, 2 4GB RAM  details below in Etresoft report. I recently upgraded to Yosemite and am having system trouble. My computer crashes and I have to force quit to restart. When using webmail there is a black screen for a split second between pages. This did not happen before. I am worried that it is not running properly and perhaps I need to revert to the previous operating system. I only have a MacBook Air and no need to share images between a tablet or phone so I did not need the new photo sharing software of Yosemite. I wonder if I don't have enough RAM to run it? I did not run time machine before I made the upgrade as I did not realise the significance of an upgrade as not very Mac literate. Any advice on whether my system is in danger... most appreciated! I am writing a book and making a back up but this machine is my lifeline and my work is conducted through it. It ran perfectly before... the Yosemite upgrade has perhaps highlighted some problems and it has unnerved me!
Thanks ever so much for your advice!

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
