24 fps on FCE HD

Does Final Cut Express support a 24 fps timeline and CINEMA TOOLS? Also can you capture DV PAL?

Yes, you can capture DV PAL. If you're talking about true 24fps material, then no, FCE does not support it.

  • H.264, 1280 × 720, 59.94 fps to FCE

I want to bring a file with these characteristics into FCE for editing:
    *Video Tracks:*
    *H.264, 1280 × 720, 59.94 fps, 6.22 Mbps*
    *Audio Tracks:*
    *MPEG-4 Audio stereo, 48 kHz, 128 kbps*
I read many posts and I understand I must convert it to a format FCE can deal with. I used Streamclip to convert it to a file with these characteristics:
    *Video Tracks:*
    *Apple Intermediate Codec, 1280 × 720, 59.94 fps, 99.38 Mbps*
    *Audio Tracks:*
*16-bit Big Endian stereo, 48 kHz, 1.54 Mbps*
Now, the question becomes what preset to use in FCE to work with that file.
There is no obvious "Apple Intermediate Codec, 1280 × 720, 59.94 fps" preset in Easy Setup. So, I picked:
    *HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30*
And, for some reason, this seems to work fine. How is that right? Can this 720p30 preset actually handle 59.94 fps materials?
As a side note, if I transcode the original file to a file with these characteristics:
    *Video Tracks:*
    *Apple Intermediate Codec, 1280 × 720, 29.97 fps, 99.38 Mbps*
    *Audio Tracks:*
*16-bit Big Endian stereo, 48 kHz, 1.54 Mbps*
And import that in FCE, the video then appears to play in slow motion in FCE. (and audio sync is lost too)
It must be a stupid question, but I find this confusing a little.

The QuickTime movie inspector says the same thing Streamclip does. (see previous post)
I just did a new transcoding of the original clip using Adobe Media Encoder CS5. The characteristics of the output file are:
    *Video Tracks:*
    *Apple Intermediate Codec, 1280 × 720, 29.97 fps, 49.86 Mbps*
    *Audio Tracks:*
*16-bit Little Endian stereo, 48 kHz, 1.54 Mbps*
I imported this file in FCE and that works fine.
I am starting the believe FCE behaves differently at different times of the day.
So, I am going to transcode again using:
    1) Streamclip (whose interface is confusing, since it's hard to tell if the settings on the main window override the settings you set via the "Options..." button near the selected codec)
    2) QuickTime 7 Pro
    3) Adobe Media Encoder CS5
Those 3 tools expose codec options in slightly different ways, which certainly adds to the confusion.
As far as Apple Intermediate Codec is concerned, under QuickTime Pro, for "Compressor", I can pick HDV 720p, HDV 1080i, HDV 1080p or Other. "Other" is selected by default so I left it to that, even though "HDV 720p" looks more like the FCE "Easy Setup..." preset.

  • Import issue: Native files 1920x1080 @ 24 fps to FCE - No Codec available

Love this forum. I have learned a lot on here thanks to you tech-smart people
Searching this and other forums I can not find a clear answer to my compression import situation below:
1st, why the heck is their no codec in Final Cut Express for 24 frames per second?
Question: And since there is none, which of the HD Apple Intermediate Codec settings do I choose for FCE ‘Easy Setup’ selection?
The closest one seems to be HD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920 x 1080i60 for source material @ 29.97 fps … Will that work even though my source files are 24 fps? (I have no red render line using that choice)
Or is there a better suggestion? How important is this to my overall quality?
I am not making movies for YouTube—I am aiming at Full HD theatre quality final product for clients (Yeah shoulda got the FC-Pro . So I need to be sure I import, edit and finalize movie projects in Full-HD, as far as I understand it all.
    My Specs:
    - In US
    - Shooting MOV. clips w/audio using Canon D1 Mark IV
    - Native MOV. clips: Codec – H.264 Linear PCM / 1920x1080 @ 23.98 frames per second and 16.9 widescreen
    - MacBook Pro
    - 1 TB G-Raid external hard drive for scratch and movie files
    - To avoid having to render while editing I am converting all movie (H.264) clips using Squared-5 MPEG Streamclip app set for: Apple Intermediate Codec (with empty fps box)
    - Converted movie clips import to FCE at native 23.98 fps
I appreciate any suggestions about this, including one I already got from a friend, which was, “Buy Final Cut Pro”… My reply; “Spend all that money just to get five less frames per second!” … To Apple Corp.—add 24 fps to that FCE Codec list please!

    Thanks for that suggestion.
It makes me wonder how I find out if something like Streamclipping to 29.97 will actually work … What would be a good test of this? I mean I understand the principle and could adjust the FCE Easy Settings to match 29.97, but exactly what test could I do that would ensure I have a good or bad quality on a large screen? I am sure any major weirdness would stick right out but the less obvious aberrations may not.
… I can make a one-minute movie as a test but I only have a 23-inch workstation screen to view projects on, I wonder if that will be large enough to pinpoint resolution or codec-line problems. This project, or portions of it, may end up on both TV and theatre screens in the coming year.
You can tell I am new to FCE and the larger movie projects… I have been getting by fine with smaller projects using iMove—But I need to move up to the more serious programs and thought FCE would be a perfect stepping stone….
Furthermore, I am being extra careful on all of this because my movie project has recently become very large and will involve close to 160 gigabytes of raw movie clips… So I really need to lock-in a solid codec solution before Streamclipping that many gigs!
(Yes moving up one more step to Final Cut Pro would eliminate this problem But I am stubborn and would like to work with what I already have.
Thanks again, I appreciate your reply, I will give 29.97 a try,
    Leigh

  • SANYO FH1A, 2000A, MPEG-4 FILES, & TRANSCODING IN FCE

Is there an effective method for transcoding this camera's files that makes them native to FCE 4.0 so I don't have to render EVERY shot if it's changed in the time line? I have been shooting 1920x1080 60fps HR. Importing them as mpeg 4's, exporting them as quicktime files, then reimporting the file seems to work but I can only do one file at a time and it's time consuming. Is there any way to have the work done before, or as, I import into FCE, like you can log AVCHD files? Seems strange Apple would license their name to SANYO for the camera when the lowest resolution shooting is all that is compatible. Have I purchased the wrong camera for using on FCE? Love the video quality. Hate the pain in the 8&## editing. Apologies if this question has been asked elsewhere. I searched everywhere but could not find an answer.

Apologies. When I wrote uncompressed, I meant I had switched (using STREAMCLIP) to AIC for HD, thinking that was the same thing since the files were no longer mpeg 4. But even in AIC, the file sizes are huge. Should they be that large, or am I doing something else wrong too? And thanks. Your knowledge has already saved me hours of what would have been wasted time. Not related, but what happens to files shot in 60 fps in FCE? Does the quality drop? Is it a waste of time when the footage is transcoded? Does FINAL CUT work with 60 fps, or is the camera technology ahead of the editing software?

  • Fce 3.5 unknown file-export problem

    Hello!
I have a problem with exporting my finished movie. Everytime I try to export it as a .mov file. The following erros shows up
    Unknown File
I just have .mov files as my video files form a digital camera and .aif files as my audio files and some text. I also tried to find out which is the UNKNOWN file therefore I tried to export just the audio or just the video. It didn't work. The same error.
    Any Suggestions? I'm really confused
    Thank you
    Jens

Your camera creates QuickTime MJPEG videos at 640x480 or 320x240 pixels at either 30 or 10 fps. FCE is a DV / HCV application that uses either NTSC or PAL video standards. That is why FCE gives you the unknown file type error message.
Did you render your video in FCE before you tried to export it? If not, select all video clips in your timeline and do Sequence > Render All > Both, followed by Sequence > Render Only > Mixdown.
It would be better if you can convert your MJPEG video(s) to DV-PAL before you import them into FCE (I assume that's the correct choice for Germany; the other choice would be DV-NTSC but that is the North American standard.) I believe QuickTime Pro can do the conversion.

  • 10 FPS?

i've converted a clip using QTPro7 from h.264 to DV-PAL. I selected 25 FPS. Get Info confirms its 25 FPS but FCE sees the same clip as only 10 FPS when I imported it. Consequently the footage plays slowly, yet the audio is at normal speed.
The same issue happens on 2 different machines, suggesting the original file is at fault but I wondered if anyone else has encountered the same problem or have suggestions for a fix?
    thanks
    andy

if anyone else has encountered the same problem or have suggestions for a fix?
I don't think your conversion was successful. AVCHD Lite is one culprit for slow running clips because it's not directly compatible with FCE.
_Which camera produced the clips in question?_
Try converting the clips in Streamclip to QuickTime with matching properties then bring those converted clips to FCE.
Make sure the Easy Setup you select matches the converted clips so there are no mis-matches in audio or video.

  • Final Cut Express Vs. Final Cut Pro Vs. Adobe Premiere

    Hey all,
I just bought my first Apple computer and I'm loving it. I have worked with Final Cut Pro in the past and I really enjoy working with it. However, $1000 is a bit steep. I would like to ask what your opinions are on maybe getting Final Cut Express or Adobe Premiere Pro.
I have the trial of Adobe Premiere right now, but whenever I place a clip into the timeline, it needs to be rendered. This was never an issue with Final Cut on the computers at my school. I was wondering if you knew if Final Cut Express would have better rendering times and wouldnt need as much rendering. Also, it may be the graphics card in my computer. If you think this is the problem, can you provide me with a solid video/graphics card that I should look into?
    Thanks all,
    Kevin

I own all three programs actually - here's my advice.
Stay the heck away from Adobe Premiere. It is no where nearly as Mac friendly and for the price, just isn't worth it. I purchased it for the Blu-ray authoring capabilities of Encore, so that's all I use it for. The plus to Premiere is that it can edit some native formats that Final Cut Pro cannot. For example, native AVCHD as well as MPEG-2 in program streams. That being said, Encore is the best option for Blu-ray authoring at a reasonable cost that gives you the ability to modify menus, etc.
Final Cut Express is a great application - my only reason for having final cut pro was my need to edit footage at 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 fps. FCE only handles 29.97 (and 25 fps). Final Cut Pro also gives you the ability to edit more footage natively. FCE only supports DV, HDV, and AVCHD, with the latter two being transcoded into Apple Intermediate Codec for editing. FCP supports a myriad of formats and allows native editing in HDV - although it still transcodes AVCHD. FCP also gives you access to the ProRes set of codecs which are significant improvements on Apple Intermediate Codec that offer high quality in transcoding and editing.
So the real question is, what are you going to be doing?

  • Big trouble(got stucked) trying to convert swf to mov

    Hello, folks
I'm trying to convert some swf files to Mov, or mpeg, or any video type file, so I can import it to FCE and use it.
Since FCExpress do not work with swf files, I've downlodead a LOT, A LOT, of softwares and NO ONE of it worked in this conversion.
I'm very helpless, please someone gimme a light! Thanks

    Hi(Bonjour)!
For what is worth, you can use a screen capture utility like Ambrosia SnapzPro X to "record" a live window playing your swf. The latest SnapzPro update has fixed issue with FPS in FCE.

  • HELP! -- Slideshow ****

I have tried many programs to create a QuickTime movie of my narrated slideshow, to no avail...
I have a bunch of 1024 x 768 slides, which I want to stay at that resolution in a final QT movie which is 1024x768 sized.
I have a narration soundtrack, and I want the pictures to simply appear at certain times to sync with the soundtrack. Simple cuts, no fades, no spins, nothing complicated....
The pictures do NOT appear at regular intervals; each is synced to a particular time in the narration audio.
Just: Picture, blah blah blah, next picture, short blah, next picture, long blah blah blah, next picture, etc etc until done.
Doesn't seem too hard, does it?
In Final Cut Express, you don't get 1024x768, OR single pictures for certain durations (only the same picture over and over at 30 fps or whatever).
iPhoto only gives you constant intervals between slides.
I tried Adobe Director, but it crashes after export without finishing the QT movie.
I tried Fotomagico, which has lots of problems: resolution, QT compressor selection, single pictures output over and over at 30 fps like FCE.
And several other apps. None work.
SO =============== Final Desperate gamble follows...
Is there a way for me to open a picture in QT Player and save it WITH A GIVEN DURATION?
If so, I can make itty-bitty silent movies of my slides, use QT Player to string them together, then add in my soundtrack. Sigh.
    Any ideas?

    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/RedneckTexasXmas/
Made using QT Pro and an OS X compatible (free software) to create "transitions" between still image files.
All added to audio tracks and even another image (the map) and still under 4MB's in file size.
Since QuickTime .mov files can have up to 99 "tracks" and each can have masks, quickly be resized or positioned (offset) and have levels of transparency you can tell a complete story in a simple Web page.
Alas, the "Pepto-Bismol" pink was supposed to be transparent and it kinda ruins the effect.
QuickTime Pro is a very powerful authoring tool!

  • How to convert video shot in 60fps into 24fps in final cut express?

I was wondering if you can convert video that was in 60 fps into 24 fps within FCE to get the slow-mo fluid motion?
Any assitance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

ok so what you are saying is it does support 60 fps then? I know the post says nothing about 720, it states that FCE doesn't support 60p so whether it is 720, 480 or whatever home made concoction, it doesn't support it. The reason I stated 720p60 is because there is no broad supported standard in 1080p60 and I didn't want to be attacked for using an unsupported HD standard as an "example". Clearly you don't know the answer and are just avoiding it like any politician.

  • 30 fps to 25fps? And which HD video ready camera is most FCE friendly?

Okay, I'm close to buying either the Nikon p100 or Canon sx20..I've posted on every conceivable forum and no decent reply, so last fitch attempt here. Firstly, I've been corrected that neither is a DSLR...so just for my info...what are they?
Which is friendlier towards editing in FCE? Either of them mov output? And it seems that all are 30fps...so when i import and edit and upload to websites on 30 fps, no probs, what'll happen if i try to convert to 25 fps? (Some film contests only accept 25fps, that's why I'm asking)And can this conversion be done in FCE or will I need a third part software?
AND ABOVE ALL...ANY RECOMMENDATIONS B/W THE TWO? I care less about the stills, more abt video and I DON'T zoom while in shot much so that drawback in image I've got as feedback is irrelevant to my plans.
    Thanks all!

Neither of them will work with Final Cut, Express or Pro, without third party support.

  • Unable to properly capture HD video from miniDV tape in FCE

unable to capture HD video from miniDV tape
When I connect my Sony HDR-HC3 miniDV HDV camcorder to my iMac via firewire cable and use Final Cut Express to capture the video from the tape, I do not get a Capture window that allows me to specify in and out points, I just get a playback window that immediately starts capturing and the only option I have in this window is hit ESC to stop capturing. If I let this capture window continue to capture the video from the camera with miniDV HD tape, then the entire tape would be captured as one massive single video clip.
QUESTION: Is there something I change or do to make the proper capture window appear where I can specify in and out points to capture from tape for each clip?
NOTE: using same camera and tape with iMovie with automatic capture enabled, all the clips get captured properly. I also tried to use the manual setting in iMovie and it worked too.
More details(read only if you want more information)
I have a several miniDV tapes containing HD video created on a Sony Sony HDR-HC5 and Sony HDR-HC7. Unfortunately, both these camera were stolen, and I have since moved to a camera that uses flash memory, not tape. However, I need to get the video footage off these tapes, so I bought a used Sony HDR-HC3, it plays the HD miniDV tapes just fine and iMovie reads the video from this camera just fine, but Final Cut Express does not.
When I setup Final Cut Express, I used the Easy Setup and specified:
    Format: HD
    Rate: 29.97 fps
    Use: HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60
These setting match those of the camera and recorded tape. If I use any other settings but these, then Final Cut Express never sees the camera and never opens any capture window at all. Using Quicktime 10 movie inspector on the clips captured by iMovie from same camera, all the clips match this setting too.
    Final Cut Express version 4.0.1
    iMovie 09 Version 8.0.2 (821)
iMac 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 running
    Mac OS X Version 10.6.4
My Final Cut Express scratch disk is a Seagate 2TB external USB 2.0 Hard Drive that has been formatted to be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This external disk is also where iMovie successfully captured all the video from the same camera.

Thanks for the answer. It makes me sad. I thought using Final Cut Express would be an upgrade to a more robust editing system from iMovie, yet iMovie does a superior job of logging and capturing video from HDV video on miniDV tape in comparison to FCE. Not only does iMovie capture each clip on the tape into it's own video file automatically, it also includes timestamp information in the filename indicating when the clip was originally recorded, which appears to be something that is missing from Final Cut Express. Now I realize that HDV miniDV cameras had a relatively short life span in the consumer marketplace and have since all been replaced by flash and hard drive based AVCHD cameras, but from circa 2004 to 2007, miniDV HDV camcorders were very popular and I am sure there are lots of consumers that must be super frustrated by Final Cut Express limited ability to log and capture clips properly from these cameras.
Assuming I do not want to make a rough cut of video in iMovie and prefer to begin my editing project in Final Cut Express (not doing XML export of iMovie project), I need to determine the best way to get clips captured via iMovie into Final Cut Express and determine if there is anything inferior in the iMovie captured clips that I need to be aware of. So far it appears that both iMovie and Final Cut Express reduce the 5.1 surround sound captured on the HDV miniDV tapes to stereo sound, which is not a big lose given the 5.1 sound was recorded from camera's built-in microphone, but it makes me wonder if the video is reduced in any way by the iMovie import process, examining the video in quicktime's inspector window the video appears to be the same in both iMovie and FCE, but I'll research the answers to these questions elsewhere on this forum and post additional questions if I do not find the information I need.

  • Work around for capturing 24p in FCE

I am working on a clients system its a new Mac Power Book Pro running FCE 4.
Shot some HD footage at 24p. I have discovered that FCE does not natively capture 24p. Anyone suggest a good work around? trying to capture at 29.97 the footage stuters pixilates and creates copius amounts of un usable files.

Try using MPEG Streamclip or JES Deinterlacer to convert your frame rate and progressive to interlaced.
Just be aware that changing the frame rate is not a great thing to do, as you are likely to lose some visual quality, especially since you are in an NTSC country and will have to go to 29.97 or 60i. (If you were in a PAL country you might get away pretty good converting to 25 fps, which means only 1 additional blended frame in each 24. NTSC won't be as clean.)
You also need to find out exactly how the original video was shot. There are quite a few camcorders that shoot 24p over 30i or 60i, so you may actually have 60i material. It would help a lot to know exactly what make/model camera was used for the source footage.

  • Image quality in FCE: Not as sharp as it should be...

Hi, I'm getting in the queue with those who are having troubles with the output of FCE.
I'm doing a simple DVD editing, by cutting the beginning and the ending titles and keeping the mid content.
I extracted the VOB files from the DVD and converted them in QT format with the result being as nice and sharp as it is on the DVD.
The final output is 768x576, H. 264, Integer (Big Endian), 25 fps, total BR 6,480.
I put it in a FCE new project, where it has the same properties, but the sequence that contains it, for some reasons are 1280x720, Apple Int. Codec, 29,97 fps.
I added a new beginning and ending titles in separate sequences in FCE, with a png image and some generated text, but the quality and the sharpness of the final export are not even close to the original.
I know the original editor for the DVD personally and I know he works on Windows based machines, so no FC there.
    In this picture:
    http://www.jcmonteromultimedia.com/jcmm/download/FCEcomparison.png
on the left is the original footage, very clear and sharp, on the right my own graphics done in FCE, with the .png logo and the added text, very low quality.
Any help on this issue will be much appreciated!
    Thanks.
    JC

768x576 is what? That's square pixel PAL. What is that? It's completely non-standard. And why H.264? That's a delivery codec not a production codec.
FCE only works with DV and HDV using the Apple Intermediate Codec. If you're converting PAL material from DVD you convert it to QuickTime using the DV PAL codec at the standard frame size 720x576. Any material created in a video editing application is in a format designed for display on a television set. You must assess the rendered output on a video monitor. You cannot assess it on a computer monitor. It is not designed for display on a computer monitor. If you are looking at it in on a computer monitor in the QuickTime player you must make sure it is set to high quality playback.

  • Is FCE or FCP the one for me?

    Hi,
I'm new to the video editing world, and my main reason for getting into it at all is to prepare DVD demo reels of my film score work. All of my source material is QT movies.
I recently assembled just such a reel using iMovie. Got quite the education in basic techniques of assembling footage, adding titles, transitions, etc. But I also quickly realized that I'm going to need a more "pro" program to do this kind of work more quickly and efficiently (also, once in iMovie, the picture quality went into the toilet for some reason). So I'm considering some version or other of FC.
I'm a music composer first and foremost, and aside from the need to generate promotional materials like my demo reel, I can't make it my life's work to learn a whole new skill. But I do know I need a better tool to dot he job. So I'm looking for advice on what the best program would be for me: FCE or FCP.
I'm going to assume (hopefully correctly) that anything I can do in iMovie can be done in some version of FC. So here's a list of what I'd be looking to achieve from FC. Which is best for me, and, are these things possible?
    1. when clips are imported that the picture quality remains identical to the source
    2. ability to mix QT clips at different frame rates (24 fps and 29.97)
    3. have multiple tracks of video and audio
    4. ability to add video clips and lock them to the timeline so that their placement is more or less permanent (unless I decide later to "unlock" them) and, that their position won't be moved or "rippled" when I edit other clips
    5. ability to maintain permanent lock between video and audio extracted from the video file (iMovie isn't predictable in this aspect)
    6. ability to edit audio with a high degree of precision (see proper waveform displays, maybe even a tempo grid?)
Thanks to anyone who can share their thoughts.
    -=iS=-

    Hi Ian,
That link was very helpful. Just one more question... from my original post, "when clips are imported [into the program] that the picture quality remains identical to the source", what feature of FC would indicate that characteristic?
(To be more specific, all of my various footage is the output of various well-known animation houses, and is all top notch in appearance even in QT format. But when those QT's are imported into iMovie the appearance becomes grainy, backgrounds become splotchy and pixelated, and edges become aliased...)
    Cheers!
