2560 x 1440 in VMware Workstation 11 with X1 Carbon 3rd gen?

I've installed Windows 10 Preview in a virtual machine with VMware Workstation 11 on my X1 Carbon 3rd gen. (20BS). By default, the display in the VM is recognized as Generic Non-PnP Monitor and the highest compatible resolution I can select for it is 1920x1440, which means I have black vertical bars on both sides. Other, higher listed resolutions are: 2048x1536, 2560x1600 and 2560x1920, but what I want is 2560x1440.
As suggested in this VMware KB article, I have added the following lines to the .vmx file:
svga.autodetect = "FALSE"
svga.vramSize = 14745600
svga.maxWidth = 2560
svga.maxHeight = 1440
14745600 is 2560x1440x4.
However, this doesn't work. When I start the VM, I get a dialog box telling me: "The virtual machine could not be changed to the selected monitor layout."
Is anyone able to run a Windows VM at 2560x1440 on an X1 Carbon with VMWare Workstation 11?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I found the solution here: disable 3D acceleration.
This is done by changing the following line in the .vmx:
mks.enable3d = "TRUE"
to:
mks.enable3d = "FALSE"
I'm now able to run Windows 10 Preview at the full 2560x1440 resolution supported by my X1 Carbon, great!

  • Run FOUR 2560 x 1440 displays from W530?

    Hi all,
I have a setup most folks don't see every day, but it serves me well.  I find myself in need of updating it, though.
    CURRENT setup:
W530 laptop with 32GB and the NVidia Quadro K2000M card
    Sitting in a 4338 dock
Four (4) HP 24" LCD displays, each running at 1920x1200
Displays 1 & 2 are connected directly to the dock using the two DVI ports on it
    Displays 3 & 4 are connected to a Targus USB 3.0 adapter.
    What I want:
Four of these (or something similar) displays at the full 2560 x 1440 resolution
So...  I guess the first question is...  Can this be done with this laptop and this dock?  If so, the second question is...  What do I need?  I have scoured these forums and Google and found a great deal of info that is close, but nothing I can find has made me think anyone else is running 4 displays at this resolution.  I know my current Targus adapter won't support that resolution.  Help!
If the W530 won't do this, would a W540?  And would a W540 work with this dock?
I would greatly appreciate any help.
    Chris
PS.  I don't game.  This is purely for the office.  I just need a lotta screen real estate.  I will watch a video every now and then, but this is 99.9% for typical office use.

    Hi again, everyone!  Well...
It worked!  Two Samsungs connected directly to the dock, each via DP; then one each connected to a StarTech USB32DPPRO.  10,240 pixels of super high-definition glory.

  • Why is Best for Display setting in new iMac with Retina 5K Display only 2560 x 1440?

I just saw the new iMac with 5K Retina Display. It's awesome! I do have one question, though: The default (Best for Display) resolution is 2560 x 1440. That is the same as my current LED Cinema Display. Adjusting the scale in the System Preferences/Display settings maxes out at 3200 x1800, not 5120 x 2880. I'm not sure why the highest scale option isn't the full resolution of the display. Can anyone explain this or direct me to an article that does?

That got my curiosity too. It's something about the retinas pixel density per inch being higher than other displays, such as a Cinema HD.
The "Best (Retina)" option says "Looks like 2560 x 1440" when you roll over it, but the real pixel density is actually doubled I think, so 5120 x 2880.
The "Looks like..." phrase seems to refer to the size of elements on the screen rather than actual pixels. Perhaps that's what some folks call virtual pixels.

  • Mirroring 2560 x 1440 resolution ?

I have bought an Iiyama Prolite XB2779QS 27" monitor to mirror the display of my 27" iMac (mid 2011 model) onto. The Prolite XB2779QS is a 2560 x 1440 monitor, yet I can only get it to mirror the iMac's display in 1080P resolution max. Am I doing something wrong? I am using a HDMI to mini-display cable, but the Prolite XB2779QS also has a thunderbolt port.
Would using a thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable help? I know that the highest resolution that mirroring supports depends on the external monitor, but the insides of the Prolite XB2779QS supposedly are the same as a 27" cinema display!
    Hope somebody can help me.

Figured out that DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable (with the Mini DisplayPort cable going into the iMac's Thunderbolt Port) will sort me out:

  • 27-inch (2560 x 1440) very hard to read

I just bought an iMac 27-inch (a replacement from the previous iMac 24 inch)
I found out that at full resolution 2560 x 1440, the display is really hard to read as all the icons are minuscule.
While you can adjust the size of the folders on the desktop, when you're inside a software (say InDesign) the palettes are ridiculously minuscule.
I had to actualy switch the display back to 1920 x 1200 resolution to have a interface that looks good and doesn't strain the eyes
But now I have two black bars on each side of the screen
Is there another way to have a eye-friendly resolution while enjoying the full screen experience?
or am I doomed to use the computer at a lower resolution?

The 27" display high pixel density does make stuff appear small sometimes.  But you can always zoom in to the point of interest just by using the control button in conjunction with the magic mouse finger slide up/down (or a mouse with a scroll wheel).  You can also change view options for finder items to enlarge icons and the identifying font size.
In apps that display fonts you can usually change the default font sizes (text editors, browsers for example).
It just takes a little bit of getting used to but after a while you won't think about it.  I use the zoom feature a lot.

  • 2560 x 1440 option in the display settings

Will the new Intel HD Graphics 4000 on the mini support my Asus PB278Q at a res of 2560 x 1440 out of the thunderbolt port using a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Adapter Cable supplied with the monitor? Will it give me the 2560 x 1440 option in the display settings?

Yes it and it's predecessors from 2009 on, all supported up to 2560 x 1600 out of there Mini DVI, MiniDisplay Port and Thunderbolt Ports.
    Video Support
Works with almost any display or HDTV.
Thunderbolt port with support for up to 2560-by-1600 resolution
HDMI port with support for up to 1920-by-1200 resolution
DVI output using HDMI to DVI Adapter (included)
Support for dual display and video mirroring

  • Browsing at 2560 x 1440 resolution.

Is there any way to set Firefox to fill my screen without zooming every time I change pages? I have a 27" iMac, and at full resolution is 2560 x 1440. I know I can change the resolution of the display, but that cuts into the functionality of other applications.
As it is, I have to zoom in multiple times to avoid eyestrain. Thanks.

If the zoom feature usually gets you to where you want, you can set that zoom level as the default for all sites. There are a couple of add-ons designed to save your zoom settings. I haven't tried them, but here they are:
    *[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2592/ NoSquint]
    *[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6965/ Default FullZoom Level]
If there are particular sites that still present a problem, feel free to post their URLs.

  • How to change size of all text on screen when in 2560 x 1440?

    Hello,
When I change my display setting to 2560 x 1440 all of the text on the screen turn to 'mice-type'.  Is there a way to increase the font size to like 14?  I like the higher resolution, but can't take the small fonts.
    Thanks,
    Hank

If you want the fonts in all the windows and the menu bar, etc. to be larger, you do need to take down the resolution a notch; if you don't want to do that, you can increase the font size in finder (View > show view options), but that will only increase the size in some of them.

Trying to upgrade my monitor. It is hooked with HP Pavillion DM4 laptop. Can Pavillion dm4 with Intel HD Graphics support monitor with 2560 X 1440 resolution? Thanks.

Need full model number and Intel HD version (4000, 4600?) and which port you are using. Generally HDMI output is capped at full HD; 1920 x 1080.

  • Beyond 2560 x 1440 with External Monitors - is W540 the only Option?

    Hello Everyone,
I went through great efforts to upgrade my x201 to a T430s (NVIDIA) in order to drive 3 external monitors from a dock which I finally got to work.
I do this because I like to travel between home and the office, but have equally elaborate set ups with external video and external audio, yet while being able to travel with the same laptop.
I am now experimenting with 2, not 3 monitors, using the new LG 34" curved monitors, which are a bit bigger and display at 3440 x 1440.
The good news is using my T430s I am able to get both monitors to display at 3440 x 1440 and they look great!
The bad news is that if I open up just one too many windows, or drag something across the extended desktop, they are crashing.
When they crash, I lose the signal (DisplayPort) and get error messages from the monitors.
    I have already spoken to
    1) Lenovo sales
    2) Lenovo tech support
    3) Lenovo tech support in Atlanta
and no one seems to have any idea what I am talking about.
I am guessing I may need to upgrade from my T430s, which I would rather not do.
I am also guessing that the W540 would have enough graphics / video horsepower to drive at least 2 of these higher resolution monitors?
In an ideal world, I would not have the extra weight or features of the W540, but first and foremost, I want multiple and dazzling high resolution displays from a dock.
Given that I am going from 3 screens down to 2, also wondering if say, an X1 Carbon might drive 2 using a dock?
Or it is only able to drive 2 screens at 1920 x 1080 or 2560 x 1440 best case.
    In summary, any advice please:
    1) W540 using LG "ultrawide" screens as described above
    2) Any other Lenovo laptop not as big or heavy as the W540 which would still have high end, high powered graphics capabilities when docked?
    Thank you and best regards,

Thank you for replies so far.
Re Lenovo tech "support" I am a die hard Lenovo fan (4 laptops so far...) but find Lenovo's website confusing and their tech support terrible.
For my T430s, I paid for at least an hour of support to no avail, before discovering that it was a simple Windows update that was the key to driving 3 external monitors, with better information generally coming from this forum.  Supposedly, even the T430s with the NVIDIA upgrade can handle 3 external monitors at 2560 x 1440.
Now, however, I would like to use bigger and higher resolution screens, even if it means going from 3 external monitors to only 2.
I have used the T430s and dock, driving 2 of the new Samsung 28" 4K monitors up to 2560 x 1440 without any issues.  But moving up to the LG 34 ultrawide screens with 3440 x 1440, I can only run one.  With 2 it becomes unstable.
I hope more Lenovo fans tune into the resolution and display quality  - it would only enhance the brand.
Even for business only users, with data and text, everything is cleaner, crisper and less fatiguing at the higher resolutions.
ColonelONeill thanks for suggestion but hoping to find an integrated, on board, plug and play, drop into the dock and be done with it solution.
So again, hoping that worst case, the W540 with the highest spec video card could drive 2 of the LG ultrawide monitors without struggling?
Or one of the other newer machines?

  • How to setup Macbook Pro 13" to get 2560 x 1440 resolution on a Dell U2711?

    Any help greatly appreciated.
I am trying with mini-display port to DVI cable now, and can't quite get to 2560x1440... Either on native MAC OS environment or on the Bootcamp Win-7 professional (64bit) environment.
Do I need to buy another cable? Or is it a software/set up issue.
My Macbook Pro is a mid 2009 model which came with just the mini-display port external display adapter. I believe it has the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM.
Many thanks in advance for your input.

Older MBP models had built-in dual-link DVI ports; the unibody MBPs don't. I imagine that was a cost- and/or space-saving design decision, but of course I have no inside information about Apple's thinking.
It isn't the physical dimensions of a display but its pixel dimensions that determine whether it needs dual-link DVI. Any display whose native resolution exceeds 1920 x 1200 requires dual-link, regardless of its physical size. A 1920 x 1080 display does not require dual-link, no matter how big it is physically. You can easily drive a 60" or 65" 1080p HDTV without a dual-link adapter.

  • Need 2560 x 1440 resolution

I just converted to a new Mac Pro from a 2008 Mac Pro.  I connected my Dell U2711 using Display Port to mini DP and can't get 2560x1440.  Worked fine on old machine.  What to do?

Is this the new black cylinder Mac Pro?
Did you try holding the Option key in System preferences > Displays for more options?
If not the newest mac Pro, what Display Card on what Mac Pro 42lb silver tower, and what version of Mac OS X?

  • 2008 Unibody Macbook with 2560 x 1440 external display ?

    Hello to all,
This is my first post here but I have used many times the forum to find out usefull information. I am considering buying an external display for my Macbook, but I am hesitating for two reasons:
I read on some page that there could be performance issues with using a high resolution on this rather "old" machine:
    http://superuser.com/questions/265125/27-apple-cinema-display-slows-my-macbook
I have upgraded my MB to 8 GB memory (and a 750 GB HDD but I doubt that makes a difference).
My MB model is this one:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/specs/macbook-core-2-duo-2.0-alumi num-13-late-2008-unibody-specs.html
I mostly use it for Web browsing / Office software / iPhoto / movie watching
So first question is: Can anybody confirm whether it will be OK to run my MB with a display of this resolution (similar to Apple Cinema Display), either with the laptop closed or opened?
Second "bonus" question: According to what I read here and there, it seems that I would need to use a miniDisplayPort to DisplayPort cable or a mDP to DVI-dual-link to ensure full resolution. I own a miniDP to HDMI cable (and HDMI to DVI converter), any chance that I can use it with full resolution ? I didn't find much user feedback on this point yet.
Many thanks for your answers !
    Matthieu

Well, I went ahead and bought the display I wanted, so, yes, I can display 2560x1440, with this MB. It is a bit slow on some applicaitons but it may be due to the dual display, I bet if I use it in clamshell mode it should be OK for most applications.

  • Using a VMware Fusion XP environment with multiple Mac users

    Hi,
I have installed an XP environment using VMware Fusion. I am only able to start this XP environment when logged in as the user that created it. How can I grant access to this environment to other MAC users on my machine?
    Any input is much appreciated.
    Kind regards, Hans.

Thanks all, thanks for your input. I have been able to solve it now.
As suggested I moved the VMWARE file to the shared folder. Then I assigned read/write access rights to the specific users. This is something I had not tried before. Somehow just moving to the shared folder did not change access rights on file level.
    Thanks all,
    Hans.
